Full textDuring the first millennium BC, the central Andean populations underwent a complex process of cultural development, both sociopolitical and economic, that led to the rise of more hierarchical societies and of leaders that held great power. This process was motivated by a particular phenomenon: the expansion and intensification of long distance exchange networks of prestige goods. Within this context, the evidence recovered at the archaeological site of Puerto Nuevo, Paracas, provides a great opportunity to characterize these exchange networks and to clarify the role played by the populations of the south coast inside those networks. The great quantity of finely decorated ceramics found at Puerto Nuevo, many of which exhibit foreign stylistic traits, led to the formulation of a research question that guides the present investigation: these fine prestige ceramics were made in the south coast (imitations) or were brought from other regions (importations)? In order to answer this question, a compositional analysis was carried out by means of the technique of digital microscopy. The aim of this analysis is to identify compositional groups that provide information on the source materials employed. Additionally, a series of technological, morphological and decorative characteristics were analyzed for each ceramic. The correlation of the results obtained allowed for the identification of several manufacturing communities and the possibility to infer the local or foreign nature of those communities (and, by extension, of the ceramics produced by them). This information was then used to determine the mechanisms by which these ceramic vessels arrived to Paracas, hence, being able to comprehend the role fulfilled by the inhabitants of Puerto Nuevo within the exchange networks that dominated the Central Andean Formative Period.

Full textChavín de Huántar is one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Formative Era of the Central Andes (1800 BC – 200 AD). Since your revelation to the western world (century XVI) this archaeological monument has been distinguished by contain in its interior narrow and obscure passages underground. Among them stand out the network of subterranean canals, and among them, the Rocas Canal: a long and complex system than runs through the whole archaeological site; interconnecting the different plazas, platforms and buildings of the exterior. The present research explain the sequence of events occurred in one of these subterranean canals, the branch RL.02: a duct that runs side by side the Circular Plaza, the open space more important of the sanctuary. To the establishment of the sequence we actualize the systematization of the network, we did a qualitative analysis of the walls, a stratigraphic analysis and a type-serie analysis of the ceramic evidence. The interrelation of the results serve to comprehend the history of the branch RL.02, since the moment of its construction, around 800 BC, until the time Recuay made unable to use, around 200 AD. These inferences were put it together with the antecedents of the Rocas Canal with the final objective to identify, preliminarily, the main functions that had this complex and sophisticated hydraulic system during Chavín epoch, and the uses that had during the Recuay epoch.

Full textWithin the process that frames the Middle Horizon (600 AD-1000 AD) in the central Andes, wari society reflected a fundamental socio-political change in the Andean territory, thus developing innovative architectural planning techniques, of great relevance for understanding of the nature of its expansion and relationship with other societies. This new architectural model was imposed in various regions by a centralized State in Ayacucho. Wiracochapampa, located in the department of Libertad, and Pikillaqta, in Cusco, were a reflection of the installation of the imperial domain at two ends of the territory. The similarity of the architectural pattern in these sites makes us think that these would have been built by a regulatory apparatus. The analysis of spatial syntax of the structures in both sites will help us to understand their planning and architectural composition, which we know today as the two most important administrative centers of the wari political organization.
