The primary photochemical processes of lignin-rich high-yield thermomechanical pulp (TMP) have been investigated with a view to understanding and ultimately preventing the yellowing (photoreversion) of such paper upon exposure to sunlight. Paper is renewable, recyclable, sustainable and biodegradable material and, as a result, paper-based materials are widely used in the world packaging market. However, paper-based materials cannot compete with plastics in terms of processability into various 3D shapes. This is due to poor formability of paper, which is closely associated with its toughness. To improve paper formability, we report on a facile and green method that combines fiber and paper mechanical modifications at different structural levels as well as biopolymer treatment via spraying. Abstract:
In recent years, major efforts have been made to develop a more circular economy. The desire to reuse, remanufacture and recycle materials are important for the development towards a sustainable society. An extended lifespan of materials helps to reduce the amount of waste kept in landfills, as well as to reduce the extraction of natural resources. Pulp and paper and steel industries are two of the largest export industrial sectors in Sweden. It is well known that the pulp and paper industries also generates large amounts of organic and inorganic wastes, of which a significant part is kept in

Doutoramento em Ciências e Engenharia do Ambiente<br>This thesis reports in detail studies of industrial solid wastes valorization as alternative raw materials. All tested wastes are classified as non-hazardous and are generated in the pulp and paper process, including primary sludge, dregs, grits, lime mud and bottom ash (this generated in a process that occurs in parallel to the production of cellulose, whose aim is the production of energy to supply the plant through the combustion of forest biomass in fluidized bed). A detailed general characterization was performed at each waste an

Bio and nano technologies are absent or incipient in papermaking industry and, concretely, in recycling and high-yield pulps sectors. In this sense, the present Thesis uses cellulose nanofibers (CNF), both in bulk and on surface, for physicomechanical properties enhancement of both recycled papers and of those made from high-yield fibers. Moreover, in order to reach even higher physicomechanical properties, the synergetic action between CNF and enzymatic refining was investigated. Recycling through mechanical refinement was found to produce papers with similar properties than the original ones

The studies in the present thesis explored the feasibility of using nanocellulose-based filters in virus removal filtration of plasma-derived proteins.   In Paper I, two-step nanofiltration of commercially available human serum albumin (HSA) product, which was diluted to 10 g L-1 by phosphate buffer saline (PBS) and adjusted pH to 7.4, was performed to remove soluble protein aggregates and reduce filter fouling. The two-step filtration of HSA employed nanocellulose-based filters of varying thickness, i.e. 11 μm and 22 μm filters.  The removal of HSA aggregates during filtration through 11 μm p

Paper and pulp industry and steel industry are two major industries in Sweden, both of which are facing big challenges to treat their waste products properly. In this thesis work, initial evaluation of mechanical properties of briquettes made of waste products was performed. Three different CaO-containing waste products (Mesa, Kalk, Fly Ash) from Stora Enso and SCA were pressed with one kind of binding material (AOD slag) from Outokumpu. Drop tests were carried out to test the impact strength of the lab-made briquettes. Three different parameters were investigated of their influence on the imp

Paper (and other cellulose-based materials such as cotton thread and fabrics) are underexploited as materials for the construction of “high-tech” and “lab-on-a-chip” devices. One major drawback of paper is its tendency to absorb water from the environment and, with wetting, to change its mechanical properties; other challenges relate to control over the attachment of molecules (e.g. antibodies, DNA) and cells on its surface, and to the addition of electronic function. The goal of this thesis is to develop paper as a substrate for a range of applications— microfluidics, substrates for electroni
