Abstract:
SUMMARY Objective To evaluate the function of the outer retina in Papillons with and without hereditary retinal degeneration. Animals 45 Papillons, median age 1.7 (range, 0.8 to 5.1) years. Procedure Complete physical and ophthalmic examinations were done prior to performing electroretinography under general anesthesia. Full-field electroretinograms (ERG) were recorded, using a special-purpose computer system. Eleven specific ERG responses were recorded, graphed, and evaluated, using age-matched Papillons. Results Severely decreased retinal function was detected in 8 Papillons. The youngest affected dog was 1.2 years old. In affected dogs, amplitudes of responses mainly originating from the rod system were severely decreased, compared with those originating from the cone system. Conclusions Papillons represent another breed of dog affected by a hereditary photoreceptor degeneration that can be detected at an early age by using ERG. A reliable age for diagnosis using ERG is considered to be 1.5 years. Clinical Relevance Thorough and precise ERG procedures and protocols are needed to reliably obtain an early diagnosis of progressive retinal atrophy. (Am J Vet Res 1998;59:221–226)

Abstract:
Results of butterflies sampled as by-catch in Malaise traps deployed in indigenous forests at Parc National de Nouabalé-Ndoki, Republic of Congo are presented. Using traps deployed with cyanide as a killing agent, rather than the standard ethanol, 153 species of butterfly belonging to five families were sampled, which constituted nearly one-third of the butterfly species known from the Park, with numerous species not encountered during general collecting. The benefits and drawbacks of using this technique, as well as the potential for these traps to be used as part of future butterfly inventories are discussed.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the orchestral and choreographic versions of the play “Papillons” from R. Schumann’s piano cycle “Carnaval”. The features of N. Tcherepnin’s orchestration are considered. While maintaining the basic elements of the structure, the tonal-harmonic plan, the texture of the piece, Tcherepnin’s orchestration demonstrates free handling of registers and various orchestral writing techniques. Colorful orchestration brings freshness and novelty to Schumann’s music, helping to embody the plastic image of the Butterfly in Fokine’s one-act ballet “Carnaval”. The plot continuation of the scene “Butterfly and Pierrot” was the subsequent one-act ballet “Les Papillons” by Fokine to the music of the cycle of the same name by Schumann, orchestrated by Tcherepnin.

Abstract:
The caterpillars of Pectinophora. gossypiella and Thaumatotibia. leucotreta are among the major pests of cotton. They develop inside the bolls and cause enormous losses in the cotton crop by reducing the quantity and quality of seed cotton. To this effect, the attacks are unpredictable and difficult to detect by the producers. The study was carried out to find an efficient pheromone trap model for the parasitic surveillance of P. gossypiella and T. leucotreta moths in order to detect later the outbreak periods for a better management of these pests. Indeed, three types of traps were used including a local trap, a delta trap and a funel trap. The traps were placed in untreated cotton plots at the research station of the Centre National de Recherche Agronomique sur la culture de coton in Bouaké. The collection of moths captured by the different traps was done three times a week. Also a sanitary analysis of the green bolls was carried out to establish a link between the caterpillars and the moths captured. The local trap captured more moths (1.4 moths/week) than the delta (0.2 moths/week) and funel (0.4 moths/week) traps. In addition, the local trap associated with the pheromone distributed by the company Bio-system was more attractive than the other pheromones provided by the companies Rusell IPM and Amity Bio-organics. In addition, the numbers of male moths captured were not dependent on the numbers of caterpillars present in the bolls. The type of local trap associated with the pheromone provided by Bio-system is a good trapping model useful in the pest surveillance of P.gossypiella and T. leucotreta pests of cotton.

Abstract:
Developmental anomalies are an important cause of stillbirth and early perinatal death in companion animals. Many of these disorders remain poorly understood and provide an opportunity as a spontaneous animal model for human disease. Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital syndrome described in human neonates. It is a ventral midline closure defect with a proposed familial inheritance in humans. This syndrome involves five defects, including the thoracoabdominal wall, sternal, diaphragmatic, pericardial and cardiac malformations. Diverse expressions of these defects have been described in humans and sporadically in domestic animals. This severe syndrome commonly harbors a poor prognosis, posing an ethical and surgical dilemma. To better understand this syndrome and its presentation in dogs, we describe two rare cases of Pentalogy of Cantrell in a litter of papillon dogs. The affected puppies had anomalies compatible with the Pentalogy of Cantrell, including thoracoabdominal schisis, ectopia cordis, sternal cleft, pericardial agenesis, and diaphragmatic defects. The diagnosis was confirmed by advanced imaging (computed tomography) and postmortem examinations. The family history of this litter was explored and other cases in domestic animals were reviewed. This is the first report of the complete Pentalogy of Cantrell with ectopia cordis in the dog and the only report on papillons. Similar to human cases, possible familial inheritance and suspected male gender bias were observed. Further research on this novel animal model, its pathogenesis and its hereditary basis, may be helpful in better understanding this rare developmental disorder.

