Abstract:
Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world. In the process of its processing into Crude PalmOil (CPO), the palm oil processing industry produces various types of waste, including liquid wasteknown as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). POME contains organic matter that is high enough so it mustbe processed before being discarded into the environment. During this time, POME is treated usinganaerobic ponds which are quite large and produce metana gas. Metanae gas has a high level ofemissions, but it potential to become an energy source if it is utilized. Therefore, BPPT in collaborationwith PT. Perkebunan Nusantara 5 built a biogas production pilot plant from POME equivalent to 700kWfor boiler fuel at PKS Sei Pagar, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. The process of converting POMEinto biogas uses Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) technology. The research aims to choosethe best roof tank design for CSTR. The method used is the Pahl and Beitz method and the House ofQuality. The result of the study are the best specification planning data, which is 1400 mm in diameterand the construction site position at a height of 15350 mm from the bottom of the reactor, with use aninternal support column, with the best variant chosen is the fixed roof type with dome shape.

AbstractThe efficacy of two entomopathogenic biocontrol agents, Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) and Verticillium lecanii (Zimmerman) Viégas (reclassified now as Lecanicillium muscarium (Petch) Zare & Gams), against Thrips palmi Karny was investigated. Assessments of the effect of temperature on the efficacy of S. feltiae indicated that higher mortality of T. palmi was recorded at 20°C compared to either 15 or 25°C, whereas significantly higher T. palmi mortality followed application of L. muscarium at 25°C. Testing the control agents efficacy on three host plants; chrysanthemum, sweet pepper and cucumber, under constant temperature and high humidity conditions produced no significant difference in the level of T. palmi larval mortality on each host plant. Incorporating the chemical insecticide imidacloprid with both biological agents in a combined control strategy increased T. palmi juvenile mortality. The potential role of S. feltiae and L. muscarium within integrated pest management programmes for the control of T. palmi is discussed.

Abstract:
Treprostinil palmitil (TP) is a prodrug of treprostinil (TRE), a pulmonary vasodilator that has been previously formulated for inhaled administration via a nebulizer. TP demonstrates a sustained presence in the lungs with reduced systemic exposure and prolonged inhibition of hypoxia-induced pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo. Here, we report on re-formulation efforts to develop a more convenient solution-based metered-dose inhaler (MDI) formulation of TP, a treprostinil palmitil inhalation aerosol (TPIA) that matches the pharmacokinetic (PK) and efficacy profile of a nebulized TP formulation, treprostinil palmitil inhalation suspension (TPIS). MDI canisters were manufactured using a two-stage filling method. Aerosol performance, formulation solubility, and chemical stability assays were utilized for in vitro evaluation. For in vivo studies, TPIA formulations were delivered to rodents using an inhalation tower modified for MDI delivery. Using an iterative process involving evaluation of formulation performance in vitro (TP and excipient solubility, chemical stability, physical stability, and aerosol properties) and confirmatory testing in vivo (rat PK and efficacy, guinea pig cough), a promising formulation was identified. The optimized formulation, TPIA-W, demonstrates uniform in vitro drug delivery, a PK profile suitable for a once-daily administration, efficacy lasting at least 12 h in a hypoxic challenge model, and a significantly higher cough threshold than the parent drug treprostinil.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to contrast the fitness of Thrips palmi Karny reared on two of its hosts plants, Brassica oleracea L. leaves and Phaseolus vulgaris L. beans, life tables were constructed for T. palmi individuals reared on the two hostplants at 25°C using the age–stage, two-sex life table. The durations of the egg, first instar larva, pupa, and total immature stages of T. palmi reared on P. vulgaris were significantly longer than those reared on B. oleracea, whereas the adult preoviposition period, female adult longevity, and number of oviposition days of T. palmi reared on B. oleracea were significantly longer/greater than those on P. vulgaris. The fecundity (F) of T. palmi reared on B. oleracea (159.71 offspring/female) was significantly higher than in females reared on P. vulgaris (F = 122.98 offspring/female) despite the higher proportion of female adults that emerged on P. vulgaris. Although there were no significant differences in the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate (λ), net reproductive rate (R0), and mean generation time (T) between the two populations, computer projection showed that the T. palmi population will increase faster when reared on B. oleracea than on P. vulgaris. Our results demonstrate that population projection based on life table data is potentially an important tool in pest management. Furthermore, we used the bootstrap technique to demonstrate the variable effect that survival rate and fecundity at different ages can have on population parameters.

