Background and aims – Cola, the second largest genus of the Malvaceae-Sterculioideae comprises 100–135 small to large tree species confined in nature to African forests, though cultivated elsewhere. Current species distribution ranges show that the genus is highly diverse in the seasonally wet forests along the Nigeria-Cameroon border, including the Korup National Park (KNP). In this paper we examine the diversity and abundance of Cola in KNP compared to other forests for which comparable data are available. We also describe two novelties in the genus. Methods –

Central African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) have declined by an estimated 62% between 2002 and 2011, largely as a result of poaching for the illegal ivory trade. They are now considerably more threatened than the Vulnerable African savannah elephant (Loxodonta Africana), and effective monitoring of refugia populations is essential to inform management and conservation plans to secure a future for this megafaunal species. Our forest elephant dung-based distance-sampling survey of the 5,260 km2 World Heritage Dja Faunal Reserve (DFR) in Cameroon systematically covered 298.2 km of line

Although the avifauna of KNP is incompletely known, it is already among the most ornithologically diverse lowland forest sites i n Africa. The avian diversity of the KPA is increased by the montane forest bird species of the Rumpi Hills Forest Reserve (RHFR) and the Nta Ali Forest Reserve (NAFR). The lowland and montane forests of the KNP/KPA are very important to the conservation of African forest birds. Four species found in the Korup area are considered globally thre

Litterfall was similar in both forests with annual estimates of 9.00 and 8.33 t ha-1 yr-1 for LEM and HEM forests respectively. Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) uses a mercury target to generate neutrons. When the powerful 1.4 MW, 60Hz proton beam hits the target, a strong pressure wave propagates in the mercury and into the vessel wall due to the rapid temperature rise in mercury. These pressure waves induce cavitation damage on the target container and high stresses, which both limit the lifetime of the target. Since October 2017, helium gas has been injected into the mercury flow in order to mitigate the negative effects of pulse-induced pressure waves. The preliminary strain me
