Abstract:
In our information age, it is of the highest importance that information is easy to understand by as many members of the potential target audience as possible. The present study analyses and compares the readability of 20 newspaper articles, half from the tabloid Daily Mail and the other half from the broadsheet The Daily Telegraph. The methods used to analyse the articles are mathematic readability formulas based on sentence and word length, as well as analyses of the use of the active and the passive voice, type-token ratio, number of clauses per sentence, and linking words. The results do not completely align with each other. Three of the five methods – the readability formulas, the use of the passive voice, and clauses per sentence – suggest that the Daily Mail articles are easier to understand, whereas the type-token ratios imply the opposite, and the linking words results did not show a difference in readability.

This study addresses the effects of Co-60 gamma radiation on paper. Seven books of registry office archives from 21 century, recovered from flood and that presented biological infestation were selected as samples to investigate the irradiation used as fungal infection treatment. Starting with the identification of the main fungi genera present in the material to determine the doses employed, some of the radiation effects on paper properties were studied as well as on mud and fungus stains. The gamma radiation doses compatible with the possibility of repeated treatment were also observed, because treated collections are not immune to new infestations by microorganisms and the doses are cumulative. It is important to consider the dose limit which documentary and bibliographic material could support without damages in case of a new irradiation treatment.

Protected Areas are the main strategy to protected biodiversity. Protected Areas are not equal and vary in their management objectives and level of human occupation. Brazil has 12 protected area's categories. Among those, "Environment Protected Area" (EPA, Category V in IUCN Classification), is the one with least restriction to human activity. This category has many critics, that argue EPAs should not be account as Protected Areas, as has defenders who argue that EPA belong to a ?New Paradigm? of Protected Areas, aimed to reconcile biodiversity conservation and human development. EPAs has special importance because it covers a third of the protected land, and more than 60% on biomes such as Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Caatinga and Pampa, and more than 80% of all marine protected areas in Brazil. Therefore, understand the implementation, land cover and management patterns is crucial for Brazilian biodiversity conservation. We find lower levels of human activity within EPAs when compared with biome and in areas without protection (protected areas and indigenous areas) within biome. Nonetheless, we found about 7 million people live inside EPA and that in 2016, Amazon biome was the only biome with more than 50% of forest land cover. We find that if we do not account for the area with anthropogenic use inside EPA, the total area covered by protected area in Brazil would go from 17,6% to 12,8%. We also found that only 18% of EPA had a "management plan" and 45% had a "management council". Lastly, we recommend starting a discussion about specific management and support mechanism to the EPA category.

GPS is a radio navigation system base on a satellite network providing 24 hours radio data to determine point coordinates and world wide coverage. The precision is in the decametric range which is not adequate to many applications. DGPS or Differential GPS is a technique used to improve this precision down to metric level adding informa-tion to the receiver. The GPS receiver can receive the information from geostationary satellites or radio links. This work presents a DGPS system with local radio link to support urban applications based on the low price pager Motorola Creatalink, operating in 931 MHz band. A pilot project was developed at the Engineering School of Sao Carlos (EESC) with the Refer-ence Station at the roof of Electrical Engineering Department. The results show a good improvement in the precision of the coordinates, presenting a high potential usage in medium size cities.

Brazil is a major producer of paper, highlighted worldwide for producing and supplying the markets with large volumes of paper packaging, printing and writing paper and cardboard. Although the wood is the main source of raw material used in cellulose industries in Brazil, the use of non-timber fiber may be a satisfactory alternative for manufacturing of papers with different and special properties. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity, morphology, anatomy and chemical composition of the fibers, as well as the properties of the pulps produced papers of Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) Soják (popularly known as reed), pure or mixed with eucalyptus pulp. We conducted chemical, morphological and productivity analysis. Thus the kraft pulping process and production roles in different treatments were performed. Through research and analysis, it can be noted that reed had low productivity and short fibers. Chemical analysis showed that the fibers have a high level of the reed extractives and silica, which makes it a favorable raw material for pulp production, on the other hand, the kraft pulping process resulted in reed pulp with low contents of hexenuronic acid suitable for the bleaching of pulp factor. The strength properties of the papers were negatively affected by the addition of reed pulp papers and the highest values of bulk and opacity were achieved with the lowest levels of refining of the pulps. It was concluded that reed did not show satisfactory for the production of papers of high strength characteristics.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper is concerned with how the spatial distribution of written informings in a serious game activity at an interactive tabletop (ITT) induces participants to read aloud interactionally relevant information to each other in the process of co-constructing a shared understanding. Engaging in an unfamiliar game activity, the participants are all equally dependent on written informings from the interface that serve as a game manual and provide crucial information for jointly achieving the game task(s). When it comes to making use of these written informings, we find the participants to read them aloud, making them accountable within the group. Our findings from multimodal video analysis of two reading-aloud cases suggest that the written informing’s directionality and distribution (here, either designed as ‘distributed’ or ‘shared’ among the interface) regulate the participants’ access to information. And that participants who cannot visually access the information they are interested in reading (aloud) co-organize fine-grained joint successive actions build on and actualized by read-aloud utterances. These joint actions allow them to align their orientation and share their understanding of game activity-relevant content.

