Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris, EHESS, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024EHES0164.

Abstract:
Among the many issues that the inhabitants of the Palau archipelago in Micronesia identify as urgent, food and foodways are central. They are locally seen as causing record-high rates of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension, as well as being characterized as responsible for a “loss of culture” or feelings of food insecurity. Such a context favors the emergence of many ideas regarding what is a “good life” in Palau. Even more than the tubers produced inside of them, Palau’s taro patches, places where the local staple food (Colocasia esculenta, Cyrtosperma merkusii) is grown, are framed as key sites in order to ground practices of “the good life” and as carrying many answers to the pressing issues regarding cultural and social transitions, climate change, economical and especially medical problems.Through the description of taro’s qualification processes, starting in the taro patch and continuing into kitchens, markets and mouths, we wish to shed light on the many ways that food related practices are thought to structure local forms of life, informed by multiple and sometimes conflicting ideas regarding what “eating well” means locally. This dissertation then asks how horticultural technical practices can be regarded as part of a contiguous sequence including cooking practices as well as food incorporation, by focusing on qualities located in bodies as well as foods or environments. This dissertation wishes then to explore how the production processes leading to “good food” are also producing “good lives”. We wish to introduce thoughts about how concrete and material technical acts can also be ways to shape and structure forms of life. This work is influenced by recent developments in the anthropology of technique, notably works that insist on the ontogenetical nature of technical phenomenon, meaning that as much as a technical action produces and transform matter, it also produces people, personhood and relations (Sautchuk 2019, Coupaye 2013, 2018). In many ways this dissertation is part of a recent anthropology of life who is interested in the articulation of lifeforms and forms of life (Pitrou 2017)

Abstract:
A plethora of cross-cultural research studies has been conducted and published on the conflict or collision between western models of education and indigenous knowledge and learning. Following on the visions of these studies, the research reported in this thesis explores how these tensions between differing bodies of knowledge impact youth identity in non-western societies. More specifically, the study examines the case of how western models of education impacts the Palauan traditional educational models and whether or not the privileging of western systems of learning over Palauan systems does in fact have a negative impact on the development of identity, well-being, and empowerment of Palauan youth today. Theoretical approaches in this study derived from the knowledge of Palauan elders and scholars as well as literature works of Freire, who argues for transformative education as a means of empowering people, and Lave and Wenger‟s theory of legitimate peripheral learning. Methodological approaches include narratives and a Palauan dialogic approach using questionnaires, unstructured and semi-structured interviews. Data were collected from June to September 2009 in Palau. Selected participants were the youth of Ulimang village in Ngaraard and a particular group of Palauan elders and scholars that are involved in Palauan education, knowledge, and research. Data were analyzed in two stages: a questionnaire for Ulimang youth and interviews for the Palauan elders. A range of concepts addressed in the analysis, such as cheldecheduch and relationships, strengthened the belief that Palauan knowledge was important in the lives of the Ulimang youth. The need to maintain Palauan knowledge to empower Palauan identities and to support the quality of life for Palauans was articulated by the Palauan elders. The importance of Palauan knowledge and values was stressed from the participants and emphasized how it informs identity development in Palau.

Abstract:
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is a botanical species used for thousands of years by traditional Chinese medicine to increase longevity and improve life quality. The medicinal plant (drug) is constituted by the dry roots (whole or in fragments) from 4 to 6 years old plants. At that age, their overall content of ginsenosides (polyhydroxylated tetracyclic triterpenoid saponins) - the main class of bioactive compounds in ginseng - reaches its maximum. Scientific studies seem to indicate that ginseng increases the resilience to disease, fatigue and stress. Other activities reported are antiviral, antiaggregant, antioxidant and cardiotonic. The actions expressed by this medicinal plant originated the creation of a new group of drugs named adaptogens. These drugs can slowly rebalance the human body when stressed or with a diminished resistance due to infections. They can also be used when physical or intellectual vitality is somewhat decreased due to aging. However, the prolonged use of this drug can lead to “ginseng abuse syndrome”, causing identical effects to those observed with the use of corticosteroids including nervousness, insomnia, hypertension, skin eruptions and morning diarrhea. This paper aims to review the available scientific literature regarding the studies already conducted with ginseng, especially ones associated to its ginsenosides and their corresponding biological activities.

