Abstract:
Parallel asynchronous iterative algorithms exhibit features that are extremely well-suited for Grid computing, such as lack of synchronization points. Unfortunately, they also suffer from slow convergence rates. In this paper we propose using asynchronous methods as a coarse-grained preconditioner in a flexible iterative method, where the preconditioner is allowed to change in each iteration step. A full implementation of the algorithm is presented using Grid middleware that allows for both synchronous and asynchronous communication. Advantages and disadvantages of the approach are discussed.

AbstractÜresin and Dubois’ paper “Parallel Asynchronous Algorithms for Discrete Data” shows how a class of synchronous iterative algorithms may be transformed into asynchronous iterative algorithms. They then prove that the correctness of the resulting asynchronous algorithm can be guaranteed by reasoning about the synchronous algorithm alone. These results have been used to prove the correctness of various distributed algorithms, including in the fields of routing, numerical analysis and peer-to-peer protocols. In this paper we demonstrate several ways in which the assumptions that underlie t

The present study deals with the solution of the obstacle problem defined in a three-dimensional domain. In order to solve a large-scale obstacle problem, the use of parallelism is necessary. In this work we present a parallel synchronous iterative algorithm to solve this problem and its asynchronous version. For the considered problem, the convergence of parallel synchronous and asynchronous algorithms is analysed in a general framework. Finally, computational experiments on GRID’5000, the French national grid, are presented and analysed. They allow us to compare both synchronous and asynchro

In this paper we are interested in studying the development of parallel algorithms to solve nonlinear wave equations. Both synchronous and asynchronous algorithms contexts are considered. The solver is based on the multisplitting Newton method that provides a coarse-grained scheme. Experiments are carried out in both homogeneous and heterogeneous grid environments. According to the configuration environment, the behaviors of parallel synchronous and asynchronous algorithms are analyzed. Parallel Block Jacobi (PBJ) [1] is an asynchronous spatial domain decomposition with application in solving the neutron transport equation due to its extendibility to massively parallel solution in unstructured spatial meshes (grids) without the use of the computationally complex and expensive sweeps required by the Source Iteration (SI) method in these applications. [2] However, PBJ iterative methods suffer a lack of iterative robustness in problems with optically thin cells, [1] which we have previously demonstrated to be a consequence of PBJ’s asynchronicity. In VLSI circuits, signal delays play an important role in design, timing verification and signal integrity checks. These delays are attributed to the presence of parasitic resistance, capacitance and inductance. With increasing clock speed and reducing feature sizes, these delays will be dominated by parasitic inductance. In the next generation VLSI circuits, with more than millions of components and interconnect segments, fast and accurate inductance estimation becomes a crucial step. A generalized approach for inductance extraction requires the solution of a large, dense, complex linear syst
