Abstract:
This diploma thesis presents a project documentation for construction of a zoo pavilion with a restaurant. The structure has to be designed in compliance with regulations for buildings with almost zero energy consumption. Its construction site is located within the existing compound of Prague’s zoo on plot no. 1491/1. The pavilion is proposed to house giant pandas. The building has three floors- one underground and two above. It is covered by a flat green roof. In terms of circulation, the structure is composed from two parts. The first one is formed by premises for the pandas, including necessary facilities for their wellbeing and their breeding; and the second part is visitors’ part, including restaurant, gift shop and amenities. The building is enclosed by two exterior expositions for pandas which are connected with the interior exposition premises by two ramps- tunnels. There is a roof terrace adjacent to the restaurant for visitors to enjoy the view of pandas in their exterior grounds. The vertical structure of the pavilion for giant pandas is a combination of load bearing brick walls and cast-in-place concrete walls- the underground floor and the ground floor is formed by the cast-in-place concrete walls and the upper floor is formed by the brick walls made out of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks. The horizontal structures are formed by prestressed concreted floor panels or in the case of the upper floor by cast-in-place reinforced concrete slabs.

Abstract:
This thesis is based and developed on the ambiguous and open conception, iconic species, which reveals the relationship between human society and non-human species that goes be- yond its biological status. From the case of the giant panda, I attempt to deconstruct the shap- ing process of an iconic species from multiple perspectives, which includes how a specific cultural context, or a specific historical period contributes to the shaping process and how the government and the public diverge or even clash around the shaping process. Then, I introduce my fieldwork where I through observing both giant pandas and red pandas in the exhibition centres called panda bases to analyse the encountering an iconic species in reality and their different influences on public awareness of the wildlife conservation. I also attempt to explore the various representative forms of an iconic species such as the Tibetan antelope ranging from the mascot to the film and follow the changes of its symbolic meanings in different forms. In conclusion, the thesis is aimed to reflect the hybrid features of the iconic species and pro- vide in-depth interpretation of the endless interactions between the human beings and other species.

Abstract:
Panda Cloud Systems Management (PCSM) is a cloud-based system for monitoring, inventorying and managing computers, servers and networks. Stjarna Fyrkant started its IT-department in August 2014 where they manage for Stjarna Fyrkants computers and networks but also other companies as IT consultants. They have chosen to use PCSM to manage and to monitor these networks.   The project was started because Stjarna Fyrkant wants a better insight of the system as they have gone through with the basics of it. They have chosen four areas where they wants to know more about and these are monitoring of computers and servers, SNMP for monitoring other equipment, automated processes such as updating programs and Windows automatically and for Mobile Management (MDM) to manage and monitor iPhones.   To make this happen I was given login information to PCSM, two computers and an iPhone to test PCSM and its other functionalities for what Stjarna Fyrkant want to accomplish. For monitors the report will go through about which monitor that exists in the store and in PCSM and later assign these to two groups for monitoring the servers and clients. Then how to monitor other devices via SNMP and how this was applied to the devices that Stjarna Fyrkant has, such as printers. However, this didn’t work for all devices.   For maintenance of computers the report analyzes how to keep important updates for programs like Java and .NET but also for Windows. Additionally it was looked into how to remove unnecessary files found on the computers, such as the temporary files.   For MDM the report looks in to which functionalities that exists and these were later tested for an iPhone. These functions worked surprisingly fast when it took only a few seconds for them to apply. There were plans to create a product sheet for companies of these features, but this was handed to someone else with more knowledge for design such towards companies.

Abstract:
The PANDA Experiment will be one of the future experiments at the Facility for Antiproton and ion Research (FAIR), at Darmstadt, Germany. In the experiment, a stream of frozen hydrogen pellets will traverse vertically an antiproton beam circulating in the accelerator. Collisions of antiproton projectiles with frozen hydrogen pellets will lead to the generation of new particles, which in turn will be measured in the PANDA detector  facility. The aim of this thesis is to develop a readout firmware for an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter)  prototype, which will be used in the PANDA detector  to gather all the necessary information from the antiproton-proton collisions. The firmware takes out interesting parameters of the pulse produced by the collision like amplitude, integral, pedestal or arrival time. The work will include algorithms for pulse recognition, data buffering, data formatting and readout using a Gigabit Transceiver (GTP). Big efforts have been put to achieve a very efficient utilization of the resources and to minimize the latency.