Reay, Jonathon. "Neurocognitive and gluco-regulatory effects of Panax ginseng." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2007. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/2834/.

Full text
Abstract:
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has long been used in the Far East to aid in the recovery and prevention of illness. Ginseng, an over-the-counter herbal product in the UK, is amongst these herbal CAMs currently available to the general public. Ginseng is renowned for its rejuvenating properties and its purported ability to aid cognitive function and well-being. Despite the huge global market for ginseng there is little in the way of human research, utilising standardised ginseng extracts and well controlled methodology to support many of these claims. Additionally, ginseng's underlying mechanisms of action are poorly understood. The present thesis documents 5 double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over trials investigating the effects of Panax ginseng, following acute and chronic ingestion, on behaviour, mood and indices of glucose regulation in young healthy volunteers. The results of the five studies making this thesis suggest that both acute and chronic dosing with Panax ginseng is capable of modulating mood and cognitive performance in healthy young volunteers. Chapters 2 and 3 also demonstrate, for the first time, Panax ginseng's ability to modulate blood glucose levels following a single acute dose in overnight fasted healthy volunteers. In chapters 2 and 3, significant reductions in blood glucose levels and concomitant improvements in mental arithmetic (working memory) performance were reported. Chapter 4 revealed for the first time Panax ginseng's positive effects on traditional measures of working memory, thus posing the suggestion that previous failures to report working memory effects (using traditional working memory tasks) may have been due to poor task selection. Chapter 5 revealed an unexpected superimposed relationship between chronic and acute ingestion of Panax ginseng. The pattern of results suggests that following chronic dosing, an acute dose can further modulate cognition and mood (suggestive of a psychological dependence). The final chapter documents a different profile of cognitive and mood effects following a non-standardised Panax ginseng extract, thus highlighting the need for caution when generalising results across ginseng types and beyond the specific parameters of the methodologies utilised in any given study. Methodological differences between studies may go some way in explaining the inconsistent data patterns reported between studies, research groups and ginseng extracts. These data further highlight the need for well-controlled studies utilising standardised ginseng extracts and the need for the integration of 'theory driven' research in order to fractionate any behavioural effect. Such methodologies will inevitably lead to greater consistency between behavioural studies, at least in the first instance within the restricted population of volunteers utilised in the present thesis.

Abstract:
This thesis examines pond aquaculture as a development strategy in the Philippines, with particular reference to its impact on the local environment and the livelihoods of local people.
A theoretical framework is provided by recent literature in development studies and human geography, which attempts to move away from an essentialist and ethnocentric development praxis, and towards a locally-based, participatory process of empowerment. From the perspective of such 'alternative' development ideas, orthodox strategies involving modernization, formalization of economic activities, and resource mobilization, can be reassessed.
The promotion of pond aquaculture--and the widespread mangrove deforestation associated with it--is shown to be a strategy endorsed and supported by national and international development agencies. What is often overlooked, however, is the local ecological and economic importance of mangrove ecosystems. This study examines the effects of mangrove removal and fishpond development on the entitlements of people in three coastal communities in the Philippines. Aquacultural development is shown to have detrimental effects on the integrity of the coastal ecosystem and the livelihoods of certain groups of local residents; a rich common property resource is converted into a privately-owned system of cultivation. While benefits accrue to those with access to the capital necessary for the construction of fishponds, the costs of development are borne largely by mangrove gatherers and artisanal fisherfolk, whose share of a diminishing resource base is steadily declining. For these marginal groups, aquaculture is shown to provide few compensating economic benefits.
The study supports, through concrete local evidence, the criticisms made of orthodox approaches to development, and the need to construct attitudes and strategies which are more attuned to local sustainability and equity.

