Nassori, Dounia. "Dynamiques urbaines et développement économique au Maroc." Thesis, Toulon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017TOUL2005/document.
Full textThis thesis proposes to study the evolution of city hierarchies and urban growth based on the case of Morocco. This country has experienced in recent decades a sustained urbanization process, both in large cities and small and medium-sized cities. Hence the need to proceed to a primatial urban demographic structure that requires coordination between certain national economic policies and planning policies carried out by major cities to be truly effective. A development policy resolutely turned so far towards the management of urban pressure in major cities. This led to a polarization of activities in some regions of the territory. Thus, this thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter examines the rank-size law and the contribution of economists and geographers in this process. The second chapter analyzes the three theoretical approaches that deal with the issue of urban growth, in particular theories of random growth, deterministic growth and the intersection of these two approaches, called hybrid. Finally, the last chapter is based on an empirical study at the regional level to identify the determinants of urban growth in Moroccan regions. The work undertaken in this thesis is based on original databases provided by the Office of the “Haut-Commissariat au Plan” to identify the size of Moroccan agglomerations and uses a set of statistical and econometric instruments. The various results obtained are a continuation of various studies carried out in regional sciences. These results indicate that Moroccan urban hierarchies are destined to change in the decades to come, but also that the economic growth of the regions of Morocco does not immediately affect the growth of the urban population

Full textThis dissertation is composed of three empirical articles resorting to econometric methods in panel data analysis to address various research questions. The main article investigates the evolution of the level of price transmission for the three major cereals (wheat, maize and rice) from the international commodity markets down to the local producers for 52 countries between 1970 and 2013 while attempting to identify the main drivers of the heterogeneity in pass-through. The second article measures the elasticity of air-traffic to GDP around the world and demonstrates that the relationship is very stable across régions and through time. Eventually, the third article models the mechanisms through which French life-insurers set the rate of return they pay annually to their policyholders

Full textMENA countries is today, at the center of ambitious economic stakes mainly in regional integration and structural transformation. However, the Arab States of this region have suffered great shortcomings and vulnerability in the economic and productive system in the aftermath of massive political, economic, social and popular upheavals and upheavals. These shocks present a number of new challenges. The main objective of this thesis is to study the new dynamics of the structural transformation process in order to propose new development trajectories for these countries. In this context, we address issues related to the spatial determinants and effects of this process, the relationship between economic complexity and air pollution on the one hand, and economic complexity and inequalities on the other education. For this, we consider a dynamic panel of 133 countries covering an important and recent period (1984 to 2014). Using recent data and integrating previously little used parameters, we highlight particular characteristics of the process of complexification of productive systems. From a general point of view, the results reveal that the productivity performance of productive systems is very heterogeneous within MENA countries and that their determinants depend on the characteristics of the economies. The large disparities observed are explained, beyond the significant effect of per capita income, by a deficiency in the institutional system, particularly in terms of access to innovation, but also to the abundance of natural resources or the attractiveness of foreign direct investment. Beyond the individual characteristics of economies, spatial analysis shows that geographical factors such as urbanization rate, trade agreements, but especially spatial location play a very important role in the process of structural transformation. We also bring, thanks to the tools derived from classical mechanics, answers to the limits of traditional economic models which are difficult to demonstrate the existence of a process of accelerating economic development

Full textThe « Great Recession » of 2008-2009 and the sovereign and public debt crises which strengthened in the euro area in the summer of 2011 are recent events that have crystallized the challenges facing economic analysis, especially those related to dating and predicting cyclical inflections of real activity. The purpose of this thesis is to study these two complementary approaches to the economic cycle. Chapter 1 provides a portrait of the cycle using three distinct conceptions of its turning points: the classical cycle, the growth cycle and the acceleration cycle. We also discuss the measurement of the cycle with respect to various possible representations of aggregate activity of a country, as well as to two existing traditions which encompass dating models. Moreover, we highlight the growing influence of the financial environment over business cycle fluctuations. In chapter 2, we develop two non-parametric algorithms in order to identify theinflections that are particular to each of the previously conceptualized cycles, but also to measure their main characteristics. The first algorithm is based on a univariate representation of overall economic activity, the second on its ultivariate representation; ultimately, we apply the algorithms to the data of the French economy between 1970 and 2010. Chapter 3 builds on our results for cyclical dating to predict French recessions since 1974. Using probit models, we illustrate the role of monetary and financial variables as leading indicators of French business cycle fluctuations. In addition, we show that our models accurately detect recessions for a forecasting lag of two-quarters. Chapter 4 extends the entire analysis to several member states of the euro zone, with observations beginning in 1979. We first construct a chronology of their classical cycles, and then we propose an analysis of their main characteristics and their degree of synchronization. Finally, based on financial and monetary indicators in the context of a dynamic probit with fixed effects, we can anticipate the recessionary episodes which occurred in these economies with a horizon of two quarters

