Abstract:
The Prelude briefly situates the creation of Carmen within a long tradition of Spanish entertainment in Paris, from its incarnation as a novella by Prosper Mérimée (in the 1840s) to the opera by Georges Bizet and his librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy (1875). The fashions of the Second Empire; the influence of the Spanish-born Empress Eugénie, who fostered a taste for Spanish music and dance; and the growing community of Spanish performers and artists in Paris formed a cultural landscape that informed the local color of the opera. This Hispanic milieu in the French capital also conditioned and shaped Bizet’s musical depiction of Spain in Carmen.

Abstract:
Cousin Bette (1846) is considered to be Balzac's last great novel, and a key work in his Human Comedy. Set in the Paris of the 1830s and 1840s, it is a complex tale of the devastating effect of violent jealousy and sexual passion. Against a meticulously detailed backdrop of a post-Napoleonic France struggling with massive industrial and economic change, Balzac's characters span many classes of society, from impoverished workers and wealthy courtesans to successful businessmen and official dignitaries. The tragic outcome of the novel is relieved by occasional flashes of ironic comedy and the emergence of a younger generation which has come to terms with the new political and econimic climate.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview on the spread of theater activities in the wake of massive emigration from Guangdong to Southeast Asia and North America from the mid-nineteenth century to the eve of the Pacific War. Extant records indicate a historical outline with three succeeding phases: (1) the opening period from the 1850s to the 1880s, when Cantonese opera activities were noticed in various locations on the heels of the first major wave of migration from the Pearl River Delta region to different parts of the Pacific Basin; (2) the intermediate period from the 1890s to the 1910s, with ups and downs registered in different places according to specific conditions; and (3) the interwar years of the 1920s and the early 1930s, when Cantonese opera, as a transnational theater, achieved unprecedented vibrancy.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book's main themes. This book adopts a sensory approach to understanding the city as a sonic space that orchestrates different, often conflicting sound culture. It shows how city noise heightens the significance of selective listening in the modern urban condition and argues for an aural rather than visual conception of modernity. In nineteenth-century Paris, urban renewal did not mark the beginning of a period of diminution of sound, but rather it was a time of increasing awareness of, and emphasis on, noise. By reconsidering the myth of Paris as the city of spectacle, where the flâneur's scopophilia reigns supreme, this book attends to what has been silenced by the visual paradigm that still prevails in nineteenth-century French cultural studies. It explores perceptions of street noise in nineteenth-century Paris by selecting specific sounds from the 1830s to the 1890s—peddling sounds—that were distinctive.

Wright, Julian. Benoît Malon and André Léo. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199533589.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on ideas of human relationships in the present through a biographical study of Benoît Malon, an self-taught socialist intellectual who had wide influence in reformism and idealism in the late nineteenth century. It emphasizes the contingent and emotional context of his work, particularly his role in the Paris Commune and his relationship with the writer André Léo, whose own socialist engagement is explored in depth. By examining the networks and activity of Malon from the 1860s to the 1890s, especially his arguments against the ‘orthodox Marxists’ in France, as well as his leadership of the Revue socialiste, we understand how the experience of time in an individual life, which Malon reflected on in his writing, could shape the idea of socialism as the time of a harmonious, united social transformation.
