Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract: This work aims to demonstrate how literature, combined with historiography and memory, can contribute to reworking history writing. From the critical reading of the trilogy written by Augusto Roa Bastos (1917-2005) - Hijo de hombre (1960), Yo el supremo (1974) and El fiscal (1993) - this research discusses the question of exile and its implications for the life of intellectuals, especially in the twentieth century. The texts are analyzed in the light of theoretical references that deal with relations between history, memory, intellectual, power and exile. The concepts are discussed from the perspective of literature, comparative literature and historical and cultural studies. The historical characters involved in Roa Bastos' plot allow revisiting the history of his country, and contribute to the study of national identity. The historical facts and the fictionalized memorialistic texts allow the author to discuss issues such as the relation between history, memory and forgetfulness, collective and power

Abstract:
In 1767. By order of King Charles lll, all Jesuits were expelled from Spanish dominions, accused of plotting to overthrow the State. Even Paraguay, were the famous Reductions were established, feel under the order and by 1768 all of the Jesuits were deported out of the area. After a one-year journey, the Jesuitical Province of Paraguay was exiled into the Pontifical States, between Faenza and Ravenna. First years of exile were very harsh, to such an extent that many of the Jesuits died. To mitigate this drift, whose causes were both material-organizational and spiritual, the role of Domingo Muriel, the last Provincial of Paraguay, stood out. He made efforts, aimed at keeping up the Jesuitical identity among his subordinates. When, in 1773, Pope Clement XIV broke up the Society of Jesus, Muriel drew up a letter outlining a spiritual perspective in view of Society's rebirth. Through this letter and other works, published up to the early Nineties, on the one hand he deepened a spirituality of lgnatian's identity, which had eschatological implications as well as remarkable points of contact with the later lntransigent Catholicism; on the other hand, he succeeded in shaping an image of Paraguayan Reductions which was conducive to its apologetic meaning. In doing this, he also brought together some of his subordinates - fathers Cardiel, Quiroga, Sànchez Labrador, Dobrizhoffer, Peramás and others - that with their works placed themselves on the wake of Muriel in using the image of Paraguayan Reductions to engage at first in the apologetic struggle against Jurisdictionalism, later against the Revolution

Piciulo, Viviana Silvia. "Les Jesuites américaines expulsés en Italie et Joaquín Camaño (1767-1814)." Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0110.

Abstract:
Joaquin Camaño was a Jesuit from Paraguay, who lived in exile in Italy for most of his life from 1767 to 1820. His work and his fame can be considered of smaller importance if compared to many other Jesuits exiled following orders from Carlos III in Emilia-Romagna (1767). Through my search I explore in depth the role of J. Camaño, a smaller character who becomes part of the life of the others expelled through a dynamic "network report" of which he was one of the principal craftsmen. My objective has been to study the impact that these the American Jesuit exiles had, through the life of Joaquin Camaño, on the italian intellectual world, european and american after 1767. Camaño, with his studies, it is inserted in the renewed and vivacious rhetoric of the "Nuovo Mondo" which in those years assumed great dynamism. Born in La Rioja, Argentina, he grew up as a bright cartographer and linguist in the context of the European illustration thanks to his particular life as a missionary. After his expulsion, Joaquin Camaño, together with numerous other American brethren, arrived in Faenza, in the Papal State, devoting himself to the study of cartography and of the American languages. He found his place in a neuralgic moment for the history of linguistics, when direct observation and theoretical reflection of the phenomena were measured with the great human variety which by then were to be found in the world

