Abstract:
We propose a generalized Papoulis-Gerchberg algorithm for the recovery of gaps in general analytic functions. The continuous-time algorithm is based on signal expansions in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, and the discrete-time implementation is based on a suitable nonuniform sampling scheme and the discrete cosine transform.

Abstract:
Statistical key exchange relies on signals with irreducible randomness to covertly transmit information. Because of causality, there may be disturbances during the transient turn-on, which can pose as a security risk. Linear prediction and the Gerchberg–Papoulis methods are used to analyze the risk quantitatively. With properly generated signals, the probability of leak during the transient turn-on is found to be comparable to that of the steady state. The transient signal does not pose as an additional security risk.

Abstract:
As one of the most popular range detection methods, lidar is commonly used in various robotic applications. Although most robotic platforms easily adopt 2D lidar for range sensing, 3D lidar is rarely used in mobile robots, owing to its high cost. Some methods reported in the literature obtain 3D range information by rotating a single 2D lidar device. However, for most of these methods, there is a trade-off between 3D scan frequency and measurement density. Existing methods discussed in the literature for increasing the measurement density in high-frequency lidar have high time complexity and require certain conditions on data distribution. In a previous work, we showed the usability of an image super-resolution method, the Papoulis–Gerchberg (P–G) algorithm, on range data represented in the form of a greyscale image. However, the low convergence rate of the original P–G algorithm impedes its use for online applications. In this study, we advanced the P–G algorithm to drastically reduce the convergence time and improve performance by utilizing previous range images. The proposed algorithm now supports application on a mobile robot with online measurement density enhancement for 3D range images collected by rotating a 2D lidar device around its pitch axis with a high 3D scan frequency. We show illustrative examples for different scenarios to present the effectiveness of the proposed method on a 3D range sensor mounted on a mobile robot.

Abstract:
Numerical methods are proposed for expanding the dynamic range and increasing the quantization resolution of Fourier transform infrared spectrum data. In these methods, an interferogram is oversampled at a rate higher than the Nyquist sampling rate. From the oversampled interferogram data, the full-range interferogram or the lost quantization bits are recovered by using the Gerchberg-Papoulis iterative algorithm, incorporating constraints on the amplitude range of the interferogram and on the band limitation and non-negativity of the spectrum. Experimental results for IR absorption spectra of cyclohexene are shown in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the methods.

Abstract:
One of the more successful engineering applications of fractal geometry has been the utilization of fractal image models in medical image processing. These applications have included tissue characterization studies, textural image segmentation, and image restoration using fractal constraints. The class of fractal models used in medical image processing and the techniques used to estimate the fractal dimension associated with these models will be reviewed. An image segmentation algorithm that utilized a fractal textural feature and formulated the segmentation process as a configurational optimization problem is presented. The configurational optimization method allows information about both, the degree of correspondence between a candidate segment and an assumed textural model, and morphological information about the candidate segment to be used in the segmentation process. To apply this configurational optimization technique with a fractal textural model however, requires the estimation of the fractal dimension of an irregularly shaped candidate segment. The potential utility of a discrete Gerchberg-Papoulis bandlimited extrapolation algorithm to the estimation of the fractal dimension of an irregularly shaped candidate segment is also discussed.

Abstract:
A method to reduce truncation errors in near-field antenna measurements is presented. The method is based on the Gerchberg-Papoulis iterative algorithm used to extrapolate band-limited functions and it is able to extend the valid region of the calculated far-field pattern up to the whole forward hemisphere. The extension of the valid region is achieved by the iterative application of a transformation between two different domains. After each transformation, a filtering process that is based on known information at each domain is applied. The first domain is the spectral domain in which the plane wave spectrum (PWS) is reliable only within a known region. The second domain is the field distribution over the antenna under test (AUT) plane in which the desired field is assumed to be concentrated on the antenna aperture. The method can be applied to any scanning geometry, but in this paper, only the planar, cylindrical, and partial spherical near-field measurements are considered. Several simulation and measurement examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:
Ultrasonic reflection tomography results from a linearization of the inverse acoustic scattering problem, named the inverse Born approximation. The goal of ultrasonic reflection tomography is to obtain reflectivity images from backscattered measurements. This is a Fourier synthesis problem and the first step is to correctly cover the frequency space of the object. For this inverse problem, we use the classical algorithm of tomographic reconstruction by summation of filtered backprojections. In practice, only a limited number of views are available with our mechanical rig, typically 180, and the frequency bandwidth of the pulses is very limited, typically one octave. The resolving power of the system is then limited by the bandwidth of the pulse. Low and high frequencies can be restored by use of a deconvolution algorithm that enhances resolution. We used a deconvolution technique based on the Papoulis method. The advantage of this technique is conservation of the overall frequency information content of the signals. The enhancement procedure was tested by imaging a square aluminium rod with a cross-section less than the wavelength. In this application, the central frequency of the transducer was 250 kHz so that the central wavelength was 6 mm whereas the cross-section of the rod was 4 mm. Although the Born approximation was not theoretically valid in this case (high contrast), a good reconstruction was obtained.

