Abstract:

This book offers a comprehensive linguistic evaluation of the 376 personal names attested in the roughly 600 Aramaic inscriptions of Hatra, the famous Northern Mesopotamian city that flourished in the Parthian age, between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. This study benefits from the publication of many Hatran inscriptions during recent decades, which have yielded rich onomastic data, and some fresh readings of these epigraphic sources. This work is subdivided into three main parts: an “Onomastic Catalogue”, a “Linguistic Analysis”, and a “Concordances Section”. The “Catalogue” is organized as a list of entries, in which every name is transliterated, translated (whenever possible), discussed from an etymological perspective, provided with onomastic parallels, and accompanied by its attestations in the Hatran Aramaic corpus. The “Catalogue” is followed by a “Linguistic Analysis” which describes, firstly, the principal orthographic, phonological, morphological, and syntactical features of Hatran names. The linguistic discussion proper is followed by a semantic taxonomy of the names which make up the corpus and an overview of the religious significance of the theophoric names. “Charts of Concordances” end the book.

Abstract:

Corpus data have emerged as the raw data/benchmark for several NLP applications. Corpus is described as a large body of linguistic evidence composed of attested language use. It may be contrasted against sentences constructed from metalinguist reflection upon language use, rather than as a result of communication in context. Corpus can be both spoken and written. It can be categorized as follows: monolingual, representing one language; comparable, using multiple monolingual corpora to create a comparative framework; parallel corpora, wherein, corpus of one language is considered, and the data obtained, is translated in other languages. The choice of corpus depends on the research question/the chosen application. Adding linguistic information can enhance a corpus. Analysts, human or mechanical, or a combination achieves annotation. The modern computerized corpus has been in vogue only since the 1940s. Ever since, the volume of corpus banks have risen steadily and assumed an increasingly multilingual nature.

Abstract:

This article attempts to locate MT (machine translation) in the contemporary context, while identifying its recent trends and themes. The 1990s were marked by the growing clout of empirical approaches, using increasingly available amounts of raw data in the form of parallel corpora. An appropriate instance is statistical MT, depending on bilingual corpus, but wherein, the translation depends on statistical modeling of the word order of target language and of source-target word equivalences. Example-based MT involves matching inputs against actual databases and identifying close matches. Successful MT, especially when attempting translation into languages marking gender of pronouns, those that have zero-anaphora contents, interpretation of anaphora assumes paramountcy. Regarding spoken-language MTs, coupling speech-to-text front-end and text-to-speech, the other way, is inadequate other than rigidly formal languages. More versatile operations such as dealing with dialogues, would involve greater complexities.

Disgrace was the exercise of the sovereign will, usually independent of the regular judicial process, and it could be justified on the basis of both divine right and the ancient maxim that the king was the fount of all justice. Yet despite the emergence of a new model of disgrace in the seventeenth century, obedience did not necessarily mean acceptance. This chapter examines the progress of a parallel critique of the practice of disgrace founded on the law. From their inception, lettres de cachet were denounced as arbitrary, even despotic, and these ideas developed into a much broader critique of arbitrary punishment driven by judges and many victims of disgrace that by the reign of Louis XVI would lead to calls for their abolition. As this chapter demonstrates, the campaign for a French version of habeas corpus would sap the ideological justification of disgrace and prepare the ground for Revolution.

Abstract:

The present chapter provides a comparative study of canonical tag questions in Hong Kong, Indian, and Singapore English on the basis of their respective spoken components of the International Corpus of English (ICE). These three postcolonial Asian Englishes represent different phases in the evolutionary model of variety-formation proposed by Schneider (2003, 2007). The present-day manifestation of their shared historical input variety British English is used as a basis of comparison. Differences across these four varieties in terms of forms, functions, and frequencies of tag questions are described and interpreted from a variational-pragmatic perspective. The findings reveal considerable intervarietal differences, with the variety that has furthest progressed in Schneider’s model, Singapore English, displaying preferences that diverge markedly from the patterns of use in British English. This suggests that a process of ‘pragmatic nativization’—in parallel to well-documented processes of structural nativization—can be observed in the development of New Englishes.

