Abstract:
The aim of this paper is a reading into Pannenberg`s theological anthropology, by systematizing the theme and demonstrating, through the aforesaid author, that the religious dimension is an essential constitutive of the human being. The background of the paper is modernity - man situated in a modern context. In a first moment, the study discusses the person´s spiritual and corporeal dimensions, pointing out their mutual integration, specifically in Christian biblical context. The essay inquires into the theme of the human being, embedding it in the context of social relations, showing the tension existing between the individual and society - openness and seclusion. In a second moment, the study points out freedom as an indispensable constitutive of the human and of true subjectivity. It is in the experience of freedom that it is possible to speak about man as conscience. Freedom as well as transcendence are presuppositions for man`s religious dimension; transcendence expresses man´s movement in his life as a spirit; it also constitutes the movement of history, especially in the Christian vision of man and history. This paper shows man as openness to God, and evinces the theological basis for such argumentation. This is where the study develops the theme of man as image and likeness of God in Pannenberg´s thought, and the relation between this imago Dei and the world. At this point, the paper faces the question about validity of the religious dimension, and the idea of trust and openness in religious context, so as to situate the person as a religious identity. Finally the study reaches its foundation on Jesus Christ. Jesus is the prototype of the human; he is the foundation of our freedom and its goal. Jesus is the one who reconciles man with God and with himself; in Jesus, man finds his plenitude as eschatological hope.

This study seeks through the theological anthropology of Wolfhart Pannenberg, Deepens the content os the doctrine of Imago Dei and systematize it. To achieve such a goal, this work in his introduction will present some informations about the person, the life and the theology of Wolfhart Pannenberg. In the second stage we will get closer our goal doing a historical journey that will aim to present a little like happened the development of the doctrine of the Imago Dei at some moments from the history of the Christian thought. We will begin another stage ,the anthropological thought of our author observing the general lines of his anthropology. More precisely his anthropological presuppositions that express his vision of the human reality and his theological presuppositions that consist of his theological interpretation of the ontological characteristics of the human being. Interpretation that happens from a panoramic reading of the Bible and of the theological reflection in the history. These informations will supply us with the necessary subsidies in order that we understand the doctrine of the Imago Dei in his theology that will enable us to reach the fourth stage of our work when we will see their placements. Initially we will explain the motives in his opinion man is in a position of prominence in relation to other creatures, then we will understand the reason Pannenberg affirm to be Adam Imago Dei copy, and wich is in his point of view the implication of the Imago Dei in Adam’s existence. In the second part of the fourth chapter we will study the motives that take Pannenberg affirm that Jesus Christ is the God’s true image, in other words the image-model. Through this reasoning in his theological anthropology Jesus Christ is understood like the authentic man. Another question that we will raise in this second part of the fourth stage is the importance that our author gives to the condition of Jesus as son of God, Fact that is deeply connected in his understanding of the salvivic efficiency of his mission ordered by the Father, to reconcile the world. Doing that so every men through the action of the Spirit is able to enjoy a loving communion with God, and in this way reach the destiny that was determined in his creation according to the divine image.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the 'problem of hermeneutics', particularly as it applies to the interpretation of the Bible. A number of different approaches have been employed in order to try to bridge the distance between the past and the present. Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, which describes understanding as a 'fusion of horizons', has been influential. However, Gadamer has been criticized by a number of thinkers, particularly Emilio Betti and E.D. Hirsch, for not giving an adequate account of how a measure of objectivity or validity is possible in interpretation. This thesis presents a description of interpretation which resolves some of the apparent conflicts between these schools by presenting them as accounts of two, complementary levels of one interpretative process, levels related in a type of hermeneutical circle relation. Nevertheless, Betti and Hirsch's concerns for objectivity and validity could still not be satisfied without grounding this hermeneutical circle relation in an adequate ontology. To do this, the thesis turns to the work of Wolfhart Pannenberg. This thesis argues that Pannenberg, while accepting much of Gadamer's hermeneutics, goes beyond Gadamer and provides many helpful insights critical both for general hermeneutics and for biblical interpretation. Pannenberg grounds Gadamer's fusion of the two horizons, the past and the present, in universal history, conceived as an eschatologically orientated ontology, rather than in an ontology of language. The thesis argues that this is the third horizon necessary for interpretation. Pannenberg asserts that characteristics of universal history are made known proleptically in Jesus Christ. Consequently, this thesis argues for the use of a Christological principle in biblical interpretation and illustrates the use of such a principle in Paul (e.g., in I Cor. 8-10).

