Abstract:
A checklist for Paraíba bryophytes comprising 176 species (including 15 synonyms and the exclusion of three doubtful identifications), 86 genera, and 35 families is presented. This regional pool of species represents 19% of the Brazilian endemic species. We identified six species (not included in the Brazilian Red List) that require attention from a conservation viewpoint due to their rare distributions. The bryophyte assemblages are distributed according to precipitation and temperature gradients related to their distance from the coast, allied to stochastic processes. The present study identified deficits in collection efforts, especially in drier areas.

Abstract:
The state of Paraíba is included in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil, called Caatinga, and this region is characterized by low and irregular rainfall, with xerophilous vegetation. Social wasps are an important ecological group, which has been utilized for biological control and as bioindicators of environmental quality. Few studies about the diversity of social wasps were accomplished in the Caatinga and there is no survey of social wasps in the state of Paraiba. This study used data collected from city of Sumé, through field research and analysis of previously deposited material from surveys realized by Brazilian Corporation of Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA). Two species of social wasps, Polistes simillimus and Mischocyttarus cearensis, were recorded for the first time in state of Paraiba.

Abstract:
Neurocysticercosis is the central nervous system infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of Taenia solium. It is related to poor hygiene habits and sanitation; although Northeast is poorest Region of Brazil, it has been always stated as a non-endemic area. After the installation of computed tomography (CT) service, the incidence of neurocysticercosis began to raise in neurology services in Campina Grande PB, a city where people from the interior Paraíba can find specialized medical facilities. We analyse 5,883 CT record of the TomoHPI Computed Tomography Service from August 1993 to December 1995, observing 1.02% suggestive neurocysticercosis cases and classified them according to sex and age, precedence and socioeconomic condition. Distribution of cases according to age is homogeneous until the age of 50 (mean: 28.36 years old). Men and women are equally affected. Urban areas inhabitants represented 83.33%. Residents of Campina Grande represented 48.33% and 48.34% were residents of cities around Campina Grande (until 50 Km around) and other cities of Paraíba State. Fifty-eight patients were dependent to public health care system. We conclude that neurocysticercosis seems to be endemic in Paraíba State, demanding a more detailed study to determine its incidence/prevalence.

Abstract:
In this study, we investigated the presence of gastrointestinal helminths in 97 captive birds (Psittaciformes and Accipitriformes) necropsied between June and December 2011 in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. Forty-three birds were infected. Psittaciformes were infected by nematode Ascaridia hermaphrodita (97.6%) and cestodeRaillietina sp. (2.4%). A. hermaphrodita was found in all species of parrots andRaillietina sp. was found only in Amazona aestiva. A. hermaphrodita was the cause of death, by intestinal obstruction, in 14 of the 40 birds investigated. Accipitriformes were infected by nematode Synhimantus(Synhimantus) rectus (100%) and acantocephalan Centrorhynchus tumidulus (50%). In Brazil, Diopsittaca nobilis and A. aestiva are reported for the first time as hosts of A. hermaphrodita andRaillietina sp., respectively. We concluded that Psittaciformes and Accipitriformes in captivity are affected by nematodes, cestodes and acanthocephalans and that implementation of control measures is essential.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Currently, plastics are recognized as a major pollutant of the marine environment, representing a serious threat to ocean wildlife. Here, we examined the occurrence and effects of plastic ingestion by sea turtles found stranded along the coast of Paraíba State, Brazil from August 2009 to July 2010. Ninety-eight digestive tracts were examined, with plastic found in 20 (20.4%). Sixty five percent (n = 13) of turtles with plastic in the digestive tract were green turtles (Chelonia mydas), 25% (n = 5) were hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata), and 10% (n = 2) were olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea). More plastic was found in the intestine (85%) than in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. We observed complete blockage of the gastrointestinal tract due to the presence of plastic in 13 of the 20 turtles that had ingested plastic. No correlation was found between the curved carapace length (CCL) and the number or mass of the plastic ingested items. Significant differences were found between the intake of hard and soft plastic and the ingestion of white/transparent and colored plastic, with soft and white/transparent plastics being more commonly ingested. This study reveals the serious problem of plastic pollution to sea turtles at the area.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed framework to use the spatiotemporal kriging to model the space-time variability of precipitation data in Paraíba, which is located in the northeastern region of Brazil (NEB). The NEB is characterized by an irregular, highly variable distribution of rainfall in space and time. In this region, it is common to find high rates of rainfall at locations adjacent to those with no record of rain. Paraíba experiences localized periods of drought within rainy seasons and distinct precipitation patterns among the state’s mesoregions. The mean precipitation values observed at several irregularly spaced rain gauge stations from 1994 to 2014 showed remarkable variations among the mesoregions in Paraíba throughout the year. As a consequence of this behavior, there is a need to model the rainfall distribution jointly with space and time. A spatiotemporal geostatistical methodology was applied to monthly total rainfall data from the state of Paraíba. The rainfall data indicate intense spatial and temporal variabilities that directly affect the water resources of the entire region. The results provide a detailed spatial analysis of sectors experiencing precipitation conditions ranging from a scarcity to an excess of rainfall. The present study should help drive future research into spatiotemporal rainfall patterns across all of NEB.