This chapter is a theory-informed quantitative corpus study of infinitival fronting in a type of Infinitival V2 construction found in Old-Frisian and Middle-Dutch. The quantitative investigation evidences that infinitival fronting is the non-finite counterpart of the embedded subjunctive constructions. Formal I-language arguments are provided to demonstrate that the emergence of laten-support (the parallel of English do-support) and the decline of subjunctives are related to one parameter change in CP/TP. Before the fifteenth century, in Dutch, subjunctives and infinitives found in the relevant constructions move out of TP reaching C or Mod. In the second half of the fifteenth century, infinitives are being reanalysed as sitting in T. Hence, in infinitival fronting constructions, a separate verbal auxiliary form (laten) is created as a spellout of C. Although Laten-support is a transient phenomenon (‘failed change’), it has been the trigger of the reanalysis of auxiliaries as ordinary verbs in Dutch.

Exploring the roots of four keywords for our times: Europe, the citizen, the individual, and the people, Mariarosaria Gianninoto’s and James Underhill’s Migrating Meanings (2019) takes a broad view of conceptualization by taking on board various forms of English, (Scottish, American, and English), as well as other European languages (German, French, Spanish & Czech), and incorporating in-depth contemporary and historical accounts of Mandarin Chinese. The corpus-based research leads the authors to conclude that the English keywords are European concepts with roots in French and parallel traditions in German. But what happens to Chinese words when they come into contact with migrating meanings from Europe? How are existing concepts like the people transformed? This book goes beyond the cold analysis of concepts to scrutinize the keywords that move people and get them excited about individual rights and personal destinies. With economic, political and cultural globalisation, our world is inseparable from the fates of other nations and peoples. But how far can we trust English to provide us with a reliable lingua franca to speak about our world? If our keywords reflect our cultures and form parts of specific cultural and historical narratives, they may well trace the paths we take together into the future. This book helps us to understand how other languages are adapting to English words, and how their worldviews resist ‘anglo-concepts’ through their own traditions, stories and worldviews.

How can literature enhance, parallel or reassess the scientific study of the mind? Or is literature instead limited to the ancillary role of representing cognitive processes? Beckett and the Cognitive Method argues that Beckett’s narrative work, rather than just expressing or rendering cognition and mental states, inaugurates an exploratory use of narrative as an introspective modeling technology (defined as “introspection by simulation”). Through a detailed analysis of Beckett’s entire corpus and published volumes of letters, the book argues that Beckett pioneered a new method of writing to construct (in a mode analogous to scientific inquiry) “models” for the exploration of core laws, processes, and dynamics in the human mind. Marco Bernini integrates models, problems, and interpretive frameworks from contemporary narrative theory, cognitive sciences, phenomenology, and philosophy of mind to make a case for Beckett’s modeling practice of a vast array of processes including: the (narrative) illusion of a sense of self, the hallucinatory quality of inner speech, the dialogic interaction with memories and felt presences, the synesthetic nature of inner experience and mental imagery, the developmental cooperation of language and locomotion, the role of moods and emotions as cognitive drives, the layered complexity of the mind, and the emergent quality of consciousness. Beckett and the Cognitive Method also reflects on how Beckett’s “fictional cognitive models” are transformed into reading, auditory, or spectatorial experiences generating through narrative devices insights on which the sciences can only discursively or descriptively report. As such, the study advocates for their relevance to the contemporary scientific debate toward an interdisciplinary co-modeling of cognition.

This book explores the syntactic and semantic change of three types of constructions in the history of Spanish and Portuguese: (i) complex DPs with clausal adjunction (el hecho de, o facto de), (ii) complex prepositions/complementizers and complex connectives (sin embargo de, sem embargo de; so pena de, sob pena de), and (iii) complex predicates containing light verbs (dar consejo de, dar conselho de). While these constructions are syntactically different, they are all clause-taking expressions containing a noun followed by the functional preposition de (“of”). This book is the first work to examine them together through a systematic comparative corpus study. This makes it possible to tease apart individual from general changes and to focus on the chronological clustering of changes involving complex constructions in both languages. The development of these constructions has multiple causes related to the noun. Specifically, the reanalysis of the entire expression is affected both by the meaning of the noun and by changes in complementation patterns that affected nouns (as well as verbs and adjectives) in the 16th–17th centuries in both languages. By studying mechanisms of language change and their outcomes in two sister languages, the book addresses questions like: How do complex constructions evolve? How does the meaning of the noun change when considered in isolation and when compared to the meaning of the whole construction? How do syntactic categories change over time? Studies of closely related languages, which can reveal distinct developments occurring in parallel over time, provide a crucial test case for theories of language change.