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungThe paper explores the multi-stage process of translation that enabled German writer Johann Michael Moscherosch to refer to the perusal of Elizabeth Jocelyn’s conduct book The Mothers Legacy to her Vnborn Childe as one of the main factors in his decision to write his own devotional book, Insomnis Cura Parentum (1643). It is argued that Moscherosch himself did not translate The Mothers Legacy from the French, but rather read it in an already existing German translation based on a French version. In addition to tracing back the ways in which The Mothers Legacy, as a result of small changes in both translations, became more compatible with the Strasbourg-specific rendition of Lutheranism that largely shaped Moscherosch’s religious views and therefore his parenting, the paper aims to show how aspects of religious confession, regional politics, and the book trade were crucial in the reception of seventeeth-century devotional writing.

To obtain good precision, data flow analysis needs to somehow skip execution paths that read more messages than the number of messages sent so far in the path, as such paths are infeasible at run time. Existing data flow analysis techniques do elide a subset of such infeasible paths, but have the restriction that they admit only finite abstract analysis domains. In this paper we propose a generalization of these approaches to admit infinite abstract analysis domains, as such domains are commonly used in practice to obtain high precision. We have implemented our approach, and have analyzed its performance on a set of 14 benchmarks. On these benchmarks our tool obtains significantly higher precision compared to a baseline approach that does not elide any infeasible paths and to another baseline that elides infeasible paths but admits only finite abstract domains.

Abstract:
This study is using the multiple relaxation time Lattice Boltzmann method to calculate the permeability of carbon fiber paper and carbon fiber cloth gas diffusion layers (GDL). The 3D gas diffusion layers are generated by X-ray computed tomography, This method involve generation of 3D digital model of gas diffusion layers acquired through X-ray micro-tomography at resolution of a few micros. The reconstructed 3D images were then read into the LBM model to calculate the anisotropic permeability of carbon fiber paper and carbon fiber cloth GDL. We investigated the relationships between the anisotropic permeability and porosity and compare the difference between the two different kinds of GDLs when they have the similar porosity. We also calculate the permeability with different viscosity and compare the two results from the carbon fiber paper and carbon fiber cloth. It is useful for selection of materials for high performance gas diffusion media and can improve the performance of the fuel cells.

Abstract:
The performance and reliability of the GMR heads are adversely affected by self-heating due to the aggressive scaling of its dimensions to increase areal density. In this manuscript, the self-heating of the GMR head during the normal operation is investigated. An analytical model is developed to estimate the temperature rise in the GMR sensor due to self-heating for magnetic recording areal densities from 2.8 to 80 Gbits/in2, which agrees well with the FEM simulations. This model is subsequently used to investigate the influence of the GMR head constituent materials’ thermal properties on the device temperature rise. A 3-D finite element analysis was also performed to predict the level of self-heating in lead-overlaid (LOL) design, which agrees well with the experimental data obtained using steady-state and transient measurements. This paper was also originally published as part of the Proceedings of the ASME 2005 Pacific Rim Technical Conference and Exhibition on Integration and Packaging of MEMS, NEMS, and Electronic Systems.