Full textThis thesis analyses the relationship between financial development and growth through theoretical and empirical assessments. (i) The theoretical contribution can be sum up in three points: at first we show by means of a simple model of endogenous growth that financial development and growth relationship can be characterized by multiple balances. Then, using overlapping generation’s model, we find that financial equilibrium is better than non financial equilibrium as far as the share of income invested and growth are more raised at the level of the first balance than the second. Finally, by taking into account financial innovation in endogenous growth model, we show that the allocation of productive resources in financial sector increases its efficiency and the externality effect on real sector, which improve the economic growth. (ii) The empirical assessments show at first a positive link between finance and growth. In spite of the relationship between financial development and its instability, this last has negative impact on growth only in short run. As for the causality between both variables, it is bi-directional as well in developed and developing countries. Finally, we show that finance and growth relationship is non-linear; what confirms theoretical results obtained through the multiple balances. The non-linearity can depend not only on structural parameters, but also on economic policies. Then, we can identify the structural characteristics and the economic policies that allow narrow relationship between real and financial sectors

Full textThis dissertation studies option variables. These opinions cover specially economic questions such as the level of wellbeing, financial situations, the minimum income question and the preference for redistribution. The treatment of these opinion variables and their relation to conventional economic questions such as income level or dynamics requires the use of special micro-econometric models. In this dissertation, the dynamics panel models are used to study the job status and income mobility. In the 6 chapter, we discuss the dynamic Tobit model with an emphasis on initial conditions. The choice between fixed or random effect is another question. Because subjective variables are ordinal and discrete, the identification of fixed effects is problematic. Random effects are better identified while the estimation difficulty increases with the integration dimension. To solve that, I use intensively simulation method in the study of dynamic multinomial logit model or dynamic tobit model. It is also been applied in the trivariate probit model to measure the conditional correlations among more than 2 ordinal variables

Full textIn France since the act I the decentralization in 1982, the local public investment is widely self-financed. The present research wonders from this point of view, on the economic rationality of the behavior of loan in an environment at first of non mobility, then mobility of the households and the companies. The first part of this thesis, brings two original theoretical contributions to the understanding of the local financial behavior by leaning on two axes. First of all in an environment of not mobility, this thesis shows that the model the decisive voter remains relevant in a context where on one hand the community offers durables goods (which engender recurring loads) and where she can borrow (wthat entails symmetrically recurring financial charges). The second part joins in a prospect econometric of analysis of the local financial behavior. First of all, the thesis confirms for the main part the model of request and intertemporal offer to the better public long-lasting premises stemming from the research and the watch, any equal things besides, that the dynamic specifications possess an explanatory power higher than the specifications in statics. Finally, establishing a link between the debts and the level of the investment of development, the model of stimultaneous equations concerning the debts and the investments concludes, in the sustainability of local public debt in France

Full textThe thesis presents highly topical macroeconomic imbalances problem and the related twin deficit phenomenon. Innovative distance-based methodology inspired by an algebraic term of the metric space allows to identify sources of the macroeconomic divergence, which are, in our case, the current account and the indebtedness. These factors are responsible for macroeconomic divergence in the world as well as in Europe, which suggests an importance of the twin deficit analysis. Text-mining, analysis of the content and systematic classification of the scientific papers on twin deficits reveal a dominance of the Mundell-Fleming approach and the Ricardian equivalence, confirmed mainly in developed countries. Twin deficit hypothesis in 14 countries of the EU15 in the context of the important public debt is tested by panel data threshold model. The model confirms twin deficit hypothesis only if a public debt-to-GDP ratio is of the range from 40.2% to 96.6%. The Ricardian equivalence is valid in the regime of the public debt-to-GDP higher than 96.6% (threshold model) or 93% (dynamic model explaining an asymmetric impact of the public debt on economic growth). One deficit does not deepen the second one, but efficiency of the expansionary fiscal policy to reestablish an economic growth is importantly reduced at this indebtedness level
