Abstract:
Abstract Reproductive isolation is a fundamental step in speciation. While sex chromosomes have been linked to reproductive isolation in many model systems, including hominids, genetic studies of the contribution of sex chromosome loci to speciation for natural populations are relatively sparse. Natural hybrid zones can help identify genomic regions contributing to reproductive isolation, like hybrid incompatibility loci, since these regions exhibit reduced introgression between parental species. Here, we use a primate hybrid zone (Alouatta palliata × Alouatta pigra) to test for reduced introgression of X-linked SNPs compared to autosomal SNPs. To identify X-linked sequence in A. palliata, we used a sex-biased mapping approach with whole-genome re-sequencing data. We then used genomic cline analysis with reduced-representation sequence data for parental A. palliata and A. pigra individuals and hybrids (n = 88) to identify regions with non-neutral introgression. We identified ~26 Mb of non-repetitive, putatively X-linked genomic sequence in A. palliata, most of which mapped collinearly to the marmoset and human X chromosomes. We found that X-linked SNPs had reduced introgression and an excess of ancestry from A. palliata as compared to autosomal SNPs. One outlier region with reduced introgression overlaps a previously described “desert” of archaic hominin ancestry on the human X chromosome. These results are consistent with a large role for the X chromosome in speciation across animal taxa and further, suggest shared features in the genomic basis of the evolution of reproductive isolation in primates.

Bezanson, Michelle. "Ontogenetic Patterns of Positional Behavior in Cebus Capucinus and Alouatta Palliata." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194475.

Full text
Abstract:
Positional behavior is the measurable and observable link between the biology and behavior of an animal in its environment. In this dissertation, I examine ontogenetic patterns of positional behavior in infant, juvenile, and adult white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) and mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata) inhabiting the same tropical forest in Costa Rica. During growth and development ontogenetic changes in body size, limb proportions, and motor skills are likely to influence locomotion and posture through the arboreal canopy. I collected data on positional behavior, activity, prehensile-tail use, branch size, branch angle, and crown location during a 12 month period at Estación Biológica La Suerte in northeastern Costa Rica. The data set is comprised of 401.3 hours of data on Cebus capucinus and 554.3 hours of data on Alouatta palliata totaling 955.7 hours of data or 57,344 individual activity records.Life history timing and differences in rates of growth did not predictably influence the development of adult-like positional behaviors in Cebus and Alouatta. In both species, infancy was characterized by high proportions of dorsal, ventral, and side riding on the mother with smaller proportions of independent positional modes observed during play, explore, active posture, and feed/forage. Young Cebus resembled the adult pattern of positional behavior by six months of age while howlers exhibited significant differences in several positional behavior categories through 24 months of age. The positional repertoire of both species revealed similarities in the types of modes used during feed/forage and travel in juveniles and adults. For example, in juvenile and adult age categories of Cebus, feeding and foraging included high proportions of quadrupedal walk, sit, and squat in conjunction with climbing, leaping, and suspensory behaviors. In howlers, the degree to which coordination and increases in body mass during ontogeny as limiting factors in the development of adult-like positional competence is unclear. Data presented here suggest that the environment exerts different pressures on growing Cebus and Alouatta that may relate to diet, energy expenditure, foraging skill, and/or social learning.

Abstract:
The evolutionary origins of human handedness are still unknown. The study of lateralized behaviour in our closest relatives, the nonhuman primates, is useful to clarify how this trait appeared and evolved in our species. In the present study, lateralized behaviour was assessed in a population of 32 free-ranging Mexican mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata mexicana) for thirteen spontaneous motor patterns, at individual and group levels, as well as the effect that age, sex and posture have on its strength and direction. The studied population of howler monkeys displayed only few significant lateral biases at the individual level with single motor patterns (Binomial tests, p≤0.05). No biases towards the use of a particular limb or side of the body were found at a population level. Therefore, even though some individuals showed significant limb/side preference with single motor patterns, no signs of task specialization, side specialization, or true handedness were found. Similarly, no effects of sex, age or posture were found on the direction or strength of lateralized behaviour. The general absence of limb/side preferences found in this population may be due to the constraints imposed by the arboreal life and/or the type of diet. Possible causal agents of the few significant individual biases found here may be the presence of handicaps and/or experience. Further research is needed in order to assess whether the lack of human-like handedness reported in this study is only specific to the studied population, a general phenomenon of the genus Alouatta or perhaps of all the Platyrrhini.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the competitive and cooperative strategies of male mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata) living within a fragmented habitat at La Pacifica (LP), Costa Rica. Mantled howlers exhibit considerable intraspecific variation in their social behavior, and there remains much to learn regarding the nature of their sociality and the proximate mechanisms that underlie it, particularly among males living in multimale groups. In contrast to males at other mantled howler study sites, males at LP had higher rates of within-group agonism, and exhibited clear dominance hierarchies. Both groups inhabited a fragmented forest, which may exert greater pressure to compete for both food and reproductive resources than mantled howler males living in more intact forests. However, data from this dissertation also suggest that males may adjust competitive relationships as forest fragment characteristics within the same population vary. The group inhabiting the larger forest fragment experienced higher intergroup competition but lower intragroup competition than the group inhabiting the smaller fragment, allowing higher-ranking males to be more tolerant of subordinates accessing key resources, including females, in order to cooperate in group defense. Despite clear hierarchies, males at LP nevertheless form both preferred and avoided associations with specific males, which suggest that cooperative relationships among males have adaptive value. Neither rank nor age emerged as clear drivers shaping competitive and cooperative relationships. Collectively, these results suggest that male mantled howlers show considerable flexibility in their social relationships that are likely dependent on a complexity of ecological, social, and demographic factors.

