Abstract:
Construction equipment such as wheel loaders and dumpers are constantly getting updated with new technology when it comes to performance and fuel consumption. But the interior in the cockpit has not been exposed to any dramatic changes for decades. A modernized cockpit gives the driver a more modern feel of driving a highly technological machine, while at the same time enables for personalization. This thesis work presents a new way of improving the look and feel for displaying relevant information and also relaying information to both the driver of the machine and spectators outside. It includes a way of rerouting CAN-bus signals from a construction machine and displaying it on a tablet. The core idea with the solution is to make it as modular as possible to further improve and be able to use it in any machine available at Volvo's disposal. With this in mind, any machine could use the same software, the same hardware and still be able to fully utilize all the features that have been implemented from the thesis work. The idea and implementational results are designed as partly embedded and partly towards user interface.

Pfeiffer, Lars. "Durability assessment of sandwich panel construction." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2005. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842788/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to establish a testing scenario, allowing an evaluation of the durability for sandwich panels. In the context of this research, sandwich panels are thin, metal-faced, three-layer panels with rigid core materials. A literature review has been carried out, highlighting the fact that, up to now, only limited research in the area of sandwich durability has been conducted. The research carried out up to date tried to distinguish between suitable and unsuitable materials for sandwich applications. This report tries to take a more accurate, quantity-driven approach, which includes the consequences of material property deterioration on design procedures. In a first introduction, the principle mechanical behaviour of sandwich structures together with the specific failure modes is presented. Different typical components and their basic properties are described. An introduction to the current state of the art with reference to the actual standards and regulations is given. Different aspects of durability impacts are shown. The shortcomings of durability evaluation in the current state of the art are presented and a plan of action to overcome the shortcomings is given. This includes the development of a mathematical model, connecting tensile strength perpendicular to the faces with wrinkling strength. For polyurethane core panels, chemical reactions based on auto-oxidation under the presence of oxygen and diffusion models for oxygen into polymer matrixes are presented. An artificial ageing scenario is derived. Measurements from internal climates in mineral wool panels are combined with an existing ageing model. On the base of the obtained results, the ageing models presented in prEN 14509, the European standard for sandwich panels, are discussed. Finally, a complete testing and evaluation scenario, accessing sandwich durability, is proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to create a self-aligning platform for solar panels for better utilization of the renewable solar energy source that is available. The difference between present self-aligning solutions and the proposed one is its two repositioning modes to find the optimal position which implies higher efficiency in terms of harnessing the solar energy. The movement is based on two axes rotation. The objective is to compare the final prototype with a stationary support structure, which will demonstrate an improved efficiency with the self-aligning platform. The achieved results demonstrate a slight improvement in efficiency. This report has the purpose to explain how the construction work during the project has been done and, at the same time, the result of a Bachelor’s degree project in Mechatronics at The Royal Institute of Technology.

Phan, Catherine Ninh. "The extended high-order sandwich panel theory." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/43578.

Full text
Abstract:
A new high order theory, referred to as the Extended High-Order Sandwich Panel Theory (EHSAPT), was formulated for orthotropic sandwich beams/wide panels with a general layout. This new theory accounts for the axial, transverse normal, and shear rigidity of the core. Validation of the present theory was performed for several structural analysis problems including: static loading, static instability (global buckling and wrinkling), free vibrations (natural frequencies), and dynamic loading (blast and impact). The accuracy of the theory was assessed by comparison with elasticity solutions and with experiment. It is shown that this new theory has superior accuracy over other available computational models, especially for sandwich beams/wide panel configurations with stiffer cores.

Guo, Cheng. "Panel Stacking and Worker Assignment Problems in Residential Construction Using Prefabricated Panels: A Lean Approach." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77092.

