Abstract:
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the major source of carbon in aquatic environments and may be derived from allochthonous or autochthonous sources. This study presents the first DOM characterisation in streams from two contrasting Argentinean regions (the Pampas and Patagonia). We found that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and absorption coefficients at 254 and 350nm (a254 and a350) were higher in Pampean than in Patagonian streams. DOM from streams in both regions contained compounds with high molecular weight and highly variable a350 per DOC; it has been suggested that this could be an indicator of lignin content. The characterisation of DOM reflects the agricultural signal and the effect of autochthonous sources in Pampean streams, whereas a more pristine condition with high input from terrestrial environments was recorded in Patagonian streams. No sign of DOM photodegradation was observed in either region. Fluorescence-based indices suggest a more recent input of DOM in Pampean streams, whereas a highly humified component was recorded in Patagonian streams. The combined use of absorbance and fluorescence-based techniques was useful for understanding the quantity and quality of DOM in these contrasting regions in Argentina.

Abstract:
An Early Cambrian pluton, known as the Guasayán pluton, has been identified in the central area of Sierra de Guasayán, northwestern Argentina. A U-Pb zircon Concordia age of 533±4 Ma was obtained by LA-MC-ICP-MS and represents the first report of robustly dated Early Cambrian magmatism for the northwestern Sierras Pampeanas. The pluton was emplaced in low-grade metasedimentary rocks and its magmatic assemblage consists of K-feldspar (phenocrysts)+plagioclase+quartz+biotite, with zircon, apatite, ilmenite, magnetite and monazite as accessory minerals. Geochemically, the granitic rock is a metaluminous subalkaline felsic granodiorite with SiO2=69.24%, Na2O+K2O=7.08%, CaO=2.45%, Na2O/ K2O=0.71 and FeO/MgO=3.58%. Rare earth element patterns show moderate slope (LaN/YbN=8.05) with a slightly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*=0.76). We report the first in situ Hf isotopes data (εHft=-0.12 to -4.76) from crystallized zircons in the Early Cambrian granites of the Sierras Pampeanas, helping to constrain the magma source and enabling comparison with other Pampean granites. The Guasayán pluton might provide a link between Early Cambrian magmatism of the central Sierras Pampeanas and that of the Eastern Cordillera, contributing to define the western boundary of the Pampean paleo-arc.

Abstract:
The Sierra de Guasayán (Eastern Sierras Pampeanas, Argentina) is formed by low to medium grade metamorphic rocks intruded by Cambrian metaluminous (La Soledad quartz-diorite), slightly peraluminous (Guasayán, El Escondido and El Martirizado granodiorite plutons), and strongly peraluminous (Alto Bello granodiorite) granitoids of the Pampean magmatic arc. Chemical compositions of amphibole, plagioclase, biotite, and titanite indicate that these granitoids were emplaced at low pressure (mostly <3 kbar) and temperature (<770 °C) under oxidizing conditions (QFM + 1 and QFM + 2), which are similar to the emplacement conditions reported for other granites of the Pampean magmatic arc. Mineral assemblages and whole-rock and mineral chemistry of the granitoids from the Sierra de Guasayán indicate an I-type affinity for the La Soledad quartz-diorite (amphibole, biotite, and titanite), S-type affinity for the Alto Bello granodiorite (biotite, muscovite, cordierite, and sillimanite), and a hybrid nature for the main Guasayán and El Escondido plutons (biotite, monazite, and magnetite). This hybrid nature is supported by the presence of abundant mafic microgranular enclaves and rapakivi texture and by published zircon Hf-isotope data (εHfi ranging from −4.76 to −0.12). This suggests, in turn, the involvement of hybridization in the genesis of these granitoids, which seems to be a common mechanism operating in the Pampean magmatic arc.

Abstract:
The insertion of Argentina as an exporter of primary products and manufactures of agricultural origin explains the importance of agricultural production in the process of national accumulation. In consequence of this, economic science, from different conceptions, has focused on the study of this sector to know its potential to boost the growth and development of the Argentine economy. As a result of this, when approaching the specialized literature, there is a multiplicity of economic approaches that explain and analyze the Pampas agricultural sector from different perspectives. From our point of view, the dissent that is verified in the literature on this sector, is related to the way in which economic science addresses the phenomena that constitute its object of study. The aim of the present work consists in making a documentary analysis of the different explanations about the recent performance of the Pampean agricultural sector -specifically, the soy boom-, structuring it in such a way to expose the way in which they approach what they intend to explain. The result of the analysis not only manages to highlight the correspondence between the ways of knowing about agrarian explanations and the epistemological postulates of economic science, but also that which underpins the lack of consensus among specialists to explain the Pampean agrarian sector.

