Abstract:
Introduction: Pansori is a traditional Korean dramatic art form, which likely appeared in the mid-eighteenth century in the southern region of Korea. In pansori, there is a strong inclination toward preserving tradition, especially in regard to training, which is generally considered particularly demanding in terms of risks to vocal health. Nevertheless —as highlighted by recent studies— some innovations took place in pansori characteristics and performances in the last few decades. Objective: We hypothesize that these innovations have impacted the attitudes of singers and teachers towards pansori training and vocal health issues, and that a new approach to voice training in pansori might be recommended. Method: Starting with recent evolutions of pansori and considering previous studies, we discuss how these changes might produce innovations —or at least a demand for innovation— in pansori’s training. We also try to capture the viewpoint of pansori students and performers, through an anonymous survey. Results: Although further investigation is required, the results suggest that a new approach in teaching pansori is emerging and it is increasingly requested by the trainee performers, despite some criticisms from traditionalists. Conclusion: Unlike previously thought, perhaps a more scientific and health-conscious approach to pansori voice training will be something from which many pansori singers can benefit.

This paper aims to examine the themes of five extant pansoris, Korean traditional music. Therefore, this study collected the lyrics of the five works, including Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Jeokbyeokga, and Sugungga. This study examined the theme of each pansori using thematic analysis of the collected data. According to the results of this study, the themes of the five works could be summarized as love, loyalty, filial piety, moderation, and Confucianism and humor. This study has the significance of deriving a common theme through thematic analysis of the lyrics of five extant pansoris.

Abstract:
In modern pansori, various experiments are being made on the existing traditional pansori, and many new creations of pansori are being made. However, traditional pansori also has historically undergone continuous changes and experiments. In this regard, this study was intended to suggest the point where the traditional pansori has changed and the tasks to be positively improved by the pansori of our time. First, the performance aspects of traditional pansori were analyzed in a visual dimension. This study examines how pansori performances have changed from the mid-19th century to modern pansori. In the 19th century, in the yard, a singer performed wearing a hat on an applicator, and held a white or red fan. The drummer used a relatively large drum, and the tip of the drumstick was round. At the end of the 19th century, in Kim Jun-geun's paintings, it can be seen that the performance space for pansori has changed into a room or an indoor space. The singer performed with the master, but did not organize a separate space, and the drum and drummer of the master was changed to a shape similar to that of modern times. In the early 20th century, the stage of pansori during the Japanese colonial period was transformed into a theater. The traditional attire of the singer and the master was sometimes simplified with a bob and a duruma. In particular, female singers changed from wearing a white hanbok with their indigo hair to gradually wearing a splendid hanbok. As the intangible cultural heritage system began after the 20th century, pansori centered on human cultural assets was mainly performed on stage under the technical influence of microphones and lighting. It can be said that the musicality of pansori has gradually become highly sophisticated amid these changes in performance space and media. While traditional pansori could be changed over time without losing its typicality, there were also parts that lost the essence of 'pan'. This is the weakening of storytelling or polarity, and in this regard, the development direction of traditional pansori was suggested in three areas. First of all, I heard that aniri(아니리) and wit should be strengthened to restore the storytelling of pansori. Next, it was argued that the spirit of the times should be contained through the creation and reconstruction of a new lyric(더늠). Finally, it was suggested that the dramatic aspect of pansori should be established through the expansion of neoreumsae(너름새) and reinforcement of acting.

Abstract:
He increasing interest to the one-actor theatre in Korea is caused by the existence of the pansori, a ballade performed by narrator to the accompaniment of a drum, in the Korean folk tradition. Nowadays, the Korean folk performance tradition is widely used by directors in contemporary monodramas. The article analyzes two performances: “The Byeoksok Fairy” (director - Sohn Jin chaek, actress - Kim Sung nuy) by Bae Sam Sik, a well-known Korean dramatist, which uses the traditions of the Korean folk performance madan nori; and the “Mother Courage and Her Children” (director - Nam In woo, actress - Yi Ja ram) by Bertolt Brecht, staged in the pansory style.

Abstract:
Pansori literature depicts various tragic situations encountered by an ordinary protagonist and their emotional reactions to it, strongly evoking empathy from ordinary people who read it. This study examines the characteristics of tragic situations in Pansori literature and discusses several discourse strategies used to manage them. The tragic situation in Pansori literature always frustrates the ordinary protagonist, and has irrational and contradictory characteristics. Furthermore, their immense emotional reaction to it intensifies the tragedy. However, Pansori literature does not leave such an emotional state unattended and includes internal discourse strategies to manage it, which is deeply related to the emotional management method of the readers. The “humorous relaxation strategy,” “moral comfort strategy,” and “precognitive alternative strategy” discussed in this paper all correspond to a kind of internal defense strategy that makes the situation less sad and painful by turning one’s eyes elsewhere in tragic situations. However, this is differentiated from simply avoiding the problem. When a good individual cannot change their life immediately on their own, it allows them to imagine an optimistic future instead of being overwhelmed by negative emotions. Management strategies of tragic situations in Pansori literature are thus significant as comfort and encouragement strategies for people and for providing ideas for the ways we live and create stories today.

Abstract:
Purpose: Considering that there is no content on pansori in the textbook of Korean, this study examined the method of teaching the pansori Jeok Byuk Ga in the Korean language subject in China. Methods: After clarifying the scope of 「Jeok Byuk Ga」 that was suitable for education, and the learning that was appropriate according to the contents, such as ‘learning about contents’ by introducing classes, ‘learning about genres’ for acquiring genre knowledge, and ‘in-depth learning’ for thinking more deeply an activity was designed. Results: In ‘learning about content’, the research revealed that teachers can proceed through an entertainment activity called ‘playing with love’, and learning about a genre can be taught by comparing it with the genre of novels that students have already learned. In the ‘deep learning’ stage, activities can be conducted on diverse topics, such as thoughts on transformation, and a comparison of novels and pansori for learning 「Jeok Byuk Ga」. Conclusion: When teaching pansori students can learn more than 「Jeok Byuk Ga」in the Korean language course, as there are many other learning activities besides those noted in this research. However, since 「Jeok Byuk Ga」is an important work noting the change of pansori, it is possible to have an opportunity to discuss the common ways of enjoying literature such as genre change, and learning 「Jeok Byuk Ga」is would be to learners.

Abstract:
This paper presents two methods to understand the rhythmic patterns of the voice in Korean traditional music called Pansori. We used semantic segmentation and classification-based structural analysis methods to segment the seven rhythmic categories of Pansori. We propose two datasets; one is for rhythm classification and one is for segmentation. Two classification and two segmentation neural networks are trained and tested in an end-to-end manner. The standard HR network and DeepLabV3+ network are used for rhythm segmentation. A modified HR network and a novel GlocalMuseNet are used for the classification of music rhythm. The GlocalMuseNet outperforms the HR network for Pansori rhythm classification. A novel segmentation model (a modified HR network) is proposed for Pansori rhythm segmentation. The results show that the DeepLabV3+ network is superior to the HR network. The classifier networks are used for time-varying rhythm classification that behaves as the segmentation using overlapping window frames in a spectral representation of audio. Semantic segmentation using the DeepLabV3+ and the HR network shows better results than the classification-based structural analysis methods used in this work; however, the annotation process is relatively time-consuming and costly.
