Abstract:
This research is concerned with the optimisation of multi-modal numerical problems using genetic algorithms (GAs). GAs use randomised operators operating over a population of candidate solutions to generate new points in the search space. As the scale and complexity of target applications increase, run time becomes a major inhibitor. Parallel genetic algorithms (PGAs) have therefore become an important area of research. Coarse-grained implementations are one of the most popular models and many researchers are concerned primarily with this area. The island model was the only one class of parall

Abstract:

Abstract:
In power plants using large utility coal-fired boilers for generation of electricity the coal is pulverised in coal mills and then it has to be pneumatically transported and distributed to a larger number of burners (e.g. 30-40) circumferentially arranged in several rows around the burning chamber of the boiler. Besides the large pipework flow splitting devices are necessary for distribution of an equal amount of pulverised fuel (PF) to each of the burners. So called trifurcators (without inner fittings or guiding vanes) and ''riffle'' type bifurcators are commonly used to split the gas-coal p

Sudden cardiac death following cardiac arrest is a major killer in the industrialised world. The leading cause of sudden cardiac death are disturbances in the normal electrical activation of cardiac tissue, known as cardiac arrhythmia, which severely compromise the ability of the heart to fulfill the body's demand of oxygen. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is the most deadly form of cardiac arrhythmia. Furthermore, electrical defibrillation through the application of strong electric shocks to the heart is the only effective therapy against VF. Over the past decades, a large body of research has