Abstract:
The objective of this dissertation is to examine the method of composition of Sá de Miranda?s comedies and the way the author made use of the poetic recreation process denominated imitatio to promote the intertextual dialogue with their paradigms. It concerns to the intertextual analysis of texts produced within a specific historical and literary context in which imitating was the rule. The author who composes literary works under this rule has as his first intention to get into a poetic tradition which accepts and presupposes the alusion to preceding texts, i. e., an autonomous poetic tradition in which the intertextual relations take place in a conscious and technical manner and the work of imitation results of the creative re-elaboration of the patterns. The first chapter comes to situate Sá de Miranda?s comic work in the historical and cultural context in which it was generated. The second chapter deals with imitatio and intertextuality, establishing terminology and methodology for intertextual analysis of specifically literary works which have the intentional appropriation of texts as literary creation principle. The third chapter presents a brief history of the Roman theater, from its origins up to the arising of the fabula palliata, the Roman adaptation of the Greek New Comedy, which was the model of comedy imitated by the Italian poets of the Renaissance, whose works became paradigms to the Portuguese poet too. The last chapter is dedicated to the intertextual analysis of Sá de Miranda?s Comedy.

Full text
Abstract:
The interest in identifying the ecological factors that influence animal abundance has taken on a new importance with the need to develop informed conservation plans for endangered and threatened species. With respect to forest-dwelling primates, these issues are critical because tropical forests are undergoing rapid anthropogenic transformation. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate whether the Mexican howler monkeys population at Los Tuxtlas (Mexico) are negatively influenced by habitat fragmentation effects, particularly by those associated with stress and their possible influence on feeding intra-group competition and reproduction. To this end, over the course of a year, we studied several physiological (glucocorticoid levels) and behavioural parameters (fractal dimension of behaviour) of three groups of howler monkeys inhabiting three forest fragments characterised by decreasing habitat quality. The major levels of glucocorticoids found in the group inhabiting the poor quality fragment, suggest that an extensive habitat fragmentation could led to chronic elevation of stress levels and, with that, affect the viability of howler monkeys groups confine into forest fragments. Moreover, we registered an ascendant gradient in agonism levels in feeding context as decreasing the area and quality of the occupied fragment. Therefore, the pattern in stress level registered could be due to a low food availability and high intra-group competition for these resources. On the other hand, habitat fragmentation seems to affect the reproductive successes of howler monkeys at study area, but not yet their reproductive capacity. In conclusion, results suggest that exceeded a threshold of habitat disturbance and fragmentation, it is possible to reach a chronic stress situation, and therefore, to jeopardize the health and the long-term survival probabilities of free howler monkeys. We suggest that conservation strategies of this subspecies must be managed to the maintenance of great and not disturbing forests fragment more than the preservation of marginal population groups, and it should be immediately applied since the special tendency to the habitat disturbance of this subspecies.

Abstract:
Fyra teman innehållande 12 kategorier framkom i intervjuerna.
The aim was to improve late stage palliative care in an acute hospital setting concerning pain assessment and management, documented decision to shift to end-of-life care, follow-up talk and compliance to the Swedish palliative registry. The improvement work was further studied by exploring the staff’s experience of working with support from a palliative consultancy nurse.    Nolan's improvement model was used including 5 P, PDSA cycles and control charts such as P-charts to analyze the variation. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with 10 employees regarding their experiences, have been analyzed with content analysis.    The results show that more patients were assessed for pain, 89% and charted medical records entries increased by 21 %. The percentage of documented decision to shift to end-of-life care increased and more relatives are offered follow-up talk and patient and relatives were satisfied.   Four themes including 12 categories emerged in the interviews. The staff were generally very positive to the consultancy nurse as a support. Results showed a need for continuous education and the importance of collaboration and communication within the teams.   PDSA cycles and control charts proved to be valuable methods for improvement work in an acute hospital setting.

Abstract:
Lymphedema of the arm is a common complication of surgery involving removal of armpit lymph nodes. It is currently incurable, although it can be palliated by massage. Equivalent situations occur following lymphatic interference elsewhere in the body. In the developing world, lymphedema is also caused by elephantiasis.

Abstract:
Industrial pumps are generally used in a wide range of operating conditions from almost zero mass flow to mass flows larger than the design value. It has been often noted that the head-mass flow characteristic, at constant speed, presents a negative bump as the mass flow is somewhat smaller than the design mass flows. Flow and mechanical instabilities appear, which are unsafe for the facility. An experimental study has been undertaken in order to analyze and if possible to palliate these difficulties. A detailed flow analyzis has shown strong three dimensional effects and flow separations. From this better knowledge of the flow field, a particular device was designed and a strong attenuation of the negative bump was obtained.

Abstract:
Employing friction reduction coatings is one of the most effective methods to palliate the fretting damage. However, facing numerous available coatings, how to compare them and select the optimum one for a specific application is still a challenging task. In this paper, based on the investigation of the fretting behaviors of several bonded solid lubricant coatings, an energy approach in terms of “initial maximal dissipated energy density” was suggested to compare the tribological response of coatings. According to test results, the lifetime of each coating under different test parameters can be fitted by one master curve. The definition of this master curve for a given coating may be used for the prediction of the coating lifetime only by knowing the initial energy dissipated in the contact. The comparison of different master curves for different coatings can be employed to help the coating selection.
