Abstract:
Central topics pertaining to the current debate in the philosophy of action concern the distinction between practical and theoretical reasoning, and the nature of a conclusion in a process of reasoning. In this debate the reference to the Aristotelian reflection is recurrent. In four passages from his works, that is MA. 7, 701a7-b1, EN. H 5, 1147a24-31, EE. B 11, 1227b23-33 and EN. Г 5, 1112bl1-24, Aristotle explores some important aspects of practical reasoning making a parallel with the logical structures of theoretical reasoning. In particular he finds specific analogies between practical and theoretical syllogism, practical and theoretical necessity, deliberation and analysis, action and demonstration. In spite of its specifications, the activity of reason shows its unity. Aristotle considers and deepens the constitutive ingredients of theoretical reasoning in the contest of practical philosophy. The comparison between practical and theoretical reasoning has consequently an expositive purpose, because it supports Aristotle's treatment of action theory.

Abstract A spread in PG(n, q) is a set of lines which partition the point set. A parallelism is a partition of the set of lines by spreads. A parallelism is uniform if all its spreads are isomorphic. Up to isomorphism, there are three spreads of PG(3, 4) – regular, subregular and aregular. Therefore, three types of uniform parallelisms are possible. In this work, we consider uniform parallelisms of PG(3, 4) which possess an automorphism of order 2. We establish that there are no regular parallelisms, and that there are 8253 nonisomorphic subregular parallelisms. Together with the parallelisms known before this work, this yields a total of 8623 known subregular parallelisms of PG(3, 4).

Ad Oxford, l'approccio all'economia politica era fortemente condizionato dalla riflessione critica sulle proposte epistemologiche avanzate da Dugald Stewart nel suo Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The hybrid nature of the human–plant suicidal souls explored through the character of Pier delle Vigne in Inferno XIII exhibits unique characteristics in the Comedy’s first cantica. For centuries the Wood of the Suicides has demanded the attention of readers and scholars alike and yet the interplay and structure of their coexisting identities remain subject to lively debate. As an analytical tool, Dante’s encounter with Pier delle Vigne is compared to the wave–particle duality of light, a peculiar phenomenon of quantum physics. Indeed just as the suicides are at once true human and true plant, light behaves simultaneously as wave and particle depending on the experiment performed. The two complementary descriptions of light are mirrored in the duality of Pier delle Vigne, allowing a schematic restating of the canto emphasizing the multisensory interaction between Dante and the sinner. The hybrid nature of the damned soul thus becomes an expression of the contrasting judgments of Dante–theologian and Dante–poet on this character. Furthermore, the analogy shows how the anonymous suicide from Florence introduced at the end of the canto embodies the ambivalent perspective of Dante on the city of Florence itself.

Parallelism in Arabic is investigated through data from three Arabic varieties: Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Classical Arabic (CA), and (Yemeni) Adeni Arabic (AA). Parallelism in Arabic is examined at different linguistic levels: morphological and lexical, syntactic, and textual. Parallelism seems to be inherent and is more likely in writings that aim to convince or restate theses and topics. However, the occurrence of parallelisms is genre-specific, purpose-oriented, and situation/context-dependent. It is predictable in sermons, public speeches/addresses, and opinion writing. Apparently, parallelism, particularly beyond reduplication and lexical level, triggers resonance in the mind of the listener/reader, retaining the respective information in short term memory and thus marking it for emphasis.

Abstract:
As a video coding standard, H.264 achieves high compress rate while keeping good fidelity. But it requires more intensive computation than before to get such high coding performance. A Hierarchical Multi-level Parallelisms (HMLP) framework for H.264 encoder is proposed which integrates four level parallelisms - frame-level, slice-level, macroblock-level and data-level into one implementation. Each level parallelism is designed in a hierarchical parallel framework and mapped onto the multi-cores and SIMD units on multi-core architecture. According to the analysis of coding performance on each level parallelism, we propose a method to combine different parallel levels to attain a good compromise between high speedup and low bit-rate. The experimental results show that for CIF format video, our method achieves the speedup of 33.57x-42.3x with 1.04x-1.08x bit-rate increasing on 8-core Intel Xeon processor with SIMD Technology.

