The present study calls upon self-determination theory and the concept of maternal gatekeeping to further the understanding of fathers’ early experience of parenthood. It aims to explain fathers’ parental and marital satisfaction, as well as their participation in child care by considering mothers’ motivations, attitudes and beliefs. Ninety-three couples expecting the birth of their first child completed pre and postnatal questionnaires. A path model suggests that introjected and externally regulated extrinsic maternal motivations, but not their endorsement of maternal gatekeeping attitudes and beliefs, significantly account for fathers’ parental satisfaction. Mothers’ introjected extrinsic motivation indirectly explains fathers’ marital satisfaction, through mothers’ support of the satisfaction of their three fundamental psychological needs (mediator). Finally, fathers’ participation in child care is accounted for by mothers’ identified extrinsic motivation and endorsement of less traditional beliefs.

Full textThe focus of this doctoral thesis is on Inuit customary adoption in Nunavik. The main objective is to study the association between customary adoption practices and child behavioral problems at school-age. In Nunavik, one-third of Inuit children are adopted according to customary adoption practices. The first article describe the cultural context and the main characteristics of Inuit customary adoption. Taking place at birth, customary adoption is considered as the donation of a child to a close kin, usually the parent’s sibling or the child’s grandparent. Contrary to closed adoptions which is in standard legal use in southern Canada and in the USA, customary adoption is not confidential and biological ties are not severed. The actual information on the development of Inuit adopted children come from a limited body of studies on Inuit children followed by youth protection services. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Nunavik, this thesis included a sample of 46 adopted and 231 non-adopted children followed from birth to school age. Prenatal and familial informations were collected and behavioral problems were assessed using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. The second article compare adopted and non-adopted children on prenatal and familial characteristics and examine the actual extent of the increase in the number of behavior problems seen in Inuit children adopted in accordance with Inuit customs. Adoption per se is not associated with higher rate of behavioral problems at school age but adopted and non-adopted Inuit children were raised in significantly distinct family environments at school-age. Given such differences, the last article identified the prenatal and familial risk factors associated with attention problems and externalizing behaviors in a subsample of Inuit adopted children (n=46). Attention and externalizing behaviors were better explained by familial variables at school age than by prenatal variables. These results contrast significantly with previous domestic and international adoption studies conducted with non-indigenous children. Similarities and differences are discuss in this thesis and hypotheses to explain discrepancies are drawn. This study contribute to extend the scope of knowledge on Inuit customary adoption.

Full textThis research studies youth from Haitian background who are somewhat attached to the church of their parents. It seeks to examine the extent of this attachment, firstly, according to pertinent scientific approaches, particularly sociological and psychological and secondly, through the youths’ own perception. From the perspective of pastoral care of migrants, the research also looks at the role of the congregation and the family in this attachment. Theological reflection examines the moral and pastoral support of the apostle Paul towards his young disciple Timothy, who was being criticized by elders in his church community. The situation of Timothy and of the youth in our study will be shown to be correlated. In both, youth is seen to imply immaturity. Likewise, the generation of biblical Ezra is analyzed; there the conservation of religious purity in the nation of Israel is compared to certain immigrant Haitian leaders and youth. This research shows that Haitian youth are attached to their parents’ congregation primarily for sociocultural reasons but also because of their personal faith in God. The mentality of the older generation is found to be crucial and can make this attachment more fragile.

Full textMy doctoral thesis focuses on the information habitus transformation in the age of the Internet. Bourdieu defines the concept of habitus as a “[…] system of durable, transposable disposition which functions as the generative basis of structured, objectively unified practices” (Bourdieu quoted in Harker, 2000: 167). Using the concept of habitus, I explored how the Internet has modified how mothers access to, and make sense of, the wealth of information available, using the vaccine-hesitancy phenomenon as a case study. In Quebec, vaccination is not mandatory, and it is estimated that nearly one third of parents are vaccine hesitant. Vaccine-hesitant parents may choose to refuse vaccines for their children, to delay vaccination, or to follow the recommendations of health authorities despite significant fears and concerns. Some authors attributed vaccine hesitancy to the proliferation of negative information about vaccines on the Internet. Other studies indicated that vaccine-hesitant parents adhere to a specific parental approach, such as intensive mothering. In North America, many normative views co-exist, most of them put children’s needs as the priority. Mother’s involvement and dedication are perceived as essential to ensure their children’s development. These ideals place considerable pressure on new mothers who are forced to take numerous decisions regarding their children’s health and welfare. In this normative context, where searching and appraising information is highly valued, the Internet appears to be an unavoidable source of information for mothers. This thesis is based on the findings of an online ethnography conducted in 2015. Nonparticipant and participant observations on three online social media groups for mothers, 19 individual interviews with mothers, and media monitoring on the topic of vaccines were conducted. The results highlight the informational context of mothers and the tensions between health authority norms (such as the vaccine norm) and healthism ideology norms (such as questioning expert knowledge). This context, conveying contradictory norms, shapes the new information habitus. Furthermore, this normative context highlights the importance attributed to choice; choice has become the cornerstone of the information habitus. Choice is now the driving force of information-research practices, appropriation of information, as well as informational reflexivity which led to the construction to an individual lay knowledge that mothers can adapt to their needs and values. For example, vaccine-hesitant mothers can choose among recommended vaccinations or adapt the vaccine schedule to their own personal situation, without taking into consideration the public health recommendations and guidelines. For some mothers, the transformation of the informational habitus, with choice as the driving force, is essentially due to the desire to assert their maternal identity. Key-words: Informational habitus, lay knowledge, virtual community, intensive mothering, healthism, online ethnography.
