Abstract:
Annual influenza A infections affect 5-15% of the population, causing an estimate half million deaths per year worldwide, with the majority of the severe diseases in infants, elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Influenza viruses infect the epithelium of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, typically resulting in an abrupt onset of illness, that usually includes fever, myalgias, upper respiratory tract congestion and pharyngytis. These symptoms persist for approximately one week; pneumonia is a frequent manifestation of more severe infection, while myocarditis, encephalitis and other

Macrophages have well-established roles in the primary response to pathogens and hold essential functions during innate and adaptive immunity. Under activation by different growth factors and cytokines, human monocytes have been shown to differentiate and polarize into two main types of macrophage, classically-activated macrophages (caMφ) and alternatively-activated macrophages (aaMφ), displaying distinct properties and phenotypes. For instance, caMφ secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines, whereas aaM secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, aaMφ displays stronger phagocytic ability an

On 24 January 1919, a thirty-two-year-old nurse from Sydney, Jean Williamson, disembarked at the railway station at Oodnadatta in the far north of South Australia to commence her new role as sister in charge of the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) hostel. On 18 April that year, Williamson greeted thirty-four-year-old minister from Melbourne, Coledge Harland, who had arrived by train to take up a three-year post as padre for the AIM’s central Australian parish. Just over a month later, an influenza pandemic that had already killed untold numbers of people worldwide reached the isolated township.

Abstract:
For centuries, pandemic influenza has emerged at irregular and unpredictable intervals to cause widespread illness, hospitalization and death. Uncertainty surrounding the timing and severity of future influenza pandemics present challenges for preparedness and response efforts. The objective of this dissertation is to advance pandemic influenza knowledge and preparedness, through a series of interrelated articles that address the follow research questions: 1. What are the likely consequences of a pandemic flu event in Canada? 2. What do mathematical models tell us about preparing for such an

Thesis advisor: Paul Gray<br>As birds throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa have been infected with an avian influenza, public health experts everywhere are worried that if spread to humans, the world could face a pandemic with proportions similar to the 1918 Spanish influenza. In the past, the federal government has been more concerned with foreign militaries than foreign diseases. But today, the government has devoted over $7.1 billion to preventing a potential pandemic. While much of this goes to research and the production of vaccinations, money is also allocated to strengthen local infrastr