We studied small mammal assemblages recovered from owl pellets collected at 11 locations throughout the Argentina’s Pampean Region. We identified 21 species, including two marsupials, one bat, and 18 rodents. From the analysis of this dataset, we could distinguish three main groups of small mammals that currently inhabit the Pampean Region: 1) a group of taxa related to Pampean agroecosystems (Calomys spp., Akodon azarae, and Oligoryzomys flavescens); 2) a group of Brazilian species (Cavia aperea, Oxymycterus rufus, Necromys lasiurus, Necromys obscurus, Holochilus brasiliensis, and Monodelphis dimidiata); and 3) a group including species from Patagonia, Espinal and Monte phytogeographic provinces (Microcavia australis, Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, Eligmodontia typus, Graomys griseoflavus, and Akodon molinae). In addition, we documented the first record of a species of the large-bodied group of Calomys in Buenos Aires province, expanding its distribution ca. 420 km southward.

Abstract:
High-resolution studies of palaeorecords located closer to the dust source areas of South America are relevant for increasing the knowledge on past climatic conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. In this sense, the Pampean loess archives can offer explicit records of dust source, transport, and deposition in the region, providing new insights which may be used to better understand the role of dust in future climate change scenarios. In this work, we studied a loess sequence located at the westernmost Pampean Plain. The studied sequence covers a span of time from the late Marine Isotope Stage (MIS 2) period up to the early Holocene. Loess samples from this record have two grain-size populations, indicating more than one dust source area. The dominance of a coarse-silt subpopulation during the transition from the late MIS 2 to the early Holocene suggests that proximal dust sources were dominant at that time. Two of the most proximal dust sources were analyzed as probable contributors to the Lozada site: sediments derived from the Eastern Pampean Ranges and sediments derived from the shorelines of the Mar Chiquita Lake. The geochemical data suggest that neither area was a significant dust source to the eastern Pampean Plain during the studied interval. Instead, our geochemical data suggest a dominant supply from a southern and relatively closer area, linked to the foothills of the Andes, and the increased activation during the early Holocene of a more distant source to the north in the Puna region, which contributed finer loess.

Abstract:
The trahira Hoplias aff. malabaricus is a top predator in pampean shallow lakes and is highly appreciated by recreational anglers and artisanal fishermen. Trahira growth from Yalca shallow lake was determined by lepidological analysis and age validated by marginal increment. When growth was fitted to the von Bertalanffy model, annual classes exhibited a bimodal pattern as a result of the presence of spring and summer annual cohorts associated with a three month spawning season, each period in turn showing different growth patterns. The trahira population-age structure at Yalca shallow lake showed a truncated profile with very low numbers of large adults and few individuals older than three to four years, thus producing an unbalanced length-structure population. Growth parameters and growth performance were similar to the corresponding parameters estimated for other shallow pampean lakes of the region, but strongly diverged from the data for those populations inhabiting subtropical and tropical environments. Such differences could be accounted for by dissimilarity in metabolic rates associated with thermal differences accompanying seasonal variability among latitudes as well as by the development of adaptive physiologic and demographic responses to cope with the high thermal amplitude and hydrologic instability observed in pampean lakes.

Abstract:
In this paper, several lines of evidence (geology, paleoenvironment, lithic and faunal analysis, among others) from the Calera site (Sierras Bayas, pampean region, Argentina) are summarized and discussed. The cultural deposit seems to be a ritual site, formed by the occurrence of several ceremonies during the late Holocene. In the Calera site, four cubetas (pits) were intentionally excavated, between ca. 3400 and 1750 years BP, and filled with a great amount and variety of archaeological materials as well as alochtonous sediments. Among the recovered materials, there were more than 6000 of lithic artefacts, 310 pottery sherds (some of them with antropomorphic motifs), 1760 pieces of mineral pigments, 4 marine molluscs, a shell bead, a granite axe, several instrument made of bone and deer antler, and a phallic statuette. A yet undetermined number (several thousands) of faunal remains were from 16 different mammal species (guanaco, pampean deer, carnivores, mesomammals, micromammals, among others), 6 avian species, 3 fishes and probably reptiles. The exceptional features of the site allow the study of social and ideational aspects of the pampean hunter-gatherers and discussion of the archaeological signatures of the site in terms of non-hierarchical societies.<br>En este trabajo se discuten y resumen las evidencias obtenidas como resultado de estudios multidisciplinarios —geológicos, paleoambientales, líticos, arqueofaunísticos y tafonómicos, entre otros— del sitio Calera, ubicado en las Sierras Bayas, región pampeana, Argentina.