Abstract:
The doctrine of the justification represents one of the testimonies of the New Testament regarding the salvation which God has offered in Christ. Its importance for the ecclesiastical speech and practice was evidenced in the Lutheran Reformation. However, catholic theology and the protestant one have developed distinct conceptions concerning the theology of justification, something that caused reciprocal misunderstanding and condemnations. Wolfhart Pannenberg, XX century lutheran theologian, presents the doctrine of the justification from the dialogue between those Confessions. Without hiding the contrasts that exist between catholic and lutheran perspectives, he searches the comprehension of both positions through a deep biblical research and from the intention of the doctrinal statements. Thus, one perceives clearly the distinct unfoldings that this doctrine assumed within both theologies should not constitute a reason for condemnations or separation among the churches. The key element for the understanding of the doctrine of the justification in W. Pannenberg´s is the way he understands it in reference to the sacrament of the baptism. The goal of the present research is to evidence this relation as a corollary of Pannenberg´s systematic project, through his way of understanding the dynamics of the faith, as well as demonstrating its fruitful consequences to the ecumenical dialogue and the practice of the churches. We intend to convey the concept of faith in the author´s work as well as demonstrate what he means for the expression justice of the faith and the way it connects to the union of the faithful with Christ, sacramentally carried on through baptism. Finally, we are to evidence that the valuation of the sacramental element in the speech on the justification, on the part of this lutheran author, corrects those unilateral positions which had been settled in the protestant theological tradition and offer new perspectives to rethink some ecumenical and pastoral actions of the Catholic Church.

Abstract:
The question guiding the argument of my thesis is whether it is possible to articulate a political theology in terms of the idea of freedom. This possibility is explored through an analysis and evaluation of the political dimension of the theologies of Wolfhart Pannenberg and Gustavo Gutiérrez. For both these theologians, the idea of freedom emerges from reflection on the process of historical experience, which itself delimits the horizon of political activity. The relevance of theology for politics consists in its competence in interpreting the individual desire for liberty within the context of our created finitude, whose deepest meaning is revealed only in God’s work of salvation. In discerning the concrete possibilities of freedom, theology has therefore to consider the role of the church as the community for learning freedom, a role already identified as part of its mission in Paul’s epistle to the Galatians. In a further step, it has to consider more directly the nature of political authority and its conditioning of the actualization of human freedom through concrete practices in the life of societies and states. In this respect it is the task of theology to establish the creaturely and eschatological contexts of political life in such a way as to ground a morality of political justice. This triple structure, because it finds material justification with both theologians, creates the possibility of a fair and balanced comparison between two visions which share theoretical concerns to a surprising extent, enriching the scope of the dialogue, yet differ radically in practical orientation and commitments. This marked divergence will allow some reflection on the role of intra-theological debate in the self-definition of theological tradition against the political with regard to the competence of interpreting human freedom.

Abstract:
Considering the reductionisms with anthropologic trait experienced in the Christian spirituality and praxis in the present-day Latin American Church - that has, as a presupposition, a christology which will not adequately unite the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history, the crucified and the resurrected one - the present work intends to inquire into the relation between christology and anthropology in the Pannenbergian theological thinking. Our research lays special emphasis on the reflection about the contents of his Christology with the intent of determining whether it is possible to suitably connect Christology from above and Christology from below, and therefore overcome the anthropological dualisms experienced in our ecclesiastic reality. Pannenbergs Christological reflection rises from below, but takes the Christology from above as a presupposition, thereby allowing of a Christology that combines the humanity and divinity of Jesus, the crucified and the resurrected one, and providing an anthropology that integrates the multiple dimensions of human beings. According to Pannenberg, Christology has a previous understanding of the human being and of God. But that understanding is ultimately overcome because speaking about God and man means to speak about Jesus Christ. Through his life, death and resurrection, Jesus revealed his humanity and divinity. Therefore, one could assert that Jesus humanness and divinity are the grounds of the Christian anthropology and that between Christology and Anthropology there is a deep interaction that establishes a hermeneutic circularity among them.

Abstract:
Wolfhart pannenberg criticizes karl barth for his method of trinitarian theology, which sets up a divine subject prior to his triple differenciation, in such a way that the son and the spirit are ‘one-sidely’ dependent on the father, and he chooses another method, one that emphasizes a triple ‘reciprocal’ dependence disclosed in the revelation, and asserts god’s oneness eschatologically together with the identity of the economic and the immanent trinity. Going back to thomas aquinas, our study formulates two models which take into account both ‘reciprocity’ and ‘asymmetry’ for the divine relation. The trinitarian theologies of pannenberg and barth are analysed as applications of these models, whereas barth’s discussion is reconsidered with the help of maurice merleau-ponty. The results of both models are verified with respect to the christ who ‘takes our place on the cross’, barthian theology being then further developed with michel de certeau’s idea of ‘making place for the other’