Abstract:
The theoretic model of the “unreliable narrative” in fiction took flight in the early 1960s; it has since become a key concept in narratology, and an indispensable one. Simply put, first-person unreliable narrators are ones about whom we as readers, in collusion with the author, learn more than they know about themselves. Romantic precursors of modernist experiments in fiction—incipient cases of narrative unreliability—arise in the works of, among others, Jean Paul Richter and Heinrich Heine, two of Robert Schumann's favorite writers. In his early solo piano cycle, Papillons, op. 2, Schumann draws inspiration from Jean Paul's novel Flegeljahre, surely capturing something of the author's unreliably quirky literary style, in part through the strategy of tonal pairing. Whereas Schumann ultimately played down the programmatic elements of Papillons that trace back to the unpredictable Jean Paul, a genuine instance of the unreliable narrator is Heine's troubled poet-persona in Schumann's Dichterliebe. Here the composer invites us to perceive a second persona through the voice of the piano—one that understands the poet better than he does, and whose music reveals from the outset that rejection in love lies ahead. The emergence of narrative unreliability in fiction may have served as an influence that drove experimentation not only for Schumann but also for some of his contemporaries and successors. Debates about musical narrativity might profit from considering the recent literary concept of a “feedback loop,” in which the author, the narrator (text), and the narratee (reader)—in our case, the composer, the performer, and the listener (including analysts, performers, and composers, who are also intensive listeners)—continually and recursively interact.

Papillomas of the sinonasal tract are uncommon tumors. They can be subdivided into different histopathological entities including inverting papilloma, fungiform papilloma and cylindrical cell papilloma. Cylindrical cell papilloma is one of the rarest with only twenty-three cases reported. This rare histologically distinct variant of papillomas of the sinonasal tract behaves clinically like inverting papillomas. We present what we believe to be the first reported case of a cylindrical cell papilloma isolated to the nasal septum. The patient's pathology and a literature review of cylindrical cell papillomas of the sinonasal tract are presented.

Abstract Before the 1931 Colonial Exposition and throughout its six-month run, Vietnamese militants in metropolitan France led an extensive anti-imperialist campaign with the exposition as their focal point. Political ephemera was their primary weapon in the war that erupted between activists who disseminated anti-imperialist texts, the newly-arrived immigrants they sought to recruit, and colonial administrators. This article investigates the role that gender played in the relationship between these groups of men by asking: How did normative ideas related to masculinity and race shape the strategies for the production and dissemination of activist texts? To answer this question, I analyze tracts and papillons, arguing that when Vietnamese militants protested the exposition, they contested dominant visions of masculinity that lay at the heart of the French imperial project.

AbstractObjective:This study reports a case of a sinonasal inverted papilloma with spread to the temporal bone via the eustachian tube and subsequent transformation to squamous cell carcinoma.Method:An 81-year-old woman presented with sinonasal inverted papilloma which subsequently spread to the ear. A literature review of inverted papilloma was carried out based on a Pubmed search of studies published between 1987 and 2011, using the key words ‘sinonasal inverted papilloma’, ‘temporal bone inverted papilloma’ and ‘squamous cell carcinoma’.Results and conclusion:Sinonasal and temporal bone inverted papillomas may sometimes be linked through direct spread via the eustachian tube. Inverted papillomas have the potential for malignant transformation; careful monitoring of both the nose and ear is therefore required for inverted papillomas found in the nasopharynx.

Abstract:
Solitary intraductal papilloma of the breast is a common benign mammary proliferative disease and is the most common neoplasm associated with nipple discharge in women. Women with solitary papillomas have 1.5-2.0 times increased risk of developing invasive carcinoma. The papillary lesions of the breast include a broad spectrum of disorders from benign papilloma, atypical papilloma to papillary carcinoma. Benign papilloma on core needle biopsy has been found to have concurrent malignancy in about 3–5% of cases at excision. Solid papillomas commonly pose a diagnostic dilemma due to similarities with other ominous papillary lesions. The presence of ADH within a papilloma and/or in the surrounding breast is associated with an increased risk of recurrence or invasive carcinoma. The present study undertakes to fully describe the morphological changes occurring within the epithelial component of central papillomas and to search for factors of prognostic significance concerning recurrence, progression and differentiation of atypical ductal hyperplasia.