Full text
Abstract:
A current trend in residential construction is the use of prefabricated wall panels. It is important to carefully establish how panels will be stacked, because an optimal sequence will improve productivity and reduce the possibility of worker injury. Mathematical models and heuristics are proposed for solving the panel stacking problem without consideration of interference. Dissertation work includes a mathematical model of the corresponding panel stacking problems in which the goal is to minimize total weighted panel move distance concurrent with certain construction assumptions. The heuristic method was provided to establish how each panel would be stacked and gave the drop-off location of each stack. The heuristic method was found to be able to reduce the total weighted panel move distance and ensure connectivity was always maintained, meanwhile, interference could also be avoided. In terms of solution speed, the heuristic method can solve real size problems in less than one second. Solutions to such problems can increase productivity. Three improvements to the only known existing panel stacking algorithm with consideration of interference were proposed. The computational results indicate the proposed algorithm performed better than existing algorithm in all experimental cases. Improvement on panel move distance ranged from 1.35-47.93%, and improvement on interfering panels ranged from 20-100%. The proposed algorithm can solve non-rectangular cases (not possible with existing algorithm) and was compared with an experienced panel designer and commercial software. When compared to the proposed algorithm, total weighted panel move distance increased 0.10-85.52% and 0.77-136.23%, respectively, for the panel designer and software. While connectivity was 100% for all cases with the proposed algorithm (the algorithm ensures connectivity is always maintained), it ranged from 69.56-86.95% and 73.33-90.91%, however, for the panel designer and software respectively. Finally, the proposed algorithm can solve the interfering panels in the last stack: this cannot be done with the existing algorithm. Because prefabricated wall panels are typically large and cumbersome to work with, there is a significant probability of worker injury. It is important to carefully establish how each panel will be handled by workers. This is typically the responsibility of field construction foreman, but such personnel are often ill-equipped to make such decisions. An alternative, proactive approach is to establish how each panel will be handled in advance, such that overall ergonomic consequences can be properly considered. This dissertation presents mathematical models of the corresponding construction task scheduling and worker assignment problems, where the goal is to minimize total project completion time (subject to worker quantity constraints) and assign tasks to workers as evenly as possible. The solution of such problems can help residential construction managers better plan construction by establishing the ergonomic impact associated with a given construction plan. A heuristic was also developed to solve large problems by balancing workload between workers. The heuristic was found to be able to provide near-optimal solutions, and can solve large problems in less than one second.

Lim, Chim Chai. "Analysis, design, and construction of tilt-up wall panel." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45801.

Full text
Abstract:
The idea of tilt-up construction started in America in the early I900’s. In the beginning, this technique was mainly used on structures such as industrial warehouses and factories. However, recent developments and improvements in tilt-up construction technique and accessories have enabled this building method to be applied to many architecturally appealing offices and residential structures. There are many details the design-build team must consider to ensure the success of a tilt-up project. The floor slab must be designed for panel casting and to withstand the loading of the mobile crane which will be used to lift the panel. The crane capacity affects the panel size and weight. Proper curing and bondbreaker application are very important to reduce bonding and to ensure clear cleavage between concrete surfaces. Changing rigging configuration consumes expensive crane time and must be reduced to minimum possible. The availability of ground-release quick connect/disconnect tilt—up hardware improves workers safety and speeds up the erection process substantially. Although the stress analysis of simple wall panels during erection can be done by hand, panels with more complicated geometry or with openings, are more efficiently analysed with a computer. Many manufacturers have technical services to help in the design of insert layout so that the concrete will not be over stressed when the panel is tilted into position. After the panel is plumbed, it is braced temporarily before the final connection is made. For in-place loading there are now design aids available which ease the design process. When properly designed and built, tilt—up has proved to be a fast, efficient, and economical building construction technique.

Sullivan, Sean Robert. "Construction and Behavior of Precast Bridge Deck Panel Systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27479.