We reduce CR-structures on smooth elliptic and hyperbolic manifolds of CR-codimension 2 to parallelisms thus solving the problem of global equivalence for such manifolds. The parallelism that we construct is defined on a sequence of two principal bundles over the manifold, takes values in the Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms of the quadric corresponding to the Levi form of the manifold, and behaves "almost" like a Cartan connection. The construction is explicit and allows us to study the properties of the parallelism as well as those of its curvature form. It also leads to a natural class of "semi-flat" manifolds for which the two bundles reduce to a single one and the parallelism turns into a true Cartan connection. In addition, for real-analytic manifolds we describe certain local normal forms that do not require passing to bundles, but in many ways agree with the structure of the parallelism.

Abstract:
According to Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), direct translation refers to the transposition of source language message element by element into target language based on either structural parallelism or metalinguistic parallelism. However, both parallelisms are not realized by the student translators so that sometimes they apply inappropriate direct translation. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the quality of students’ direct translation procedures according to Larson (1994) in Indonesian rendering of English folklore drama script. This study employed descriptive qualitative method with the involvement of respondents for quality assessment. The result reveals that 445 direct procedures consisting of 45 borrowing translations, 18 calque translations, and 382 literal translations produce 249 accurate, 64 sufficiently accurate, and 132 less accurate translations. Dealing with clarity, 314 are considered as clear, 71 sufficiently clear, and 60 less clear translations. In addition, the analysis of naturalness results 285 natural, 51 sufficiently natural, 58 less natural, and 51 unnatural translations. The problems derived from students’ direct procedures are the use of unacceptable loan word and word by word translation which can create misinterpretation. Therefore, the students should increase their awareness of the structural and metalinguistic parallelisms between source and target language.

AbstractSparse grids are the basis for efficient high dimensional approximation and have recently been applied successfully to predictive modelling. They are spanned by a collection of simpler function spaces represented by regular grids. The sparse grid combination technique prescribes how approximations on a collection of anisotropic grids can be combined to approximate high dimensional functions. In this paper we study the parallelisation of fitting data onto a sparse grid. The computation can be done entirely by fitting partial models on a collection of regular grids. This allows parallelism over the collection of grids. In addition, each of the partial grid fits can be parallelised as well, both in the assembly phase, where parallelism is done over the data, and in the solution stage using traditional parallel solvers for the resulting PDEs. Using a simple timing model we confirm that the most effective methods are obtained when both types of parallelism are used.

AbstractAs noted by many scholars, the Wisdom of Solomon contains elements typical of both Greek and Hebrew literature. Numerous studies list specific Greek figures in the book, often making only passing reference to the Hebrew poetic features, referring to them with the single term parallelismus membrorum. But, Wisdom's form is a good deal more complex than these synopses suggest. Parallelism is realized in a number of ways in the Hebrew scriptures and its manifestation in this apocryphal book is a unique combination of different patterns. The present study aims at a detailed description of Wisdom's structure through a close study of the parallelism and verse length of the book's first 15 verses, and through a comparison of these patterns with those in Hebrew poems.

Advertising forms an essential component of the business field, where the competition fight is the significant marker. Advertisements can give a psychological hint to consumers so that they purchase a product by using image ideology association. More than any other sign or symbol system, language employs a strong effect on consumers and their behaviors. The paper aims to apply Leech’s foregrounding theory on English advertisements on TIME and clarify the “language games,” including deviation and parallelism, so as to figure out its effects on market promotion. The author employs case analysis to examine the theoretical foundation, then presents and exhibits parallelisms and deviations in advertising using classification standards and standard examples. It is found that advertisement language parallelism and deviation is one of the essential linguistic attention-grabbing methods. With the help of the foregrounding, information contained in the advertisement acquires a new, often unexpected sound: at the minimum of the text, the maximum expression.

Abstract:

Abstract. The relation between Islam and Javanese tradition is seen at a case of a pilgrimage and ritual of Labuhan at a beach of Parangkusuma, Yogyakarta. This ritual is well-known, and even became a tourism agenda, so is tha pilgrimage. The legend of a myth character like Kanjeng Ratu Kidul was engaged firmly with the kings and citizens of Mataram, specially Yogyakarta palace. In the ritual of Labuhan and pilgrimage (usually holds on Tuesday and Kliwon of Friday) in Parangkusuma showed two interested phenomenons about Islam and Kejawen interaction. There was an opinion that Islam and Kejawen interaction is a parallelism. This article used a descriptive method to explain that phenomenon. The conclusion is, the relation occurred in the practice of ritual of Labuhan and pilgrimage is a parallelism, what brought a certain understanding about Javanese, spesifically in relation with religion.

