Abstract:
The banking industry has become a substantial part of the economy. This paper traces the change in market structure and assess the level of competition among the top 10 banks of Indonesia for the period 2005-2014. Then also distinguishing between before and after the Global Financial Crisis. Utilizing the Panzar-Rosse method and panel data, we discovered that the results show an increase in the H-value from 2005-2009 to 2010-2014 and a movement towards an almost perfectly competitive environment. Interest rates drove the short response of post-crisis on the competition. Therefore governmental supervision is required to prevent liquidity issues due to the imposition of high-interest rates. Abstract:
Many believe concentrated banking industry which is dominated by few big banks creates lower competition, high profitability, and low efficiency. The main issue in empirical testing of this hypothesis is how to measure banking competition level. Traditional measures of competition are concentration ratio and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. This study uses three measures of banking level competition which are widely used in recent financial literature: Boone Indicator, Lerner Index and H-Panzar-Rosse statistics. Lerner Index and H-Panzar-Rosse statistics resulted a similar competition level conclusion, while Boone Indicator produced slightly different output. Industry concentration produced opposing results with those three level of industry competition measurement methods. The results show banking competition tend to be a monopolistic competition in ASEAN countries, especially in Indonesia which banks’ strategy basically were non-pricing strategy. Competition significantly caused lower profitability, while banking efficiency was not significantly affected by level of competition.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v6i1.4547

Abstract:
The purpose in this study is to determine and analyze the market structure of the Islamic banking industry in Indonesia according to the Panzar-Rosse model and the level of competition between Islamic banking industry in Indonesia. To find out the market structure of the islamic banking industry it must be analyzed the effect of EAR, NPF, BOPO, FAR, FS, PL, PFF, PCE on the performance of Islamic banking as measured by ROA. The data used to answer and achieve these objectives is used secondary data from Islamic banks in Indonesia which has the largest asset ratings for a period of 6 years using the selected panel data method on the basis of Tests. The analysis model related to market structure uses the Panzar-Rosse model by looking for the H-statistic value and identified the Islamic banking equilibrium test on the panel data model of the performance of bank in Indonesia. This study found that the performance of Islamic banking measured by ROA simultaneously affected EAR, NPF, BOPO, FAR and FS and Panzar-Rosse approach will produce H-Stat value which is the sum of three main coefficients ofbanking inputs (labor, capital and funds). With H-Stat valued at 0.735 can be concludedthat the islamic banking industry in indonesia into the category of monopolistic market. The levels of the Islamic banking industry of Bank BNI, Bank BRI, Bank Panin and Bank Bukopin are monopolistic market while Bank Muamalat and Bank Mandiri are directed towards a joint monopoly market in the position of long-term equilibrium.

Abstract:
Indonesia is among the few countries that adopts dual banking system where Islamic banks run in parallel and compete with conventional banks. Although under such a system banking competition would be expected to be high, data tend to show the opposite case, as three Islamics banks acquired 65 percent of market share in Indonesia. This study, therefore, attempts to determine the degree of banking competition in Indonesia by employing the Panzar-Rosse Model for 2003-2008 period. The study also analyses the competitive behaviors of Islamic banks and compares it with those of its conventional counterparts. The estimated model suggests that monopolistic competition exists in the overall banking industry—the degree is even slightly higher for Islamic banking, where the market is characterized by aggressive competition for funding, quality human resources, and financing. Such competition occurs due to, among others, small market size, low consumer base, lack of product variations, and lack of competent human resources. These should be a major concern for all Islamics banking stakeholders for developing a better Islamic banking industry, particularly in Indonesia.

Abstract:
The paper uses New Empirical Industrial Organization approach, especially Panzar-Rosse model to estimates the level of competition of the banking industry in the Czech Republic during the period 2001–2009. We apply Panzar-Rosse model to estimate H statistic for a panel of 15 banks, which represent almost 90 % of the market. This paper also measures and compares the degree of banking competition in two sub-periods, 2001–2005 and 2005–2009, in order to investigate development of the competitive structure of the Czech banking industry. We found that the market was in equilibrium during most of the estimation period, which is a necessary condition for sound evaluation of the competition level. While the market can be described as perfectly competitive in 2001–2005, the intensity of competition decreased after joining the EU in 2004 and the market can be characterized as one of monopolistic competition in 2005–2009. The monopolistic competition in the Czech banking market was also revealed if the full sample 2001–2009 is considered.