Abstract:
The multi-purpose detector PANDA (antiProton Annihilation at Darmstadt) will be built at the antiproton storage ring of the FAIR accelerator complex that is under construction in Darmstadt and is expected to provide its first beam in 2019. The fixed target experiment PANDA is a state of the art hadronic physics detector. With PANDA, one can explore a wide range of topics including meson spectroscopy, search for new states of matter such as glue balls and hybrids, charmed and multi-strange baryon spectroscopy, hyper-nuclei, and properties of hadrons in nuclei. Proton antiproton annihilation reactions will also allow to study the structure of nucleons, in particular by exploiting the electromagnetic channel of electron-positron pair production which is the subject of this thesis. One major problem with studies of electromagnetic channels is the hadronic background with cross-sections at least six orders of magnitude larger than the signal, requiring excellent particle identification and good momentum resolution. However the momentum reconstruction for electrons and positrons is degraded due to the emission of Bremsstrahlung photons along their path. In the first part of this thesis, I studied this problem and developed a method based on the correction of the momentum of electrons and positrons event by event, using Bremsstrahlung photons detected in the electromagnetic calorimeter. This method, which has been integrated into PANDAroot, the official PANDA reconstruction code, provides a significant improvement of momentum resolution for electrons, and will be exploitable by any measurement with electron-positron pair in the exit channel. In the second part, I performed a feasibility study of measuring the reaction antiproton p →J/Ψ π⁰ using predictions from a model based on pion-nucleon TDAs (Transition Distribution Amplitudes). TDAs are non-perturbative objects that describe the transition between two particles of different nature. For example, pion-nucleon TDAs contain information about the pionic components in the nucleon's wave function. For this study, I relied on the TDA model to create an event generator, and studied the capability to reject hadronic background. The improvement of the efficiency for the signal due to the Bremsstrahlung correction method was quantified. This study can be used as basis for a proposal of an experiment with PANDA

Abstract:
Moisture damage is one of the major causes of deterioration of pavements. An example is the damage caused by flooding. While the effects of pore water pressure in pavement have been studied using finite element modeling, few of the models consider a realistic moving tire and the viscoelastic behavior of the asphalt layer. Consequently, a three-dimensional finite element simulation based on Biot consolidation theory and Schapery's non-linear viscoelasticity model, was developed to accurately simulate and analyze the detrimental effects of saturated layers in asphalt pavements. In addition, a parametric study is conducted to analyze the response of pavements with varying surface and base thickness, base and subgrade permeability, and vehicle speeds under different level of saturation. The results indicate that the effects of pore water pressure be considered in the design of pavements in flood-prone areas and in the proposal of flood management plans. Ultimately, the implementation of a "flood resilient" asphalt pavement could be effective in reducing the cost of road restoration and repair in flood-prone areas.

Abstract:
The well-known symbol for conservation, the giant panda bear, and the original red panda have been forced into remote habitats due to anthropogenic disturbance, making ecological study difficult. Therefore the first known species distribution model was created to predict the most likely areas of occurrence within the known range of these elusive animals. These models were then projected onto North America and evaluated against existing breeding programs. Additionally, the close proximity of the Gray Fossil Site and the discovery of the most complete fossil red panda specimens in the world allowed ecomorphological comparisons between the modern red panda, Ailurus fulgens and the fossil red panda, Pristinailurus bristoli. Spatial data and morphometric results from this study will aid conservation work and breeding programs globally.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at examining the presence of the concept of discretion in three chapters of Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Such chapters belong to the second part of mentioned book and they refer to the pieces of advice given by dom Quixote to Sancho Pança, before his faithful squire assumed the government of Barataria island. The concept of discretion is quite vast and complex. It includes moral and social attitudes wich provide for the individual\'s proper social behavior within the universe where he lives. In order to be put into practice, the exercise of discretion demands the knowledge of some elements that function as a kind of pré-requirements, such as prudence, discernment, education and erudition. Treatises on social behavior in the 16th and 17th centuries contribute to the understanding of the concept of discretion, and we are making specific comments on them in search, as far as posible, of their connections with Cervantes\'s Quixote. Along this study we are also examining the specific way Cervantes deals with the concept of discretion in his narrative. There are instances in which the writer subverts the rules of literary decorum causing a rupture in the rigidity of the concept by using it in such a way that demonstrates variety in its application.