Full text
Abstract:
A bridge with precast bridge deck panels was built at the Virginia Tech Structures Laboratory to examine constructability issues, creep and shrinkage behavior, and strength and fatigue performance of transverse joints, different types of shear connectors, and different shear pocket spacings. The bridge consisted of two AASHTO type II girders, 40 ft long and simply supported, and five precast bridge deck panels. Two of the transverse joints were epoxied male-female joints and the other two transverse joints were grouted female-female joints. Two different pocket spacings were studied: 4 ft pocket spacing and 2 ft pocket spacing. Two different shear connector types were studied: hooked reinforcing bars and a new shear stud detail that can be used with concrete girders. The construction process was well documented. The change in strain in the girders and deck was examined and compared to a finite element model to examine the effects of differential creep and shrinkage. After the finite element model verification study, the model was used to predict the long term stresses in the deck and determine if the initial level of post-tensioning was adequate to keep the transverse joints in compression throughout the estimated service life of the bridge. Cyclic loading tests and shear and flexural strength tests were performed to examine performance of the different pocket spacings, shear connector types and transverse joint configurations. A finite element study examined the accuracy of the AASHTO LRFD shear friction equation for the design of the horizontal shear connectors. The initial level of post-tensioning in the bridge was adequate to keep the transverse joints in compression throughout the service life of the bridge. Both types of pocket spacings and shear connectors performed exceptionally well. The AASHTO LRFD shear friction equation was shown to be applicable to deck panel systems and was conservative for determining the number of shear connectors required in each pocket. A recommended design and detailing procedure was provided for the shear connectors and shear pockets.

Abstract:
This project will be a part of the LODESTAR experiment. LODESTAR is one of the experiments scheduled to fly on the REXUS/BEXUS 26 high altitude balloon flight. The primary objective of the experiment is to investigate the effects of cosmic radiation on CIGS solar cells. The objective of this project is to build a mechanical design that can fulfill all requirements set by the ESA user manual. The mechanical design will first be drawn in mechanical CAD, where the drawing will be constructed from the ESA requirements. Later the design will be simulated in order to choose appropriate materials and a design that can withstand all simulations. Lastly the design will be built according to the drawings and tested according to the simulations. The mechanical design withstood all the simulations and verification tests with no visual deformation, except for the simulation and verification of the drop test. Both the drop simulation and verification test resulted in deformation in one of the aluminium plates. Since this mechanical design is constructed to be used only once, small deformations is within the margin of error. The deformation resulted by the simulation and verification of the drop test matched with a high precision. This is a good confirmation of the results of the drop test. In conclusion, the executed tests gave very promising results. Therefor the design constructed fits all the requirements to travel with solar panels in stratospheric conditions.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTech (Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
The world has been experiencing energy-related problems following pressuring energy demands which go along with the global economy growth. These problems can be phrased in three paradoxical statements: Firstly, in spite of a massive and costless solar energy, global unprecedented energy crisis has prevailed, resulting in skyrocketing costs. Secondly, though the sun releases a clean energy, yet conventional plants are mainly being run on unclean energy sources despite their part in the climate changes and global warming. Thirdly, while a negligible percentage of the solar energy is used for power generation purposes, it is not optimally exploited since more than its half is wasted in the form of heat which contributes to lowering efficiency of solar cells and causes their premature degradation and anticipated ageing. The research is geared at addressing the issue related to unsatisfactory efficiencies and anticipated ageing of solar modules. The methodology adopted to achieve the research aim consisted of a literature survey which in turn inspired the devising of a high-efficiency novel thermal electric solar power panel. Through an in-depth overview, the literature survey outlined the rationale of the research interest, factors affecting the performance of PVs as well as existing strategies towards addressing spotted shortcomings. While photovoltaic (PV) panels could be identified as the most reliable platform for sunlight-to-electricity conversion, they exhibit a shortcoming in terms of following the sun so as to maximize exposure to sunlight which negatively affects PVs’ efficiencies in one hand. On the other hand, the inability of solar cells to reflect the unusable heat energy present in the sunlight poses as a lifespan threat. Strategies and techniques in place to track the sun and keep PVs in nominal operational temperatures were therefore reviewed.