Abstract:
Wolfhart pannenberg has largely contributed for a legitimization of the christian faith, in dialog with other sciences (areas of knowledge). He attempts to demonstrate the universality of the christian faith on the basis of a reflection on universal history, which he considers to be divine revelation. Pannenberg places the church and the sacraments in the heart of his theology and of the interconfessional dialog, thus contributing to a deep systematic reflection on this topics in protestant theology. The reality of jesus christ's life, death and resurrection is the proleptic inbreaking of the end of all history in the course of time, and the church is the place where this final end takes shape. The church's symbolic function is to be a representation of the humanity as it will be in the final reign of god, being an anticipation of it's reality. The church carries out this function in her sacramental action, which takes place in a life of communion and being open for the world in the kerygmatic task and the practice of love, justice and peace. The sacraments manifest the heart of god's mystery, and they are the moment where men submit themselves most immediately to the reign of god, and where they proleptically reach their final destination : that is full communion with god and with one another. Thus the church, in her sacramental life, serves as a sign of god's reign among all men

This dissertation has as its theme the historical issue of the Jesus’ resurrection according to the literary work of Wolfhart Pannenberg. The choice of this author took place due to the importance he gives the historical fundaments of faith’s affirmations. This theme aims to deepen the primitive community’s assertion that Jesus, once crucified and dead, resurrected among the dead and that this event happened within the context of the history. In view of to the importance of this event to the faith’s profession of the community, and as long as it was from it that the Christological reflection of the Church has begun, it is thought that this work has a great relevance for the theological research and, therefore, it justifies its own research. To accomplish it, were used, besides the chosen author as reference, theologians who also reflect on this thematic. The main hypothesis is that the faith’s profession of the community in Jesus’ resurrection can only find a secure footing if this event really happened in the historical-traditional context in which they lived. Otherwise, the professed faith would not pass from just an invention and, therefore, it would not sustain itself as a result of the passing of the centuries. From this it resulted that the Jesus’ resurrection can be asserted as a historic event

Abstract:
Three main questions give the fundamental structure for this master thesis: 1) In what way is the notion of law being perceived in the following theologians respectively; David P. Scaer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Wolfhart Pannenberg? 2) In what way is the notion of law being perceived in the encyclical Veritatis Splendor? 3) Which similarities and divergences can be found in the respective expositions of the notion of law?For the purpose of comparison, I have employed four questions of analysis. These are: A) What is “the law”? B) Is the law being effected, or is it working, in the world and if so - in what ways and for what purposes is it meant to serve? C) Does human beings have any capacities to understand and/or live in accordance to the law? D) Does the Gospel, perceived as the earthly life, actions, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, effect any alteration with respect to the purpose, range, function or interpretation of the law?In order to better understand Roman-Catholic concepts of law, the treatise on law of Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica is briefly presented. I have also analyzed and presented the encyclical Evangelium Vitae, so as to see whether it can add to the understanding of the Roman-Catholic notion of law as found in Veritatis Splendor. The Lutheran reception of Veritatis Splendor has been briefly discussed. Finally, I have compared the positions of these theologians in order to find similarities and divergences. Notable similarities are the tendency of John Paul II and David P. Scaer to view law as a unity, related to the essence of God. Each of the theologians also perceive a notion of law related to creation, expressed in terms of “natural law” and the concept of “the natural” found in Bonhoeffer. Furthermore they all have a high regard for the Decalogue, and find in it an expression of moral norms that can be said to be universal and appropriate for every human society. Notable divergences are the question of the absolute binding power of law, where Pannenberg and particularly Bonhoeffer answer in the negative whereas John Paul II answers in the affirmative. There are also apparent disagreements between the theologians in the questions of how the law relates to the Christian, and how the law relates to and functions in society.

Abstract:
Purpose: In this essay a limited and specific selection of Swedish pastoral letters, has been used in order to describe and analyze various depictions (images) of Christ. Furthermore, the similarities as well as the differences between the depictions, will be noted. The theoretical perspective used in the analysis is one of high versus low Christology i.e. whether the emphasis is focused on Christ as divine, or Christ as human, and the possible tension between the two. Also, the ontological and functional aspect of the images will be elucidated. Method: The used method is hermeneutic. The analysis is text oriented and initially a descriptive analysis is used to describe the various depictions. References will be made to Jesus – God and Man, by Prof. Wolfhart Pannenberg, and the article “Christology” by Prof. Ola Sigurdson. In the analysis that follows a comparative method will be used to form a normative analysis with constructive summaries of each depiction of Christ.   Results and conclusions: The result of this study shows that a various number of depictions of Christ is to be found within the selected pastoral letters. In some the image of Christ is described in a substantial and obvious way, like the Compass or a Fellow human being. In contrast, there are depictions of Jesus as the Brother and the Guide. In others a symbolic image is to be found, like the Star, the Sign or Logos. There are also more traditional dogmatic depictions as the Savior. In all of them an ontological and a functional aspect can be found. The depictions of Christ also have in common that the emphasis is mainly on the humanity of Christ. In many of them a tension between the divinity and the humanity of Christ is obvious. The images are mediating openness and diversity, showing Jesus Christ as an inspiration, a beacon and someone to follow. They are all providing answers to the question of the title of this essay: Who do they say I am?