Abstract:

It is rare that Americans wonder about what happened to the Panama Canal after the United States turned it over to Panama in 1999. Since 2000, the Panamanians have been able to transform the canal into a profitable enterprise and successfully revert a good deal of Canal Zone infrastructure to public use through a combination of positive political decision-making, fiscally beneficial economic policies, and constructive management. The United States created the nation of Panama, built and managed the canal, and finally begrudgingly handed over sovereignty. To this extent, Panama's success is our success. Yet there has been surprising little real analysis of the changes in Panama that have resulted from a decade of ownership of the canal and the land surrounding it. It is time to appraise the results so far.

Abstract:
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is an endangered species and many efforts are being made to ensure its survival, including numerous research studies. However, there has been little investigation of spatial memory in the giant panda. Spatial memory is an important mechanism for survival in the wild, allowing an animal to find and remember the location of food, mates, den sites and avoid predators. Memory assessment in non-human species typically involves the use of recognition, as opposed to recall tasks. The current study tested spatial memory recall in 1.1 giant pandas using a delayed response memory task. The design required a delayed response to a previously lighted location, with varying lengths of delay between the observation phase and the test phase. The male subject reached criterion at 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 10-second delays. The female subject reached criterion at 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 10-, and 15-second delays. The results support the hypothesis that giant pandas have working memory recall ability for spatial location.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the possibility of using aposematic insects as guides to plants that contain pharmacologically-active compounds. Plants were monitored within national parks in the Republic of Panama over a period of six months and all insects feeding on them were collected and raised in captivity. The insects were then extracted and analyzed to determine how they were treating toxic chemical compounds in their host plant. Two principal plants were investigated with their associated insects: (1) Vismia baccifera and (2) Mikania guaco. One generalist and one specialist Lepidopteran species were found to sequester vismione B from their host plant Vismia baccifera, a cytotoxic compound active against three cancer cell lines. Two specialist Coleopterans were found to sequester the novel compound Guacanone, isolated by the primary author from the vine Mikania guaco and active against Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. A generalist Coleopteran was found to not sequester this compound. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Reforestation is being considered as a mitigation option to help combat the climate change predicted to result from atmospheric carbon dioxide pollution. Forestry-based carbon storage projects are being introduced in many tropical countries, and assessment of species-specific carbon storage potentials is made difficult by a lack of species-level information. This study focuses on teak (Tectona grandis), to measure many of the characteristics affecting the carbon storage potential both of the trees themselves and of the plantations they are in. Root-to-shoot ratio, above- and belowground biomass, as well as tissue carbon content were measured in 20-year-old teak trees in Panamanian plantations. A regression relating diameter at breast height (DBH) to total tree carbon storage for trees of various sizes was developed. To scale up to the plantation level, this regression was used to estimate the carbon storage of the trees of four plantations. Litter, undergrowth, and soil were studied to estimate carbon storage in these compartments. These estimates were collated to form a global estimate of carbon storage in Panamanian harvest age teak plantations. Various methods of calculation of carbon storage in short-rotation plantations are discussed. This work will allow greater precision in the assessment of carbon storage in individual plantations.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the controversial Panama Canal expansion proposals using an analytical framework developed by Herman Daly, an ecological economist at the University of Maryland and a critic of traditional models economic development. At a time when nearly every nation seeks to increase the size of its economy, Daly has been an ardent advocate of setting limits to economic growth, arguing that, as the earth is materially closed, there cannot be infinite growth of the consumption of material and energy resources within a finite (nongrowing) biosphere. These limits should be defined by the regenerative and waste absorptive capacities of the biosphere. My objective here is to test the feasibility of implementing a policy at the local resource management level that is guided by the recognition of ecological limits to economic growth. I employ a water management technique developed by The Nature Conservancy called the Range of Variability Approach (RVA) and test its utility in setting an ecologically-based limit to water withdrawal and river system modification in the Panama Canal watershed. Abstract:
Our objective was to identify the major barriers to natural regeneration of tree species in abandoned Panamanian pastures as a first step in formulating management strategies to facilitate forest recovery. We tested whether fire, seed dispersal, and the presence of an introduced grass, Saccharum spontaneum L., were barriers to forest regeneration. We examined growth, survival, and density of both experimentally-introduced and naturally-regenerating tree seedlings using a series of multifactorial experiments.
We found that seed dispersal limits forest regeneration. Large-seeded species have the highest performance in the Saccharum spontaneum, but were found in the lowest abundance in natural conditions. Small-seeded species were most frequently observed, but they have the lowest survival. We conclude that dispersal limitations preclude entry of the larger-seeded species. Distance from the forest limits dispersal of many small-seeded species. Fire is a major barrier to natural regeneration because it lowers species diversity.