Abstract:
So far religious encounters in migratory settings have been largely examined in relation to the pluralizing of religious cultures, the emerging of syncretisms as well as religious conversions. However, many migrants choose to live more than one religion at the same time and integrate themselves into several religious communities with different and sometimes opposing religious agendas. This article concentrates on the Haitian migrant community in Montreal, Canada. On the basis of the parallelisms between Vodou and Catholicism it first examines the parallels between different religious concepts and performances and second, the significance of particular Vodou spirits which act as mediators between different cultures. The article questions the idea of exclusive belongings and highlights the meaning of space as a differentiating factor in the diversification of religious meanings and messages in multicultural settings. Keywords: Vodou, Haitian diaspora, space, spirit possession, syncretism, religious parallelism

Abstract:
This paper looks at how changes of coordinates on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold induce homogeneous linear transformations on its tangent spaces. We see that a pseudo-orthonormal frame in a given tangent space is the basis for a set of Riemann normal coordinates. A Lorentz subgroup of the general linear transformations preserves this pseudo-orthonormality. We borrow techniques from the methodology of non-linear realizations to analyze this group-subgroup structure. “Parallel maps” are used to relate tangent space at different points. “Parallelisms” across a finite region of the manifold may be built up from them. These are used to define Weitzenböck connections and Levi-Civita connections. This provides a new formulation of teleparallel gravity, in which the tetrad field is viewed as a field-valued group element relating the coordinate basis to the frame basis used in defining a parallelism. This formulation separates the metric degrees of freedom from those associated with the choice of parallelism. The group element can be combined by matrix multiplication with Lorentz transformations of frame or with other Jacobian matrices. We show how this facilitates a new understanding of inertial forces and local Lorentz transformations. The analysis is also applied to translations of the coordinates. If they are constant across spacetime, this has no effect on the tangent space bases. If the translation parameters become fields, they induce general linear transformations of the coordinate basis; however, the tetrad components can only be expressed in terms of translations on a flat spacetime.

Abstract:
The paper is devoted to the concept of reason in Husserl’s transcendental henomenology. By analyzing the concepts and terminology, the author shows the specific of reason and transcendentality in phenomenology. The specific of phenomenological transcendentality is in the possibility to prescribe to it individual features in contrast to Kantian transcendentality, which is abstract, ideal and universal. This specific of transcendentality leads to the concept of reason as a “net”, which covers the whole area of mind, including thinking, feeling, willing. Therefore, phenomenological reason is divided into logical, practical and axiological. The paper presents two kinds of that specification of reason in phenomenology – parallelism (Parallelismus) and interweaving (Verflechtung). The author assumes that Husserl uses the former model to demonstrate the system relationships of the selected areas of the reason, while the latter model is responsible for describing the functioning of this system.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional-integrated focal-plane array image processor chips offer new opportunities to implement highly parallelised computer vision algorithms directly inside sensors. Neural networks in particular can perform highly complex machine vision tasks, and therefore their efficient implementation in such imagers are of significant interest. However, studies with existing pixel-processor array chips have focused on the implementation of a subset of neural network components—notably convolutional kernels—on pixel processor arrays. In this work, we implement a continuous end-to-end pipeline for a convolutional neural network from the digitisation of incoming photons to the output prediction vector on a macropixel processor array chip (where a single processor acts on group of pixels). Our implementation performs inference at a rate between 265 and 309 frames per second, directly inside of the sensor, by exploiting the different levels of parallelism available.

Previous research has argued that the null argument surfacing in ASL is comparable to its Spanish counterpart — agreement licensed pro (e.g. Rizzi 1986). This analysis has been applied to both subjects and objects of either all verb classes (Bahan et al. 2000) or agreeing verbs only (Lillo-Martin 1991). In this squib, I demonstrate that the nature of both the null subject and the null object in ASL does not neatly parallel that of Spanish, taken here to be a representative of consistent null subject languages (Biberauer et al. 2010).