Abstract:
The role of risk management in the construction industry is essential due to the complexityand dynamic environment of the projects. To enhance project success, it is important toembed risk management practices in every activity of the project. The research question is “What is the classification of risks of joint ventures projects indeveloping countries and especially in countries that are facing economic crisis?” Theobjective of this thesis work is to assess the risks by creating proper risk probability versusrisk impact matrices and proceed with further analysis and based on the criticality of themand furthermore to allocate the risks and possible bias of the Concession AgreementBased on literature review and the objective of this thesis work, the propositions are thefollowing: “1) All the examined risks have the possibility to exist. 2) Risks, which hugelyimpact joint venture projects, are financial risks. 3) The purpose of the ConstructionContract is to ensure a fair distribution of risks between the parties, determining the parties'rights, duties, responsibilities and obligations in advance. 4) Criticality is an independentvariable from impact and possibility.”Due to the nature of this research and the research objective, the scientific idealimplemented is critical realism. This research is conducted based on quantitative method ofprimary data analysis. A questionnaire was formed in order to be given to the Panel ofExperts from different organizations for the evaluation of the problem.Based on the empirical data and analysis, the author indentified and evaluated the risks ofthe joint venture construction projects in developing countries within the definedenvironment of the consortium, where the state has a specific regal role, based oncriticality, risk probability and risk impact. The analysis of the data was done with the RankReciprocal method (Carr & Zwick, 2007, p.70). In this thesis work, they are identified, individually and also aggregately, the specific risks with high criticality, high probabilityand high impact. The risks of joint venture projects classified with the higher criticality, thehigher probability and the higher impact, aggregately, are: Public Utilities Organizations(P.U.O.) permits delay (due to either Concessionaire's fault, or State's), State defaults (or anExtensive Force Majeure Event creates a State Event of Default), Events of Delay occurduring Design-Construction period affecting that period or the next one (the OperationPeriod), Critical path complications due to Archaeological Surveys revealing antiquities,Delays, inability of State in its obligation to go forth in expropriations. Risk managers canfocus on those risks and ensure the success of risk management and project control.

Porter, Scott D. "Laboratory Testing of Precast Bridge Beck Panel Transverse Connections for Use in Accelerated Bridge Construction." DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/351.

Full text
Abstract:
Precast concrete bridge deck panels have been used for decades to accelerate bridge construction. Cracking of the transverse connection between panels is a common problem that can damage deck overlays and cause connection leaking leading to corrosion of lower bridge elements. To better understand the behavior of bridge deck transverse female-to-female connections, shear and moment lab testing were performed at Utah State University for the Utah Department of Transportation. Two existing UDOT connections were tested, a welded stud connection and a post tensioned connection. A variation of the welded connection using rebar was also tested. In addition, two new curved bolt connections were tested as a new method of post tensioning a connection. The manner of connection cracking and associated cracking loads were recorded along with the ultimate connection capacities. The connections were also tested in a low cycle, high amplitude cyclical shear test. Lab testing showed that the welded stud connection had the lowest moment capacity. It also showed that the welded rebar connection had significantly higher strength than the welded stud connection with higher cracking and ultimate loads. Curved bolts were also shown to be a good way to post tension a connection with similar moment capacities as the post tensioned connection. Longer curved bolts were found to perform better than shorter curved bolts.

Full text
Abstract:
Concrete sandwich wall panels have been used for decades in the precast concrete construction industry because of their thermal efficiency. To achieve full or partial-composite action in concrete sandwich panel walls, the engineer must obtain a percent composite action from a connector manufacturer, making some engineers uncomfortable. Engineers are dependent upon the recommendations given by the connector manufacturers to establish their designs. This project tested six full scale sandwich panel walls to evaluate the percent composite action of various connectors and compare the results to those provided by the composite connector manufacturers. This project aimed to validate current procedures using these methods, and to develop simpler, more efficient methods for predicting overall strength of this innovative building system. This study concluded that the reported degrees of composite action from each manufacturer are considered conservative in all instances for the connectors tested. Additionally, the intensity and type of connectors are important factors in determining the degree of partial composite action in a panel.

Amigo, Jesus Menendez. "Optimisation of timber frame closed panel systems for low energy buildings." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2017. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/1035263.