Full text
Abstract:
Pandora moth (Coloradia pandora Blake) is a phytophagous insect, defoliating ponderosa pine trees in the western United States. However, long-term studies of this insect and its effects on the forest ecosystem have not been conducted. Using dendrochronological techniques, I examined past timing and intensity of defoliation through its effects on radial growth of trees in the forests of south central Oregon. Pandora moth leaves a distinctive ring-width "signature" that was easily identifiable in the wood. The growth for the first year of the signature was half the normal ring-width with narrow latewood. The following two years produced extremely narrow rings, with the entire suppression lasting from 4 to 18 years. Twenty-two individual outbreaks were reconstructed from this 620 year chronology. I found that pandora moth outbreaks were episodic on individual sites, with a return interval of 9 to 156 years. Conversely, on the regional scale of south central Oregon, outbreaks demonstrated a 37-year periodicity. On average, pandora moth defoliation caused a 29% mean periodic growth reduction in defoliated ponderosa pine trees. Spread maps of the first year that sites demonstrated suppression were plotted revealing an apparent annual spread of the outbreaks. Examination of a fire history on one pandora moth outbreak site suggested that pandora moth outbreaks delay fire by interrupting the needle fall needed for fire spread. Superposed epoch analysis showed that the year that the outbreak was first recorded was significantly dry and the fourth year prior was significantly wet. Therefore, climate may be a triggering factor in pandora moth outbreaks. The stem analysis demonstrated that the percent volume reduction was greatest at the base of the tree and declined further up the bole. The percent volume reduction in the canopy of the trees was variable with outlying high and low values. The mean volume reduction per outbreak was .053 m³ per tree. Although this insect is considered a forest pest and causes inconvenience for people living nearby, pandora moth is not as widespread and damaging as some other phytophagous insects. However, its very distinctive ring-width signature and the length of the ponderosa pine record enables reconstruction of very long outbreak histories, which may deepen our understanding of the interaction between defoliating insects and their ecosystem.

Archibold, T. E. M. "Panama Viejo : an analysis of the construction of archaeological time in eastern Panama." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446464/.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate how different methods for ceramic classification can produce different chronologies, ultimately creating different historical interpretations or histories. To this end the most widespread methods for building chronology in the Americas, the "taxonomical" and the "modal" methods shall be compared using the recently excavated ceramic sample from Precolumbian Panama Viejo, one of the largest archaeological sites in Panama. It is also intended to review different conceptions of history and time because they are the theoretical background from which chronologies are built and thus have a direct impact on these archaeological histories. The site of Panama Viejo and the Eastern Region of Panama, where it is located lack a Precolumbian ceramic sequence. Building a chronology for Panama Viejo affords a good opportunity to address the problem of both the local and the regional chronologies, and also to compare both methods in every step of the chronology building process, underlining the assumptions and consequences, and the strengths and weaknesses of each method. Ultimately, it is hoped this thesis could show that both methods can be used complementarily to solve different problems, fostering a more comprehensive synchronic characterisation and a finer chronological division of ceramic assemblages. The two classifications revealed a homogeneous ceramic assemblage where continuity rather than change is the norm. It also yielded two chronologies for the site, one taxonomical with one cultural phase, and one modal with two cultural phases. These in turn gave rise to different historical accounts about the kind of behaviour that produced the pottery deposit in Panama Viejo, accounts where the difference is mostly of chronological resolution. The new ceramic data coupled with that from burial contexts helped rewrite the history of Panama Viejo, emphasising the longevity of occupation at the site by a possibly stable socio-cultural group from the mid-first millennium AD until the European Conquest.