Abstract:
The Pampean flat slab subduction in west-central Argentina (latitude 30-33S) and the steeply dipping Northern Costa Rica subduction zone (latitude 9-11N) show significant along-trench variations in both the subducting and overriding plates. This dissertation contains the results of three seismological studies using broadband instruments conducted in these subduction zones, with the aim of understanding the structure of the lithosphere and the correlation between the variability observed in the downgoing and the overriding plates. In the Costa Rica region, by analyzing teleseismic receiver functions we investigate the variability in the hydration state of the subducting Cocos Plate and the nature of three distinct crustal terranes within the overriding Caribbean Plate: the Nicoya and Chorotega terranes that display an oceanic character, and the Mesquito Terrane, which is more compatible with continental crust. In the Pampean region of Argentina, we apply a regional-scale double-difference tomography algorithm to earthquake data recorded by the SIEMBRA (2007-2009) and ESP (2008-2010) broadband seismic networks to obtain high-resolution images of the South America lithosphere. We find that most of the upper mantle has seismic properties consistent with a depleted lherzolite or harzburgite, with two anomalous regions above the flat slab: a higher Vp/Vs ratio anomaly consistent with up to 10% hydration of mantle peridotite and a localized lower Vp/Vs ratio anomaly consistent with orthopyroxene enrichment. In addition, we study the geometry and brittle deformation of the subducting Nazca Plate by determining high-quality earthquake locations, slab contours, and focal mechanisms. Our results suggest that the subduction of the incoming Juan Fernandez Ridge controls the slab geometry and that ridge buoyancy and slab pull are key factors in the deformation of the slab. The spatial distribution of the slab seismicity suggests variability in the hydration state of the subducting Nazca Plate and/or in strain due to slab bending. These observations support the hypothesis that the along-trench variability in bathymetric features and hydration state of the incoming plate has profound effects in the subducting slab geometry and the upper plate structure in both flat and steeply dipping subduction zones.

Abstract:
In the Pampa neoliberal policies and the rapid development of « firm agriculture » suggest that family-type farmers are threatened due to the many uncertainties about the future. On the contrary the present thesis shows how this unpredictability leads these actors to draw on their experience in order to develop new practices and branch out into new occupations. The point is whether this reflexive capacity can be interpreted as a form of resistance, adaptation or empowerment. This thesis aims to provide a sociological analysis of the life trajectories and bifurcations as experienced and related in life narratives by different producers of the same rural area (Balcarce). The purpose is: 1. to reconstruct professional trajectories illustrating the recent transformations of Pampean agriculture as well as the emerging processes of the new occupational identities which coexist today in the rural areas ; 2. to highlight the strategies or modalities through which actors construct their decisions and actions and 3. to question the relevance of the notion of adaptation as a way to analyse the changes as experienced by the farmers or develop new schemes to support them in their projects

Abstract:
They have been traditionally ignored by researchers and decision-makers. Like their livelihoods, the context in which gaúcho family farming takes place – the Pampa biome – is also experiencing deep transformations. In spite of its rich biodiversity, the grasslands of the Pampas have one of the smallest areas of legally protected land in the world and is subject to environmental passives of difficult reversibility. This lack of interest in the Pampas and its family livestock producers has led to the absence of public policies tailored to that sector and the massive exodus of family farmers to the cities. Thus marginalized, and forced to intensify their production through systems such as feedlots, many of them choose to rent or directly sell their land to multinational soybean or eucalypt companies. We have conducted a thematic analysis of 75 semi-structured interviews to family livestock producers [25 per country]. The semi-structured questionnaires aimed at discovering their livelihoods and adaptation strategies. We use the concepts of adaptation, resilience, vulnerability and the double exposure framework as theoretical tools to explain this complex reality. We conclude that gaucho family livestock production is a positive link between employement, production, sustainability and social contention

