Abstract:
Background This study aimed to use a concept mapping methodology to develop a European framework of the needs of parents/guardians (P/G) for supporting athletes combining sport and education (dual career, DC). Methods By means of a concept mapping methodology, 337 French, Irish, Italian, Portuguese, and Slovenian parents sorted and rated 80 potential statements associated to parenting DC athletes. Results Five distinct clusters emerged: 1. P/G’ roles, needs and awareness to support athletes, including 22 statements (mean:3.7; range: 3.2–4.2 pt); 2. Requirements for effective planning of DC pathway, including 19 statements (mean:3.7; range: 3.2–4.5 pt); 3. Educational opportunity, including 13 statements (mean:3.5; range: 3.1–4.0 pt); 4. Policy and provision for DC, including 19 statements (mean:3.7; range: 3.1–4.2 pt); and 5. Athletes’ lifestyle & self-management, including 7 statements (mean:4.0; range: 3.5–4.5 pt). Estimates of effect size (Partial eta-squared) were calculated for ANOVAs to assess the degree of variability on the statement importance ranking as the dependent variable accounted for by the demographic data. The concept mapping showed good validity (stress value: 0.11) and high reliability (rSHT: 0.99, rSHM: 0.98; rRR:0.98). One-third of the statements indicated differences (p<0.05) in relation to the P/Gs’ gender and the athletes’ education level, competition level and sport typology. Conclusion In synthesizing the opinions, experience and needs of P/Gs of DC athletes the present framework provided sound theoretical underpinnings to inform the development of an online educational programme for empowering parenting DC athletes (https://edu.empatiasport.eu/eng/), as well as be a foundation for future Pan-European DC research on how these statements interact with each other, in different European contexts.

Abstract:
This paper aimed to explore how parents give meaning to their involvement in the remote learning of their children amid the COVID-19 crisis. Based on Husserlian transcendental approach in phenomenology, the researcher sought to explore the world of 12 parents, specifically mothers, from Mindanao, Philippines through online interviews. The result revealed 36 significant statements forming four emergent themes. These themes underscore the experience of parental involvement in the remote learning of their children amid crisis as 1.) journeying through a myriad of changes; 2.) connecting with the child physically and emotionally; 3.) experiencing multifaceted difficulties in the process; and 4.) responding to the call of new challenges of parenting. These themes are further elaborated through textural and structural descriptions. A statement of the essence of the lived experience of parents as a result of intuitive integration is offered. Aside from theoretical contributions, the outcomes gained in this paper offer several future practical insights for crisis planning in education.

Abstract:
This study assessed pediatric residents’ reported knowledge of and self-confidence in identifying/treating 8 vaccine-preventable diseases. Pediatric residents nationwide (n = 385) reported (1) if they had previously diagnosed measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, varicella, and/or polio; (2) their comfort level in treating these diseases; (3) the likelihood of identifying symptoms; and (4) 16 disease-related statements as true/false. More than 25% of residents were not comfortable treating 5 of the 8 diseases. More than 25% reported themselves as unlikely/extremely unlikely to identify symptoms of 3 of these diseases. Third- or fourth-year residents did not feel more confident in identifying disease symptoms than first-year residents, except for pertussis ( P ≤ .01). True/false statement accuracy ranged from 56.8% correct (polio) to 94.6% correct (pertussis). Most residents (73.3%) were “extremely concerned” regarding parental vaccine refusal, and 96.0% felt that they would benefit from receiving more information. Increased emphasis on this subject in residency education is essential for the management of potential disease outbreaks.

Abstract:
Abstract The bionormative and heteronormative models of parentage has been challenged by multiple factors: a cultural shift, which has led to the decline of marriage and the development of cohabitation, a technological evolution, which has made it possible to develop new reproductive technologies, and a legal change that has led to the recognition of same-sex relationships. However, the extent of this development has not yet been fully assessed. Rather than simply adapting the rules designed according to an outdated model, it would be better to break with it permanently. This article proposes to build a new system based on intent and care, on the basis of case law and doctrinal proposals from several countries. Drawing from the best interests of the child standard, it operates a distinction between the status of parent and progenitor: whatever the circumstances of the birth (natural procreation, adoption, assisted reproduction technology, or surrogacy) and the nature of the parents' relationship (same-sex or heterosexual, married or unmarried, engaged in a romantic relationship or not), parentage would be based on a formal statement and the question of genetics limited to the determination of identity and the right to know one's origins.

