Abstract:
The Islamic hereafter is often imagined as a place of corporeal reward or punishment. But what is the place of this corporeal hereafter in the imagination of renunciant mystics who wish to completely renounce God’s creation for His sake? Isn’t Paradise after all part of God’s creation as well? Should it be hoped for, or is there something more quintessential awaiting the mystic: seeing God? And how then can this transcendental God be seen? Is it a vision with the eye or with the heart, or both? And is this vision only reserved for the hereafter or can those passionately longing for it already

Abstract:
This essay revolves around a paradox of Umayyad art: the tendency for the same decorative schemes to yield apparently contradictory, yet internally coherent interpretations, mostly to do with paradise or empire. Through a discussion of the Dome of the Rock, the Great Mosque of Damascus, and two key Umayyad Qurʾan manuscripts, it investigates whether this ambiguity should in fact be understood as a consciously crafted polysemy. This reflection is set within a broader cultural context that involves, first of all, the inherent ambiguity of the Qurʾan as a text and related literary values; second,

Abstract:
The chapter considers the figure of the hur’in (houri), a female denizen of Islamic paradise referenced in the Quran and thus widely discussed in early and medieval Islamic literary and religious sources. It investigates Islamic gendered relationships outside the institution of marriage and the ways in which male–female companionship was configured in Islamic religious and social practice. The intense focus in medieval and modern scholarship on gender relations through marriage detracts from the fact that Muslim men did not only experience feminine companionship through marriage. Abstract:
The fascination with the houri, the pure female of Islamic paradise, began long before September 11, 2001. The Beauty of the Houri demonstrates how the ambiguous reward of the houri, mentioned in the Qurʾan and developed in Islamic theological writings, has gained a distinctive place in English and French literature from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century and in digital material in the twenty-first century. The houri had multiple functions in Islamic texts that ranged from caretaker to pure companion to entertainment. French, English, and American writers used the houri to critique Isla