The first monograph on Gregory of Nyssa’s entire corpus of works on the Trinity and the economy of Christ, this book argues that the numerous explicit parallels and links among the works suggest that the corpus is best studied synoptically. Despite differences of theme and intention, Gregory’s Trinitarian works center on the baptismal confession of Matthew 28:19, which Gregory reads as Christ’s own creed, and which, on his reading, presents an account of all divine activity as being accomplished in the Spirit. Gregory argues against both Eunomius and the Pneumatomachians that the Spirit’s act of giving the divine life in baptism should not be deemed inferior to the act of creation; Gregory’s metaphysical and epistemological arguments are subservient to this theme. The book also proposes a developmental reading of Gregory’s works Christ’s saving economy. Rather than assessing Gregory’s Christology by reference to a single systematic model, the book’s second part shows how the governing metaphors and models by which Gregory articulated his position shifted as he responded to various criticisms and addressed the various feasts of the Christian liturgical cycle. An integrated study of the various types of writing in Gregory’s corpus—from public orations proclaimed before imperially sponsored councils to festal homilies to extended treatises—the book offers new insights into the role of a leading bishop in the Theodosian empire and connects important parts of his literary output with the tasks given to him by the councils meeting in Constantinople in the years AD 381–3.

Caliphs and Merchants: Cities and Economies of Power in the Near East (700–950) offers fresh perspectives on the origins of the economic success of the early Islamic caliphate, identifying a number of previously unnoticed or underplayed yet crucial developments, such as the changing conditions of labour, attitudes towards professional associations, and the interplay between the state, Islamic religious institutions, and the economy. Moving beyond the well-studied transition between the death of Justinian in 565 and the Arab-Muslim conquests in the seventh century, Caliphs and Merchants focuses on the period of assertion of the Islamic world’s identity and authority. While the extraordinary prosperity of Near Eastern cities and economies in 700–950 was not unprecedented when one considers the early imperial Roman world, the aftermath of the Arab-Muslim conquests saw a deep transformation of urban retail and craft, which marked a break from the past. This book explores the mechanisms through which these changes resulted from the increasing involvement of caliphs and their governors in the patronage of urban economies, alongside the empowerment of enriched entrepreneurial tāǧir from the ninth century, as well as how they served the Arab-Muslim elite to secure their power and legitimacy. This book combines a wide corpus of literary sources in Arabic with original physical and epigraphic evidence. The approach is both comparative and global. The Middle East is examined in a Eurasian context, parallels being drawn between the Islamic world and Western Christendom, Byzantium, South East Asia, and China.

This book reconstructs the social world of upper middle-class Belfast during the time of the city’s greatest growth, between the 1830s and the 1880s. Using extensive primary material including personal correspondence, memoirs, diaries and newspapers, the author draws a rich portrait of Belfast society and explores both the public and inner lives of Victorian bourgeois families. Leading business families like the Corrys and the Workmans, alongside their professional counterparts, dominated Victorian Belfast’s civic affairs, taking pride in their locale and investing their time and money in improving it. This social group displayed a strong work ethic, a business-oriented attitude and religious commitment, and its female members led active lives in the domains of family, church and philanthropy. While the Belfast bourgeoisie had parallels with other British urban elites, they inhabited a unique place and time: ‘Linenopolis’ was the only industrial city in Ireland, a city that was neither fully Irish nor fully British, and at the very time that its industry boomed, an unusually violent form of sectarianism emerged. Middle-Class Life in Victorian Belfast provides a fresh examination of familiar themes such as civic activism, working lives, philanthropy, associational culture, evangelicalism, recreation, marriage and family life, and represents a substantial and important contribution to Irish social history.