Full text
Abstract:
The taxonomic history of Phragmipedium × grande is traced to show that its current treatment as the cross between P. longifolium and P. humboldtii is untenable. According to our interpretation of the holotype and other materials prepared from specimens of the original cross, the name Phragmipedium × grande, as well as its counterpart, the orchid grex Phragmipedium Grande, have to be treated as the cross between P. longifolium and a species of sect. Phragmipedium from South America. The similarity of the flowers obtained crossing P. longifolium with P. caudatum and with P. warszewiczianum prevents, at this stage, a definitive statement about the original parentage of P. × grande, so it is advisable to treat it as the hybridizer originally stated, a cross of P. longifolium with the pollen of P. caudatum. This nothospecies cannot be formed under natural conditions, as the geographic ranges of the parental species do not overlap. The natural hybrid between Phragmipedium longifolium and P. humboldtii, previously reported from Panama and recorded here for the first time from Costa Rica, is described as P. × talamancanum. Full illustrations of the new nothospecies are provided.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and document parentage statements and paired stela found on Maya monuments or portable objects. While the existence of parentage statements, within the Maya text, has been known since the late 1970s, no thesis or major research project has ever been published pertaining to this class of glyphs within the Maya script. In 1977 Christopher Jones is credited with the discovery of parentage statements in Maya hieroglyphic texts (Jones 1977). His discovery was followed by a detailed analysis of parentage statements by Floyd Lounsbury, Peter Mathews, and Linda Schele (1977). They introduced most of the known parentage statements and detailed their use in the hieroglyphic texts. While their work, which introduced parentage statements, in general, is cited regularly as the all-encompassing source of information about parentage statements, it remains unpublished. This thesis provides a source for all new and previous work done on parentage statements and insight into possibly why parentage statements were used by the Classic Maya. An analysis of 253 archaeological sites containing a total of 2473 glyphic monuments was conducted as part of this thesis. Justin Kerr's online vase and photo collections were also checked for parentage statements on portable objects and ceramic vessels. Parentage statements were found on 225 monuments and 70 portable objects bringing the total to 295 different monuments with parentage statements. Each parentage statement is identified and transcribed phonetically. The usage of each parentage statement and its variants are then mapped through time. Also introduced in this thesis is the death of a parent glyph commonly known as the Winged Capped Ajaw Death Phrase. An analysis of its usage demonstrates that it refers to the death of a parent. Paired stelae were analyzed as another possible form of parentage statements. This thesis tests three hypotheses on why parentage statements were used. They included ancestor worship, political legitimacy, and heir designation. The weaknesses and strengths of each hypothesis are demonstrated through case studies. Lastly, the appendices include source material for each site and monument researched as part of this thesis.

Abstract:
Despite site-based decison making (SBDM) educational mandates, research determined the virtual exclusion of parents, family, and/or home as co-authoritative voice in Texas public school district mission statements. Qualitative analysis determined six parent roles within 155 inclusive mission statements through rhetorical deconstruction, a text-based grammatical evaluation procedure; quantitative analysis determined no significance between inclusive and exclusive districts in factors of size, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The implications of this study add further support to the growing parental insistence for greater educational decision-making options: ie., home schooling, voucher system, and charter schools.

Abstract:
To examine parental attitudes toward sexuality education in the home and school, sealed packets were distributed to fifth and seventh graders (N = 609) for each to deliver home to a parent. Parents were asked to express level of agreement with a series of attitude statements and to indicate the content and timing considered appropriate for sexuality instruction in the home and school. Analysis of 246 returned surveys (40% response rate) indicated that most parents trust the school to address human sexuality, though a sizeable minority of parents hold very conservative attitudes toward sexuality instruction in this setting. Results suggested that the majority of parents view school-based instruction as supplemental to instruction in the home.

This study aimed to investigate and find strategies that might improve School A's Grade 12 results through the principal's visionary leadership. The theoretical framework that informed this study was the school principal as a visionary leader, which plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is improved by providing necessary resources for teachers and learners and creating a sound culture of teaching-learning. Upper Echelon Theory's effectiveness is based on strategic choices by visionary leadership and school performance principles that served as the theoretical framework. A qualitative research approach was used for this study, as it allowed the researcher to conduct in-depth interviews with ten school principals in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, and examined relevant documents to collect data. The research indicates that most schools acknowledge the importance of visionary leadership and proved that there were many execution gaps in implementing the intervention strategies that needed to be addressed, such as lack of effective visionary leadership, lack of unity, support to teachers, monitoring of teaching and learning and recruiting quality teachers in Grade 12. The study recommends that school principals need to implement more effective leadership, strategic planning and implementation of policy, communication, parental involvement accountability, effective monitoring and placement of quality teachers to teach Grade 12 learners.

