Abstract Objectives. The aim of our study is to identify a surgical technical that has the lowest rate of pancreatic fistulas in pancreatico-gastric anastomosis following duodenopancreatectomies. We studied pancreatico-gastric anastomosis performed with stitches compared to the ones performed without stitches. Methods. Our experimental model is based on ten piglets, which were divided into 2 groups. In the first group (n=5) the pancreatico-gastric anastomosis was done using double purse-string threads one passed through the gastric seromuscular layer and one through the gastric mucosa. In the

Although infected pancreatic necrosis can develop as a result of rare conditions involving trauma, surgery, and systemic infection with an uncommon pathogen, it usually occurs as a complication of pancreatitis. Early phase of acute pancreatitis can be either edematous interstitial pancreatitis or necrotizing pancreatitis. The late complications of pancreatitis can be divided into pancreatic pseudocyst due to edematous interstitial pancreatitis or walled-off necrosis due to necrotizing pancreatitis. During any time course of pancreatitis, bacteremia can provoke infection inside or outside the p

Abstract:
Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis was used to characterise a number of Scottish IPNV isolates. The majority of isolates from Scotland were genetically closely related to the Sp strain of IPNV. There appears to be a link between the IPN status of a farm and the presence of IPNV in the environment but this is short lived as IPNV does not typically persist in natural reservoirs at sufficiently high levels to allow re-infection to occur. Real-time PCR was used to study the expression of a subset of immune relevant genes following IPNV challenges by a natural (co-habitation) and unnatural (i.p.)

Abstract:
The persistence of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in Atlantic salmon was examined with particular emphasis on the association of IPNV with leucocytes. Atlantic salmon were infected with IPNV via the water and via the feed. Despite relatively low mortalities, a high prevalence of IPNV was demonstrated particularly when the virus was introduced via the water. No virus-specific pathology or reduction in the growth performance of infected populations was evident. The conditions for the stimulation of Atlantic salmon leucocytes with the mitogen, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) were optimised

A rainbow trout (Slamo gairdneri Richardson) population of IPN virus carriers was studied over a one-year period using both homogenisatian and co-cultivation for virus isolation. The percentage of virus-yielding fish was high between March and June but then declined. This was diametrically opposite to the trend in the serum antibody levels indicating that the marked humoral immune response resulted in a very significant reduction in the virus titres. The highest isolation rate was obtained from the kidneys after co-cultivation (from seventeen of the twenty-three virus-positive fish) underlinin

Activating mutations of the kras proto-oncogene are found in more than 90% of human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and can result in increased activity of the NF-κB pathway, leading to constitutive production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α. Pancreatic cancer progression occurs through a series of pre-invasive lesions, pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanIN lesions), which progress into invasive carcinoma. The aim of this thesis is to understand the autocrine role of TNF-α produced by premalignant epithelial cells in pancreatic tumour progression. This cytokine has al

Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN), due to infection with the IPN virus (IPNv), continues to cause heavy mortalities and is endemic across the major Atlantic salmon farming regions of the world. Prevalances of 0.3-0.8 or more at the freshwater stage and 0.05 to 0.3 in the seawater phase of production are typical. Partially effective injectable vaccines are available against seawater IPN but biosecurity measures remain the main methods of control.