Abstract:
Abstract The term, ageism, refers to any form of personal or institutional prejudice or discrimination based on chronological age. Ageism may encompass attitudes and prejudices, as well as behaviors, highlighting the complex nature of ageist behaviors observed among students and professionals alike (Allen, Cherry, & Palmore, 2009). We examined the prevalence of self-reported ageist behaviors in a sample of college students who ranged in age from 18 to 44 years to test the hypothesis that aging knowledge would be associated with self-reported ageist behaviors (positive and negative). The study sample was comprised of adults who were enrolled in classes at Louisiana State University (n = 110). Most of these students were traditional aged college students (18-25 years old). Participants completed the Relating to Older People Evaluation (ROPE; Cherry & Palmore, 2008), the Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ; Palmore, 1998), and the Knowledge of Memory Aging Questionnaire (KMAQ: Cherry et al., 2003). Results indicated that positive ageist behaviors were more frequent than negative ageist behaviors. Men endorsed positive and negative ageism items more than women reported. Follow-up analyses on participants’ responses to the two aging knowledge questionnaires showed that increased knowledge of aging was significantly correlated with diminished reports of negative ageist behaviors, after controlling for age and gender. These results imply that self-reported ageist behaviors are associated with aging knowledge. Strengthening college curricula by including course offerings in adult development and aging may improve self-reported ageist behaviors among college students.

Abstract:
Thrips and thrips-transmitted tospoviruses cause significant losses in crop yields worldwide. The melon thrips (Thrips palmi) is not only a pest of cucurbit crops, but also a vector that transmits tospoviruses, such as the watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV). Vector transmission of tospoviruses has been well studied in the tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV)–Frankliniella occidentalis model system; however, until now the transmission mode of WSMoV by T. palmi has not been sufficiently examined. The results of the transmission assays suggest that T. palmi transmits WSMoV in a persistent manner, and that the virus is mainly transmitted by adults, having been ingested at the first-instar larval stage. Complementary RNAs corresponding to the NSm and NSs genes of WSMoV were detected in viruliferous thrips by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction; NSs protein was also detected in viruliferous thrips by western blotting, verifying the replication of WSMoV in T. palmi. Furthermore, we demonstrated that in thrips infected with WSMoV at the first-instar larval stage, the virus eventually infected various tissues of the adult thrips, including the primary salivary glands. Taken together, these results suggest that T. palmi transmits WSMoV in a persistent-propagative mode. The results of this study make a significant contribution to the understanding of the transmission biology of tospoviruses in general.

Abstract:
AbstractA quick and developmental-stage non-limiting method of the identification of vectors of tospoviruses, such as Thrips tabaci and T. palmi, is important in the study of vector transmission, insecticide resistance, biological control, etc. Morphological identification of these thrips vectors is often a stumbling block in the absence of a specialist and limited by polymorphism, sex, stage of development, etc. Molecular identification, on the other hand, is not hampered by the above factors and can easily be followed by a non-specialist with a little training. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) exhibits reliable inter-species variations as compared to the other markers. In this communication, we present the differences in the mtCOI partial sequence of morphologically identified specimens of T. tabaci and T. palmi collected from onion and watermelon, respectively. Species-specific markers, identified in this study, could successfully determine T. tabaci and T. palmi, which corroborated the morphological identification. Phylogenetic analyses showed that both T. tabaci and T. palmi formed different clades as compared to the other NCBI accessions. The implication of these variations in vector efficiency has to be investigated further. The result of this investigation is useful in the quick identification of T. tabaci and T. palmi, a critical factor in understanding the epidemiology of the tospoviruses, their management and also in quarantine.

Abstract:
Background: Palmo-plantar psoriasis in a non-inflammatory skin condition in which it is capable to produce functional disability. It is the type of psoriasis which occurs in palms and soles together with features like scaling, erythema and itching, pustules cracked & pain, and is limited. Palmo-plantar is the disease which does not have a specific line of treatment, but can be assessed and treated with classical line of Ayurvedic management. This Palmo-plantar not only affects physically but also disturbs the mental health of patient In Ayurveda all the skin diseases are described under single topic; Kushtha (Skin disorders). As Palmo-Plantar psoriasis is compared with Vipadika Kshudra Kushta (cracked bilateral soles & palms) in Ayurveda, the predominant Dosha’s (fundamental bodily bio-elements) are Vata (governs movement of body & mind) & Kapha (controls immune system) in which Vaman Karma (Emesis) is useful. Aim: To evaluate the role of Ayurveda treatment modalities in Vipadika Kshudra Kushta. Materials & Methods: A case report of 56 year old male patient suffering from scaling of both palms and soles with severe pain since 16 years is presented in this article where the patient got satisfactory relief by adopting Shodhan Karma (purification treatment) followed by Shaman Chikitsa (pacifying treatment) with dietary and behavioral lifestyle modification. The symptoms were reduced by Vaman procedure. Result: Patient got about 80% relief after the treatment by which one can say that the palmo-plantar psoriasis can be treated by Ayurveda Medicine.