Abstract:
The process of conquest and colonization of the north area of the São Francisco River began in 1535, with the foundation of Olinda, and was completed in the eighteenth century, with the consolidation of the dominion over the backlands. Starting from Pernambuco, this process allowed the formation, beyond the division of the area into several captaincies, of a colonial region, consolidating the economic and political hegemony of Pernambuco over the conquered lands, both on the coast and, later, inland. After the expulsion of the Dutch, such hegemony would be expressed politically through the preeminence of the Pernambuco government over the others, and economically through the control exercised by Recifes mercantile group. This group, by controlling the trade with Portugal with the establishment of an \"indirect monopoly\" over the whole region, appropriated itself part of the gains generated by the Colonial System to the detriment of local producers and small merchants. The creation in 1759 of the Companhia Geral de Pernambuco e Paraíba (General Company of Pernambuco and Paraiba) was actually an attempt to transfer profits from the \"indirect monopoly\", both to the company\'s shareholders and indirectly to the metropolis. The Company would thus cause important changes in the mercantile dynamics of the region, which would influence the political struggles of the early nineteenth century.

Brazil has one of the largest dairy cattle herds in the world. However, despite being among the major world producers of milk, the national dairy industry is quite heterogeneous. Part of some regions such as the Brazilian Northeast, is still under development to meet the standards of quality and quantity and get the competitive market, such as the municipality of Pombal, to be located in the backlands of Paraiba, the present study area, which is recognized statewide for its dairy potential. In this context, this study aims to make an analysis of the sustainability of dairy cattle of Pombal, in their institutional (technological), social, economic and environmental aspects. For the execution of this study, site visits and application of semi-structured questionnaires, 50 dairy farmers, belonging to thirty- two rural areas of this municipality were necessary. From the responses, indicators were calculated using the method of UNDP / UN (1998), whose results ranged from 0 (zero) to 100 (one hundred) and were divided into four grades of sustainabilities: critical, poor , good or excellent. Then applied to the mathematical formula called GSI (Global Sustainability Index) developed by González and Carvajal (2002 ). When the result of the IGS is less than or equal to 50%, the activity is presented in the field of unsustainability will be more sustainable and close to 100% . The results presented in the institutional dimension ratios of 37%, the social dimension in 58%, both considered bad grades sustainability. In the environmental dimension ratios of 60%, both considered good grades for sustainability and ultimately the economic dimension with grade 36% in bad for the sustainability level . The calculated IGS was 47.74% which can not be considered sustainable. Thus, the results identify that the dairy cattle production, Pombal, needs attention, most public policies for the sector , not only in economics but also in social and environmental dimensions, enabling improvements in the quality of life of those involved, but also to conserve natural resources.

