Abstract:
In this paper I investigate a number of public intellectual debates in current Thai Theravada Buddhism that are related to several fundamental questions regarding the meaning and function of the Pali canon. The focal point of this investigation will be debates in which the Thai scholar monk Phra Payutto (b. 1939) has been playing a significant role. In these debates, the Pali canon is regarded as a central text endowed with special normative and formative authority. I will look at contestations that concern Theravada-ness and, at the same time, and inextricably linked with this, at concepts of demarcation to systems of religious beliefs and practices that are believed to be ‘outside’ Theravada. This, of course, engages the question of inclusivism, exclusivism and pluralism within Theravada. In so doing, I explore and posit concepts on the meanings and functions of the Pali canon that position it either as the or an authoritative reference.

Abstract:
Following is a review оf the monograph published in 2019 by Yevgeniy G. Vyrshchikov ‘City — Village — Forest: The World of the Creators of the Pali Canon and Their Contemporaries’, which was published in 2019 by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow (editors: V. V. Vertogradova and V. P. Androsov). This work is a cultural study of the so called Pali Canon, or Tipitaka — the early Buddhist Canon of the Theravada school. It is mainly devoted to ideas about space and related views on the structure of the world and society. To understand the cultural context of the existence of early Buddhist ideas about the world, other sources are also involved — Buddhist, Brahmanic and Hindu texts: Ceylon’s mahavamsa, Arthashastra, Ramayana, Chitrasutra, other Sanskrit texts and Ashoka’s epigraphic inscriptions. In addition, ancient sources are used, such as Strabo’s “Geography”, as well as medieval English ballads about Robin Hood. According to the author, the world of the Pali Canon is divided into three main units of space: The most sacred and pure is the forest — the place where shramans and other ascetics live. Its opposite is the city, which embodies all that is worldly, contrary to asceticism and opposed to it. They are separated by an intermediate area — the countryside (janapada). The monograph explores all three components of this world, analyzes the necessary terminology and conceptual apparatus. The review provides an overview of the main provisions of the monograph and makes some critical comments on its text.

Abstract:
AbstractWhile the Theragāthā contains only ten verses attributed to the Elder Kāludāyi, the Pali commentaries ascribe a further two sets of verses to him. The present article aims to carry out a detailed survey of these verses, which have so far received no scholarly attention, as a contribution to the understanding of the formation of Kāludāyi's verses in the canon and their paracanonical legacy. In this paper, the additional verses of Kāludāyi that appear in the commentaries are critically analysed in light of all other utterances attributed to him, in the canon as well as in the commentaries. The style, syntax, and wordings of specific stanzas of both series will be taken into consideration so as to evaluate their antiquity and their literary quality. When dealing with the rhetorical devices adapted in the stanzas, some Sanskrit poems are also taken into account.

Abstract:
This article concerns the origin of the early Buddhist term tathagata (on Pali and Sanskrit material). This way, if you judge according to the Pali Canon, is of ancient pre-Buddhist origin. The “Digha-Nikaya” Sutras provides us with a number of nontrivial contexts of the use of this word, allowing us to accurately establish its etymology and literal meaning. In addition, these contexts suggest a special connection of Tathagata (as an image of the Buddha) with “truth telling”.

Dhammaratana, Tampalewela. "Quelques aspects de la doctrine d'anatta ( non-soi ) dans le canon pali." Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040066.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work we bring out some aspects of the anatta doctrine (non-self) depicted in the pali canon. In this regard we have consulted a large portion of the pali tipitaka (sutta, vinaya, abhidhamma) as well as the commentaries (atthakatha) and its subcommentaries (tika). The term "atta" corresponds in the vedic philosophy to braham or atman eternal. Therefore the prefix negatif "an+atta" is a recognition under buddhist philosophy of anatta or doctrine of non-self. In the first part of the thesis we study the historical, philosophical and religious back ground of ancient india, and in the second part we examine the fundamental teachings of buddhism relating to the no-soul doctrine. Then, the third part "analytical study of an individual" proves that no permanent soul exists amongst this empirical individuals. In the fourth part, we make a comparative study of philosophies on the eternal soul in ancient india, and we conclude this thesis by giving our explanations on the silence of the buddha on the avyakata

