Full textChalk is the characteristic deposit of Late Cretaceous Northern Europe. This specific sediment still relatively poorly understood. The aim of this study is to better constrain the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Paris Basin Chalk. We propose a facies model of the chalk. . We combine this facies model with well log data to perform high resolution correlations. In doing so, we constrain the 3D geometry and paleogeography of the Paris Basin during Late Cretaceous and identify the majors controls (tectonics and eustasy) on chalk deposition. We demonstrate the onset of a broad N-S compression during Late Turonian, attributed to the onset of the alpine cycle. Finally, we highlight a strong oceanic circulation, associated with an upwelling dynamic in northern Europe. Through the comparison of Chalk world repartition with published upwelling numerical predictions, we propose that the occurence of this specific sediment is directly linked to Cretaceous paleooceanography

Full textThe paleontological review of most species of amonnite from the Upper Aptian (Gargasian) in South-Eastern France has been achieved. Accurately positioned in many sections ranged in the whole Vocontian Basin, and particularly in the stratotype region of Gargas, they allowed us to establish a biostratigraphic scale much more precise than the one actually available. New subzones and horizons have been defined in the Furcata and Martini Zones. The Furcata Zone is attributed to the Gargasian, according to the Kilian original sense. The review of the genera Dufrenoyia and Epicheloniceras, each one characterizing these two zones, allowed us to recognize several successive species which were used to elaborate the new biostratigraphic scale of Gargasian in the Tethyan realm. The 3 subzones from the Martini Zone defined by Casey in the Boreal realm were recognized in the South-Eastern France, allowing precise correlations between the 2 realms

Full textChalk is defined as a microporous reservoir rock. This formation is a prolific hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir in the North Sea and is one of the main aquifers in the Paris Basin. The heterogeneity of chalk in terms of petrophysical properties (both surface and subsurface) is illustrated by porosity ranging from 4 to 52 %, permeability from 0.01 to 100 mD, and P-wave velocity on water-saturated samples from 2.4 to 4.4 km.s-1 (Alam et al., 2011).In the study area (Normandie, France), taken as an outcrop analogue, 114 samples were collected (Cenomanian – Santonian). As in the North Sea fields, these samples show great petrophysical heterogeneity: total porosity () from 6.1 to 46.5 %, very low permeability (K; 0.002 mD) to atypical high permeability (477 mD; without fractures), and P-wave velocity on water-saturated samples ranging from 1.8 to 5.5 km.s-1. However, the origin(s) of this large variation in petrophysical parameters is poorly understood. Three sedimentary models are defined here for the chalk:(1) Ramp models, subdivided into argillaceous ramp model, with porosity from 34,4 to 46.5%, and permeability from 0.02 to 3 mD, and carbonate ramp model (mudstone to packstone), with porosity from 26.1 to 46.5%, and permeability from 0.04 to 6 mD,(2) Contourite model (mudstone to grainstone and micro-packstone), with porosity from 8.3 to 45.5%, and permeability from 0.05 to 477 mD,(3) Softground to Hardground model, with porosity from 6 to 36.9%, and permeability from 0.002 to 36 mD.Each model has specific distribution in the porosity-permeability plot.A microtexture classification of the chalk is proposed, based on SEM observation of four groups of criteria (mineralogical content, biogenic fraction, micritic fraction and cement fraction). From these criteria, two major groups are defined: Pure chalk microtexture and Impure chalk microtexture. The Pure chalk microtexture group reflects the intensity of chalk modification during diagenesis (rate of diagenesis, whether early stage or not). An increase in the diagenetic rate induces a decrease in porosity and an increase in P-wave velocity. Diagenetic transformation induces a decrease in pore-space size, with better grain contact, explaining the decrease in porosity and the improved propagation of acoustic P-wave velocity. For Impure chalk microtexture group, the presence of insoluble particles in the matrix does not affect porosity but decreases permeability, due to the reduction of pore-throat size. The complex relationships between depositional inheritance and diagenetic transformation lead to variability in chalk petrophysical parameters. Spatio-temporal distribution of depositional facies and associated diagenetic transformation is not random; it depends on sedimentological condition (e.g. climate and distance to shore) and imprint of diagenetic processes (early or late stage). By extrapolating from the combined data on facies and diagenesis, the petrophysical properties of the entire cliff section can be characterised, and used to describe the reservoir architecture of the Chalk
Bronnert, Constance. "Origine et premières dichotomies des Périssodactyles (Mammalia, Laurasiatheria) : apport des faunes de l'Éocène inférieur du bassin de Paris A primitive perissodactyl (Mammalia) from the early Eocene of Le Quesnoy (MP7, France) First European ‘Isectolophidae’ (Mammalia, Perissodactyla): Chowliia europea, sp. nov., from the lower Eocene of Le Quesnoy, France." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUS563.
Full textPerissodactyls (nowadays including horses, rhinos and tapirs) appear at the beginning of the Eocene, and quickly spread into the whole Northern Hemisphere. The center of origin is still debated but the Asian hypothesis is favored, and their phylogenetic affinities are also matter of debate, mostly since the discovery of cambaytheres in India and the genetic affinities with the South American Native Ungulates. This work provides a review of hippomorph perissodactyles of the early Eocene (MP7- MP10) of Europe, and presents a new phylogeny to answer the question of their origin. Most of the material is unpublished and comes from the Paris Basin, as well as Southern France. Twelve hippomorph species, including two new species, and a new species of isectolophid have been identified for the early Eocene of Europe. Faunas close to the MP7 reference-level show differences between Northern and Southern Europe, confirming the hypothesis of a climatic barrier. A turnover of perissodactyls at the generic level takes place between the sites close to MP7 and those close to MP8- 9, and a homogenization of species between Northern and Southern Europe occurs. The sites close to MP8-9 and MP10 have similar perissodactyl faunas. The phylogenetic study indicates that European hippomorphs are paraphyletic, and that North American equids are rooted in this group, as well as European paleotheres. Several dispersal events occurred from Asia very early in the Eocene. Two episodes of dispersions towards Europe took place for the tapiromorphs, a first (MP7) bringing the isectolophids which will go extinct quickly in Europe, and a second one (MP8-9) bringing more derived tapiromorphs