Abstract:
The influence of the flow on the orientation induced by a solid substrate on a nematic liquid crystal is experimentally and theoretically analyzed. Our experimental data show that a nematic cell filled by capillarity presents a birefringence dependent on the sample thickness. This fact suggests that the symmetry of the problem is broken by the filling process. A simple model is presented in order to explain the experimental observations. According to this model, a surface anchoring contribution to the total surface energy, of the same order of the usual one appearing in the Rapini-Papoular expression, is connected to the flow. The agreement between the experimental data and the theoretical results is fairly good.

The spectra of the IRAS low-resolution-spectrometer in tape form have been submitted to a systematic morphological analysis, using classical quantitative discriminants (O.Gal et al. 1987, A & A 183, 29; Y. Baron et al. 1987, A & A 186, 271; R. Papoular 1988, A & A , in press). Spectra which display the 11.5μ feature of SiC fall into 4 classes of average spectral excesses. They differ by the width of the SiC feature and by the presence or absence of secondary features at ~8.6, ~11.7 and ~12.8μm.A majority of these spectra have a lower 12-25μm colour temperature than do most optically selected C-stars, presumably because of thicker dust envelopes. While most spectra belong to LRS class 4n, 20% of the total were found among the brightest 20% of the much larger class In, suggesting that the relative abundance of C-stars is much higher than previously assumed.

Abstract:
The critical amount of corroded steel that causes concrete cover cracking can be readily calculated based on thick-walled cylinder theory. However, the results may vary significantly depending on how the rust deposition is considered. There are several rust deposition hypothesis proposed in the literature for modelling concrete cover cracking of RC structures due to reinforcement corrosion. Among them, three are considered representative ones and have been widely cited in the literature. They are: (i) assumes a certain amount of rust product carried away from the rust layer and deposited within the open cracks proposed by Pantazopoulou and Papoulia; (ii) assumes all of the rust products build up around the bar and all of them are responsible for the expansive pressure proposed by Bazant; (iii) assumes certain amount of rust products deposited into a porous zone around the bar/concrete interface proposed by Liu and Weyers. In this paper, all three rust deposition hypotheses were examined for the critical amount of corrosion to induce cover cracking. When compared to the test data available from the literature, it showed that the porous zone model proposed by Liu and Weyers gives the best predictions. Thus it may be concluded that assuming a porous zone around the steel/concrete interface would be reasonable and may be adopted in developing concrete cover cracking predictive model.

Abstract:
Capacitance measurements have been extensively used to measure the anchoring extrapolation length L at a nematic–substrate interface. These measurements are extremely delicate because the value found for L often critically depends on the sample thickness and the voltage range chosen to perform the measurements. Several reasons have been proposed to explain this observation, such as the presence of inhomogeneities in the director distribution on the bounding plates or the variation with the electric field of the dielectric constants. In this paper, I propose a new method to measure L that takes into account this second effect. This method is more general than the one proposed in Murauski et al. Phys. Rev. E 71, 061707 (2005) because it does not assume that the anchoring angle is small and that the anchoring energy is of the Rapini–Papoular form. This method is applied to a cell of 8CB that is treated for planar unidirectional anchoring by photoalignment with the azobenzene dye Brilliant Yellow. The role of flexoelectric effects and the shape of the anchoring potential are discussed.
