Abstract:
Ejaculate traits in male tigers (Panthera tigris) were studied in the 1980s, but little work has been done on male tigers since then and the reproductive status of the current zoo population is not known. In order to characterise ejaculate traits in male tigers, semen was collected by electroejaculation (90 to 100 stimulations, 3 to 7V), subjected to a standard semen analysis (volume and pH and sperm concentration, motility, and morphology), and cryopreserved. To date, semen has been collected from 24 males (n=16 Amur tigers, Panthera tigris altaica, 10.3±1.1 y; n=7 Sumatran tigers, Panthera t

Tigers in a natural life are nocturnal and preys during the dark. This study was performed to observe the effect of illumination on predatory behaviour of captive tigers. Furthermore, it was also to compare the agility of different individual, gender and age in catching their prey. The subjects were four captive tigers (N=4) in National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC), Sungkai, Perak comprising of two males and two females Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni and Panthera tigris ssp.) of different ages. The critically endangered Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni), with an estimated population of less than 200 individuals left in isolated rainforest habitats in Malaysia, is in an intermediate population crash leading to extinction in the next decade. The population has decreased significantly by illegal poaching, environmental perturbation, roadkill, and being captured during human–wildlife conflicts. Forty-five or more individuals were extracted from the wild (four animals captured due to conflict, one death due to canine distemper, one roadkilled, and 39 poached) in the 12 years betwee

The Malayan tiger (<i>Panthera tigris jacksoni</i>) is a critically endangered species native to the Malaysian Peninsula. To imitate wild conditions where tigers do not hunt every day, numerous wildlife sanctuaries do not feed their tigers daily. However, the effects of fasting on the gut microbiota of captive Malayan tigers remains unknown. This study aimed to characterise the gut microbiota of captive Malayan tigers by comparing their microbial communities during fasting versus normal feeding conditions. The Malayan tiger, or Panthera Tigris Jacksoni, was classified as a “critically endangered” species under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Red List in June 2015, with fewer than 200 Malayan tigers in the wild today. However, even though the Malayan tiger’s extinction is a serious issue, the Malaysian press still seems to pay little attention to reporting on it. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the reporting themes, primary sources, and images used in reporting the Malayan tiger issue in two selected online newspapers, New Straits Times (NST) and T
