From the theorems found in the publication Geometriae Pars Universalisof 1668 are presented, for the first time in portuguese, the proof of Pappus’s theorems for solids of revolution. This publication , originally written in latin, is due to the scottish mathematician James Gregory (1638-1675) and is prior to the development of Calculus. Furthermore some concepts of Calculus and center of gravity are also revised to present a proof of these theorems from these tools. Some direct cases for Pappus’s theorems are presented, where the axis of rotation or revolution is represented by one of the coordinate axes or by a straight line parallel to them. Also shown are cases where the axis of rotation is given by a straight tilted in the cartesian plane, showing the scope, efficiency and relative simplicity of applying these theorems.

Abstract:
The annotated papers that are submitted as part of this thesis consider the phenomenon of colour at the fundamental, technical, and application levels, and they were written and published by Oulton between 1990 and 2009. The papers disclose significant insights by the author into colorimetric modeling theory and report aspects of the author's work that have led to commercially successful practical applications. The academic significance of these papers is evident in their citation record; their practical value is shown by a number of successful industrial collaboration programmes, and through the award of national prizes for innovation by the Worshipful Company of Dyers, and the Society of Dyers and Colorists. The published research primarily concerns digital devices that either capture or reproduce coloured images. For example, the research problem of how to calibrate the colour on computer CRT screens, which was thought at the time to be intractable, was reported by Oulton in paper 1 to be solved at the two to three significant figure level of colorimetric accuracy. This world leading level of accuracy was subsequently confirmed using a comprehensive data set in paper 7, and has been exploited internationally in commercial computer aided design and colour communication systems by Textile Computer Systems Ltd and Datacolor Inc. Further research problems resolved by Oulton in the presented papers include how to predict the colorimetric sensitivity of dye recipes; how to design, test, and fine-tune the spectral response of digital cameras; and how the individual customers in a shop can be tracked automatically to reveal their buying behavior, using coloured CCTV images. The challenge to the standard CIE colorimetric model posed by the results of Dr W.A. Thornton was analyzed and satisfactorily explained by Oulton in papers 2, 3 and 4. It is also shown that Thornton's results do not in any way compromise either the practice of colorimetry based on the CIE Standard Observer, or the validity of its quantifying data sets. It is also additionally shown under the annotation of paper 4 presented here, that the success of the CIE colorimetric model has a clearly demonstrable theoretical basis. In all but one of the presented papers the convention is maintained that the standard CIE XYZ co-ordinate model should be used as the reference basis, when modeling the properties of colour and quantifying its uses. The final paper to be published (and presented here as paper 4) challenges this convention and demonstrates that a context free and formally defined alternative reference basis may be used in colorimetric modeling with significant advantage. It is also shown in paper 4 that under the specified axioms, any cross dependency that is potentially non linear can in principle be resolved into its component scalar and additive relationships, and that the causes of scalar non linearity may be characterized independently from the causes of linearly additive cross dependency. The result is a widely applicable analytical and experimental design method for resolving complex cross dependent relationships in general and in particular, for resolving those between the spectral visual stimuli and the psychophysical response to them.

Abstract:
Rhetoric and Rupture: A Theory of the Event This thesis engages the problematic of agency and interiority in rhetorical studies by proposing a theory of evental rhetoric. The event is a rupture in the continuities of the symbolic, revealing the distance between the forces of symbolization and their phantasmagorical effects. This theory is built upon the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Jacques Lacan, engaging questions of truth, being, and the relationship of the subject to herself and the world. The rhetorics of legal practice, particularly the per curiam opinions of the United States Supreme Court, I argue, provide the institutional and epistemological formations necessary to transcend the bonds of situated rhetoric and become truly evental. I turn to the Supreme Court decision in New York Times Co. v. United States as an example of such an evental rhetoric. These rhetorics clear the way for the introduction of the new, and found a conversation in which democracy can begin.