Abstract:
<p> The rigors of labor and childbirth are incredibly demanding on the mother's body physically, emotionally, and psychology. Most new mothers deliver in a hospital setting where they are discharged after approximately two days. However, the mother's health and well-being does not improve that drastically within those two days of post-delivery recovery. Common struggles that new mothers face include postpartum depression, intimate partner violence, mood and body changes, as well as nutrition and sleep deprivation. Therefore, it is not only important to be attentive to the newborn but to the mother's recuperation as she adjusts to postnatal life. While there are many options for new mothers to deliver their baby through hospitals or birth centers, there is a lack of postnatal care facilities in comparison. </p><p> Pamper Partum, LLC is a private company with an organizational mission to offer quality service and care that eases the transition to motherhood, to empower a new mother through education and community support, and to reduce any preventable risks associated with the postnatal period. Nas outras solanáceas inoculadas: Solanum gillo (jiló) e Solanum melongena (berinjela), não foram...<br>In the present work, we studied the basidiospore production capacity of telioid teliosori of Puccinia pampeana. We evaluated the spore germination inhibition of three rust causal agents by self-inhibiting substances present in the walls of telioid teliospores, as well as the susceptibility of Capsicum species and other solanaceous plants, such as jiló and eggplant. It was observed that telioid teliosori submitted to temperature shocks (35ºC and 8ºC) for 3 hours and then maintained at 12ºC did not become unviable. The shocks only caused differences in the beginning of basidiospore production. When maintained at 12ºC, with the sori washed daily, they were capable of producing basidiospores for a period of up to 5 months. With regard to spore aqueous extracts (EAE1, EAE2, EAE3, EAE4) prepared with 20 mg of telioid teliospores, they contained quantities of the self-inhibitor that were capable of inhibiting P. pampeana aecidioid teliospores and Coleosporium plumierae and Hemileia vastatrix urediniospores. This inhibiting effect on germination was demonstrated even after 6 hours of contact with the extracts. In inoculation tests, it was observed that not all species within the genus Capsicum are susceptible, since some of them showed a hypersensitivity reaction, such as C. chinense (datil pepper), which, after spermogonia formation (11 days), showed necrotic spots in the peripheral region of the spermogonia at 15 days from inoculation, interrupting the infection. A milder hypersensitivity reaction was also observed in leaves of C. annuum (chili pepper) and C. baccatum (chapéu-de-frade); the stalks of both species showed structures of the fungus. No symptoms or signs of infection were observed in other solanaceous plants inoculated - Solanum gillo (jiló) and Solanum melongena (eggplant) - which demonstrates the specificity of this rust to Capsicum spp.

Abstract:

Castro, Lucio, and Carlos Scartascini. Tax Compliance and Enforcement in the Pampas: Evidence from a Field Experiment. Inter-American Development Bank, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011524.

Abstract:
Tax evasion is a pervasive problem in many countries. In particular, some developing countries do not collect even half of what they would if taxpayers complied with the written letter of the law. The academic literature has not been oblivious to the need to explain why people pay (or do not pay) taxes. However, the empirical literature has not yet reached consensus. This paper reports the results of a large field experiment that tried to affect compliance by influencing property tax taxpayers' beliefs regarding the levels of enforcement, equity, and fairness of the tax system in a municipality in Argentina. Results indicate that the most effective message was one that stated the actual fines and potential legal consequences taxpayers may face in the case of noncompliance (tax compliance increased by more than 4 percentage points). No average effects are found for the treatments designed to affect beliefs about the equity and fairness of the system. However, the evidence also points out that not every taxpayer updates his or her beliefs in the same direction, as relevant heterogeneous effects are found across the population. The evidence in this paper advances the state of knowledge and may help to reconcile some of the different results in the literature.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is growing evidence that individual responses to public policies are, to a large extent, mediated by the way the policies are framed, by people's cognitive and computational capabilities, and by people's subjective beliefs. For example, people may react to price changes but not to complicated schemes that rely on people's computational abilities. Similarly, people may react better to simple information such as a picture than to a very detailed analysis of benefits and costs. Henceforth, even very well-intentioned policies may not have the desired impact if they do not take into account people's capabilities and beliefs. This policy paper draws lessons that should help policymakers design more effective public policies by reviewing the evidence coming from recent field experiments and quasiexperiments sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank.