Abstract:
The prospects of studying multi-strange and charmed antihyperon-hyperon physics and CP violation in hyperon decays in the upcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR, Germany, have been studied in this thesis. The angular dependence on polarisation parameters in the decay of the spin 3/2 Omega hyperon was calculated using the density matrix formalism. Expressions for the angular distributions in the Ω -> ΛK and the subsequent Λ -> pπ decays were derived. Simulations were performed for the pbar p -> Ξ+ Ξ-, pbar p -> Ω+Ω- and pbar p -> Λc-Λc+ reactions. Special attention was given to the reconstruction of spin variables. It is shown that PANDA will register tens of events per second for the pbar p -> Ξ+Ξ- reaction. This should be compared to the previously existing data of a handfull of events. For the other two reactions the event rates will be lower, but still reasonably high. This will be the first measurements of these reactions. It is shown that spin variables can be reconstructed in all three reactions for all production angles of the hyperons. Simulations concerning the possibility to measure CP violation parameters in hyperon decays were also made for the reactions pbar p- > Λbar Λ and pbar p -> Ξ+Ξ-. It was found that false signals from detector asymmetries disappears if no particle identification criterium is used and the analysis is restricted to events were the hyperon decays occur close to the beam axis. The effect of the magnetic field in the PANDA detector on the measurement of hyperon spin variables was investigated for the case of pbar p -> Λbar Λ. The effect was observed to be small for polarisation and negligible for spin correlations.

Abstract:
As the Army is preparing to strengthen the intervention capacity by equipping the Intervention Brigade Batallions with armoured vehicles with Pandur II 8x8 wheels, how far are the Regiments prepared to obtain and maintain this new capacity? It is based on this transformation that the author has done the present scientific work. Its aim is to find out how far the adoption of the intervention capacity by the first Infantry Batallion of the Intervention Brigade will affect the Infantry Regiment number 13 where the same is located. For this investigation he has used as reference other Units equipped with another sort of armoured vehicles, which have better prepared infrastructures for the use of the same. He has observed the structures, the routines and habits and has taken them as reference for this scientific work. The analysis the author has done was based on the observation, the analysis of documents done by the Army competent entities (responsible for projects, construction of infrastructures and maintenance of the Pandur II) and interviews. The Unit which has been analysed was created and built to lodge a group with a different structure, a different mission and different equipments than those it has nowadays. Therefore it needs changes and new infrastructures which are essential for the maintenance and conservation of the new equipments. In this scientific work the author has identified the main omissions and the changes that must be done in the Infantry Regiment number 13, a Unit which has conditions and soldiers capable of fulfilling their mission in a new reality, honouring the Portuguese Army.