We will address the relationship between concentration and competition in the banking industry, according to the contemporary models of Industrial Organization Theory, applying the Panzar-Rosse approach, as developed by Bikker, Schaffer, and Spierdijk, with the definition of the H statistic from a non-scaled return equation. The Panzar-Rosse approach was applied on a data sample of Brazilian commercial banks data between 2011 and 2016 using an OLS e FGLS models. The database starts in 2011, when the effects of the long 2009-2010 crisis were exhausted in the national banking system. Before applying the model, the present work reviews the literature on the theme, accentuating the diversity of approaches used to establish the causal relationships between concentration and competition. The results show the clear advance of banking concentration in several relevant markets and the evidence of market power. The CR10 index evolved from 86.8% in January 2011 to 88,5% in December 2016. The Hr statistic on the non-sacaled returns, chosen as reference for the analyzed period, indicated market power.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes devolopment of profitabilty and market structure of banking sector in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. Empirical results are consistent with structure-conduct-performance hypothesis, on the other hand efficiency hypothesis seems to be unlikely. These conclusions are furthermore supported by DEA efficiency analysis. Results of non-structural Panzer-Rosse model suggest that during the period under consideration, market outcome was similar to monopolistic competiton. The results of regression analysis reveal that bank-specific variables, share of banking deposits on GDP, GDP growth and interest rates are the main drivers of banking sector profitability.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Economia Monetária e Financeira
The purpose of the present article is to assess the degree of competition within the enlarged European Union (EU) commercial banking system during the period ranging from 2004 to 2011 using the non-structural test developed by Panzar and Rosse (1987). Their procedure measures the competitive environment in which financial intermediaries operate employing the sum of the elasticities of the reduced-form interest revenue with respect to factor prices. The main conclusion to retain from this study is that banking industry in the region does not seem to have operated either under perfect competition or under perfect monopoly, but rather consistently with long-run monopolistic competition. Further, we also find empirical evidence of efficiency hypothesis posted by Demestz (1973) and Peltzman (1977), as opposed to conventional view that concentration impairs price competitiveness. Finally, we underline the importance of trade off between the costs and benefits of competition to support financial stability objectives.

The South African banking industry is relatively sound and adequately capitalized high-tech service industry. It provides services to 51% of the economically active population. In the late 2001, 2002 and,2003, a number of small banks failed·due to liquidity crises, which subsequently spurred the momentum of consolidation in the industry. During this period, a great deal of mergers and acquisitions has taken place in the industry. The regulatory environment is in line with the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) guidelines. The regulations regarding foreign banks are evidently a barrier to foreign bank entry, which could spur the level of competition in the industry In this thesis the level of market concentration is calculated using concentration ratios, CR. and CRs, for four product markets. The concentration ratio R. ranges from 77% for investment products, 79% for deposit market, 89% for installment sales market to 95% for credit card markets. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (RH!) as calculated by reserve bank is 1750 by the end of year 2002, compared with the thresholds set by American Department of Justice; this falls short by only 50 from the range of the highly concentrated markets, which is above 1800 points. The methodology used to test competition, one of the new empirical industrial organization models, is the Panzar-Rosse reduced form revenue function. The P-R reduced form revenue function estimates the competitive conduct by the extent to which changes in factor price is reflected in revenue. The reduced form revenue function is estimated based on unbalanced panel of 15 banks for the period of 1993 to 2002 using fixed effects panel data econometrics. The estimated H-statistic is 0.516,

This present study examined the extent to which the market structure of the Brazilian banking industry - at levels of concentration and competition - affects the risk appetite of its agents. Thus, we examined the relationship between concentration indicators (C3 and HHI), competition (H-statistic) and risk (NPL, Z-score) for the period comprehended between 2001 and 2013. The relationship between non-performing loans (NPL), concentration and competition was empirically tested using panel data models. The results indicates that bank concentration has a significant impact on the NPL, suggesting that more concentrated systems are more fragile. On the other hand, the results for competition and NPL indicates that a more competitive environment may generate a more stable financial system.

This study focuses on the Americas banking industry, we utilize the Panzer and Rosse model (P-R model) to measure the competitive environment of banking industry in 3 regions in the Americas and 16 countries during the period of 2004-2009. We first find out the Americas banking industries operate in monopolistic competition. However, the 2008 financial crisis occurred during the observation period. The sub-periods for North America and South America have a little bit change in the degree of competition, but has the significant increase in competition environment in Central America. It indeed shows that the financial crisis makes more competitive banking market in Central America. As for the competition environment of the banking industry of a single country, the result shows that all countries are monopolistic competition in North America while most countries in Central and South America are perfect competition. Finally, we focus on four major American countries to compare the differences between structural indicator (CR4, HHI) and non-structural indicator (H-statistic). Therefore, the structural indicator and the non-structural indicator are inconsistent in this study.

Abstract:
The paper estimates the level of competition of the banking industry in the Czech Republic during the period 2000-2008. We apply Panzar-Rosse model on data from banks comprising almost 90% of the market. We found that the market was alternately in equilibrium and disequilibrium, which demonstrates a dynamic development of the Czech banking sector. While the market can be described as perfectly competitive during the period 2000-2004, the intensity of competition decreased after joining the EU in 2004 and the market can be characterized as one of monopolistic competition in 2004-2008.