Abstract:
This thesis takes as its starting point the work of the theologian and psychoanalyst Eugen Drewermann who reduces the theological language to a pure symbolic, without reference to a reality that transcends it. It seeks to show, using the example of the Incarnation and Resurrection, (two central affirmations of Christian faith), that Drewermann's approach is not the only one possible. Recent works in the Field of Neurotheology, and their implications for theology are discussed, as an extension of a reflection on Jung. Positions of various contemporary theologians are analyzed, especially those that Wolfhart Pannenberg defend, arguing that theological language refers to a real who transcends it, and that Incarnation cannot be understood unless we consider resurrection, regarded as a historic event. A comparison is then made between theological and scientific a discourse, which shows that the latter himself is not immune to models and metaphors. The goal is to understand how can a realistic theology, on the basis of a critical realism, is possible, which, while rejecting the relativistic perspectives, acknowledges the finitude of any discourse that makes of dogma a step on the path of truth

Sexton, Jason S. "The role of the doctrine of the Trinity in the theology of Stanley J. Grenz." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3025.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an examination into the primary features in the theology of one of the turn of the century's leading evangelical theologians, Stanley J. Grenz. It begins by establishing the controversial nature of Grenz's project within evangelical theology, and how his aims were misread by a number of evangelical scholars. It then argues that the primary feature in his writings was the doctrine of the Trinity, giving shape to his methodology, theology, and ethical engagement. Accordingly, this thesis identifies the most significant features he adopted and adapted from Wolfhart Pannenberg, whose influence on Grenz is readily seen. These features include not only how Grenz derived particular methodological aspects from Pannenberg (chap. 2), but also those related to the shape of his trinitarian theology itself (chap. 3). Next, while realizing that Grenz's new-found emphasis on a trinitarian project was not placed on a tabula rasa, a wider account of his trinitarian background is considered (chap. 4), as is the particular developmental shape of his doctrine of the Trinity itself (chap. 5). Following this, an examination is made into how Grenz accessed this doctrine of the Trinity, through the imago Dei concept, informed by a theological hermeneutic, theological exegesis, and weaved through the traditional systematic loci (chap. 6). Finally, the shape of his trinitarian ethical work is considered in light of the overall coherence of his body of writings, both in its early form as a Christian ethic as well as in the test-cases that were part of his engagement (chap. 7). This is followed by a summary of the reception of Grenz's project, which is deemed consistent with his aims of being both a distinctly evangelical and trinitarian theologian.

Abstract:
This thesis intends to make a contribution to the understanding of human destiny with reference to Wolfhart Pannenberg. Our research is best described as a theological anthropology in a historical perspective as opposed to Pannenberg's secular anthropology in a theological perspective. We present history as a way to map out the movement of humanity over the course of its history to its common destiny from creation (chapter 2) through sin (chapter 4) and ethics to eschatology (chapter 5). Anthropology has been taken here as only the starting point for our study, which presents openness to the world or exocentricity (chapter 3) as an anthropological constant to historicity. Chapter 2 evaluates Pannenberg's assertion, based on Herder, that the full image of God is realised not from the beginning but only through the destiny of humanity, which lies yet in the future. However, we argue that Pannenberg differentiates himself from Herder in a crucial respect in that Pannenberg grounds Herder's anthropology on a christological foundation in order to present a salvific, rather than a providential, account of the renewal of the imago Dei. Chapter 3 delineates the reasons for the original human state being characterised by openness toward one's supernatural fulfilment, which is already present as a future destiny, and corresponds to the single saving event of Jesus Christ in history. Openness to God becomes, for Pannenberg, the bridge out of the poverty of the natural beginning point of humanity into the full realisation of human destiny. The aim of chapter 4 is to argue the case for defining sin explicitly in relation to human destiny, namely, as passivity to destiny. In our sin, we are robbed of our true identity, and the separation of sinners from God means at the same time our separation from our own destiny, which is communion with God. Chapter 5 opens with a more detailed examination of eschatology, and examines the deep structure of the later Pannenberg's system of ethics, which he now explicitly argues for an anthropological foundation, with a claim of universal validity. The final chapter concludes with arguments leading to the uniting of nature, essence and destiny of humanity as one.