Abstract:
Panama has a warm, wet, tropical climate. Unlike countries that are farther from the equator, Panama does not experience seasons marked by changes in temperature. Instead, Panama's seasons are divided into Wet and Dry. The Dry Season generally begins around mid-December, but this may vary by as much 3 to 4 weeks. Around this time, strong northeasterly winds known as "trade winds" begin to blow and little or no rain may fall for many weeks in a row. Daytime air temperatures increase slightly to around 30-31 Celsius (86-88 Fahrenheit), but nighttime temperatures remain around 22-23 Celsius (72-73 Fahrenheit). Relative humidity drops throughout the season, reaching average values as low as 70 percent. The Wet Season usually begins around May 1, but again this may vary by 1 or 2 weeks. May is often one of the wettest months, especially in the Panama Canal area, so the transition from the very dry conditions at the end of the Dry Season to the beginning of Wet Season can be very dramatic. With the arrival of the rain, temperatures cool down a little during the day and the trade winds disappear. Relative humidity rises quickly and may hover around 90 to 100% throughout the Wet Season. Drought forecasts can be an effective tool for mitigating some of the more adverse consequences of drought. The presented thesis compares forecast of drought indices based on seven different models of artificial neural networks model. The analyzed drought indices are SPI and SPEI-ANN Drought forecast, and was derived for the period of 1985-2014 on Panama Canal basin; I've selected seven of sixty-one Hydro-meteorological networks, existing in the Panama Canal basin. The rainfall is 1784 mm per year. The meteorological data were obtained from the PANAMA CANAL AUTHORITY, Section of Water Resources, and Panama Canal Authority, Panama. The performance of all the models was compared using ME, MAE, RMSE, NS, and PI. The results of drought indices forecast, explained by the values of seven model performance indices, show, that in Panama Canal has problem with the drought. Even though The Panama is generally seen as a wet country, droughts can cause severe problems. Significant drought conditions are observed in the index based on precipitation and potential evaporation found in this thesis; The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), were used to quantify drought in the Panama Canal basin, Panama Canal, at multiple time scales within the period 1985-2014. The results indicate that drought indices based on different variables show the same major drought events. Drought indices based on precipitation and potential evaporation are more variable in time while drought indices based on discharge. Spatial distribution of meteorological drought is uniform over Panama Canal.

Abstract:

The PANDA experiment is a part of the future FAIR accelerator facility and will study the strong interaction by detecting the reaction products from antiproton-proton annihilations in a near full solid-angle configuration. One option for the internal proton target in PANDA is frozen micro-spheres of hydrogen, so-called pellets.

Such a pellet target is interesting because of the unique characteristics it offers; the high target thickness, the small interaction volume, the minimal gas load on the vacuum system, and the possibility of tracking individual pellets. Nevertheless, it is possible to allocate the bulky equipment needed to produce the pellets at a few meters away from the beam. This way particle detectors can be located close and almost fully around the interaction point.

This thesis is devoted to the optimization of a pellet target. To perform measurements, a Pellet-Test Station was built at The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. For the first time, experimental results show the pellet distribution in space and time, and in addition, the vacuum along the pellet pipes. Furthermore, dedicated measurements carried out at CELSIUS/WASA demonstrate the existence of pellet heating as a result of beam-target interactions.

In performing calculations, the potential problems with pellet heating at PANDA are outlined. Moreover, to look at the consequences for the desired physics, a reaction involving short-lived D-mesons has been used to show the advantages of pellets compared to a more spacious target.

In conclusion, these studies lead to a deeper understanding of the pellet properties, which makes it possible to suggest future improvements, such as cooling with no vibrations.

Abstract:
We have performed calculations in order to evaluate the vacuum conditions for the twohadron physics experiments WASA and PANDA. WASA is an ongoing experiment whereasPANDA is an experiment under construction. There is an interest in improving the vacuumconditions for these experiments in order to reduce background interactions. The experimentswere modelled as longitudinal conductance limited vacuum systems in the molecular flowregime and the calculations were performed with VAKLOOP. The approach was to fit amodel of WASA to measurement data and then extend this model to PANDA in order tomake predictions. The model of WASA was successful in the sense that it reproduced themeasurement data within the measurement uncertainty. The model of PANDA showed somediscrepancies in comparison with calculations from the Target Technical Design Report ofPANDA, but an overall similar pressure profile is obtained. Finally, we have considered a wayof improving the conditions at PANDA by including extra pumping capacity in the system, concluding that lowering the pressure at the interaction point for PANDA is challenging. Anoutlook for further modelling is to make a more detailed comparison between our model andthe one from the Target Technical Design Report.

