In addition to an introduction, the present book contains 14 chapters. Most of them represent elaborated text versions of contributions that were presented by the authors at a (nearly) eponymous conference held in Freiburg, Germany, on the 17.10.2014. As an adult, magic is typically seen as being “pure fantasy” (Rosengren and Hickling 75), while Bever argues that magic is something lost to time and materialism,

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that the category Near-Death Experience (NDE) emerged in the late-twentieth century, and is structured by the discourses of 'Medicine' and 'Science', and the wider discursive factors of the 'Spiritual Marketplace'. Within NDE literature, the experiences of people coming out of their bodies in Operating Theatres, and then travelling to other realms, are considered to have parallels in the accounts of mystics, shamans, and religious visionaries of other cultures and other times. Against this, I argue that the category of the NDE does not "articulate the same field of disco

Abstract:
Abstract Experiences of possession are interpreted differently according to cultural and psychological contexts. Parapsychology attempts to understand the phenomena associated with possession at the level of generalized quantum theory. In fundamentalist Christian circles the human soul is understood within a dualistic framework in which demonic and divine powers are engaged in a constant battle for control. Neo-shamanistic movements seek to employ the spiritual powers of ancestors in healing. Medical-psychological diagnosis describes states of trance and possession as dissociative disorders, b