Abstract:
The author follows the common division of Husserl’s ethics into early and late periods, and gives a description of each period, indicating their leitmotifs, goals and objectives. The early stage of Husserl’s ethics is viewed from two aspects – transcendental and disciplinary. It is shown that the early stage is characterized by the homogeneity of the three kinds of mind (theoretical, practical and axiological). The consequence of this homogeneity is the parallelism (Parallelismus) of logic and ethics and Husserl’s intention to construct ethics following the pattern of logic. The late stage is characterized by the intention of Husserl to arrange the interaction of practical philosophy with specific problems of actual practice. Husserl did not turn away from acute social problems and even participated in a kind of patriotic propaganda. The presented review shows how heterogeneous in structure and original in its content and genesis is the ethical thought of Husserl.

Abstract:
Textuality in antiquity differs significantly from that of modern Western culture in which the text exists as a fixed, idealized abstraction. In antiquity reading was speaking, and stichography is a visual representation of this interface between speech and writing. Stichography’s spatialization displays scribes’ perception of the spoken text including the concomitants of oral performance. Stichography also reflects scribes’ attentiveness to the readership’s experience with the performed or inscribed text. Scribes interacted with compositions as authors, adapting them according to the exigencies of specific performance events. As a result, the transmission of a specific written layout can supersede parallelismus membrorum; nevertheless, parallelism is a constitutive device in the majority of stichographic texts. The demarcation of sense units elicits two symbiotic social uses, both of which are also implied by the content of the canon. Stichographic texts provide a formatted reference point that is styled to facilitate oral performance and pedagogy.

Abstract:
Computer simulations are widely used to design and evaluate air traffic systems. A fast time simulation capability is essential to effectively explore the consequences of decisions in airspace design, air traffic management, and operations. A parallel simulation approach is proposed to accelerate fast time simulation of air traffic networks that exploits both temporal and spatial parallelisms. A time-parallel algorithm is first described that simulates different time intervals concurrently and uses a fix up computation that exploits the scheduled nature of commercial air traffic to address the problem of dependencies between time segments. The time-parallel algorithm is then extended with a space-parallel simulation approach using Time Warp to simulate each time segment in parallel thereby increasing the amount of parallelism that can be exploited. The time and space-parallel algorithms are evaluated using a simulation of the U.S. National Airspace System (NAS). Experimental data is presented demonstrating that this approach can achieve greater acceleration than what can be achieved by exploiting time-parallel or space-parallel simulation techniques alone.

Abstract:
This essay discusses progress and directionality, both in nature, in science and in society, treating as its starting-point the reflections, parallelisms and comparisons of Ruse’s essay, ‘A Threefold Parallelism for Our Time? Progressive Development in Society, Science and the Organic World’, but reaching substantially different conclusions. The essay thus ranges over progress and directionality in the world of natural evolution, in the sciences and the humanities, and in history and society. It defends non-relative progress in science and the humanities, criticising here both the approach to these disciplines of the strongly evolutionary epistemology of Hull and the more moderate evolutionary epistemology of Ruse. It further defends the possibility of progress and directionality in history and society, and also, following Rolston, in the course of evolution within the world of nature, where the kind of directionality to be found has multiple directions rather than being unilinear. Subsequently it relates conclusions about these fields to theological reflections (characteristic of Judaism, Christianity and Islam) about the creation of nature and society by a value-loving intelligence.

Abstract:
The shared-memory programming model can be an effective way to achieve parallelism on shared memory parallel computers. Historically however, the lack of a programming standard using directives and the limited scalability have affected its take-up. Recent advances in hardware and software technologies have resulted in improvements to both the performance of parallel programs with compiler directives and the issue of portability with the introduction of OpenMP. In this study, the Computer Aided Parallelisation Toolkit has been extended to automatically generate OpenMP-based parallel programs with nominal user assistance. We categorize the different loop types and show how efficient directives can be placed using the toolkit's in-depth interprocedural analysis. Examples are taken from the NAS parallel benchmarks and a number of real-world application codes. This demonstrates the great potential of using the toolkit to quickly parallelise serial programs as well as the good performance achievable on up to 300 processors for hybrid message passing-directive parallelisations.