Abstract:
The United Kingdom published a legally binding document to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by year 2020 up to 34% against the 1990 levels. This target also fulfils the Europe 2020 strategy of 20% carbon emission reductions by year 2020 (EC, 2010). Emissions due to space heating count for around 60% of the total domestic emissions (DCLG, 2012). The report “Rethinking Construction” published in 1998 emphasised the opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of the UK construction sector (Egan, 1998). More recently, a framework has been published by the Government to tackle fuel poverty by building more energy efficient homes (DECC, 2015). In terms of energy performance, Passivhaus is recognised as one of the most energy efficient and researched construction standards which requires an exceptionally high-level of insulation and airtightness. Closed-panel timber frames are a relatively new system in UK with an opportunity for growth. These advanced panels are pre-fitted in the factory, reducing the on-site work. However, closed-panel systems present a more complex sole plate fixing detail which can have an undesirable long-term impact on the structural and thermal performance of the building. The work presented in this thesis investigates the structural considerations, racking performance, of timber frame closed panel systems for future building regulations. The thesis underlines the significance of structural stability, serviceability and detailing in relationship with long-term thermal efficiency and airtightness, according to Passivhaus standard. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the structural racking performance of advanced closed panel systems. A comparison was made between the behaviour of the timber frame panels and the analytical PD 6693-1. A set of different wall panel built-ups is presented for optimised Passivhaus design, including thermal bridge-free sole plate details. A timber frame racking software application was developed to optimise the structural design of shear walls. A parametric study was carried out with this tool to generate efficient timber frame wall design tables for different applied racking loads and U-values. The software application also allows for direct specification of robust sole plate base fixings and thermal bridge free details.

Yu, Xu. "Investigation of a novel multifunctional roof panel for hybrid photovoltaic/thermal/daylight application in atrium and large green house." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/30595/.

Full text
Abstract:
Daylight is an energy efficient solution for illumination and visual comfort in buildings. However, successful daylight design requires effective daylight control technology to eliminate the negative impact such as overheating, unbalanced indoor daylight distribution and glare. With this mind, the current thesis presents a novel multifunctional roof panel which might be applied in atrium and large green house. The working principle of the panel is based on the non-imaging low-concentration solar collector: dielectric Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC). Detailed study on the dielectric CPC has found that there would be some light escaping from side wall of CPC when the incident light is beyond CPC acceptance angle, which could actually be used for indoor daylight provision; while the incident light concentrated on the base of CPC could be used for concentrating PV application. Thus a dielectric CPC panel which consists of several trough dielectric CPC rods is designed and manufactured, its function of hybrid PV/Daylight is investigated through PHOTOPIA simulation and outdoor testing, both simulated and measured results showed that under sunny condition, only 10-15% of light could be transmitted through the panel in cooling season, and the rest of the light is used for concentrating PV application; while light transmittance of about 40-60% is achievable in winter period, when daylight is desired. Additionally, constant light transmittance of about 40% is achievable under overcast sky. The above figures could verify the seasonal daylight control ability of the panel. On the other hand, for the designed panel, the rejected heat on PV could still flow into the building. As a result, a PV/Thermal system is designed to remove the rejected heat on PV cell and reutilize it for thermal application such as food drying. The design parameter such as approach velocity, pitch distance, and perforation porosity are numerically investigated by CFD simulation. The prototype of the system is built and measured under solar simulator and real sky. Both simulated and measurement results showed that the heat recovery efficiency could be 40-80% depending on different geometries and approach velocities; and little amount of rejected heat could transfer from the PV cell to the building interior. The hybrid PV/Thermal application seems to be achievable. Lastly, the energy and economic performance for the EW-orientated dielectric CPC panel is investigated using new proposed concept of “inner south projection angle” and its correlation with the CPC optical performance, the building energy simulation software EnergyPlus and its weather data are also employed. An example case on an educational building with a central atrium in Nottingham shows that: compared to the conventional double glazing window, there is 55% increase in useful daylight illuminance (500-2000lux) percentage; 81.5% reduction in window solar heat gain in cooling season and only 10.78% reduction in window solar heat gain in heating season; there is also a power generation of 290.65W/m2 from PV cells; and the estimated payback period is less than 5 years. Therefore, the proposed multifunctional roof panel for PV/Thermal/Daylight application could comprehensively utilise the solar energy and provide comfort thermal and visual indoor environment.