Full textGuinot, Guillaume. "Selachians from the Late Cretaceous of the Anglo-Paris Basin : systematics, diversity, palaeoecology." Thesis, Montpellier 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011MON20022.
Full textAlthough studied for nearly two centuries, Late Cretaceous selachians (sharks, rays and skates) from the Anglo-Paris Basin are still imperfectly known. The study of 22 selachians (sharks, rays and skates) faunas from Cenomanian to Campanian horizons in Great Britain and northern France allowed a significant advance in our knowledge on these assemblages and their communities. The (mainly phosphatic) chalks sampled yielded about 38 000 selachian fossil remains, mostly teeth. 150 taxa, comprising 130 shark and 20 batoid species, were identified and described. In addition to the large number of new stratigraphic and geographic ranges recognised here, 25 new species and 7 new genera are described beside a number of new taxa that are left in open nomenclature. The large number of taxa included in this work, along with other published data from NW Europe and Western Interior Seaway, allowed diversity patterns of Late Cretaceous selachians to be studie d through the use of various rarefaction and re-sampling methods. The various bioevents identified could all be correlated to global environmental changes such as temperature and sea level variations as well as changes in water mass distribution. Several palaeoecological aspects of these assemblages are also discussed. The use of morpho-functional dental types provided a promising approach area in assessing changes in the morpho-functional structure of some modern selachian assemblages depending on environmental conditions. Ordination methods (clusters, CA) used on both the taxonomic and morpho-functional structure of the faunas considered here, allowed the identification of groupings among the different assemblages. Accordingly, various environmental factors are proposed to explain the observed distribution and the palaeoenvironmental affinities of some taxa are discussed. Diversity measurements proved to be rich in information and allowed the identification of habitat hete rogeneity as the main controlling factor on the diversity and evenness of the Santonian-Campanian faunas. The beta diversity of the numerous Early Campanian faunas is also discussed and indicates low provinciality in the basin. Finally, comparisons with other assemblages from other NW basins allowed general palaeoecological distributions to be identified