Abstract:
This thesis has three primary objectives: to deconstruct the genealogical representation of Maori as a physical, unintelligent and savage people, to examine the role that education, and particularly physical education has played in perpetuating these representations by channelling Maori into physical curriculum areas, and to provide a functional kaupapa Maori philosophy of health and physical education. Postmodern theory underpins this theses because it encourages the search for multiple truths. In the colonial context, specifically, it provides an ideal tool by which to deconstruct the supposedly objective and preordained single truths of the colonisers. As I demonstrate, these single truths proved to be politically motivated and false. I also employ a Foucauldian understanding of European history to describe how European bourgeois nationalism and normalisation mutated into biopower, where the normalised Self was able to control, limit, describe and kill the Other. Travellers, missionaries and settlers transposed biopower from Europe to colonial New Zealand. Later, descriptions of the Other - or rather the juxtapositioning of the Self next to depictions of the primitive/anti Other - by anthropologists and historians aided this process. For the benefit of enlightened liberals, colonisation in New Zealand required a specific rhetoric to recast ruthless aspects of the process as mere anomalies on the road to Utopia. The modernist Western world validated colonisation under the guises of humanism and progress: the savage, primitive, pre-philosophical Maori provided the perfect contrast against the civilised, mature, philosophical Self. This genealogical representation formed the basis for Pakeha and Maori relations - and continues to do so. Representations of Maori as intrinsically unintelligent and physical, framed politically motivated educational policy. Initially, racist educational directives channelled Maori into physical vocations to provide labour for untamed rural New Zealand. In the 1960s and 70s, racially biased intelligence test were employed to debiltate Maori students by streaming them into non-academic classes. Later, the so-called empowering rhetoric of the neo-colonial era informed curricula by promoting diluted and sanitised versions of tikanga Maori such as Taha Maori, its physical education offshoot Te Reo Kori, and the current New Zealand Health and Physical Education Curriculum. Promoted under the liberal banner of biculturalism, these initiatives primarily benefited Pakeha and further misrepresented Maori culture as simplistic and irrelevent to contemporary society. Deconstructing grand narratives encourages researchers to construct knowledge outside such totalising truths. Thus, the theoretical approach and historical disseminations outlined above provide the foundations for part two of this thesis, which is a contribution towards Maori knowledge. Employing an interpretivist, indepth interviewing and collaborative narrative epistemology, I constructed korero with kaumatua and pakeke. These focus on health and physical education from a Maori position. Subsequent discussion examines certain aspects of each korero, to form a functional Maori philosophy of physical activity delineated by hauora, a Maori notion of holistic health. The discussion also outlines a number of issues surrounding the incorporation of tikanga Maori into mainstream education.

Orlowski, R. J. "A sedimentological profile of the Pahau Terrane type locality." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geology, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7121.