Yuksel, Bahadir S. "Experimental Investigation Of The Seismic Behavior Of Panel Buildings." Phd thesis, METU, 2003. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/1070309/index.pdf.

Abstract:
Shear-wall dominant multi-story reinforced concrete structures, constructed by using a special tunnel form technique are commonly built in countries facing a substantial seismic risk, such as Chile, Japan, Italy and Turkey. In 1999, two severe urban earthquakes struck Kocaeli and Dü
zce provinces in Turkey with magnitudes (Mw) 7.4 and 7.1, respectively. These catastrophes caused substantial structural damage, casualties and loss of lives. In the aftermath of these destructive earthquakes, neither demolished nor damaged shear-wall dominant buildings constructed by tunnel form techniques were reported. In spite of their high resistance to earthquake excitations, current seismic code provisions including the Uniform Building Code and the Turkish Seismic Code present limited information for their design criteria. This study presents experimental investigation of the panel unit having H-geometry. To investigate the seismic behavior of panel buildings, two prototype test specimens which have H wall design were tested at the Structural Mechanics Laboratory at METU. The experimental work involves the testing of two four-story, 1/5-scale reinforced concrete panel form building test specimens under lateral reversed loading, simulating the seismic forces and free vibration tests. Free vibration tests before and after cracking were done to assess the differences between the dynamic properties of uncracked and cracked test specimens. A moment-curvature program named Waller2002 for shear walls is developed to include the effects of steel strain hardening, confinement of concrete and tension strength of concrete. The moment-curvature relationships of panel form test specimens showed that walls with very low longitudinal steel ratios exhibit a brittle flexural failure with very little energy absorption. Shear walls of panel form test specimens have a reinforcement ratio of 0.0015 in the longitudinal and vertical directions. Under gradually increasing reversed lateral loading, the test specimens reached ultimate strength, as soon as the concrete cracked, followed by yielding and then rupturing of the longitudinal steel. The displacement ductility of the panel form test specimens was found to be very low. Thus, the occurrence of rupture of the longitudinal steel, as also observed in analytical studies, has been experimentally verified. Strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and story drifts of the test specimens were examined by evaluating the test results.

Duck is a very important agronomic species in France, especially for fatty liver industry which presents 75% worldwide production. Moreover, duck is also a scientific model for avian influenza research as it is a natural reservoir for avian influenza viruses. The work presented here is part of the international collaboration on duck genome sequencing, including SNP detection and mapping, EST sequencing. Our goal is to provide a genome map allowing for fine mapping QTL and identifying candidate genes involved in expression of agronomic traits. A panel composed of 90 radiation hybrids was produced by fusing irradiated duck donor cells with hamster cells. To avoid large-scale culture of the clones, PCR genotyping involving Whole Genome Amplification (WGA) and/or reduction of reaction volumes were tested and two first maps for duck chromosomes were made. We also used the PCR genotyping method to test for the quality of duck sequence scaffold assemblies, which had been produced by the Beijing Genome Institute (BGI, China). Finally, to cover the whole genome, we performed a low-pass sequencing (0. 1X depth) of hybrids, allowing for rapid map development. These maps allow the detection of chromosomal rearrangements that have taken place between the duck and chicken genomes, which have diverged 80 million years ago