Abstract:
Search engine algorithms are constantly improved in order to provide the highest quality and most relevant results for the user. Google algorithm updates called Panda and Penguin have recently been one of the most significant and many websites that use black hat SEO techniques were hit by them. Nowadays, using this search optimization's techniques raises the risk of Google penalty, which in most of the cases cause decrease in traffic from organic search. The aim of this thesis is to describe techniques of search engine optimization (SEO) and their possible impact on website's ranking. The thesis also aims to verify whether Penguin and Panda updates have the impact on websites for which the methods of black hat SEO have been used and specify the result of this impact. In the theoretical part of this thesis it is described function of search engines Seznam.cz and Google, their algorithm change in history and possible factors on which the ranking score is based. Briefly are also described tools, which can be used to identify and analyze possible causes of penalization. After reading this thesis, the reader will have a basic orientation in search engine optimization methods and their appropriate use. Also, he will be able to recognize possible causes of Google penalty and propose an appropriate strategy for its removal.

Abstract:
The 'Arco Seco' or 'Dry Arc' region of the Republic of Panama is considered to be the driest in the country, where many areas of this region experience severe water stress during the months of January through May. This study was conducted to develop a tool for the assessment of sustainable implementation of water harvesting through ponds for agricultural purposes in the region. A computer based Decision Support System (DSS) has been developed specifically for the Arco Seco region in order to facilitate pond storage capacity estimation. As part of the DSS, four computer programs have been designed for four different case scenarios; the first one is for sites that have high water demand and no topographical restrictions for pond size; the second is for fairly high water demand, no topographical restrictions for pond size, and for farmers who wish to have a backup of water to use mostly during drier years; the third is for low water demand, usage during the dry season only, and topographical restrictions for pond size, and finally the fourth is for constant water demand throughout the year, and for sites where runoff is the only water source.*

Abstract:
This study attempts to expand existing knowledge on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, by studying a four year old tropical tree plantation. The growth of trees coming from monocultures, three species mixtures and six species mixtures was compared. Through multivariate statistical analysis, the variation in tree productivity was partitioned into different components: variation explained by (1) species richness, (2) species identity and (3) the environment. Results reveal that the environment explains the largest portion of variability in tree growth. Moreover, of the small amount of variation explained by diversity, species identity is found to be twice as important then species richness. Of notable significance was the amount of variation explained by the interaction of diversity with the environment.

Abstract:
In front of the White House press corps, George H. W. Bush stood with Panamanian President Guillermo Endara and proclaimed “democracy has been restored,” the “peace is now preserved,” and “we must see that prosperity returns to the people of Panama.” True, democracy had been restored, but at a great price to the Panamanians and without a plan for recovery. The struggle to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega began with Ronald Reagan and ended in the first year of Bush’s presidency. While sanctions decimated the Panamanian economy, the military invasion left the country with inexperienced political leaders and internal instability. Academics who have studied the Panamanian crisis have not focused on the crucial twelve-month period between May 1989 and May 1990. It was the first military action without Cold War priorities for the United States and first attempt at economic restoration in what would become standard practice for later administrations. Scholars have not thoroughly examined the Bush administration’s crisis with Panama. The literature is scarce, but what has been written can be divided into three groups: disgruntled policy makers, academics, and journalists. Principally, this literature investigates the December 1989 military invasion, and only a few scholarly articles and books examine both the pre- and post-invasion periods. Lacking primary source material, journalists and scholars relied on articles and participant interviews. This thesis focuses on events and the outcome. It examines Bush’s policy toward Panama and the successes it engendered along with the failures it brought. Unlike Reagan, Bush successfully removed Noriega from power, but his administration’s unsuccessful post-invasion planning hindered the needs of Panama during the establishment of the young democratic government. Noriega may have decimated Panama’s economy, but the United States also failed by not helping with a clear and concise objective after Noriega’s departure. This thesis demonstrates that Bush acted with prudence in 1989, invading Panama only when all other diplomatic options failed. Yet, this thesis shows that the Bush administration did not have a plan for Panama’s economic restoration. By focusing too much energy on removing Noriega rather than on helping Panama regain a solid economic foundation, Bush allowed his desire to help the fledging country to be overshadowed by a lack of post-invasion plans.