Full text
Abstract:
The Pahau Terrane as part of the Torlesse Superterrane extends for over 30% of the New Zealand landmass. Although an unofficial type locality around the Pahau River has been proposed, it has never been adequately described or defined. One of the main goals of this research was to describe in detail the deposits of the Pahau River area in order to define the type locality. In total ~900m of section was logged describing four lithofacies; mudstone, interbedded mudstone - sandstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. Two formation names and a group name are proposed and intended for widespread use. The Mt Saul Formation is proposed for coarse-grained conglomeratic lithofacies whereas the Ship Spur Formation is proposed for the combined fine-grained sedimentary lithofacies. The Pahau River Group encompasses these formations. Stratigraphic logs clearly show coarsening and thickening upward, progradational sequences, at the tops of which either highly carbonaceous beds or rootlets can be observed. The bedding in the conglomerate lithofacies are dominated by bedload transport structures including large scale cross stratification, imbrication and clast support. Micro and macrofossil collection suggest a nearshore marine sequence yet rootlets suggest subaerial indicating a range from fully marine to terrestrial depositional environments, making them the only known terrestrial deposits in the Pahau Terrane. This suggests a fan-delta depositional setting. Very few bi-directional structures were observed, suggesting that these deposits were not influenced by wave reworking and tidal currents to any great degree but are fluvially dominated. Thin section analysis of fine to medium sandstones suggests a transitional to mixed arc provenance. Measurable indicators suggest a palaeoflow direction towards the east to northeast. These results are similar to previous studies indicating the suitability of the Pahau River area as a type locality for the Pahau Terrane.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a new way to conceptualize Hermann Max Pechstein’s “primitivism” as a kind of ethnographic “primitivism.” By creating a constellation that connects Pechstein’s Nidden and Palau-based projects, Paul Gauguin’s “primitivist” aesthetic, and the research produced by German ethnographers, I argue that the “documentary” nature of Pechstein’s work paradoxically merges the “scientific” aspects of ethnography with his, and more generally, other Expressionists’ interest in the “primitive.” In addition, the following work demonstrates that the purportedly “scientific” representations and visual accounts of South Seas natives that ethnographers like Otto Finsch produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s heavily and problematically relied on an aestheticization of these foreign people that renders them as decorative, “exotic” objects, which are in many ways subjugated to the gaze of and “on display” for the Westerners examining them. This thesis ultimately focuses on how Pechstein’s representations of people from Palau effectively combine the style typical of most Expressionists and an impulse towards ethnographic depiction not seen in the work of his Brücke colleagues.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the action of a commercial Panax ginseng product on performance, egg quality, biochemical, hematological, immunological and behavioral profile of hens during initial hen s laying cycle 1. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments which consisted in different levels of Panax ginseng (T1 control (without Panax ginseng); T2 1.9; T3 3.8; T4 5.7 and T5 7.6 mg/hen/day) in a total of 70 birds housed in 35 cages with seven replicates per treatment. The basal diets were prepared using corn and soybean meal in agreement with the nutritional values established by the breeder manual. To predict the effect of different levels of Panax ginseng on performance, egg quality, biochemical, hematological, and immunological traits the regression analysis was used. The Dunnett test was used in each Panax ginseng levels to compare to the control treatment. Ethological parameters were evaluated using chi-square analysis. Performance and egg quality were not influenced by dietary treatments, except specific gravity in the first period that was lower in 5.7 mg/hen/day levels and the eggshell weight that was higher in 7.6 mg/hen/day level in comparison with the control treatment in the fourth period. In sensorial analysis, egg yolk color alteration, but not flavor, texture and taste was observed after 30 days of utilization of Panax ginseng. No significant difference was found in hen s hematological profile in all periods evaluated. In metabolic parameters, higher level of phosphorus in hens receiving 7.6 mg/hen/day of Panax ginseng at second and third period and albumin was observed only in the last period when compared to the control group. Cholesterol level was higher in hens receiving 1.9 and 3.8 mg/hen/day of Panax ginseng in comparison with the control treatment. No significant difference among treatments was found in antibody titer after vaccination. In ethological parameters vigilant behavior was more frequent in control group, preening in the group receiving 7.6 mg/hen/day and drinking in the intermediate levels of Panax ginseng (3.8 and 5.6 mg/hen/day). The supplementation with Panax ginseng up to 7.6 mg/hen/day do not change the performance, egg quality, hematological profile and immunological status. Only small variations in the metabolic parameters and behavior frequency of the hens receiving Panax ginseng could be expected.

