Abstract:
This study shows that the historiographical understanding of the life and work of Erwin Panofsky, that most ‘famous’ of art historians, remains curiously unresolved, and that the unsatisfactory nature of this appraisal centres upon just how Panofsky’s scholarship developed after 1933, when he was forced to migrate from his home in Germany to the United States of America. Utilising Panofsky’s correspondence this study then provides a contextualised re-evaluation of Panofsky’s experience of acculturation in America, and the effect of this acculturation upon the development of his work.

Its intent is to explain the emergence of the Early Gothic cathedral: this remarkable construction type first appeared at the St-Denis abbey church, and also at Sens Cathedral, near Paris, in the middle of the twelfth century. The goal undertaken in this Bachelor´s thesis was to establish, and possibly audit, the assumed motif, provenance, dating and formal style regarding two Medieval wooden sculptures depicting Saint Martin of Tours and Saint George. Both are preserved in the art collection formerly owned by one of the great Swedish artists and art collectors of the nineteenth century: Anders Zorn (1860-1920). The purpose of the study was to account for the two sculptures using the Iconographic analysis developed by Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), and the style critical method founded by Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891).

Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att göra en jämförande analys på porträtt av Gustav II Adolf och Drottning Kristina av Sverige. Hur valde hovet och konstnärerna att gestalta en manlig och en kvinnlig regent och vilka argument förs och försvarar en kvinnlig regent. Since its publication in 1924, Erwin Panofsky's Perspective as Symbolic Form has been at the centre of debates in art history about the nature of pictorial space and its relation to lived experience.
