Full textUnderstanding the lubricated contact behaviour is of great importance in mechanical design. Lubricant starvation reduces the film thickness and can lead to the mechanism failure. It alters the traction coefficient and increases the power losses. Traction coefficient measurements show that it strongly depends on the lubricating conditions. Under starved lubrication, traction is time dependent. Many cycles are needed to balance the lubricant ejection and replenishment. Increasing the rolling speed or the lubricant viscosity increases the starvation severity. Traction coefficient measurements in starved contacts can be used to determine the lubricant film thickness. This new way of measuring film thicknesses can be applied to general mechanisms. The rolling contact fatigue of starved lubricated contacts is theoretically and experimentally studied. The lubricant amount has a great influence on fatigue life. The measured fatigue life reduction is more than 50%. Finally, this work shows that thermal dissipation is very important in starved contacts. The range of operating conditions for which starvation is observed is very narrow. Increasing the starvation severity, the contact conditions rapidly deteriorate from fully-flooded to scuffing

Full textThe self-lubricating property of porous journal bearings is due to oil, contained in the bearings' pores which feeds the lubricating film supporting the shaft. The ail is sucked in the area of maximum gap where the lubricating film is broken by cavitation. In the first state of this study, it became apparent that the mathematical models from the literature, which· are not conservative, could not allow the simulation of flows in porous journal bearings. The importance of the lubricant's capacity to withstand cavitation was demonstrated. The Floberg-Elrod free boundary model was adapted for porous journal bearings (2D and 3D) to study cavitation problem. The flows into the porous bearing and into the film were simulated by the Darcy law and the Renolds equation respectively. The capillarity phenomenon between the bearing and its environment were entered at boundary conditions. Pores closure at the surface of the bore was also taken into account. Numerical results are in a good agreement with available experimental results. The successive steps in the development of the model have demonstrated the phenomena that are essential to the good operation of the porous journal bearings. The resulting flow is satisfactory for steady operation : there are no ail leaks and no penetration of air into the bearing

Full textThe numerical methods used to solve the problems in lubrication are : finite difference, finite volume and finite element. In a first step we compared the results obtained with the first two methods. For geometry where the film thickness varies continuously, the finite volume method allows to check the conservation of the mass on the entire contact area. When the lubricating film has a geometrical discontinuity, the finite difference method leads to erroneous results. We developed an approach using the finite volume where the discontinuity of the pressure field is described by a generalized Bernoulli equation. Finally we develop a finite volume method which makes possible to treat arbitrary geometris. We applied this modeling to calculate the performances of a hybrid journal bearing comprising pockets of non - conventional form (rectangular, triangular and circular)

Full textThe fluid bearing in the thermal engines are used to guide in rotation certain bodies (rod, crankshaft ). High speed associated with the mass reduction of engine bearings induced high temperature for the lubricated contacts. A numerical procedure of TEHD 3D lubrication, based on finite elements method, was developed. This one described two-dimensional Reynolds Generalized equation, three-dimensional energy equation and heat equation for the calculation of the pressure, the temperatures in film and solids. The validation of the TEHD 3D model was carried out for a steady state bearing. The results are compared with a TEHD 2D model and with experimental data. A good agreement on the temperature is observed between the TEHD 3D model and the experimental data. The comparison between the 3D and 2D numerical models showed that taking into account the heat axial evacuation is essential for a good pattern. The functional specifications as well as the technical description of experimental device "MEGAPASCALE" was presented. This one allows tests under high speed (20000 rev/min) and important dynamical loads (90 kN) which correspond to real operating conditions

Full textThe thesis activities are made on two different test rigs. On the first test rig, the dynamic characteristics of a hybrid aerostatic bearing are experimentally investigated in a rigid rotor configuration. The rotor is driven up to 60 krpm by an impulse turbine and is horizontally mounted on two identical aerostatic bearings fed with are pressures up to 11 bar. Dynamic loads consist either of impacts provided by a hammer or of added unbalance masses. The test rig can measure the bearing feeding pressures and flow, the rotation speed, the impact force, the displacements of the two bearings and the bearing housing accelerations. This experimental information together with the equations of motion of the rotor enables the identification of the dynamic coefficients of the bearings. A validation of these coefficients is providing by the unbalanced response of the rotor. The second part, on the second test rig, presents the results of the experimental analysis of static and dynamic characteristics of a generation 1 foil bearing. The test rig is of floating bearing type, and can reach the speed of 40 krpm. Two different casings are used for start up and for measurement of dynamic coefficients. In its first configuration, the test rig is designed to measure the start up torque. In its second configuration, a different casing is used to measure the impedances of the foil bearing. Stiffness and damping coefficients are identified from the complex impedances and enable the calculation of natural frequencies. The experimental results show that the dynamic characteristics of the tested bearing have a weak dependence on the rotation speed but vary with the excitation frequency