Abstract:
Extruded aluminium has become the material of choice for building envelope owing to its lightness, wide range of possibilities for profile design, durability and the eco-friendly attitude. In the light of recent technological developments in metal and glass industries, there has been various new approaches towards aluminum curtain wall systems which are mostly preferred by architects in high-rise buildings. Herein, the panel curtain wall system is determined as innovative and the modern aluminium curtain wall system. Furthermore, in the recent prestigious high-rise buildings, the demand of the architects and the contractors begins to replace the conventional curtain wall system which is constructed via stick construction technique, with panel curtain wall system which is applied to the building in a modular form . The main aim of this study is to investigate why the panel curtain wall system comes to the forefront especially for high-rise buildings. Accordingly, the basic architectural, structural and constructional design principles of unitized aluminium curtain wall systems are defined, analyzed and then the advantages and disadvantages of this system are pointed out from an architectural point of view. In order to evaluate the performance of panel curtain wall system against environmental factors, the facade tests, which are new and still-developing methods in Turkey, are used. The extensive facade tests have been conducted on full-scale specimen under field conditions reproduced in an equipped test chamber by authorized facade testing company and the assessment of this curtain wall performance was provided accordance with related standards. The two story full-size specimen, was 3000 mm to 7600 mm, belongs to one of the prestigious office towers constructed in Istanbul. The facade tests conducted to the specimen include watertightness, air permeability, wind resistance and building movement tests. In this study, the performance criteria of panel curtain wall system were investigated not only against environmental factors but also against human sourced factors. It is expected that this study will provide a guideline for system designers on the future research and development phase and for architects on the selection of curtain wall systems for their buildings due to the conducted test results and other advantages taken throughout this study.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes determinants of housing construction in regions in the Czech Republic. The main research question is the impact of standard of living on housing construction. The living standard is expressed in terms of net disposable income per capita and housing construction represents the number of housing starts. Other determinants included to the model estimation are rate of unemployment, housing price and number of mortgage. Analysis works with the panel data from period 2005- 2015 and all variables are used in the logarithmic form with one year lag. The model is estimated by random effects model. The assumption about positive impact of living standard on housing construction is not confirmed, because of the statistical insignificance of variable net disposable income. In case of other variables expected effects are confirm. The increases in rate of unemployment and housing prices have the negative impact on housing construction. And opposite the number of mortgage has positive impact on housing construction.

Abstract:
An investigation was conducted related to the dimensional stability of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) in landfill applications. Multiple occurrences of panel separation of overlap seams in GCLs have been documented; however, explanation for the relative contribution of various mechanisms causing shrinkage has been limited. A systematic test program was conducted to determine the effects of a variety of conditions on GCL dimensional stability. Effects of initial moisture content, permeant type, and overburden pressure were tested by subjecting various GCL products to wet-dry cycles and measuring the dimensional change with each cycle. Different GCL types were each tested under various combinations of initial moisture content (as-received, 50, 75, 100, and 125%), permeant types (tap water, distilled water, and 0.1 M CaCl2), and overburden pressures (0, 6, and 20 kPa). Thermal expansion tests were conducted by heating or cooling GCL test specimens to temperatures of 0, 10, 40, 60, and 80°C at constant moisture content. Subgrade tests were conducted by placing GCL test specimens on compacted clay and sand subgrades in different orientations and hydration conditions in sealed containers and measuring dimensional change over time. Mechanical necking tests were conducted by subjecting GCL specimens to varying levels of tension and measuring the longitudinal and transverse strains at each load increment. Field simulation tests were conducted by placing specimens on a compacted sand subgrade beneath an exposed geomembrane liner outdoors in late summer. Initial moisture content tests resulted in shrinkage strains as high as 20% after 20 wet-dry cycles. GCLs ranged from slightly anisotropic [approximately 1.1:1 ratio of machine (MD) to cross-machine (XMD) shrinkage] to highly anisotropic (approximately 3:1 ratio of MD to XMD shrinkage). Most combinations of GCL type and initial moisture content resulted in GCL MD shrinkage strains greater than a value that would cause panel separation (termed panel separation threshold, PST) at roll ends during the first wet-dry cycle. All test specimens contracted beyond the PST in the MD within 3 wet-dry cycles. GCL specimens without attached geomembranes contracted beyond the PST in the XMD within 5 cycles. Permeant type tests demonstrated that hydration with 0.1 M CaCl2 reduced shrinkage by 50-80% compared to permeation with tap water. Overburden tests demonstrated that applying 6 kPa and 20 kPa reduced specimen shrinkage by at least 60% and 80%, respectively. Thermal expansion tests indicated that temperature changes at constant moisture content had little effect on GCL dimensional stability. Subgrade tests demonstrated that subgrade type and moisture as well as GCL type and orientation had effects on dimensional stability. Tensile necking tests demonstrated that transverse shrinkage occurred due to tensile forces in GCLs, but shrinkage was nearly always less than PST. Field simulation tests demonstrated that wet-dry cycles in the field were less intense and/or less frequent than in the laboratory. Results of this testing provide a basis for GCL overlap specifications necessary to maintain full coverage and future research to confirm a suggested method of preconditioning bentonite to prevent shrinkage.