The central theme of this research is to study the importance of Jacob Levy Moreno’s role theory to the bibliodrama. Considered as the art of interpreting sacred texts, the bibliodrama is approached from the theoretical conceptions of the author Anete Roese, being complemented with contributions from Esly Carvalho and Pitzele. Beginning with the delimitation of its concept, following the approach of its origin in psychodrama, its methodology and its hermeneutic function, emphasizing the role of bibliodramatist as director, coordinator and facilitator of the whole process. Because of the importance of role theory to the bibliodrama, specific topics of psychodrama that reveal the Morenian anthropological concepts will be explained: the conception of the subject as a cosmic being, his psychological development and the construction of his personality. These concepts will assist in the way of understanding bibliodramatic hermeneutic action, i.e., one that emerges from the drama. This hermeneutics is in resonance with the biblical hermeneutics proposed by Ricoeur, resuming the hermeneutics of Schleiermarcher, whose focus of interpretation is based on the psychological understanding of the subject, as it is recommended by Drewermann today. By revealing the importance of role theory as a contribution to bibliodrama, based on psychodramatic anthropology, this research, in addition to inserting the bibliodrama in the psychology of religion, also builds another possibility: it allows the bibliodrama contributions to the theory of psychodrama, through a series of reflections on its philosophical origin, i.e., a direct relationship with God. In short, this dialogical relationship of the subject, through bibliodramatc roles, with the Bible becomes an agent of transformation, instrument of the biblical message, in search of growth, both personal and professional, allowing the rescue of faith, facilitator of the encounter with God and himself.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper has been to examine various ethnic stereotypes in two Swedish film adaptations of Astrid Lindgren’s character Pippi Longstocking. I have used a semiotic content analysis and postcolonial theory to investigate: 1) how the ethnic groups are represented in the different materials, 2) if there is a hegemonic relationship between the foreign group and one’s own group, 3) whether there has been a "decolonization" during the twenty years that separate the two films. This study has shown that, in the 1949 adaptation, primarily Africans were produced in a negative light and as biologically inferior in relation to the whites. Furthermore, other ethnic groups, such as Indians, Egyptians, Brazilians, and Danes, were portrayed as scared, alien or different. However, the TV series of 1969 permeates with a greater sense of racial tolerance than its predecessor and, despite remnants of racial stereotyping, the overall tone of the later adaptation feels more progressive.

Penney, Dawn. ""No change in a new era?" : the impact of the Education Reform Act (1988) on the provision of physical education and sport in state schools." Thesis, University of Southampton, 1994. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/194417/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on research that explored the impact of the Education Reform Act (ERA) (1988) on the provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in state schools within one Local Education Authority (LEA) in England. Specifically, it highlights the complexity of the development and 'implementation' of the National Curriculum for Physical Education (NCPE) and addresses the issues of power and control in the policy process. Chapter 1 outlines the policies within the ERA and the issues arising from them for the provision of PE and sport in schools. Chapters 2 and 3 detail the theoretical and methodological bases of the research respectively. The former centres on policy analysis in education and specifically, the conceptualisation of policy 'as a process'. The latter presents research 'as a process' and addresses the role of a qualitative and ethnographic approach, the integration of theoretical, methodological and empirical issues, and the utilisation of both quantitative and qualitative methods in facilitating the enquiry and understanding of the NCPE as both 'policy' and 'practice'. Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 address the policy process at different 'levels' in the education system, describing and analysing the role that central government and the NCPE working group (chapter 4), the LEA (chapter 5), schools and the PE departments and teachers within them (chapters 6 & 7) played in determining the 'effects' of the ERA on the future provision of PE and sport in schools and specifically, what constituted a NCPE in 'policy' and 'practice'. These chapters provide a comprehensive account of the emergence of the NCPE and its interaction with, in particular, the introduction of Local Management of Schools. A variety of data illustrates that in many respects, the introduction of a NCPE signalled 'no change' in PE. In chapter 8 a revised theoretical framework, centring on the interaction of frames (Lundgren,1977i Bernstein, 1990) is presented as a basis for the development of further studies of education policy. In conclusion attention is drawn to methodological issues raised by the research and the need for further research to explore the implications of the observed absence of change in PE if a NCPE is to provide a 'broad and balanced' PE curriculum for all children.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent developments in international relations have seen dramatic increases in the number and activities of human rights non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This has inspired research that seeks to explain processes of human rights socialisation, particularly in crisis zones. In this context, NGO advocacy is often welcomed as being inherently beneficial for adherence to human rights principles. Such a position, however, fails to account for the critiques offered by theorists who suggest that the wielding of any power to affect change can have negative as well as positive outcomes, and the critiques of realist international relations theorists who assert the dangers of unqualified promotion of normative concerns in the face of power interests. In this context, this thesis offers a critical evaluation of the contributions of NGO advocacy in human rights socialisation. Two models of human rights socialisation – the spiral and boomerang models – are utilised in examining human rights advocacy in West Papua, a province of Indonesia. The West Papuan case study indicates that detrimental outcomes can result from the failure of human rights advocates to account for political interests and state sovereignty in their strategies of human rights promotion. Human rights campaigns framed in terms of people’s rights to physical security and subsistence, instead of more political rights, such as the right to selfdetermination, are likely to be more positive for human rights adherence. This points to the desirability of a hierarchy of rights principles in human rights advocacy and suggests, for the socialisation models used, a need for clearer distinctions between the human rights principles prescribed for advocacy.