Abstract:
A risk analysis of drought and an assessment of irrigation requirements were ascertained for a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop in Parana, Brazil, using 28 years of historical weather data. Two soil moisture models, The Versatile Soil Moisture Budget (VB4) and SWACROP models, were compared using data from six wheat cropping periods. The models showed good performance in predicting soil moisture contents, but SWACROP underpredicted soil evaporation and runoff, and VB4 did not separate evapotranspiration into its components. Therefore, a new soil moisture model was proposed. In the new model, a Darcy type equation was used to calculate fluxes in the soil profile, and inputs of daily rainfall and potential evapotranspiration were partitioned during the day using simple disaggregation methods. Crop growth input parameters, interacting with weather and soil inputs, were used to calculate a detailed output of the water balance components. The validation of the model showed predictions of soil water contents and evapotranspiration in close agreement with field data.
A crop yield model based on the stress day index approach was selected from an evaluation of seven crop-water production functions using wheat field data. This model was combined with the soil moisture model to assess risks of drought during the establishment and development of non-irrigated wheat crops with different planting dates. Irrigation management strategies were simulated to identify net system delivery capacities and application frequencies that promote maximum yield with minimum requirements of water. Yield reductions in non-irrigated wheat due to water stress varied between 16%, for early plantings, to 50%, for late plantings. Maximum yields with minimum applied water was obtained by the use of low intensity (5 to 10 mm) and frequent (3 to 5 days) irrigations. System delivery capacity requirements varied from 1.5 to 3.0 mm/day, according to planting dates.

Abstract:
The effect of planting date on yield was studied in Parana State, Brazil where five tropical hybrids of maize were planted at 14 planting dates over three growing seasons at five locations. Soil water holding characteristics and meteorological variables were measured at each location. The water release curve for each soil was determined, using a power function. Corn heat units were calculated and used to measure the phenological development of each hybrid. This information, along with meteorological data, was used in a mathematical model to simulate plant growth over each growing period. Meteorological data from 1976 to 1986 were employed to simulate yield data for 14 planting dates during each growing season at four locations for each hybrid. The average production curve for the 10 growing seasons was compared to the curve observed for the 1986/87 growing season for three of the five hybrids. Thermal requirements appeared as an efficient tool to predict corn developmental stages, and the power function fit satisfactorily the observed soil data. The predicted curve, representing a 10-year average, showed that the designed model accounted for the major cultural and environmental factors that affect yield at each location, being sensitive enough to detect differences among genotypes. Comparisons between predicted and observed curves showed that they had the same shape.

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the quality of Primary Education and Teacher Education in Brazil, and particularly the State of Paraiba. Quality of education is an elusive concept to measure, and Brazil is not the only country in the world where one can find critics of the educational system who believe that the quantitative expansion of the system has necessarily brought about a reduction in quality. Chapter 1.0 sets out the basic problems which are viewed as related directly to the internal and external efficiency of the educational system. A number of problems which face primary education in Latin America are identified in Chapter 2.0. These problems were mainly produced by the rapid expansion of the system to meet increased social demands and to satisfy important human rights of the people of Latin America. Chapter 2.0 also reviews conferences, especially those held in Latin America, which have suggested solutions to these problems. Chapter 3.0 looks at teacher education in Latin America and Brazil, focusing on its internal and external aspects. Chapter 4.0 shows a number of features of the educational system of Brazil which were obstacles to the effective implementation of the proposed reforms. These obstacles were the result of the historical development of the system of education, and the traditions which had been developed since colonization. Chapter 5.0 sets out the problems which have been raised by the policy adopted after 1964, when a military regime took power. It is against this background of national policy that the teacher preparation policies in the various states of Brazil must be understood. Chapter 6.0 deals with some of the determinants of teacher education development in Paraiba State, including a brief summary of the socio-economic situation and its implications for the educational system. Through these early chapters three major shortcomings of teacher preparation in Brazil have been identified: 1) The number of teachers prepared, 2) The unsuitability of the training for conditions internal to the schools (curricula/teaching methods etc.), and 3) The unsuitability of the training for conditions external to the schools (the social condition of entrants to the schools). Chapter 7.0 seeks to investigate how the trainee teachers in Paraiba perceive the training they receive, from these various aspects. Finally, Chapter 8.0 summarises the findings of earlier chapters, and sets out recommendations for the revision of teacher education to improve the quality of teacher education, and hence of education at the primary level, in Paraiba specifically, and more generally in the whole of Brazil.