Abstract:

<p>El paralelo 38º continúa siendo el último vestigio de Guerra Fría en el mundo. Una nación dividida en dos Estados, uno democrático y el otro totalitario, que se han consolidado en el tiempo como entidades políticas diferentes entre sí, aunque paradójicamente ambos cuentan con ministerios de unificación. En la península de Corea yace un estado de guerra latente por la ausencia de un tratado de paz y la precariedad de un armisticio de fuego firmado en 1953. Esto, sumado al desarrollo nuclear de Pyongyang, a la presencia militar de Estados Unidos en Seúl y al hecho de que se trata de la zona de seguridad directa de China, hace que la región sea uno de los focos de mayor importancia en la geopolítica del siglo XXI.</p><p>Este libro es el resultado de una investigación que contó con el apoyo de la Fundación Corea y que se desarrolló en el marco del Centro de Estudios de Asia en la Escuela de Gobierno de la Universidad Austral. El punto de partida de la investigación es comprender la orientación de países de América Latina hacia la península coreana, prestando particular atención al vínculo con Pyongyang. Si bien no existe algo similar al “principio de una sola China” en la cuestión coreana, la tendencia verifica que la mayoría de los países de la región concentran sus vínculos con Seúl. No hay investigaciones que se hayan centrado en explicar esa situación, y con la intención de revertir esa falta de análisis desde la academia esta obra busca explicar la percepción de las elites políticas en América Latina y el Caribe respecto de los vínculos con la República Popular Democrática de Corea (RPDC). En esta primera investigación tomamos dos casos de estudio. Por un lado, la Argentina, que mantuvo el doble reconocimiento entre 1973 y 1977 pero que tras la ruptura con Pyongyang no ha iniciado ninguna tentativa de normalización de relaciones diplomáticas. Por otro lado, Brasil, que fue el primer país de la región en tener embajadas en ambos lados del paralelo 38º y se presenta como un interlocutor de ambas Coreas con la región.</p>

Abstract:

Presenting a range of Neo-Latin poems written by distinguished classical scholars across Europe from c. 1490 to c. 1900, this anthology includes a selection of celebrated names in the history of scholarship. Individual chapters present the Neo-Latin poems alongside new English translations (usually the first) and accompanying introductions and commentaries that annotate these verses for a modern readership, and contextualise them within the careers of their authors and the history of classical scholarship in the Renaissance and early modern period. An appealing feature of Renaissance and early modern Latinity is the composition of fine Neo-Latin poetry by major classical scholars, and the interface between this creative work and their scholarly research. In some cases, the two are actually combined in the same work. In others, the creative composition and scholarship accompany each other along parallel tracks, when scholars are moved to write their own verse in the style of the subjects of their academic endeavours. In still further cases, early modern scholars produced fine Latin verse as a result of the act of translation, as they attempted to render ancient Greek poetry in a fitting poetic form for their contemporary readers of Latin. The interdependence and interaction of classical scholarship and poetry is known since the time of the classical world itself. This multi-author volume offers a series of Neo-Latin poems from all over Europe which are either by classical scholars themselves or closely connected with classical scholarly publication; it provides the original text, an English translation and detailed commentary for each piece included, in order to present this fascinating material for a modern audience. The volume is introduced by a contextualising introduction. The texts range in date from the end of the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth, and are richly diverse in character: for the earlier period there are studies of the liminary poems for Nicolo Perotti’s 1489 Cornu copiae, the supplementary elegiacs supplied by Paolo Marsi for his 1482 edition of Ovid’s Fasti, the early verse of the great printer Aldus Manutius (c.) 1450–1515) and the great scholar Piero Vettori (1499–1585), all Italians, and the poems of the Spanish grammarian Antonio de Nebrija (1444–1522) and the French Greek scholar Jean Dorat (1508–1588). After 1600, we have studies of the Latin poems of the Franco-Scottish scholar and novelist John Barclay (1582–1621), the learned Dutchman Janus Dousa (1545–1604), the liminary poems for Birgitte Thott’s 1658 Seneca translation into Danish, Martial-inspired epigrams by the Cambridge don James Duport (1606–1678), and occasional poems by the Göttingen professor Johann Matthias Gesner (1691–1761). Most recent is the Latin poetry of the Italian poet and academic Giovanni Pascoli (1855–1912).