Abstract:
A critical component of the learning process lies in the feedback that students receive on their work that validates their progress, identifies flaws in their thinking, and identifies skills that still need to be learned. Many higher-education institutions have developed an active pedagogy that gives students opportunities for different forms of assessment and feedback. This means that students have numerous lab exercises, assignments, and projects. Both instructors and students thus require effective tools to efficiently manage the submission, assessment, and individualized feedback of students’ work. The open-source web application MarkUs aims at meeting these needs: it facilitates the submission and assessment of students’ work. Students directly submit their work using MarkUs, rather than printing it, or sending it by email. The instructors or teaching assistants use MarkUs’s interface to view the students’ work, annotate it, and fill in a marking rubric. Students use the same interface to read the annotations and learn from the assessment. Managing the students’ submissions and the instructors assessments within a single online system, has led to several positive pedagogical outcomes: the number of late submissions has decreased, the assessment time has been drastically reduced, students can access their results and read the instructor’s feedback immediately after the grading process is completed. Using MarkUs has also significantly reduced the time that instructors spend collecting assignments, creating the marking schemes, passing them on to graders, handling special cases, and returning work to the students. In this paper, we introduce MarkUs’ features, and illustrate their benefits for higher education through our own teaching experiences and that of our colleagues. We also describe an important benefit of the fact that the tool itself is open-source. MarkUs has been developed entirely by students giving them a valuable learning opportunity as they work on a large software system that real users depend on. Virtuous circles indeed arise, with former users of MarkUs becoming developers and then supervisors of further development. We will conclude by drawing perspectives about forthcoming features and use, both technically and pedagogically.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a study of the effect of antiferromagnetic (AFM) integration on the nano AFM-pinned multiferroic (MF) composites structure. The nano MF composites structure is a potential candidate for a future magnetic read head. The simulation of the AFM/ferromagnetic (FM) bilayers characteristics and the evaluation of the magnetoelectric (ME) effect induced in the 1-dimensional (1D) L-T mode model of AFM-pinned structure of AFM/FM/Ferroelectric (FE)/FM/AFM are performed. FM, FE, and two types of AFM materials are Terfenol-D, lead zirconate titanate (PZT), and PtMn and Cr2O3, respectively. The magnetoelectric (ME) effect is investigated using the 1D standard square law. Magnetic-field induced strain in the FM layer, piezoelectric response of the PZT layer, and the ME coefficient are determined. Specifically, the influence of AFM on the MF composites structure for various AFM thicknesses is of interest. It is found that the maximum electric field and potential across the PZT layer are achieved at 2.7 nm thick of PtMn. The result is well agreed by associated magnetic field-induced strain and ME coefficient.

Working Paper Series: Therapeutic Communities in Brazil. Edited by Taniele Rui and Fiore Mauricio. Abstract:
Spread across Brazil and attaining an unparalleled political force, therapeutic communities are as inescapable in the debate on drug policy as they are complex to define. Although they are not a Brazilian creation, they have been operating in that country for decades, and their dissemination intensified in the 1990s. In 2011, they were officially incorporated into Brazil's Psychosocial Care Network (Rede de Atenção Psicossocial, or RAPS). Since then, therapeutic communities have been at the center of public debates about their regulation; about how they should—or even if they should—be a part of the healthcare system; about the level of supervision to which they should be submitted; about their sources of funding, particularly whether or not they should have access to public funding; and, most importantly, about the quality of the services they offer and the many reports of rights violation that have been made public. However, a well-informed public debate can only flourish if the available information is based on sound evidence. The SSRC’s Drugs, Security and Democracy Program is concerned with the policy relevance of the research projects it supports, and the debate around therapeutic communities in Brazil points to a clear need for impartial research that addresses different cross-cutting aspects of this topic in its various dimensions: legal, regulatory, health, and observance of human rights, among others. It is in this context that we publish this working paper series on therapeutic communities in Brazil. The eight articles that compose this series offer a multidisciplinary view of the topic, expanding and deepening the existing literature and offering powerful contributions to a substantive analysis of therapeutic communities as instruments of public policy. Although they can be read separately, it is as a whole that the strength of the eight articles that make up this series becomes more evident. Even though they offer different perspectives, they are complementary works in—and already essential for—delineating and understanding the phenomenon of therapeutic communities in Brazil.

Abstract:
Access to books is key to learning to read and sustaining a love of reading. Yet many low- and middle-income countries struggle to provide their students with reading materials of sufficient quality and quantity. Since 2008, RTI International has provided technical assistance in early reading assessment and instruction to ministries of education in dozens of low- and middle-income countries. The central objective of many of these programs has been to improve learning outcomes—in particular, reading—for students in the early grades of primary school. Under these programs, RTI has partnered with ministry staff to produce and distribute evidence-based instructional materials at a regional or national scale, in quantities that increase the likelihood that children will have ample opportunities to practice reading skills, and at a cost that can be sustained in the long term by the education system. In this paper, we seek to capture the practices RTI has developed and refined over the last decade, particularly in response to the challenges inherent in contexts with high linguistic diversity and low operational capacity for producing and distributing instructional materials. These practices constitute our approach to developing and producing instructional materials for early grade literacy. We also touch upon effective planning for printing and distribution procurement, but we do not consider the printing and distribution processes in depth in this paper. We expect this volume will be useful for donors, policymakers, and practitioners interested in improving access to cost-effective, high-quality teaching and learning materials for the early grades.
