Abstract This annotated English translation of an article written by Eugène Briffault one year after the 1830 July Revolution presents a unique testimony of a city in a state of post-revolutionary transition. Drawn with the pen of a realist novelist and observed with the eye of a practised reporter, ‘The Paris Night’ takes the reader on a journey through the streets of a city seemingly under martial law, from the haunts of journalists, into the vice-dens of the Palais-Royal, past the hectic activity of Les Halles and into streets still bearing the scars of the recent Revolution. The inscription in Old French on a marble plaque from Tripoli of which Bohemond VI was the commissioner, remains enigmatic until the present day. The damaged state of the inscription, especially where the date of the text is given and the use of the term 'communauté de Tripoli', are the main obstacles for a definite interpretation of this inscription. The marble slab, discovered in 1928 in Tripoli, in or near the port, is now in the National Museum of Beirut. A mould of the inscription arrived in Paris as a gift from the National Museum in Beirut in 1936 and is part of the collection of the Ci

Designed by the palace architect Jacques Lemercier and completed in 1641, this theatre was among the first purpose-built proscenium theatres in France. The French celebration of the centenary of Victor Hugo's death in 1985 included new editions of his works, biographies, an exhibit at the Grand Palais in Paris, all that you would expect in honor of his life and art. But Hugo's death and funeral also drew the attention of some scholars, and forgood reason. Beginning on 18 May 1885, when what proved to be his final illness was announced, the newspapers were filled with reports and rumors about Hugo's condition. Following his death on 22 May journalists concentrated on what has been called the funeral of the century. Two million peoplecame to se

Early modern people lived at the mercy of their surroundings. In an uncertain world, floods, storms, fires, and earthquakes could affect all levels of society across Europe. But destruction can also lead to creation. Accounts of such disasters were printed as pamphlets and then translated, suggesting a shared experience of disaster that could cross confessional divides. However, a closer look shows that more complex ideas about nation and experience were a feature of these understudied publications.