Abstract: The necessity of Public Political that give support to a sustainable development, in the current times is a premise that must be followed. The control and the aiming of the actions of the man on this space must be with priority. Areas as the hydrographic basins must be seen with bigger detailing, therefore in general, the same ones present a capacity of support to the transformations of the landscape, of limited character. Transformations these that many times affect the regimen of waters in a hydrographic basin, therefore the conditions of life quality of a region. The public power comes presenting projects that many times only aim at the ¿development¿ while the place demands one referring sustainable politics to the environment. These problems can be visualized in many regions in Brazil, between them the region of the hydrographic basin of Rio Paraíba do Sul- São Paulo - Brazil. This area presented and comes presenting a dynamics of transformation very sped up. Scene of the several economic cycles (coffee, cattle milkmaid and industrialization) the region of the Valley of the Paraíba counts on an increasing demand for hydric resources, however, what if it observes is the lack of public politics effective of regulation of the urban expansion and control of the use of the natural resources, water. In this direction, aiming at to supply the material lack of information and, also of a methodology of assist to the territorial planning elaborated this work. On the basis of the theoretical principles of the landscape ecology and according to participation in the process of infiltration of each element that composes this scene (Relief, Vegetal Covering, Rainfall, Soil and Geology).
This research discuss about the historic conditions of the authorship construction and Lourdes Ramalho's work, going through the authoress' intellectual and life path, descriting the relationships kept with her conteporaneans, with the books that she read and how she read to think about the way how this authores printed in her texts the Northeast and northeast people idea. Think about the authorship as a social and historic place, means at same time to discuss the gap and the contradictions that also make-up itself, that's why the need of have discussed the idea of folk while place of great distance from the authoress' place, the feminine model that herself makes as a place of male-processing of the women on this region, and the end, the making of the lagh in her text as a placealso, about inversion of the rules of the northeast culture uses. Base don the foucaultian proposal of speech analysis, that suggest to see the relations of power in the speech lines, the truths and conflicts that are parto f all the writtings, on the treory about genus of Butler and Foucault that thin about the sex, the bodies, the gens as other dimensions of the speech that inspire the (re)thinking of the social identities, culturally and sexually that mark a way of seeing and making a northeast, it can be found on this text another way for reading the work f Lourdes Ramalho and everything that she creates, to (re)see the place that ocupies he northheaster authorship and the naturalization that defines it, because our regional identities of this genus neutralized the northeaster culture and everything produced on it, producing silences, denying the difference, the difference of being a man, womwn, authoress and work on Northeast, in ando ut this space.

The Campos Gerais, of the Parana State, Brazil, are the austral limit of occurrence of the domain Savannah in Brazil. Delimiting this region as studing area, they had been located and georreferenced 30 remainders of savannah, being then submitted to floristic and phytophysiognomies analysis. About 50% of the remainders sense presented physionomies of the "savannah stricto senso", distributed more to the north of the region, as well as the physionomies "cerradão" (13%), exclusive of the portions most northern. The “rupestre savannah” (17%) was more present to the long one of the reverse of the Devoniana Scarp, while the "campo sujo" (with fácies of savannah) presented more southern distribution, with 20% of the occurrences. The variable ambient had been selected for analysis: temperature, evapotranspiration, altimetry, declivity, angle of solar exposition, types of soil and linear distance of water´s courses, aiming at to detect a standard of current distribution. It was perceived for the analyses that some variables are overlapped. It can be explained by the biogeographic standard, that previously defined the original phytophysiognomies of the State, as well as the standard of current use, since this influences the savannah’s occurrence, composition and structure. After the data analysis was possible to note that, independently of the altimetry, when the declivities are smaller there´s a significant savannah absence, appointing to its replacement by pastures and farmings, restricting its permanence by areas evaluated as lesser economic value. The temperature, evapotranspiration and proximity with water´s courses, for this region, do not seem to act as ambient filter. A significant correlation was observed for soils, with clear preference of the savannah for litolic neosoils and latossoils.

Abstract:
Financial education is one of the most recent themes in the scope of public policies, given its elevated capacity to generate positive external effects (LUSARDI, 2006). The challenge created with its integration into the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) in 2020 hints at this relevance. It became the apex among several areas of knowledge, by becoming part of a series of subjects included in the Primary and High School Education curriculum. The idea is that this movement leads to a reformulation of the Basic Education curriculum through the efforts of all subnational entities, aimed at preparing pedagogical projects at schools that include financial education (BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL, 2013).