Purpose/aim The purpose of this work was to see what channels of communication are to prefer when working with secondary school pupils, more concrete when speaking about the environment, about the profile of the school and democracy among the pupils.

Material/method I am going to visit two secondary schools in the middle of Sweden, one that has an environment certification, and the other one is a regular secondary school. To answer these questions I am going to interview totally four teachers, two from each school, and 12 pupils from each school divided into two groups per school.

Main results One of the main results was that the pupils prefer to mix the tutoring for a better way to learn. Another result was that they see their teachers as paragons and that it is more important what the teachers do than what they say.

Abstract:
My thesis addresses how Christianity can constitute itself as a creative force and a form of governance across different scales. I carried out 12 months of fieldwork between 2013 and 2015 in Papua New Guinea's National Parliament (Port Moresby). My interlocutors were bureaucrats, liberal professionals and pastors who formed a group known as the Unity Team. The Unity Team, spearheaded by the Speaker of the 9th Parliament, Hon. Theodor Zurenuoc, were responsible for controversial initiatives, such as the destruction and dismantling of traditional carvings from Parliament in 2013, which they considered ungodly and evil, and the placement of a donated KJV Bible in the chamber of Parliament in 2015. My interlocutors regard Christianity as central to eliciting modern subjects and institutions. They consider Christianity to be a universal form of discernment, contrasted to particularistic forms of knowing and relating which are thought to create corruption and low institutional performance. I show how the Unity Team regarded Christianity as more than a way of doing away with satanic forces and building a Christian self. They expected Christianity to be a frame of reference informing work ethics, infusing citizenship and, finally, productive of a public and national realm. By exploring Christianity ethnographically, I offer a contribution to Anthropological discussions concerning politics, bureaucracy, citizenship, and nation-making.