Abstract:
The pana are a small ethnic group living in central african republic at the border between cameroon and chad. Their number is approximately 30 000 people in c. A. R and about the same number living in cameroon as expatriate. Up to date no reliable work has been published on their account. During the french colonial era, their land was included in a. E. F, first in moyen-congo, then in tchad and oubangui- chari. Between 1911 and 1916 it was under german control. As opposed to the dominant ethnic groups in c. A. R. (gbaya and banda) their language and far-off history are not "oubanguian" ; they must be related to the mboum of cameroon (adamawa area). The purpose of this research is to show how -although involved in the scheme of modern local institutions such as mayors appointed by the government- they have been able to partly retain their traditional model of power. It consisted in a dual chieftaincy with a "belaka" considered as the leader for profane matters and a "gangpana" or sacrifice leader representing the very essence of the group ; the latter being the descendant of the founding clan, he - still nowadays- is the only one allowed to reach the top of the sacred moutain (mont pana) to commmunicate with the ancestors ; thus he is the one transmitting their messages to the living and the one worth conducting rites on their behalf. Up to the fifties, the belaka had to be inthronized on the sacred mountain by the gangpana to be accepted as the pana leader. Because of a colonial history embedded in violence ("kongo wara" rebellion and "caves war" 1928/1933), eventually the belaka was considered as not being worth the sacred rites any more and ceased to be both a religious and a profane leader. However, up to 1993, the mayor of ngaounday (main pana town) always was a descendant of the specific clan to which belakas had been born since the first decades of this century. He did not make any important decision without taking the advice of gangpana and of the elder. The second purpose of this work is to give a comprehensive picture of the history of this group which only tardily entered in contact with the europeans (1906) ; this has been achieved through a very documented work in different colonial archive departments (aix-en-provence, vincennes and potsdam). Other information has been gathered through numerous interviews conducted in ngaounday

Abstract:
Abstract:
The complexities of issues existing in Kenya create a domino effect directly affecting not only the effective management and economic growth of Kenya, but also social and legislative constraints to the lower socioeconomic classes. Land dispossession, proof of ownership to property and nationality are ongoing troubling issues affecting increased orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Kenya, most noticeably within predominantly poverty stricken rural enclaves. This research focuses on the bold move of stakeholders of Trinity United Methodist Church in Naivasha, Kenya partnering with First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Orlando, United States of America. In 2010, they conceptualized Panua Partners in Hope, a transformational ministerial assisted non-profit organization program. These churches recently established support to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Naivasha, Kenya. Decisively apply all their available resources to stem the varying issues these orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) are facing. Whereby, the program is designed to teach self-sufficiency, wealth creation through sustainable income generation and entrepreneurship, and religious relationship development. Continued education is a key component of which Panua mandates. Ongoing (learning) education ensures each child remain in school – (basic, primary and secondary school levels). In addition to ensuring orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are legally aware of their civil, human and property rights. Conversely, these issues being perpetual worldwide challenges, however, the aim of this research is to specifically address its impactive progression on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Thus, outlining their local conditions, the provisions of governmental policies, and assistance, or lack thereof to remedy such current challenges. Additionally, the research will outline reformed constitutional statutes despite being ratified, have not addressed the major issues currently impinging on the freedom and rights of rural communities in Naivasha, Kenya.
B.S.
Bachelors
Legal Studies
Health and Public Affairs

Abstract:
Strategy starts with two basic principles. First, organizations have a goal, a purpose that can be communicated through a vision, which takes life with long term objectives. On another hand, resources (human, economical, technological) are scarce. In this context, strategy is a dynamic process of management that intends to design the right path that a company should embrace to go from its current situation to the desired end state. In the public or non-governmental sector, especially in the arts and culture industry, the businessoriented mindset of strategy can conflict with the artistic sensibility. In this document, we analyze the current situation of an opera house, the Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofia (Les Arts). Les Arts is looking for its own identity in order to position itself in the cultural life of Valencia, with projection in Spain and beyond. In the wake of the internal and external analysis, we suggest a vision for the institution and with long term goals for they will materialize. Then we design the strategies allowing to reach this vision. And finally, we draw a control framework in order to check the correct implementation of the plan. At every stage, we try to take into consideration and comment the specificities of the artistic institution, which reality is – to some extent – way different from other industries.
Tesis

