Abstract:

Abstract:
The study compared delay discounting in adult humans using two different methods of adjustments. Both methods used hypothetical choices of monetary outcomes. One involved adjustments using a fixed sequence of ascending or descending amounts, the other used a bisection algorithm in which the changes in amounts varied as a function of the subjects' choices. Two magnitudes of delayed outcomes were used: $1,000 and $10,000. A within subject design was used to compare indifference curves and discounting measures across the two adjusting procedures. Twenty four subjects were divided in two groups an

Space – time data modeling problem is analysed. Often spatial data sets are relatively small, and the points, where observations are taken, are located irregularly. When solving spatial task, usually we are interpolating or estimating the spatial average. Time series data usually are used to predict future values. Meanwhile, the space - time tasks combines both types of tasks. Few original modeling methods of spatial time series are proposed. The proposed methods firstly analyzes the univariate time series, and after removing temporal dependence, spatial dependence in the time series of residu

Abstract:
The variability of water-column absorption due to colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and phytoplankton in coral reef regions is the focus of this study. Hydrographic and CDOM absorption measurements made on the Bahamas Banks and in Exuma Sound during the spring of 1999 and 2000 showed that values of salinity and CDOM absorption at 440nm were higher on the banks (37.18 psu, 0.06 m^-1), compared to Exuma Sound (37.04 psu, 0.03 m^-1). Spatial patterns of CDOM absorption in Exuma Sound revealed that plumes of CDOM-rich water flow into Exuma Sound from the surrounding banks. To examine absorpt

The aim of this work was to develop a methodology whereby inertial measurement units (IMUs) could be used to obtain accurate and objective gait parameters within typical developed adults (TDA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). The thesis comprised four studies, the first establishing the validity of the IMU method when measuring the vertical centre of mass (CoM) acceleration, velocity and position versus an optical motion capture system (OMCS) in TDA. The second study addressed the validity of the IMU and inverted pendulum model measurements within PD and also explored the inter-rater reliability

Abstract:
Number of individuals undergoing lower limb amputation around the world is increasing every year due to vascular diseases or complications associated with conditions such as diabetes and trauma. Limb loss has a profound impact on individual’s physical, mental and vocational abilities, resulting in the degradation of amputees’ quality of life (QOL). Following an amputation, prescription of prosthetic devices serves as an important step in improving the amputees’ QOL. Restoring functional attributes of human gait is one of the key objectives of lower limb rehabilitation. A number of studies have

This thesis provides a mathematical framework for the development of efficient control strategies that satisfy the charters of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which aims to maintain pest population at a low impact level. This mathematical framework is based on a dynamical system approach and comprises the construction of mathematical models, their theoretical study, the development of adequate schemes for numerical solutions and reliable procedures for parameter identification. The first output of this thesis is the construction of trap-insect spatio-temporal models formulated via advection-d

In this thesis we study the problem of estimation of parametric covariance and variogram functions for spatial and spatio- temporal random processes. It has the following principal parts. Variogram Estimation: We consider the "weighted" least squares criterion of fitting a parametric variogram function to second order stationary geo-statistical processes. Two new weight functions are investigated as alternative to the commonly used weight function proposed by Cressie (1985). We discuss asymptotic convergence properties of the sample variogram estimator and estimators of unknown parameters of p

Albatross populations are currently in decline around the world. Survival and reproduction of these large pelagic birds depends mostly on the conditions they encounter in their marine environment. Their ability to range far across ocean basins exposes them to a variety of anthropogenic threats. It is thus crucial to understand spatial and temporal patterns in the distribution and habitat use of each albatross species during different stages of their annual cycle in the context of seasonally changing demands as well as environmental constraints, in order to develop effective conservation measur