Abstract:
Summary The common bovine papilloma virus type 1 has been widely used to stimulate basic research on papilloma viruses involved in some cancers of mankind. The usually benign neoplasms of cattle caused by bovine papilloma viruses are frequent clinical problems for veterinarians. Approximately 240 experimentally induced cutaneous fibropapillomas on 8 susceptible calves had a uniform appearance of initial growth. Their size and duration ranged from about 2 months to nearly 3 years but were similar for the multiple papillomas of each calf. Sequential biopsies were done to examine the histologic changes and existence of viral antigen. Veterinarians in practice may encounter the common fibropapillomas caused by bovine papilloma virus 1 and 2 as well as papillomas with no fibromatous element. These types may develop on teats of cows in some herds. Interdigital papillomas cause a problem in some dairy herds and a virus suspected but not yet found. Prophylactic vaccination with a formalin-killed vaccine will protect against infection with bovine papilloma virus 1 and 2.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The poetic trope and aesthetic category of "distance" is central to Novalis's and Jean Paul Richter's definition of the Romantic, as embodied in dying sound and distant music. In the "young poetic future" proposed by the composer and critic Robert Schumann in the 1830s, romantic distance figures prominently, exemplified by the relationship between the endings of Jean Paul's Flegeljahre and Schumann's Papillons, Op. 2. Distance also provides the key for a new understanding of the relationship between analysis and poetic criticism in Schumann's review of Schubert's Great C-Major Symphony; between texted and untexted music in his Piano Sonata, Op. 11; between music and landscape in Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6; and between the composer and his distant beloved in the Fantasie, Op. 17 and the Novelletten, Op. 21. The article presents new evidence of Schumann's reference to Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte and Clara Wieck's Romance variée, Op. 3 in the Fantasie, and to Clara's Valses romantiques, Op. 4 in Davidsbündlertänze.

Abstract:
Inverted papillomas are tumors of the sinonasal tract with a propensity to recur. Raman spectroscopy can potentially identify inverted papillomas from other tissue based on biochemical signatures. A pilot study comparing Raman spectroscopy to histopathology for 3 types of sinonasal tissue was performed. Spectral data of biopsies from patients with normal sinonasal mucosa, chronic rhinosinusitis, and inverted papillomas are compared to histopathology using principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis after data preprocessing. A total of 18 normal, 15 chronic rhinosinusitis, and 18 inverted papilloma specimens were evaluated. The model distinguished normal sinonasal mucosa, chronic rhinosinusitis, and inverted papilloma tissue with an overall accuracy of 90.2% (95% confidence interval, 0.86-0.94). In conclusion, Raman spectroscopy can distinguish inverted papilloma, normal sinonasal mucosa, and chronically rhinosinusitis tissue with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract:
In Côte d'Ivoire, the cucumber, which is a vegetable with many nutritional and health benefits, has become essential in the diet of city dwellers. This vegetable is not exported because of its reduced production (about 30,000 tons) under the pressure of pests, particularly Lepidoptera. This study was undertaken to inventory and describe the damage of Lepidoptera subservient to cucumber cultivation in Daloa. To do this work, material like colored traps filled to two thirds with soapy water, a mower net and an entomological plier have been used for Lepidoptera collect. A binocular magnifying glass made it possible to observe Lepidoptera organs that were not visible to the naked eye in order to identify them using identification keys. The observations were made according to two phenological stages which are: Germination-Efflorescence and from efflorescence. A total of 1,640 individuals divided into 15 species and 6 families were collected. The families identified are the Pieridae (444 individuals), the Hesperidae (207 individuals), the Nymphalidae (445 individuals), the Papilionidae (196 individuals), the Lycanidae (146 individuals) and the Crambidae (202 individuals). The most voracious genus is Diphania spp. This approach will allow the design of strategies to control cucumber pests (Lepidoptera) and increase its production, the marketing of which has become a source of foreign exchange.

Abstract:
Paraffin-embedded tissues of 42 sinonasal inverted papillomas were subjected to polymerase chain reaction using type-specific primers pairs of HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, and 33. Two cases of HPV 11 and one of HPV 6 were amplified in 36 samples of benign inverted papilloma, and two cases of HPV 16 were amplified in five samples of inverted papilloma with co-existing squamous cell carcinoma. Inverted papillomas recurred in 1 (16%) of 6 cases exhibiting dysplasia, and in 3 (10%) of 30 cases not exhibiting dysplasia. Inverted papillomas also recurred in 2 (66%) of 3 cases positive for HPV, and in 2 (6%) of 33 cases negative for HPV. These results suggest that HPV may be involved in the pathogenesis of inverted papillomas, may cause malignant transformation of inverted papillomas, and that there may be an apparent relationship between HPV infection and the recurrence of sinonasal inverted papillomas.

Abstract:
Solitary papillomas of the bronchial tree are rare, particularly in the distal airways. When encountered, solitary papillomas are not frequently found to undergo malignant transformation. When this does happen, it is usually a squamous cell carcinoma arising in a human papillomavirus–associated squamous papilloma (usually in a central airway). Here we report a unique case of pleomorphic (spindle and squamous cell) carcinoma arising in a mixed glandular and squamous papilloma without human papillomavirus association.

Abstract:
Ductal papillomas have unique papillary features arising from the salivary gland duct system. They comprise three rare benign adenomas, namely, inverted ductal papilloma, sialadenoma papilliferum, and intraductal papilloma. Intraductal papilloma is an extremely rare benign salivary gland tumor that occurs most commonly in the minor salivary glands. Here, we are presenting a case report of intraductal papilloma in an 18-year-old patient.