Full textThis study is related to compliant foil air journal bearings. In order to optimise the load capacity, an original method for the definition of compliant profiles is proposed. The influence of some design parameters on this characteristic has been studied. For dynamic analyses, the linear method is commonly used. The work presented here clearly shows its limitations and the better results obtained from a step by step calculation. Using a simple structural damping model allows to understand the influence of the compliant structure on the high levels of stability of these bearings. Moreover, published studies on non linear rotordynamics often use rigid symmetric rotors. Therefore, this work has been focused on the dynamic behaviour of flexible rotors supported by non linear air journal bearings

Full textThermal effects in hydrodynamic bearing have been widely studied in the past few years, as well as mechanical effects, but only few studies gathered the two approaches. The aim of this work has been to develop as precise a thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) modelisation as possible by taking into account thermal effects as well as thermal and mechanical deformations. Moreover, experimentations have validated this study regardless of whether it is boundary conditions or assumptions which are being considered. Misaligned and worn bearings have been considered. Experimental data have been obtained for various operating conditions including misalignment. A good agreement is found between experimental data and numerical results. The influence of solid displacements on bearing performance has been analyzed under severe operating conditions (large load, high speed, high misalignment torque). Mechanical and thermal deformations were found to be very significant in precisely determining the performance of a bearing subjected to severe operating conditions. In addition, the use of the TEHD model becomes imperative as soon as specific pressure or speed goes over certain acceptable limits

Full textControl of mixed lubrication conditions is a complex challenge to meet since it requires understanding of several coupled phenomena: fluid flow between rough surfaces, elasto-plastic deformation of asperities, surface wear. The goal of this study is to propose an approach of mixed lubrication conditions in the context of ICE bearings. The first part gives an overview of key theoretical and numerical modeling dedicated to the analysis of bearings in hydrodynamic and mixed conditions. The second chapter is dedicated to the phenomenon of flow between two rough surfaces. Starting from the model proposed by Cheng and Patir, a new definition of flow factors is proposed. This model takes into account the direction of surface textures. Several parametric calculations have identified selection criteria for rough surfaces used to determine the new flow factors coefficients. The purpose of Chapter 3 is to detail three existing statistical contact models of rough interface asperities. Several comparisons permit to extract the advantages and disadvantages of each model and especially to see their applications in the study of mixed lubrication in ICE bearings. To a better understanding of their limits, the statistical models were compared to a deterministic finite element model. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the study of wear. Three wear models based on Archard's law are detailed. Finally, the different flow, contact and wear models are integrated in a numerical prediction tool and used to simulate the behavior of a big-end connecting rod bearing

Full textThe connecting rod is not a single body but a multi-body solid. A non-appropriate screw tightening, coupled with the solid discontinuities, can lead to undesirable phenomena such as the rotation of the shell in its housing. Despite modern numerical tools, capable to predict the bearing EHD behaviour, there are still many damages related to cumulative microslip between the bearing shell and the conrod body. The difficulty of modelling the shell/conrod contact is mainly due to the interaction between the solids and the operating conditions. This study presents a solution to analyse this problem, by coupling an elastohydrodynamic (EHD) software (ACCEL) with a commercial software (ABAQUS) able to predict the frictional contact between the shell and the conrod. After a literature review of previous studies dedicated to the numerical and experimental modelling of connecting rod bearings, the first part is dedicated to a description of the numerical models used to predict the EHD behaviour of lubricated bearings. Follows the presentation of the techniques used to study the dry frictional contact mechanics. The next part presents the adopted solution used to couple the two software. The model was first validated in the case of a bearing submitted to a rotating load. Subsequently, several parametric calculations are presented. We were able to show the influence of the operating conditions (load diagram, velocity,...) as well as other characteristics of the conrod (friction coefficient, thickness of the shell, etc.) on the performances of the bearing and more exactly on the microslip between the shells and the conrod body

Full textThe study of the global behaviour of mechanisms such as helicopter and autombile gearboxes showed that the highly non-linear behaviour of bearings prevents from isolating the bearings from the rest of the structure for a precise study in term of stresses and of displacements. An approach of the modelling of bearings and of their environment with consideration of the deformation of the rings is proposed. This approach, which is based upon the Finite Element Method (FEM), gives real boundary conditions for fine study of components optimizations. It permits to quantify the mutual influence between the bearings and the real environment. The realization of prototypes and of experiences requires delays and costs high. A software with pre- and post-processors (automatic meshing, visualization,. . . ) for CAD adapted to the industrial Design Offices permits to reduce sensibly these constraints and increases the knowledge of the real behaviour of the mechanism