Kabutu-Njekwa, Catherine. "Grade 9 teachers’ and learners' perceptions of the causes of poor mathematics performance and possible interventions in Durban's Ethusini Circuit." Diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25956.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated teachers' and learners' perceptions of the causes of poor performance in Mathematics among Grade 9 learners in Durban's Ethusini Circuit of KwaZulu-Natal Province. By using a phenomenographic research design, a sample of 15 Grade 9 learners who take Mathematics, one Grade 9 Mathematics teacher and one Mathematics head of department was selected purposively from three high schools in the Ethusini Circuit. The three schools are one former model C school, one ordinary government school and one private school. Focus group and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from the participants. The data were analysed by transcribing the focus group and semi-structured interviews; thereafter, the transcriptions were coded into themes and categories. The results of this study indicate that teachers and learners perceive that poor performance in Mathematics in Grade 9 is due to CAPS curriculum challenges, such as overloaded and advanced content, and insufficient time to complete the curriculum. Parental support, English (first additional language) as a language of learning and teaching, methods of teaching (such as the talk and chalk method), and learners' negative attitude towards Mathematics were also cited. From these findings, recommendations for revisiting the CAPS curriculum and other areas of need, as well as topics for future research were suggested.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the concept of supportive parental responses to childhood anxiety symptoms, a key concept in addressing family accommodation. Supportive responses are defined as parental responses that convey to the child two messages: a message of acceptance and validation of the child’s anxiety, and a message of confidence in the child’s ability to cope with and to tolerate anxiety-related distress. When parents combine both acceptance and confidence they are being supportive of the child’s anxiety. The chapter includes several examples, clinical anecdotes, suggested texts for explaining the concept of support to parents, and tools for practicing formulating supportive statements that parents can use with their child.

Abstract:
This chapter maps the event of the alternative school policy of the Toronto School Board District understood as neoliberalism, and specifically racial neoliberalism. This analysis asserts how power and force operate within educational equity attempts and illustrates the necessary but insufficient attempts at educational equity that rely solely on moral and epistemological, including statistical, arguments. The chapter focuses on the material and ontological aspects of the policy environment affecting the event. The spatial and temporal analysis of this chapter underscores how objects and subjects easily interchange positions depending on the location of the analysis, including how (1) policy ‘activists’ simultaneously are policy ‘subjects’; (2) school mission statements are simultaneously efforts to develop a brand within quasi educational markets; (3) discourses of parental choice are conflated into contradictory discourses of educational entrepreneurialism and equity and, (4) moral statements against racism are erased through pressures to maintain the dominant policies and practices of colourblind (neoliberal) multiculturalism.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how Deir al-Medina fathers protected their daughters. It begins with a discussion of how a Deir al-Medina girl who married a workman from the village would remain close to her family, and from time to time would flee their husbands back to the parental home. This is evident in a limestone ostracon involving the workman Telmontu, who complained to the chief workman Khonsu and the scribe Amunnakhte son of Ipuy about his son-in-law, evidently in defense of his daughter. The chapter considers another case of a father coming to the rescue of his daughter: an ostracon containing a statement by the workman Horemwia to a person who seems to be his daughter. Finally, it cites another ostracon containing a case of theft from some storehouses.

Abstract:
Sociologists and demographers explain late childbearing by the transformation of the life values of modern women. This is considered as one of the reasons for the decline in the birth rate. Our study aims to reveal perceptions of the relationship between career and family in the life strategies of working Russian women by using factor analysis. We collected data in a sociological survey of working women living in the Ural region. We asked respondents to rate 10 statements about work, family and children. We constructed 3-factors model of Russian women’s perceptions of combining family and career. Then we used correlationanalysis to assess the relationship between these factors and the social and demographic parameters of the respondents. We concluded that the use of factor analysis made it possible to model a wide range of Russian women’s perceptions of combining family and career. Considering the results obtained may contribute to improving the regulation of interaction of two important societal spheres of professional and parental activities and create conditions for increasing the birth rate in Russia.