Abstract:

Cuando hablamos de optimización en el ámbito de las ciencias de la computación hacemos referencia al mismo concepto coloquial asociado a esa palabra, la concreción de un objetivo utilizando la menor cantidad de recursos disponibles, o en una visión similar, la obtención del mejor objetivo posible utilizando todos los recursos con lo que se cuenta. Los métodos para encontrar la mejor solución (óptima) varían de acuerdo a la complejidad del problema enfrentado. Para problemas triviales, el cerebro humano posee la capacidad de resolverlos (encontrar la mejor solución) directamente, pero a medida que aumenta la complejidad del problema, se hace necesario contar con herramientas adicionales. En esta dirección, existe una amplia variedad de técnicas para resolver problemas complejos. Dentro de estas técnicas, podemos mencionar las técnicas exactas. Este tipo de algoritmos son capaces de encontrar las soluciones óptimas a un problema dado en una cantidad finita de tiempo. Como contrapartida, requiere que el problema a resolver cumpla con condiciones bastante restrictivas. Existen además un conjunto muy amplio de técnica aproximadas, conocidas como metaheurísticas. Estas técnicas se caracterizan por integrar de diversas maneras procedimientos de mejora local y estrategias de alto nivel para crear un proceso capaz de escapar de óptimos locales y realizar una búsqueda robusta en el espacio de búsqueda del problema. En su evolución, estos métodos han incorporado diferentes estrategias para evitar la convergencia a óptimos locales, especialmente en espacios de búsqueda complejos. Este tipo de procedimientos tienen como principal característica que son aplicables a cualquier tipo de problemas, sin requerir ninguna condición particular a cumplir por los mismos. Estas técnicas no garantizan en ningún caso la obtención de los valores óptimos de los problemas en cuestión, pero se ha demostrado que son capaces de alcanzar muy buenos valores de soluciones en períodos de tiempo cortos. Además, es posible aplicarlas a problemas de diferentes tipos sin mayores modificaciones, mostrando su robustez y su amplio espectro de uso. La mayoría de estas técnicas están inspiradas en procesos biológicos y/o físicos, y tratan de simular el comportamiento propio de estos procesos que favorecen la búsqueda y detección de soluciones mejores en forma iterativa. La más difundida de estas técnicas son los algoritmos genéticos, basados en el mecanismo de evolución natural de las especies. Existen diferentes tipos de problemas, y multitud de taxonomías para clasificar los mismos. En el alcance de este trabajo nos interesa diferenciar los problemas en cuanto a la cantidad de objetivos a optimizar. Con esta consideración en mente, surge una primera clasificación evidente, los problemas mono-objetivo, donde existe solo una función objetivo a optimizar, y los problemas multi-objetivo donde existe más de una función objetivo. En el presente trabajo se estudia la utilización de metaheurísticas evolutivas para la resolución de problemas complejos, con uno y con más de un objetivo. Se efectúa un análisis del estado de situación en la materia, y se proponen nuevas variantes de algoritmos existentes, validando que las mismas mejoran resultados reportados en la literatura. En una primera instancia, se propone una mejora a la versión canónica y mono-objetivo del algoritmo PSO, luego de un estudio detallado del patrón de movimientos de las partículas en el espacio de soluciones. Estas mejoras se proponen en las versiones de PSO para espacios continuos y para espacios binarios. Asimismo, se analiza la implementación de una versión paralela de esta técnica evolutiva. Como segunda contribución, se plantea una nueva versión de un algoritmo PSO multiobjetivo (MOPSO Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization) incorporando la posibilidad de variar dinámicamente el tamaño de la población, lo que constituye una contribución innovadora en problemas con mas de una función objetivo. Por último, se utilizan las técnicas representativas del estado del arte en optimización multi-objetivo aplicando estos métodos a la problemática de una empresa de emergencias médicas y atención de consultas domiciliarias. Se logró poner en marcha un proceso de asignación de móviles a prestaciones médicas basado en metaheurísticas, logrando optimizar el proceso de asignación de móviles médicos a prestaciones médicas en la principal compañía de esta industria a nivel nacional.