Abstract:
This is an investigation of the epic poetry produced in and about the Ibero-American world during the early modern period (sixteenth to eighteenth centuries) in trilingual perspective: in addition to the more familiar Spanish- and Portuguese-language texts, consideration is also––and, for the purposes of the thesis, above all––given to material in Latin. Latin was the third of the international literary languages of the Iberian imperial world; it is also by far the most neglected, having fallen between the cracks of modern disciplinary boundaries in their current configurations. The thesis seeks to rehabilitate the Latin-language component as a fully-fledged member of the Ibero-American epic tradition, arguing that it demands to be analysed with reference not only to the classical and classicising traditions but to those same themes and concerns––in this case, the centre|periphery binary––as are investigated for counterparts when in Spanish or Portuguese. The crucial difference is that––while the ends may be the same––the means of thematising these issues derive in form and signifying power from interactions with the conceptual vocabularies and frameworks of the Greco-Roman epic tradition. How is America represented and New World space figured––even produced––in a poetic idiom first developed by ancient Mediterranean cultures with no conception whatsoever of the continent of the western hemisphere? At the core is one such long neglected Ibero-American Latin-language epic by a figure who lived across the Iberian imperial world: the 'De Invento Novo Orbe Inductoque Illuc Christi Sacrificio' (Faenza, 1777) by Catalan-born Jesuit José Manuel Peramás. Peramás’s epic––which has never been the subject of a literary-critical study before––is offered as a test case: an exercise in analysing a Latin-language Hispanic epic qua Hispanic epic and setting it into Ibero-American literary-cultural context. This is to be understood in relation to the field of so-called ‘New World poetics’: an at present emergent zone of inquiry within Iberian colonial studies which until now has been developing almost completely without reference to the Latin-language portion of the corpus.

Abstract:
This chapter traces how exile became an institutionalized mechanism of exclusion and underscores the paradoxical connection between citizenship and exclusionary modernity in the region. It stresses how these countries experienced policies of massive deterritorialization of citizens to counteract a widened involvement in public arenas and politics, and that the very drive of modernization generated new social forces, which these political systems were unable to include through democratic institutionalization. It discusses the cases of Paraguay, with its cycles of authoritarian rule and political turmoil generating massive exile and expatriation; Argentina and its recurrent waves of territorial displacements; Uruguay and the mass expatriation and exile of its citizens in the authoritarian period; and post-1973 Chile, also with massive exile and global dispersion.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the politics of return and shows that the impact of exile was acknowledged more promptly by ample social and political sectors in Chile and Uruguay, which facilitated initiatives on the part of nongovernmental organizations and state agencies toward the reinsertion of displaced conationals, with more solid foundations than in Argentina or Paraguay. It also traces the legal attempts to undo banishment and the efforts carried out by transnational networks and international agencies to facilitate the return from exile. The chapter also assesses the politics of return and return policies in their design and results, identifying the differential capacity of exile communities to galvanize the diasporas and advocacy networks, and define a shared agenda despite internal differences and strategies..

Abstract:
Upon democratization, the public spheres of the Southern Cone countries were diversified, with former exiles, expatriates, and migrants deciding whether to return home or stay abroad, or perhaps to join the ranks of sojourners and move back and forth between countries of origin and of residence. Returnees, migrants, and sojourners played important roles in all four countries, albeit in different arenas and with varied short-term and long-term impacts. This chapter addresses the persisting pockets of creativity maintained in Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina during the authoritarian period and the various forms of reinsertion of former exiles and expatriates. It pays attention to the role that returnees among others played in each of the four countries in reconstructing democracy, in shedding some myths, and in reshaping public institutions.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the logic of the selection of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay as the focus of analysis on exile, diaspora, and return, indicating the puzzling divergence of their paths from authoritarian rule into democratization. Against the background of regional closeness and cooperation, cycles of authoritarian dictatorships, and varied workings of democracy, we explore the role of key intellectual and political figures affecting the distinctive paths of the new and restored democracies. The chapter also positions this work as maintaining an analytical/theoretical and empirical dialogue with several interrelated corpuses of research in the humanities and social sciences; namely, the chapter addresses issues dealing with exile, expatriation, and forced migration; diaspora and transnationalism; processes of political transition, transitional justice, and cultural transformation; and the construction and reconstruction of collective identities, including hybrid identities. Finally, the chapter provides readers with a road map to the remaining chapters of the book.
