Full textSödra Innovations department for research on fiber and pulp has noticed an aberrant behavior on the stress-strain curves of creped tissue paper. In short the curves behave elastically where it theoretically should be rigid and vice versa. Södra would therefore like to know why this aberrant behavior occurs and an explanation of what happens in the material after it is loaded to the point of rupture. Södra wants to investigate this further to be able to continue to compete with their pulp on the market and help their customers with developing of future products. During this project we have performed tensile tests for factory manufactured creped tissue paper and compared the measurements with strain samples of laboratory-made paper. The measurements were recorded using a light microscope to help see what is happening in the material when subjected to loads; where the crack occurs and how the crack grows to complete rupture. As it turns out, the biggest influencing factor lies in the manufacturing process. During manufacturing, the fiber solution is sprayed on a forming fabric to create the papers structure. This structure creates weak areas where the concentration of fibers is lower than in other areas on the paper. It is in these weaker areas that cracks are believed to occur and later to grow. The laboratory-made paper does not have this significant structure which instead gives it an even breakdown. This project is the beginning of a larger research project that Södra will continue to do further studies on after the completion of this project.

Full textCreped-paper stress-strain curve has higher stiffness until 5 % strain thereafter it becomes less stiff. At manufacturing the creeping process wrinkles the paper that should make the paper less stiff in the beginning of the stress-strain curve and stiffer when the fiber-fiber- connections starts to take up load. A comparison has been made between creped-paper and un-creped-paper, for the benefit to get better knowledge of the importance between the fibers and the creeping process for creped papers material properties. The practical work of the project has been to observe creped-paper and un-creped-paper in a material testing machine while it has been recorded by a usb – microscope - camera. The material testing machine test of creped-paper and un-creped-paper that was executed was standard tests of ISO 12615 - 4: 2005, release-of-load-tests, camera-angle-tests and stable-crack-tests. The results from the release-of-load-tests, was that creped-paper gets a significant stiffness increase, that didn’t un-creped-paper get. The air-pockets or craters who are made by the paper-mass that aren’t stuck to the yankee-cylinders adhesive, the craters begins to stretch out during the less stiff part of creped-papers stress-strain-curve. To get good angle usb-microscope-camera footages of the creping-structure, the usb-microscope-camera has to be smaller or the area at the material testing machines grip to grip has to be larger.

Full textAbstract This report contains an investigation on, how and in what way, it´s possible to reduce the reactive effect (VAR) consumption at Metsä Board Mill in Husum. The VAR consumption is not a problem during normal operation, but if one of the mill´s three turbines for some reason falls out of operation the VAR consumption may exceed the agreement with the mill´s electricity distributor. If the agreed VAR consumption is exceeded, the mill has to pay a fee for each kVAr that exceeds the agreed consumption level. This is something that the mill wants to avoid because the turbines aren’t always operational due to the need of maintenance work. The largest VAR consumption is located at the paper mill, which is why the compensation measures are focused in this area. After studying the mill´s single-line diagram of the electrical distribution and different measuring equipment located in the mill, it becomes clear that the VAR compensation equipment is best fitted at the mill´s coating machine. The coating machine is the only production line in the paper mill that is missing VAR compensation equipment, that’s why the compensation measures are needed here. After calculations it’s clear that the needed VAR compensation capacity is 15 MVAr and should be placed in connection to the coating machine. This capacity is enough to compensate for a loss of the VAR generated from the turbine G1, which is assumed to produce 15 MVAr guaranteed. That compensation is enough to avoid exceeding the VAR consumption agreement with the electricity distributor. But to avoid problems with harmonics, 16 MVAr compensation equipment is recommended instead because it´s more suited for the job. Metsä has plans to put their pulp mill in insulated operation that separates the mill´s grid from the distribution grid. This becomes possible whit the recommended VAR compensation equipment to avoid over consumption of VAR from the electricity distributor.

Full textThis thesis assigned by Askalon AB highlights difficulties in monitoring and thus to find early bearing failure in machinery with low speed. Low vibration energies generated by bearings are easily hidden by noise from other components which makes bearing failure hard to find when using vibration analysis. This work focuses on a washing press located at Billerud AB Gruvön mill. The washing press is a key machine that is vital for the process which means that an unscheduled stop leads to high costs. Therefore it is important to find a monitoring method where the condition of the machine can be predicted in an early stage. Good knowledge of the machine properties, design and measuring equipment is important for the monitoring to be reliable. Pulp flow, flushing, varied speed and torque are examples of operational circumstances that have an immediate effect on measured vibrations. To prevent noise it is important to measure during similar circumstances. This way a reliable trend with alarm limits can be made where the fault development can be monitored. If remaining bearing life is known a decision considering stopping the machine for maintenance can be done. Today monitoring of low speed machines are supported by several technologies. Most of these technologies are based upon demodulation. To achieve accurate measurements, demands regarding choice of sensor, mounting of sensor and database configuration are necessary. In addition to the discussion above it is advisable to gather information while repairing the machine to help making decisions in the future and obtaining experience.

Full textTissue paper or soft paper are materials used for hygiene purposes and are available as toilet paper, kitchen paper and handkerchiefs. Depending on the variety that is manufactured, properties are adapted based on, among other things, the choice of fibers and chemicals. The problem that exists today is that some tissues lack quality, which is exemplified by the fact that they are torn in the long run and not during the perforation. Tissue can also break after the toilet visit. This leads to increased product waste and environmental impact. As part of trying to reduce the environmental impact and optimize the properties of paper, this report is written within the constraints of a mechanical science project by the research group called “Mechanics and materials” on Orebro university. In this project, four different types of tissue have been studied. During the work, the enclosing ability of the various paper products, its contact angle, has been examined and analyzed under pressure. Furthermore, the deflection under load has also been investigated theoretically. The purpose of the work was to investigate whether there was a concise method to measure the coverage, as part of the larger research project. An objective finger-like sensor is used as a tool to see a possible correlation with the measurement method. The results showed that the method was consistent and had a correlation with the objective finger-like sensor result. For further work, further tests on the paper products are recommended to perform a thorough statistical analysis. Further connections to the properties of the paper products can also provide a deeper understanding of how the material bends under load.
