Abstract:
Parishes are the missing middle in studies of American Catholicism. Between individual Catholics and a global institution, the thousands of local parishes are where Catholicism gets remade. American Parishes showcases what social forces shape parishes, what parishes do, how they do it, and what this says about the future of Catholicism in the United States. Expounding an embedded field approach, this book displays the forces currently reshaping American parishes. It draws from sociology of religion, culture, organizations, and race to illuminate basic parish processes—like leadership and educa

Abstract:
This book uses the Catholic parish to view Mexican immigration and ethnicity in the United States with a focus on Chicago. For Mexican immigrants, the parish had an Americanizing influence on its members. At the same time, many Mexican Americans gained a sense of mexicanidad by participating in the parish’s religious and social events. This process of building a Mexican identity and community in Chicago began in the 1920s. The first parishes served as refuges and as centers of community and identity. Mexicans fiercely attached themselves to specific parishes in Chicago, much like European Amer

From its inception the Oxford Movement was intended to be as much practical as theoretical. In this chapter the author explores the nature and extent of Tractarianism beyond Oxford. The chapter provides a statistical analysis of its progress which is followed by examinations of its liturgical life, including the promotion of the daily service, the creation of eucharistic communities at the heart of its parishes, and the consequent restoration and reordering of church buildings and their furnishings. The chapter discusses the introduction of the practice of confession and the expansion of paroc

Abstract:
Ethnic personal parishes are the most common variety of contemporary personal parishes in the United States. They enable Catholics (usually, Catholics of color) to unify along the lines of shared ethnicity and experience, generating a meaningful parish family. This chapter introduces the idea of the territorial parish as a generalist organization, designed to meet the diverse needs of all in its midst, and that of the personal parish as a named, specialist organization. Personal parishes intentionally serve a more narrow purpose. They embed an institutional desire to preserve and retain partic