Abstract:
Objectives set by the EU means that all buildings after 2020 has to be nearly zero energy buildings. This means that thicker layers of insulation have to be added in the wall construction which makes the wall thicker. It means that the living area will be reduced. Vacuum insulation is a highly effective type of insulation and because of its low thermal conductivity it has the ability to reduce the thickness in wall structures. This project investigates a proposal to apply vacuum insulation in one-storey buildings. In order to achieve the goals of the project, a proposal for a one-storey building was developed. Calculations have been made and the proposal was developed as an alternative to show how to construct a family home containing vacuum insulation. The empirical data was collected through interviews, document analysis and literature studies. The collected data was analyzed together with the theoretical framework that has been developed through literature studies and document analysis. Creating a wall construction containing vacuum insulation as a primary insulation usually means that the wall will be considerably thinner than a wall construction with traditional insulation. This means that living area can be saved. Vacuum insulation has to be protected properly as it is easily punctured where upon it loses the most of its insulation capacity. Vacuum insulation is not common on the Swedish construction market today, this is due to many factors, including its high price. Vacuum insulation is a good problem solver which can be used in bay windows to gain extra space. One can also make use for it in tight spaces. From an economic point of view vacuum insulation offers the greatest advantages in cities where living space is considerably higher than in rural areas. To take part of the work there is no need for prior knowledge about vacuum insulation. The project focuses only on wall structures in the single-storey villas, therefor, no indentations has been made on the floor- and roof structures or other building types. The project only focuses on newly constructed buildings. No calculations are made for moisture or production costs.

Woodward, Ben. "3D modelling of sandwich panels with functionally graded core." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2014. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=211061.

Full text
Abstract:
Sandwich panels are a type of structural panel, typically comprising two thin layers of high strength and stiffness known as face sheets which separate a thicker lightweight core of lower strength, stiffness and density. When combined, these layers offer excellent flexural strength to weight ratio without compromising on stiffness. Sandwich panels are utilised in a wide range of industries and applications from aerospace to construction. Due to mismatch of properties between face sheets and core, stress concentrations can occur at the interfaces, often causing delamination. One solution is inclusion of a functionally graded core; a core with properties which vary gradually from the face sheets to the centre, eliminating any abrupt changes in properties. Current research presents newly developed three dimensional analytical and numerical solutions used to gain further understanding of the introduction of a functionally graded core. A three dimensional elasticity solution for an isotropic sandwich panel with stiffness of the core graded in the thickness direction was developed, allowing for comparison of panels with functionally graded and homogenous cores to be completed. It was discovered that inclusion of the graded core removes the discontinuity in stresses at the interfaces and decreases both in- and out-of plane displacements throughout the panel. Since many real functionally graded materials do not exhibit isotropic characteristics, a three dimensional elasticity solution was thereafter developed for a sandwich panel with transversely isotropic core. The effects of individual engineering constants on panel performance were then studied and it was noted that the effects of shear deformation are obvious in thinner panels and those with low transverse shear modulus. A finite element model in ABAQUS was also developed, allowing geometry, loading and boundary conditions to be easily varied. To capture the continuously varying properties of the graded core, user defined graded finite elements were implemented.