Abstract:
<p>The Desengano bridge, with 11 spans and 171.5 meters in length, transverses the Paraíba do Sul River between the cities of Vassouras and Valença in the State of Rio de Janeiro and was part of the Dom Pedro II Railroad (EFDPII). The bridge has exceptional historical value because it is one of the very first metallic structures built in Brazil and was inaugurated in 1865 by Emperor D. Pedro II himself. The bridge, originally made up of three lines of stringers, supports a railroad and a carriageway. In this century, one of the stringer lines was removed to make room for the modern railway bridge supported by the original pillars. The two remaining stringer lines, with a reinforced concrete slab, were intended for road traffic. The objective of this work is to present the particulars of the restoration and structural reinforcement completed in 2017 on the roadway. A physical- chemical analysis revealed that the metallic structure is composed of wrought iron whose brittle nature prevents the use of welded connections. The slab of reinforced concrete, with carbonation and corrosion problems, was submitted to an alkalinization process. The entire superstructure was suspended for leveling and installation of elastomeric bearings. The careful removal of specific rivets made screw connections possible for structural reinforcement. The nine arch spans were reinforced with a new bracing system, Dywidag bars arranged parallel to the original rods, and tensioned by indirect prestressing. The two lattice girder spans were reinforced with monostrand tendons prestressed just below the lower flange. The recovery of steel areas, lost through corrosion, was accomplished by concrete adhesion. The reinforced structural elements were designed so as not to affect the architecture of the historical patrimony.</p>

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between the expansion of the Family Health Strategy and hospitalizations for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions in older adults. METHODS: This ecological study was conducted from June to October 2019. The units of analysis were all states in the Northeast of Brazil, and the historical outline included the period from 2008 to 2018. Data on the coverage of the Family Health Strategy and hospitalizations were extracted from the Primary Care Information and Management System and the Hospital Information System. For the association analysis, Spearman coefficients (r) were calculated at a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) using STATA, version 13.0. An absolute r value above 0.5 was considered satisfactory. RESULTS: From 2008 to 2018, the Northeast Region recorded a 13.33% increase in the Family Health Strategy coverage and a 27.44% decrease in hospitalization rates. Coverage did not expand in the states of Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe; in the latter, there was also no significant reduction in hospitalization rates. There was a correlation between the expansion of the Family Health Strategy and a reduction in hospitalizations for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions in the states of Alagoas (r = −0.9636), Bahia (r = −0.9545), Ceará (r = −0.8884), and Piauí (r = −0.7000). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that increased coverage of the Family Health Strategy is associated with greater effectiveness of primary care. However, other intervening factors in hospitalization rates for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions should be considered, such as the health care model and socioeconomic context.

Abstract:
Nowadays, natural disasters have become much frequently in Brazil, having as result serious consequences such as social, economic and environmental damages and losses. The aim of this paper is evaluate the actions provided by TRANSPETRO in emergency span occurred in OSPAR right-of-way due to intense and heavy rains that occurred in March 2011 in the Serra do Mar Hills, in Parana State, southern Brazil. The geotechnical phenomenon affected three pipelines: • OSPAR Oil Pipeline, which is responsible for supplying the Presidente Getulio Vargas Refinery - REPAR with crude oil; • OPASC Oil Pipeline: used for distribute derivatives from REPAR to Santa Catarina State; • GASBOL Gas Pipeline: supplies Southern Brazil with natural gas from Bolivia. After several days of heavy and steady rain, on 11th March 2011 the rainfall reached the peak of 180mm in 24 hours what generated more than 50 geotechnical and hydrotechnical occurrences in OSPAR stream at Serra do Mar crossing,. The actions, necessary to reducing the hazard, required stopping of oil pipelines, decrease of internal pressure in the gas pipeline, rearrangement of internal staff and machinary structure, and support of external companies structure, such as partnerships companies and new emergency contracts including heavily aircraft support, staffs and machines. The emergency works, carried out in the occasion, leaded to the return of pipeline operations in less than five days. The total pipeline security was established with the stabilization of more than 50 geotechnical and hydrotechnical occurrences.
