Abstract:
Sue Barton is the fictional redhaired nursing heroine of a series of novels written for young women. Recalled by several generations of women readers with affection, Sue Barton has remained in print ever since the publication of the first novel in the series: Sue Barton, Student Nurse, written by Helen Dore Boylston, was published in America in 1936. Neither the covers of her four novels now in paperback, nor the publisher's catalogue entry, however, acknowledge Sue Barton's age: “Sue Barton Series – The everyday stories of redheaded Sue Barton and hospital life as she progresses from being a student nurse through her varied nursing career.”The catalogue entry for the series and the novels' paperback covers now claim Sue Barton as a contemporary young woman, poised for romance. Sue is, however, a pre-war heroine, and very much located within an American history and tradition of nursing. With her close contemporary, Cherry Ames, Sue Barton is one of the nursing heroines who were to establish a genre in popular fiction for young women, the career novel, and, more particularly, the nursing career novel.

Abstract:
One early spring afternoon in 1982 I happened to find myself ambling along Fuzhou Road in Shanghai and coming by chance upon a small unattractive bookstore. The brown paint on its outer doors was peeling, the stucco surface of its exterior needed a good scrubbing, and more than a few tiles on its floor were broken. If then no different in appearance from the other bookstores I had earlier visited along this famous Shanghai book street, this store nonetheless boasted a strikingly different kind of stock: it specialized in selling second-hand Western books. While novels abounded on its shelves, the pre-war variety in hardback and the more recent in paperback, one thick non-fiction volume caught my eye. Entitled Domesday Book and Beyond, this classic 1887 treatment of early English history by the great English legal historian Frederic W. Maitland had long been on my reading list. Somehow a copy of it had ended up in this unpromising bookshop. When I opened the virtually virgin pages of this copy and noticed that it could be bought for a proverbial song, I readily leapt to the temptation and acquired it with delight.

Reid, Peter H. "The Peace Corps Book Locker." In Every Hill a Burial Place. University Press of Kentucky, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5810/kentucky/9780813179988.003.0025.

Full text
Abstract:
Each Peace Corps volunteer received a large, hinged box made of strong cardboard. This Book Locker was filled with paperback books for the volunteer to read and to pass along to students, villagers, and others. When the box was open, it had shelves and became a bookcase. The lockers contained novels, nonfiction books, reference books, maps, materials to learn English, and books about the region. Bill’s “diary,” which the prosecution argues demonstrated a motive for the alleged murder, is revealed to contain only quotations from Ceremony in Lone Tree, a book included in the Book Locker. The book was written by Wright Morris, a popular author of spare, midwestern stories, one of which brought him the National Book Award.

Full text
Abstract:
Tolstoy is the one writer who McGahern directly attempted to rewrite or adapt via his play The Power of Darkness. The play was received negatively for the most part, but McGahern persisted in trying to perfect it. This chapter asks why McGahern remained so committed to Tolstoy and suggests that the two writers have in common a similar approach to the centrality of religious belief for the artist. Alongside McGahern’s one play, it focusses most on his novel The Dark and how it was influenced by Tolstoy’s last novel, Resurrection.