It is considered pathological when it causes suffering to the individual, bringing him damage in terms of injury avoidance behaviors and avoidance important situations in his academic, social and professional life. The pathological manifestations of anxiety are grouped as Anxiety Disorders. Several pharmacological classes are used to treat this group of disorders, especially benzodiazepines and antidepressants. However, the pattern of adverse reactions, the possibility of tolerance and dependence as well as abuse potential of benzodiazepines, added to slow response of antidepressant treatment, justify the search for new therapeutic possibilities. Preclinical studies have attested the anxiety-relieving activity of the roots extract of Panax ginseng C. A Meyer. Its ethnopharmacological use for anxiety is evident worldwide. The aim of this study was to test the therapeutic efficacy of the extract of the roots of P. ginseng in the acute treatment of experimentally induced anxiety in healthy volunteers and identify adverse effects caused by its use. The study population consisted of university students, aged between 18 and 30 years. We selected 60 healthy volunteers who met the study inclusion criteria. We developed a clinical double-blind, randomized, controlled, acute essay. The substances used were: P. ginseng (200 mg), diazepam (10 mg) and placebo. Anxiety was experimentally elicited through Simulation Test of Public Speaking, and evaluated through the use of physiological measures (blood pressure, heart pulse rate, ends temperature and skin electrical conductance) and psychometric scales (trait-state anxiety inventory and analog mood scale). The results were analyzed using several statistical, parametric and nonparametric methods. They showed that the extract of the roots of P. ginseng intensifies anxiety, especially during performance test and has a minor ability to reduce it in the final phase, with greater significance demonstrated through psychological measures. Although well tolerated, P. ginseng has not demonstrated effectiveness in controlling anxiety and subjective signs and symptoms associated with it.
Estudos pré-clínicos atestaram a atividade ansiolítica do extrato das raízes do Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer.

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical-genetic edition of the book Poemes de l’Alquimista, by Josep Palau i Fabre. On one side, it presents, through a wide exercise of textual review, all of the handwritten and typewritten poems that have been found until today (April 22th, 2017) at the personal files of the author, which can be found at the Fundació Palau. The critical places are described in two parts of variants that allow us to trace the genetic evolution of the poems, from the first stages to the last ones that have been found. On the other side, understanding the genesis of the book allows a series of interpretative theories to be developed, and these become an excellent basis for a deeper study of the content of the poems and the book’s structure. The thesis contains some relevant data, as for example the fact that all the poems of Poemes de l’Alquimista were written before 1952, the poetical stages of Palau i Fabre, and the years that marked a turning point in his career as a poet (1938, 1943 and 1947).

Abstract:
Oral history is an important component of Palauan heritage and living culture. Interaction of oral history and archaeology is regarded as a policy when conducting research in Palau, both within the Bureau of Arts and Culture, responsible for protection and preservation of cultural remains in Palau, and among researchers not representing BAC. Legally, a material remain is proven significance if it is connected with intangible resources, such as "lyrics, folklore and traditions associated with Palauan culture". This paper examines and discusses the connection of oral history and archaeology, which will be presented through three case studies: the earthworks on Babeldaob, the traditional stonework village of Edangel in Ngardmau state, and the process of nominating a cultural remain for inclusion in the National Register for Historic Places. The nomination is a good reflection of the interaction between archaeology and oral history, where association with intangible resources is virtually necessary. The two specified types of archaeological remains are compared to one another regarding presence in oral traditions and significance for Palauans. Based on the information obtained from personal experience, interviews and literature, it can be concluded that an archaeological or historical site is valued more by its connection to oral history than to its archaeological qualities, which in turn effects how protection and preservation is administrated, financed, and carried out.

