Video games are often thought of as a type of social media, yet social media are not often thought of as a type of video game. Due to the fact that both are media that arguably play a large role in identity formation and perception of reality, this paper argues that social media should be looked at as providing a type of video game experience. While the study is not limited in its scope to teens, they play an important role. This paper explores identity as being social and interactive and also affected by media. The relationship between representation and reality is also explored and applied to the current celebrity culture. Social media and video games are explored through their similarities, including their goals of becoming a hero/celebrity, exemplified in social media through users acting like their own paparazzi. A systematic analysis is conducted to compare research regarding identity and reality in social media and video games since 2005. While similar themes emerged, the way that these themes are studied within video games and social media differ. These gaps in research lead me to four new research area suggestions for social media: mirrors, stereotypes, immersion and definitions. Through these new research areas, I propose five possible future studies.

Full textAlthough the paparazzi is the poor relation in the history of photography, it is a precious source of inspiration for cinematographic and televisual fictions. Already a character before appearing on screen, the paparazzi establishes a tension, both narrative and visual, that encourages an exploration of its forms of representation. Supported by a collection of films and western television series, from 1940 to 2008, this work will identify and analyze the reoccuring ways in which the paparazzi is represented, from a socio-historical and cultural perspective. Seducer, savior… hunter, thief ? Returning to the imaginary world which surrounds the camera and the hybrid quality of its use allows one to understand how theimage of a « bad » photographer is built. Anonymous croud or main character in the story, half-animal, half-machine, the different faces of the paparazzi on screen both enlighten and threaten the star’s humanity. At a time when the chance of reaching celebrity status are as high as the odds of « acting like a paparazzi », works of fiction reveal a struggle to the deathin which each party fights for a new absolute value : visibility

As citizen journalism platform of PeoPo seems losing popularity, the development of citizen journalism in Taiwan should find itself another way. With the growth of mobile devices, the video sharing websites, like YouTube, increases the variety of live videos. Under such circumstances, are people becoming more like reporters or paparazzis? The study inquires into the relationship between video sharing website and citizen journalism, especially taking live video on YouTube as example. By conducting in-depth interview with 4 live-video uploaders, 2 PeoPo citizen journalists and 2 citizen journalism scholars, supplemented by secondary analysis, we discover the norm to prevent paparazzi disaster and some evidences about citizen journalism. This research proves video sharing website can take citizen journalism to the next level, based on the following four reasons: first, YouTube is a mainstream website with the power of influence. Second, the motivation of live video uploader includes "seeking justice” as well as "self-help ". Third, there is an emergence of internet norms of defending injustice. Finally, video sharing website is a broad definition of citizen journalism. The study shows that web 2.0 really inspires people to have the right to report news. As upcoming the era of web 3.0, the study considers that presentation of citizen journalism is not only just in-depth reporting, but also a photo, a piece of video or a simple narrative all can regard as news.