Abstract:
The present study examined the relationship between early rearing experience and reproductive competence in captive adult giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus). Life history information of 52 giant pandas and 34 spectacled bears were obtained from the International Studbook and by interviewing staff at institutions housing the subjects. The early rearing experience variables included duration of mother rearing, social access within 1-yr period following maternal separation, and birth origin. Correlation, Chi-square, and logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Contrary to findings from studies with other animals, the results generally suggest that early rearing experience is not related to adult reproductive success in giant pandas and spectacled bears. Alternative explanation and limitation of the study were discussed; suggestions were made for future study.

Abstract:
From 1501 onwards the existence of the interoceanic passage sealed the fate of the panama isthmus, at first economically then politically, a geographic area was built up around this strategic crossroads between two oceans, in 1850, this "centre of the world" was brought into north america's sphere of influence. On 18th november 1903, the herran-hay gave the united states exclusive control over the management and security of the canal, which became a veritable enclave, being thus subjected to both the direct influence of the north americans, the main providers of employment, and to more specifically latin american currents of opinion, the panamanian labour movement was necessarily of a district kind. Despite elements in commo, with the other latin americanlabour movements (chronology of structures and forms, and similar methods), the panamanian labour movement was characterized by two original features : the very nature of the working class itself and its relations with nationalism, its beginnings correspond to the setting up of the infrastructures aimed at developing the country's geographic importance and not the exploitation of its mining or agricultural resources, this was the original vice of the panamanian labour movement. Ruling class and exploited class were perceived in relation to the presence of the americans and not in relation to the national bourgeoisie. Thus the panamanian labour movement had very close ties with the nationalist movement, although it never completely identified itself with it and was able to keep its own independence and raison d'etre

Abstract:
Giant pandas are unique animals because of their digestive system is similar to carnivores but they have in fact adapted to a plant diet with bamboo as their main food source. According to fossils records, giant pandas were omnivorous approximately 7 million years ago, becoming almost vegetarian after 4.6 to 5 million years of evolution. However, their genome and anatomical structure do not favor bamboo digestion. For more than a decade, researchers have been questioning the underlying mechanism of their ability to digest bamboo. In 2010, the genome of giant panda was completed, which confirmed that their genome had no gene encoding for cellulolytic enzymes. Thus, the gut microbiota of giant panda, which has been hypothesized to play a key role in bamboo digestion, has garnered unprecedented attention. Researchers are also interested in the giant panda’s gut microbes due to their potential application in biomass conversion. In Chapters 2 and 3 of this thesis, the microbial catalog of the giant panda’s gut microbiota was characterized, showing possible age-related microbial dysbiosis. Moreover, the microbiota, both bacterial and fungal was highly individualized because very few operational taxonomic units were shared among the four pandas in this study. Novel homoacetogens were also identified in the giant panda using functional gene clone-library sequencing. Using metagenomic sequencing, I uncovered the first evidence of human and animal related viruses in the giant panda’s gut. In addition to the community structure, I also determined the metabolic pathways of the microbiome. From KEGG annotation, a metabolic pathway for both cellulose and hemicellulose metabolism was identified. Comparative metagenomic analysis indicated that the giant panda’s gut microbiome was taxonomically and functionally distinct from those in mammals. In Chapters 4 and 5, a total of 97 species of bacteria were isolated and identified using biochemical assays. Four of these bacteria showed powerful cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic activities on solid media. The gram-positive bacteria (HKUOP_BS) and the gram-negative bacteria (HKUOP_A14) were found to be rod shaped, facultative anaerobes that had the ability to powerfully hydrolyze both cellulose and hemicellulose using intracellular and extracellular enzymes respectively. In Chapter 6, I determined the complete genome of a cellulolytic bacterium, Klebsiella oxytoca HKUOPL1, from giant panda and further described the annotated virulence, drug resistant, functional and potential horizontal transferring genes. The phylogenomic tree indicated that K. oxytoca HKUOPL1 closely resembled the K. oxytoca KCTC 1686 strain commonly used in 2,3-butanediol production. In captive giant pandas, a mucous excretion episode usually occurs with mild to severe colic. To understand the host-microbial interactions during this episode, bacterial communities were compared between mucous excreta and normal feces. The shifts in community abundance (especially flooding of Clostridia) may be associated with the mucous excretion episode. This study provides a better understanding of the microbial community structure and function in the giant panda’s gut.