Full textThis thesis studies the behavior of journal bearings functioning in the mixed lubrication regime. Deterministic numerical models are proposed, which take into account the roughness effects using very fine meshes. Four aspects related to the mixed lubrication regime are studied in detail: numerical generation of rough surfaces, modeling of mechanical deformations, modeling of the elasto-plastic contact between rough and smooth surfaces, and modeling of the lubricant flow between a rough surface and a smooth surface in relative movement. Mechanical deformations are computed with a fast two-mesh approach and compliance matrices computed by structural simulations. Contact is modeled using an active-set / contact-set iterative method. Lubricant flow is modeled using the Reynolds equation, with the finite volumes method. A simulation code for mixed-lubricated partial journal bearings is proposed, which includes deformation calculus, contact modeling and thin-film lubrication modeling components. Piezo-viscosity, plasticity and cavitation are taken into account in a simplified manner. This code was applied in numerical simulations of severely loaded bearings (specific pressures up to 55 MPa), using meshes of 3. 6 million nodes. A study on the influence of three types of roughness (longitudinal, isotropic and transversal), bearing material and lubricant piezo-viscosity over bearing behavior was subsequently conducted. Discussed results include: film thickness, attitude angle, viscous friction torque and contact (dry) friction torque, contact area, plasticity percentage, etc. Stribeck curves showing the evolution of the global friction coefficient are also presented

Full textPrediction of vibro-acoustic behaviour became a decisive quality factor in geared transmission design. This is of great importance in Aeronautical and Automobile domains where convenience is inseparable of noise reduction. It's the subject of this PhD thesis which main purpose was to establish a kinematics and model of gear behaviour. Significant validations were obtained by dynamic transmission error measurement on an industrial test rig. An original technique was used for this experimental set-up. Influences of main design parameters (contact and overlap ratio, profile modifications,…) and operating conditions (speed, torque, misalignments,…) were studied. Main gear mesh interface dynamic models used in literature were considered and obtained results, were systematically compared. In this context, using a constant meshing stiffness appears as the most powerful modelization. At least, obtained results confirm the great influence of behaviour coupling between different components of geared transmission. This particularly the case for bearing modelization which directly critical operating range location

Full textGlobal numerical models making it possible to simulate the dynamic behavior of automobile gearboxes have been developed. They are based on the Finite Element Method and their principal originality is to integrate the whole of the couplings between the various technological components (shafts, gears, bearings, casings). Before being exploited in engineering and design departments, these numerical models must be validated with experiments. It is the purpose of this thesis. The complexity of such mechanical structures makes difficult the implementation of "traditional" updating procedures calling upon the mathematical methods described in the bibliography. Indeed, the gearbox cannot be "isolated" from the rest of the power transmission chain and the tests must be carried out on a mechanism under load and possibly under operating conditions. A trial run articulated in two great stages was thus implemented. The first one is devoted to the study of the system under load but non-rotating, and is organized according to a "step by step" procedure : starting with the shafts, the other components are gradually integrated into the studied system, first the bearings, then the gears and finally the casings. Thus, the modeling of these various parts has been validated and the existence of significant couplings has been confirmed. In the second stage, the gearbox is studied in operating conditions. Some privileged observing parameters have been selected (transmission error, bearing loads). Therefore, an original load sensor directly integrated into a ball bearing in order to preserve the architecture and the operating conditions of the gearbox has been manufactured using the technology of piezoelectric films. A good agreement between experiments and computations have been established (especially from vibrations amplitude point of view), ensuring the validity of the main modeling assumptions (linearization of the dynamic behavior around a static working point, use of the quasi-static transmission error under load to model the excitation generated by the gears)

Full textThe aim of this work has been to develop global models applied to the statical analysis of hyperstatic and pre-loaded power transmission mechanical systems. This models are based on the finite elements method and take into account the interaction between the different technological elements. They improve the precision results of the digital mock-up. A driving bogie has been chosen as an application of this work in collaboration with the “ALSTOM Transport” company. The bogie presents numerous hyperstatic loops and flexible pre-loaded components. The non-linear behaviour of the suspension springs, due to great geometrical variations and contact with clearance has been studies separately. Various loadings have been applied to the bogie : suspension springs angle orientation, external force on the frame, engine torques. The joining components (bearings, springs) interaction with the adjacent structure has been analysed