It may be associated with sleep or mood disorders and fatigue, and progresses with functional disability. Its pathogenesis consists of disorders of central pain modulation, involvement of the descending inhibitory system and substance P hyperactivity. The drug most commonly used for treatment of this syndrome is amitriptyline, which leads to an improvement in up to 50% of cases. Patients are interested in trying alternative or complementary medicine for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is an herb that has been used for hundreds of years in oriental medicine. Preclinical studies have confirmed the antinociceptive effect of its active metabolites (ginsenosides) on substance P-induced pain, demonstrating an ability to inhibit calcium channels in dorsal medullary neurons. Clinical trials have shown an improvement in quality of life and fatigue with the use of ginseng. The study had as objective to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the extract of P. ginseng roots in controlling pain, fatigue, sleep quality, anxiety and quality of life in fibromyalgia. Fifty-two women of 21-60 years of age, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study, were selected. A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial was carried out over 12 weeks to compare the effect of P. ginseng (100 mg/day) with amitriptyline (25 mg/day) and placebo. Variables evaluated were pain, fatigue, sleep quality and anxiety using a visual analogue scale (VAS); pain was evaluated using a tender points count and quality of life using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). The patients were evaluated at six follow-up visits and results were expressed as means ± standard error (SE) of the mean using analysis of variation (ANOVA) and Tukey s post-hoc test. Thirty-eight women with a mean age of 43 years concluded the study. There were no statistically significant differences between the three groups with respect to baseline characteristics. VAS revealed a reduction in pain in the ginseng group (p<0.0001) with an improvement ≥ 30% from the sixth week of treatment onwards, an improvement in fatigue (p<0.0001) with a reduction ≥ 25% on the sixth week and ≥ 40% on the ninth week; and an improvement in sleep (p=0.0003) with a reduction ≥ 40% in the frequency of this complaint by the 6th week of treatment. The VAS evaluation of pain, fatigue and sleep detected an improvement compared to baseline values; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups. With respect to anxiety, an improvement occurred in the ginseng group compared to baseline (p<0.0001); however, amitriptyline treatment resulted in a significantly greater improvement (p<0.05). Ginseng reduced the number of tender points and improved patients quality of life, as evaluated by the FIQ, compared to baseline in both cases (p<0.0001); however, no difference was found between the groups. Treatment with ginseng resulted in an improvement in all the parameters evaluated compared to baseline; however, there was no difference between this group of patients and those using placebo and amitriptyline, and this one was more effective than placebo or ginseng in improving anxiety. The beneficial effect on all parameters evaluated suggests that further studies should be performed with larger sample sizes and/or higher doses of ginseng to evaluate this herb for future use as a complementary therapy for fibromyalgia.
O Panax ginseng C.A.

Abstract:
Panax ginseng is a traditional herb that has been used for over 2000 years to promote health and longevity. Active components of ginseng include ginsenosides, polysaccharides, flavonoids, polyacetylenes, peptides, vitamins, phenols and enzymes, of which the ginsenosides are considered to be the major bioactive constituents. Although widely used, the exact mechanisms of ginseng and its compounds remain unclear. In this thesis we use melanophores from Xenopus laevis to investigate the effects of Panax ginseng extract G115 and its constituents on organelle transport and signalling. Due to coordinated bidirectional movement of their pigmented granules (melanosomes), in response to defined chemical signals, melanophores are capable of fast colour changes and provide a great model for the study of intracellular transport. The movement is regulated by alterations in cyclic adenosine 3’:5’-monophosphate (cAMP) concentration, where a high or low level induce anterograde (dispersion) or retrograde (aggregation) transport respectively, resulting in a dark or light cell. Here we demonstrate that Panax ginseng and its constituents ginsenoside Rc and Rd and flavonoid quercetin induce a concentration-dependent anterograde transport of melanosomes. The effect of ginseng is shown to be independent of cAMP changes and protein kinase A activation. Upon incubation of melanophores with a combination of Rc or Rd and quercetin, a synergistic increase in anterograde movement was seen, indicating cooperation between the ginsenoside and flavonoid parts of ginseng. Protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor Myristoylated EGF-R Fragment 651-658 decreased the anterograde movement stimulated by ginseng and ginsenoside Rc and Rd. Moreover, ginseng, but not ginsenosides or quercetin, stimulated an activation of 44/42-mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), previously shown to be involved in both aggregation and dispersion of melanosomes. PKC-inhibition did not affect the MAPK-activation, suggesting a role for PKC in the ginseng- and ginsenoside-induced dispersion but not as an upstream activator of MAPK.