A significant difference was observed in the developmental period (first instar to adult) between the GBNV-infected and healthy thrips, wherein the developmental period of GBNV-infected thrips was decreased. However, there was no effect on the other parameters such as preadult mortality, adult longevity, and fecundity. Further investigation on a settling and feeding choice assay of T. palmi to GBNV-infected and healthy plants showed that T. palmi preferred GBNV-infected cowpea plants more than the healthy cowpea plants. This preference was also noticed for leaf disks from GBNV-infected cowpea, groundnut, and tomato plants.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of total rainfall, mean temperature, natural enemies, chemical composition of leaves, levels of nitrogen and potassium on leaves and density of leaf trichomes on attack intensity of Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Homoptera: Aphididae) on plantations of the eggplant (Solanum melongena) in two regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Higher numbers of A. gossypii/leaf and T. palmi/leaf were observed in plantations of this eggplant in the Municipalities of Viçosa and Guidoval, respectively. Guidoval had a rainy and hotter weather than Viçosa. T. palmi was almost positivelly correlated with rainfall (r= 0.49, P= 0.0538) while A. gossypii seemed to be more affected by mean temperature (r= -0.31; P= 0.1134). Higher number of aphids in eggplants in Viçosa than in Guidoval could be explained by the higher number of natural enemies such as Adialytus spp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Cycloneda sanguinea (L.) and Exochomus bimaculosus Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Chrysoperla spp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) in this municipality. However, only Adialytus spp. was significativelly correlated with aphid populations. Higher number of T. palmi in eggplant plantations of Guidoval than in Viçosa could be due to the absence of its possible Eulophidae parasitoid in the first municipality. The spiders were significativelly correlated with this pest in both municipalities.

Abstract:
We investigated the maximal advancement of the homodigital neurovascular island flap with the digit in full extension and its correlation to the digital length. In 32 adult cadaveric digits, flaps measuring 1 × 1 cm were sequentially elevated to different dissection points. Dissection of the flap to the proximal interphalangeal joint crease, palmo-digital crease, division of adjacent digital artery and the superficial arch resulted in flap advancement of 8, 12, 15 and 18 mm, respectively. The degree of advancement correlated to the length of the finger and was approximately 19% of the finger length. We conclude that dissection of a homodigital antegrade neurovascular island flap to the proximal interphalangeal joint, palmo-digital crease, after ligation of adjacent digital artery and the superficial arch allows progressively more advancement. The advancement obtained by flap dissection to the palmo-digital crease was about 19% of the finger length.

Abstract:
AbstractThrips palmi and Frankliniella occidentalis (order Thysanoptera) are thrips species that represent major plant pests. They are polyphagous insects capable of adversely affecting crop production. As such, in the European Union, these thrips species should be regulated as quarantine organisms. T. palmi and F. occidentalis can cause considerable damage to susceptible plants by feeding on them and transmitting several viruses responsible for serious plant diseases. Successful pest control strategies are based on an early, fast, and reliable diagnosis, which precedes the selection of appropriate steps to limit the effects of harmful organisms. We herein describe a novel diagnostic approach that enables the sensitive and species-specific detection (and differentiation) of these pests in a duplex polymerase chain reaction assay, which was adapted for both standard and real-time quantitative assays. Our method is based on the amplification of a 5.8S-internal transcribed spacer 2 ribosomal DNA fragment that is conserved between T. palmi and F. occidentalis.

Abstract:
The morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla of Megalurothrips usitatus Bagnall and Thrips palmi Karny were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These are serious pests of various economically important crops, and their antennae are important in chemical communication. The antennae of both species consist of a scape, pedicel, and flagellum, but the flagellum of M. usitatus is made up of six sub-segments, whereas that of T. palmi consists of five sub-segments. Seven morphological sensilla types, including Böhm bristle (BB), sensilla campaniformia (Sca), three types of sensilla basiconica (Sb1, Sb2 and Sb3), two types of sensilla chaetica (Sch1 and Sch2), sensilla styloconica (Sst), sensilla trichodea (St), and sensilla cavity (Scav), were recorded in both species. The scape and pedicels exhibited Sch1, BB and Sca. The flagellum exhibited two types of Sch, three types of Sb, St, Sst and Scav. Based on these results, the putative function of the sensilla of M. usitatus and T. palmi are also discussed.

Abstract:
Thrips are important pests of agricultural, horticultural, and forest crops worldwide. In addition to direct damages caused by feeding, several thrips species can transmit diverse tospoviruses. The present understanding of thrips–tospovirus relationships is largely based on studies of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). Little is known about other predominant tospoviruses and their thrips vectors. In this study, we report the progression of watermelon bud necrosis virus (WBNV) infection in its vector, melon thrips (Thrips palmi). Virus infection was visualized in different life stages of thrips using WBNV-nucleocapsid protein antibodies detected with FITC-conjugated secondary antibodies. The anterior midgut was the first to be infected with WBNV in the first instar larvae. The midgut of T. palmi was connected to the principal salivary glands (PSG) via ligaments and the tubular salivary glands (TSG). The infection progressed to the PSG primarily through the connecting ligaments during early larval instars. The TSG may also have an ancillary role in disseminating WBNV from the midgut to PSG in older instars of T. palmi. Infection of WBNV was also spread to the Malpighian tubules, hindgut, and posterior portion of the foregut during the adult stage. Maximum virus-specific fluorescence in the anterior midgut and PSG indicated the primary sites for WBNV replication. These findings will help to better understand the thrips–tospovirus molecular relationships and identify novel potential targets for their management. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the WBNV dissemination path in its vector, T. palmi.