Two computational techniques are used : wavelet transform for defect's detection and artificial neural networks for classification and diagnosis. Application of the studies concepts leads to early detection of unbalanced force defects and flaking paths defects of the outer ring of bearing. In this frame, classification approaches based on probability estimation and neural techniques (RBF, LVQ) have been implemented. Full textRolling bearing models are express with the classic hypotheses of rigid rings; it means that only the internal clearance and the contact deformation drive the internal equilibrium. Current space and weight constrains lead to develop new bearing and shaft with thin sections. While the load intensity increase. Consequently, the structure, including the rings, deforms. This structural deformation modifies the internal equilibrium. A multi scale approach is adopted to include this deformation in analytical computer code. This code gives a precise description of the internal equilibrium and the contact deformation and is able to interact with a finite element code to include the structural deformation. The analysis of the contribution of this deformation shows an evolution of the internal clearance. Consequently, the internal equilibrium: angle contact loads, and the mechanical bearing characteristic is substantially modified

Full textThe life of lubricated mechanisms is a function of the lubricant film thickness separating the contacting solids. The degree of lubricant starvation affects this film thickness and the life of the mechanisms. A free boundary model has been adopted. The lubricant distribution in the inlet of the contact is used as a boundary condition. The "multigrid" and "Multi-Level Multi-Integral" techniques, used to solve the equations describing the problem, are briefly exposed. The pressure field and the deformed geometry of the surfaces are obtained on the computational domain. This solution allows the validation of an analytical model developed to study the ejection flow and to quantify this flow in the boundary layer surrounding the contact. The flow is governed by the width of the boundary layer. This width, determines the contact response to a lubricant starvation. The dimensionless width can also be used to predict the persistence of local lubricant starvation, in a particular mechanism

Full textThe gearbox transmits and gears down the mechanical energy and the engine torque to the axles. The increase of engine torque with the arrival of new technologies causes significant mechanical stresses on rotational guiding of gears. The mechanical endurance of this guiding passes by the optimisation of the quantity of lubricant brought by the system "drilled shaft". This one may drain and cease forwarding the lubricant to the contacts of the gearbox stacking. To prevent the malfunction of drilled shaft, it is thus necessary to avoid the formation of meniscus in axial drilling acting on the feed system by the reduction of cross-section of a deflector or a spout. It is also possible to increase the size of axial drilling so that the lubricant fills partially its volume. Moreover, it is necessary to improve the distribution of lubricant with each radial drilling

Full textThe aim of this project, was to develop global numerical dynamic models of automobile gearboxes. These models can be used by the Design Office in CAD environment in the vicinity of reducing noise, and of defining dynamic transmission conditions. These analysis follows the principle of Finite Element Method. "Structural" elements are discretized using standard finite elements, and linkage element behaviors are linearized around static working point. This static point is defined by numerical procedures which take into account bearing non-linear behavior. Special numerical elements have been set up to modelize gears and bearings dynamic behavior. These global dynamic models make it possible to determine eigenmodes and dynamic responses of the whole gearbox. Numerical tools and criteria are defined to evaluate influence of technological components on the global dynamic behavior. First studies are realized on an automobile gearbox kinematic chain. They highlight the bearing influence on the global behavior, and how important it is to model them accurately. Importance of static environment is also shown. In a second step, housing dynamic "deformability" is taken into account and dynamic couplings between housing and kinematic chain deformations are evaluated. At the end of these works, which have been validated by experimental studies, global dynamic behavior of automobile gearboxes could be provided and technological choice consequences could be evaluated

Full textDuring various maintenance operations in power plants, some new issues have come to light. One of these issues is the degradation of the supporting and guiding components for the rotating shafts. The degradation has resulted in scratches on bearings which leads to discontinuities of the oil film. The operator of the plant should provide a fast diagnosis of the influence of these scratches. The aim of the work is to examine these issues, to acquire a better understanding of physical phenomenon and to improve numerical predictions. Theoretical and experimental studies have been done for plain journal bearings. The numerical model is based on a thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) resolution that allows to take into account solid deformations induced by the pressure and temperature fields. A computer code has been developed to solve the hydrodynamic (HD) problem. An experimental study has been performed on a two lobe journal bearing with a scratch on the rotating shaft at two scratch locations and for several scratch depth. For all of these configurations, local pressures and temperatures have been measured for different rotational speeds and applied loads. The scratch depth is one parameter that affects the most the journal bearing behavior. It influences more significantly the pressure field, with a drop of pressure near the scratch, than the temperature field. Those results have been compared to the numerical results obtained with an internal EDF software that can provide TEHD solutions
