Abstract:
A unique isolated hill of Bukit Panau around a flatland deposits comprise of Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary sequence overlying the Triassic granite rock body underneath it. Previous researchers claim that the contact between those two rock units is a nonconformity, but the evidences are insufficient to validate those claims. Therefore, this research studies the type of contact between the rock two rock units and verifies the geological age of the Panau Formation. Several fieldworks were conducted to the study area and petrographic and geochemical studies were performed on selected rock samples retrieved from the fieldwork. As a result, it is believed that Bukit Panau could possibly have two types of unconformities and that the Panau Formation is not the only formation there.

Abstract:
Bukit Panau (Panau Hill) is an isolated hill located in Pasir Mas District, in between Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas town, in the state of Kelantan, Malaysia. It is increasingly popular with tourists, especially those who enjoy trekking. The first discovery of Sauropod in this location was a piece of shocking news for not only Kelantan, but also the whole country. However, there are many arguments regarding the actual existence of this fossil in this area. Bukit Panau is geologically composed of igneous and sedimentary rocks. This paper aims to assess the geoheritage potential of Bukit Panau based on three stages: the qualitative assessment, quantitative assessment and evaluation. The qualitative assessment focused on identifying the geodiversity, geoheritage values, scope, scale and level of significance. The quantitative evaluation was split into two parts: one for possible geotourism sites, and the other just for potential for geoheritage based on calculations and an equation that was provided. SWOT analysis was the final technique, which was evaluation. Based on this study at Bukit Panau, five geoheritage values have been identified: scientific, aesthetic, recreational, cultural, and ecological values. The level of significance for this area is regional and the geoheritage feature scale is small to medium based on our assessment. The quantitative assessment showed that this study area was about right to become a geotourism site and high in terms of geoheritage potential.

Abstract:
Abstract The Oceanic language Matukar Panau has three equivalent morphosyntactic strategies for describing the direction of the event represented by a verb, with a system of ten directional morphemes that can appear in each construction. This variation is explored using a corpus from Matukar Panau and analysed quantitatively with Bayesian regression analyses to assess what factors influence the choice of directional construction. Variables pertaining to the lexical verb and the directional morphemes are found to be the most important factors affecting the variation in the directional system. Sociolinguistic factors are shown to play a less significant role. The findings have implications for the grammaticalization of directional elements, as well as the typology of directional constructions in Oceanic languages.

Abstract:
Abstract Referential kinship terms in Matukar Panau (Oceanic, Papua New Guinea) are obligatorily possessed. Traditionally, kinship terms are directly possessed in Oceanic languages (with an obligatory suffix on the root that agrees with the person and number of the possessor). In Matukar Panau, some kinship terms are also indirectly possessed (with a classifier that agrees with the person and number of the possessor). A third pattern shows double-marking of possessors with directly possessed terms co-occurring with a classifier. I present a multivariate analysis of the predictors that influence the choice of the direct, indirect or double-marked patterns. Older women and younger men are most likely to use the indirect pattern, particularly when discussing their own kin from their households, especially in conversational situations. The indirect possession pattern, then, is used for more integral relationships, what has previously been the semantic domain of direct possession in Oceanic.

Abstract:
Abstract Clause chaining is a form of syntactic dependency holding between a series of clauses, typically expressing temporal or causal relations between events. Prosodic hierarchy theory proposes that syntactic constituents are systematically mapped to prosodic constituents, but most versions of the theory do not account for clause chain syntax. This article presents original data from Matukar Panau, a clause-chaining Oceanic (Austronesian) language of Papua New Guinea. The clause chain is a syntactic constituent in which final-clause TAM scopes over preceding clauses. There are also other types of multi-clausal structures, encompassing subordinate adverbial clauses, and verbless copula clauses, and we analyse all these as instances of the “syntactic sentence.” The syntactic sentence maps to a distinct prosodic domain, marked by the scaling of L% boundary tones, and we equate this domain with the “utterance phrase” posited in some versions of prosodic hierarchy theory. The prosodic characteristics of the Matukar Panau utterance phrase are similar to those found in non-chaining languages, but while other languages use this prosody to mark pragmatically related groups of clauses, in Matukar Panau it most commonly maps to a syntactic sentence.