Considering the higher education scenario in Brazil, the thesis that proposed defend it was systematized as follows: there is a lack of public policies and organizational policies of teacher training for the management of higher education Institutions (HEI) which focuses on building the social role of academic manager, compromising the outsourcing and the recognition of their managerial competencies, in performing such social role. This investigation was guided by the following research question: how the gap of public policies and organizational policies related to teacher training for the management of HEI reflected in the construction of academic manager role and management of managerial competencies skills of teachers, considering their performance in the role of manager?. In the search for answers to the problems, took place a basic interpretive qualitative study, with the Federal University of São Francisco Valley as a place of research. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation and document analysis of secondary data, characterizing the methodological triangulation. The Content Analysis was adopted for the processing of data, with the support of the Atlas Ti software. Given the distinct natures of epistemological constructs imposed on survey question, the research guided by a multi-paradigmatic perspective, translating into theoretical triangulation, giving heterodox character to the thesis. The theoretical framework consisted of the following themes: social roles; social roles of higher education teacher, emphasizing the role of academic manager; managerial skills of higher education teachers, public policies and organizational policies for the training of higher education teachers. The analytical models of Paiva (2007) and Mendonça et al. (2012) also gave support to the study, culminating in a proposal for integration represented in the Framework for analysis of formation of managerial skills of the academic manager in federal universities. The findings concerning the five guiding questions confirmed the defended thesis and led to the following conclusion: the gap of public policies and organizational policies for training of higher education teachers for federal institutions of high education (Ifes) management focuses on the construction and socialization of subject in the role of academic manager, compromising the process of outsourcing, legitimacy and development of professional management skills, everlasting thus the unprofessional actions of the same in the exercise of that role. Far from exhausting discussions, this study reaffirms the understanding that the complexity and dynamics of the Brazilian educational reality are demanding the adoption of public and organizational policies of formation of teacher for the Ifes management, based on the development of managerial competencies that contribute to the performance of these subjects in the academic manager role and help them to promote teaching, research and extension in excellence levels.

Abstract:
Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Bowen, Diana Isabel. "Visuality and the archive : the Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa papers as a theory of social change." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-12-2613.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa Papers, 1942-2004 are located in the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin. They contain published and unpublished works along with photographs, correspondence, artwork, notes, interviews, etc. As a woman of color who is interested in issues of social justice, disrupting dominant ideological binaries, and intersections of race, class, and gender, Anzaldúa has much to offer the field of rhetoric and communication studies. The purpose of the study is to derive Anzaldúa’s theory of social change. As a woman of color, Anzaldúa simultaneously aligns and differentiates herself from the Chicano movement and the feminist movement. Citing her, and other Chicana feminists concerns, she uses a theory of the B/borderlands as a generative theory from which she theorizes using nepantla and images. Her theory of social change is implicit and available to rhetors upon an examination of the official and unofficial texts available in her archive. Diana Taylor’s concepts of the archive (official texts) and the repertoire (unofficial performances and iterations) are used to examine Anzaldúa’s archival collection. The artifacts included an examination of Anzaldúa’s birth certificate and corrections compared with a short story “Her Name Never Got Called.” In addition a documentary Altar is examined and compared with conversations that led to its creation. An analysis of Anzaldúa’s archive suggests that there is an oscillation between the official archives and the unofficial performances. These movements reveal Anzaldúa’s favor for images as instrumental in her theory-making process; they reveal her imagistic theory of social change. Applying a theory of discourse from the borderlands that emerges out of the archive of Anzaldúa will make rhetoricians better equipped to study texts that speak back to dominant discourses and refuse oppressive binaries.

Beerits, Laura Catherine. "Writing with feeling? : types of personal reference in student papers." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-3577.

Abstract:
The question of the appropriateness and effectiveness of students' personal writing is a longstanding one in the academy. In composition studies, the ideological fight over personal and academic writing is most often represented by the oft-studied but rarely changed Bartholomae/Elbow debate. In literary studies, reader-response critics in particular have wrestled with the problems and possibilities of subjective interpretation. Yet despite scholastic interest in issues of personal writing, discussions have remained primarily theoretical and have relied mainly on anecdotal evidence. While small-scale case studies valuably illuminate the processes of an individual student or two, the conversation would be profoundly bolstered by empirical data. How common are personal responses, really? Further, while many believe that any presence of first-person pronouns signals personal, subjective writing, anecdotal cases suggest that there are several categories of personal writing, and that these different types of expressivism produce a range of rhetorical effects. The current study attempts to name and refine these categories--using the distinctions of General claim, Writer-based prose, Personal experience, and Personal claim—to begin to fill in this empirical gap. Is it a mistake to lump all use of personal reference into the category of "personal writing"? Would helping students distinguish between these varying types of personal references inform their stylistic and rhetorical choices? By reviewing a sample of 30 short papers written by college students in a general requirement literature survey course, I will examine how frequently--and in what ways--students reference themselves when responding in writing to a work of literature.

Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/17517.

Full text
Abstract:
The presence of a chronic disease requires a continuous search of the pharmaceutical services. With the expansion of the pharmaceutical services, these professionals started to accompany the patient as health professionals, enabling another relationship that could benefit the health of the patient. That said, the purpose of this research is to see how the role of pharmacists and patients in their relationship affect the effectiveness of chronic disease management. For this study, two research flows were used, the first one is Role theory and its cognitive perspective that studies the influence of the patient's expectations on the positive and negative reactions at the individual level. The second is the "microfoundations movement" that allowed us to consider the multilevel interactions in a health ecosystem. Thus, a qualitative methodology is used through interviews with several entities in order to understand the vision of each member of this ecosystem for the patient-pharmaceutical relationship. We have noticed that the positive reactions of patients to the pharmaceutical service prevail over negative ones, which may allow a greater interaction between the patient and the pharmacist. However, some resistance of the patients to this relationship was verified due to the lack of assimilation of the extended role of the pharmacist. We have found that a better understanding of this relationship can be achieved by taking a multilevel view of this ecosystem. Through this dissertation it is suggested that in order to obtain a change and expansion of the services made available to the final customer there must be significant institutional, organizational and individual relationship changes throughout the entire pharmaceutical ecosystem.

Abstract:
The study intends to investigate the nature and cognitive demands of contextual word-problems posed in the FET mathematics examinations of IEB and NSC. The analysis of the mathematization of real-life situations to form contextual word-problems is based on the theory of authentic task situations. The theoretical basis for analyzing mathematics teaching and learning is the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) theory. Data was obtained using the schedule of mathematization of real-life situations and the schedule of total marks of contextual word-problems and national performance. All contextual word-problems included in the 2008-2013 question papers of IEB and NSC mathematics examinations were analysed. The research revealed that 509 marks out of 1800 marks were allocated to contextual word-problems in IEB examinations; whereas 473 marks out of 1800 marks were allocated to contextual word-problems in NSC examinations.

Abstract:
This dissertation selects the concept of Locus of Control (Rotter, 1966) and it’s measure (Palenzuela, 1984; 1997) used in a way to percept eventual impacts on the Locus of Control on seventh grade students, after having participated in a role-playing game. The chosen strategy for researching is made by direct observation and employment of surveys. Thirty three students with ages comprised between twelve and thirteen, who were on seventh grade in a school in Coimbra, Portugal, participated. The chosen instrument employed to the population was a personality measure of Generalized Expectancies of Control (BEEGC, Palenzuela, Almeida, Prieto & Barros, 1994), to evaluate the constructs of locus of control, auto efficacy, contingency and expectancies of success. The scale was applied in two separate moments, before and after six sessions of playing the game. In a second study we compared the results of students who did not play, with the sample of participants in the role-playing game. This research did not show significant effects that the interpretation of a character in imagined scenarios, allowing flexibility of thought to rehearse decision processes changes the Locus of Control in order to "internalize" it. Even so, and although the intervention was brief, the results reveal a perception of greater contingency to the actions themselves, to which the symbolic convergence of the interactions in the group will not be indifferent, allowing to place the expectations of success in a plan of greater complexity, in which each one, everyone and chance take an active part.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis aims to explore whether international intervention can be the main cause of suicide terrorism. To determine this causal relation between suicide terrorism and international intervention, it tests Robert Pape's nationalist theory. The research sample of the cases of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Palestine was selected based on the Suicide Terrorism Attack database. The thesis applies the empirical-analytical methodology and the method of multiple case study to confirm or refute the validity of the research hypotheses. The outcome of the thesis is that the main trigger for a suicide terrorist campaign is a significantly stronger adversary, a social climate conducive to self- sacrifice, and an individual sense of hopelessness. The presence of international intervention fulfils all these features, but the theory has its limits - an exclusive focus on foreign intervention and state centrality.
