Weight reduction in automotive and aerospace components can improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and increase performance. The adoption of light metals such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys, is essential to these performance improvements; however, these alloys require protective surface coatings to prevent corrosion and resulting mechanical failures during service life. Traditional protective coatings for light-weight materials can be costly in terms of energy, raw materials, and environmental sustainability. AbstractChallenge on energy resources exists, especially when the fossil resources are limited. Fuel cells, as an alternative replacement, can be used. Fuel cells with coated bipolar plates are the interest of this paper. Current research is concerned with the effects of CrN/TiN coatings on interfacial contact resistance (ICR). Stainless steel 410 was selected as a base metal, and the coating process was performed using chromium nitride and titanium nitride by cathodic arc evaporation method. It was found that the surface roughness and ICR values of CrN-coated sample are lower than the TiN-coated sample. The concluded that the CrN layer could be replaced with the TiN layer for better performance of bipolar plates.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper aims at experimental investigations of the life limiting mechanisms of regeneratively cooled rocket combustion chambers, especially the so called doghouse effect. In this paper the set up of a cyclic thermo-mechanical fatigue experiment and its results are shown. This experiment has an actively cooled fatigue specimen that is mounted downstream of a subscale GOX-GCH$$_{\text {4}}$$ combustion chamber with rectangular cross section. The specimen is loaded cyclically and inspected after each cycle. The effects of roughness, the use of thermal barrier coatings, the length of the hot gas phase, the oxygen/fuel ratio and the hot gas pressure are shown. In a second experiment the flow in a generic high aspect ratio cooling duct is measured with the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to characterize the basic flow. The main focus of the analysis is on the different recording and processing parameters of the PIV method. Based on this analysis a laser pulse interval and the window size for auto correlation is chosen. Also the repeatability of the measurements is demonstrated. These results are the starting point for future measurements on the roughness effect on heat transfer and pressure loss in a high aspect ratio cooling duct.

AbstractThis paper investigates the role technology and materials play in making meaningful connections between people, architectural space and the workplace. It indicates that design can synergize with responsive technology and material systems to leverage new power for future workplace interaction design. We have created a spatial prototype paired with a series of simulations that act as a proposal to stimulate workplace interaction. The project employs a responsive ceiling that combines a fluid computational pattern with temperature-responsive bi-material laminates with thermochromic coatings and electrically programmed micro-controllers. The project is then connected to a computer code that computes readings based upon ongoing interactions with humans wearing body sensors. The methodology categorizes the simulation results into aroused states and calm states. As the computational patterns and colors change, we are made aware of the relationships between space, technology, and the human sensorium. This conversation brings insight into how we can design more effectively for workplace interactions.

A common approach to improve the lubrication has been first to increase the viscosity and create thicker films, which, in turn, reduce the amount of surface asperity interaction.