Barlow, Cynthia Christine 1970. "A detailed program for Samuel Jones' Symphony No. 3 (Palo Duro Canyon)." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278517.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the program of Symphony No. 3 (The Palo Duro Canyon) by Dr. Samuel Jones. A single-movement work in four large sections, The Palo Duro Canyon Symphony is a programmatic symphony in sonata form. The program involves the literal visual images of the Palo Duro Canyon, located in the Texas panhandle, as well as a descriptive story of the history of man and his struggles with nature. Also depicted is the struggle between two cultures that have occupied the canyon: natives and settlers. The analysis within this paper shows the use of motives, harmonic relationships, and formal structure within this program. Jones' deft use of all of these musical elements in establishing the program makes The Palo Duro Canyon Symphony a strong example of late twentieth-century tonal symphonic music.

Booth, Amy. "Linking Children and Nature through Design: Integrating nature education for children of the Texas Panhandle into Palo Duro Canyon." The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/294794.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been suggested that the natural world establishes one of the most significant contexts children encounter during their most critical years of development. When children are allowed to interact with nature, they are able to make essential connections between humans, animals, natural systems, and gain a better understanding of the world at large. Unfortunately, within the span of a few decades, more and more children are losing touch with the natural world; the way they comprehend and interact with the outdoors is radically changing. To battle the current indoor trends, outdoor learning environments are springing up all over the country. This project serves to further examine outdoor educational facilities and to tailor a modified outdoor nature center prototype into the base of Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle. A final master plan will examine ways to implement various educational strategies for children while respecting the existing canyon ecosystem and ingraining a sense of stewardship into the nature center’s young visitors.

Abstract:
The attitudes toward the integration of faith and discipline of full-time faculty members at five selected Southern Baptist colleges and universities which are members of the Christian College Coalition were explored for this study. The integration of faith and discipline is a concept unique to Southern Baptist higher education. Arthur Walker, Jr., of the Education Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention defines the concept as referring to the mission of the institution, the personal faith of faculty members, and the professional involvement and interaction of faculty members with their students, regardless of disciplines. Since little information exists on faculty attitudes toward this concept, data were collected through a survey instrument on three dimensions of integration: professorial integration in the classroom, professorial integration in and out of the classroom, and institutional integration of faith and discipline.

Abstract:
While it is often said that Buddhism is an "urban religion" or a "product of an urban revolution", the actual relationship between Buddhists and the urban space of ancient India remains somewhat vague. This is in part due to a lack of evidence. In order to understand the connection of early Buddhism to the urban environment in which it seems to have arisen we need to carefully examine what source are available, including archaeological evidence and textual sources like the Pali Canon. By looking at the narratives concerning the cities of Pâtaliputra, Râjagrha and Kusâvati in the Buddhist texts of the Pali Canon, I will provide a clearer view of how the Buddhist religious community imagined its relationship to urban space. Three elements will provide the focus of this endeavour: firstly, the narratives of the physical urban space in the texts; secondly, the comparison of that description with available archaeological evidence relating to that physical space; and thirdly, the analysis of what the textual evidence indicates about the authors perceived relationship with that physical space.

Abstract:
The peer learning project RApP (Ragazze e Ragazzi apprendono tra Pari) took place at the ISIS Gobetti-Volta high school in Bagno a Ripoli, Florence. With the aim to develop debate and public speaking activities, the project applies the IDEAM method, known as the five canons of ancient rhetoric (Inventio, Dispositio, Elocutio, Actio and Memoria). Thanks to this framework, it is possible to visualize and apply changes to the organization and writing of an effective speech, as well as to its memorization and delivery in public. A platform of applied training combined with a set of propaedeutic exercises based on the approach of ancient progymnasmata outlines a gradual pathway aimed at strengthening the uses of language as an individual skill, with a view to acquiring the skills to use language in the social environment of debate.