Gérard, Simon. "Les qualités des taros, la qualité de la vie. : santé, développement, custom et environnement : les articulations multiples du bien vivre et du bien manger dans l’archipel de Palau (Micronésie)." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris, EHESS, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024EHES0164.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the many issues that the inhabitants of the Palau archipelago in Micronesia identify as urgent, food and foodways are central. They are locally seen as causing record-high rates of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension, as well as being characterized as responsible for a “loss of culture” or feelings of food insecurity. Such a context favors the emergence of many ideas regarding what is a “good life” in Palau. Even more than the tubers produced inside of them, Palau’s taro patches, places where the local staple food (Colocasia esculenta, Cyrtosperma merkusii) is grown, are framed as key sites in order to ground practices of “the good life” and as carrying many answers to the pressing issues regarding cultural and social transitions, climate change, economical and especially medical problems.Through the description of taro’s qualification processes, starting in the taro patch and continuing into kitchens, markets and mouths, we wish to shed light on the many ways that food related practices are thought to structure local forms of life, informed by multiple and sometimes conflicting ideas regarding what “eating well” means locally. This dissertation then asks how horticultural technical practices can be regarded as part of a contiguous sequence including cooking practices as well as food incorporation, by focusing on qualities located in bodies as well as foods or environments. This dissertation wishes then to explore how the production processes leading to “good food” are also producing “good lives”. We wish to introduce thoughts about how concrete and material technical acts can also be ways to shape and structure forms of life. This work is influenced by recent developments in the anthropology of technique, notably works that insist on the ontogenetical nature of technical phenomenon, meaning that as much as a technical action produces and transform matter, it also produces people, personhood and relations (Sautchuk 2019, Coupaye 2013, 2018). In many ways this dissertation is part of a recent anthropology of life who is interested in the articulation of lifeforms and forms of life (Pitrou 2017)

Abstract:
A plethora of cross-cultural research studies has been conducted and published on the conflict or collision between western models of education and indigenous knowledge and learning. Following on the visions of these studies, the research reported in this thesis explores how these tensions between differing bodies of knowledge impact youth identity in non-western societies. More specifically, the study examines the case of how western models of education impacts the Palauan traditional educational models and whether or not the privileging of western systems of learning over Palauan systems does in fact have a negative impact on the development of identity, well-being, and empowerment of Palauan youth today. Theoretical approaches in this study derived from the knowledge of Palauan elders and scholars as well as literature works of Freire, who argues for transformative education as a means of empowering people, and Lave and Wenger‟s theory of legitimate peripheral learning. Methodological approaches include narratives and a Palauan dialogic approach using questionnaires, unstructured and semi-structured interviews. Data were collected from June to September 2009 in Palau. Selected participants were the youth of Ulimang village in Ngaraard and a particular group of Palauan elders and scholars that are involved in Palauan education, knowledge, and research. Data were analyzed in two stages: a questionnaire for Ulimang youth and interviews for the Palauan elders. A range of concepts addressed in the analysis, such as cheldecheduch and relationships, strengthened the belief that Palauan knowledge was important in the lives of the Ulimang youth. The need to maintain Palauan knowledge to empower Palauan identities and to support the quality of life for Palauans was articulated by the Palauan elders. The importance of Palauan knowledge and values was stressed from the participants and emphasized how it informs identity development in Palau.

Abstract:
Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is a widespread syndrome of congenital anomalies. The survival rate is low, and most patients die before the first year of life. We present the case of the birth of a full-term baby girl with Patau syndrome. At the initial examination, the patient had classical dysmorphic signs, and a diagnosis was made after a chromosomal analysis.

Cutherell, David, and Wendy Cass. Survival of replanted American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) in Shenandoah National Park. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2301890.

Full text
Abstract:
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a perennial herb of eastern deciduous forests that is harvested for medicinal use. Because of the high market value of its roots, ginseng is threatened in much of its range and is a target for poaching in national parks. In Shenandoah National Park, illegally harvested roots confiscated by law enforcement are replanted in the Park to salvage the roots and reestablish ginseng populations. Ninety-five sites where roots were replanted between 1998 and 2017 were surveyed to determine the plants? survival rate. Population growth was measured as the total number of plants found at each site divided by the number of roots originally replanted. Average population growth across sites was found to be 0.60, or 60% of the number of replanted roots. Ninety-one percent of sites contained at least one plant, and at least 42% contained juvenile plants, indicating that these populations were reproducing. Habitat data collected at each site were analyzed to determine what type of plant communities contained the most successful populations, but the results were inconclusive. Since root condition prior to replanting is likely to be the most important factor in determining survival of replanted roots, basic guidelines were summarized for staff involved in handling ginseng. Twenty-eight 4 x 10 m covert ginseng plots were also resampled 14 years after installation. Plant counts were similar between samples likely indicating consistent poaching pressure.
