Full textThe study wich deals with french communist party, is developped on two different levels, national and international, unionistic and political. Short and middle times are mixed up. The twenties light up the situation of the FCP during the thirties. In 1934 the communist movement meets again reflexions and activities already set up in 1926 but vanished afterwards. The main point of the thesis consists in studying communist strategy and activity both among french society and Comintern. Communist organization as well as ideological productions concerning political and economical analysis and theory are considered

Full textA survey of the french politics shows the whole political parties exclude. If the french communist party (P. C. F. ) is not an exception to the rule, its image is surely much associated with the exclusion. So, we can wonder whether there is not a particularity about the exclusions from the P. C. F. That could result from the particularity of this party. The exclusions may indeed conduce to reveal the working of the P. C. F. ; the analysis of their evolution and of their different forms conduces, besides to delect the evolution of this party; this survey induces to inquire what the evolution of exclusions and of their practices reveals about the evolution of the working and of the identity of the P. C. F. The policy of the P. C. F. In matter of exclusions is a continuous demand when this party is created in december 1920; it has many functions. This policy is characterized by evolutionary, but also unchanging proceedings. It has, besides, an impact on excluded people : a psychosociological analysis reveals that the intellectuals are particularly concerned by the exclusions and that the exclusions have some effects on excluded people and on their political future. Finally, the analysis of exclusions shows the P. C. F. Exerts an influence on its members; and the evolution of the exclusions reveals the evolution of the communist identity through the position of the P. C. F. In the political space and its attractive power. The analysis of exclusions reveals the real character of the P. C. F

Full textThe national question is meant to be understood as the relationship to the country as well as a link with a political an historical setting, together with theaspects of conscience awareness of the french civilian society : this does not exclude the problem of the creation and existence of nations. The historic period chosen is the one during which the ideas of thorez are fully unfolded : these ideas are thus presented so as tobe understood as the french way of the marxist leninism doctrine belonging to the komintern which was organized by the pcf. During this period, the same pcf shows how it is at the core and does represent the core of politics at the same time. Hence it cannot split and it aims at preserving the "party". The pcf is almost unable to follow an independant political line and is obliged to cling to other forces to make it stronger; these other forces have to acknowledge the worker's representation monopoly. The pcf is the answer to the political questionning of the first world war result, of the sfio and of the political system of the french third republic grounded upon the crushing of the commune and upon the national disinterest

Full textIn june 1972, the p. C. F. , the p. S. And the m. R. G. Realized their union around a common programme. Nevertheless, the great divergences have led to the rupture between the two parties on september 1977. It's advisable to remind the three waves of nationalizations: 1936's, 1945's and 1982's. Concerning the negociation about the nationalization, the two parties were favorable to the nationalization, but they have stumbled over his scale. The p. C. F. Wanted the ample nationalization and the p. S. Remained hostile to the extension of the field of nationalization. Indeed, in face of the electoral superiority of the p. S. , the p. C. F. Has tried to improve his position in the sharing of power extending wildly the field of nationalization. The problem of nationalization has played a decisive role in the rupture. The other polemics such as the direction of nationalized enterprises and the idemnification of shareholders have joined in the chain of causality

Full textThe civil war and the first years which followed the communist failure to get access to power constitute, for Greece, an historical period determined -not by the series of events - but mainly by the preservation and the institutionalization of the ideological schism created during the civil war. Taking the communist political and military defeat in august 1949, as a starting point, we preferred to examine the segment of three years in order to analyze the parameter "vanquished". Our choice was thus limited because of the important role of the years 1949-51 played in the evolution of Greek communist party and of its policy. We throw a retrospective light on the communist progress towards civil war and simultaneously on the presentation of the defeat. We tried to analyze the new strategy for communist legitimacy undertaken after the defeat. We insisted on the different militant pratiques, introduced in the party's organization in Greece. Furthermore, we analyze the party's section which retires from the greek socio-political scene after its defeat and processes to the creation of a caricature of "greek popular democraty" erected from elements copied from the structures of parties in power in eastern Europe. This division corresponds, thus, to a geographical distance amougnt the fragments of party's basis which evolue differently while underlinning, step by step, a mental distance and a differentiated attitude towards the socio-political reality

Full textIn 1920, The Librairie de L'Humanité, established in 1905, plan to educate first French communists as professionnal revolutionaries. Then, le FCP take over the Library from two publishing houses : the Bureau d'éditions in 1926 and the Eitions sociales internationales in 1927. A that time, Komintern's publishing Service set the same politic litterature to the national sections. The FCP construct a harsch view about reading. From1930, it attacks popular novels. At 1935, FCP'S running take over his own publishing services. The catalogue aim to readership more extensive and is made up of more various editorial genres. The publishing houses aim to distribution by bookshop's network. Even if the FCP expect intellectuals to be go-between, they have not a central function in theses publishing houses. The World War two confirm publishing houses' duties, to train militants and to keep politic cohesion of the FCP. At the Libération, the FCP give priority to his press. With the economic crisis of publishing and the biginning of the Cold War, the FCP‘s publishing houses enter into a difficult period. The FCP reorganize his editorial system, with Editions sociales and Editeurs français réunis, and then Cercle d'art in 1950 and La Farandole in 1955. At the end of the Cold War, the results are bad. The publishing houses suffer from a real isolations in the publishing world. The FCP fight always for a useful function of reading. The reading as entertainment is defending by alone communist intellectuals

Full textThe concept of "memory" has many different meanings. One can define memory as "the present of the past", distinct from history, as the reality of today more than yesterday's actual events. Historical memory defined by what is written and kept alive by commemorations, individual live memory, common memory and collective memory : all these notions point to diverse realities. The aim of this thesis is to link together the collective history and the individuals' biographies, the public history of the French communist party and the private memories. In order to do so, i selected three "figures of memory". These three figures are : the French Revolution, Stalin's crimes and the image of de Gaulle. Interviews collected among party members prove that belonging to the Communist Party influences individual memories. But it works both ways : there is an interaction between the official history of the French Communist Party and the memories of the party members. The mechanisms of interaction are different in each "figure of memory"

Full textThis thesis intends to identify the references and the interpretation that the authors form the French and Communist parties have given to the historical character Vladimir Ilych Ulyanov (Lenin) between 1920 (the year of creation of the FCP) and 1989 (the year of dissolution of the RCP). The goal of this research was to observe the general manner in which these references determine the essence or the evolution of the two parties and the political frame created by the interpretations. Two distinct dimensions of the research were considered: the theoretical analysis of written document, which determines the impact made by the personality and the thinking of Lenin to the political program of the two parties; the analysis of the evolution of the two parties, of their political structures and the social systems they determine to finally see how the discourse is put into practice. The thesis is divided into five great chapters. The first one, Theory and practice: Leninism of the two parties, which has also a role of introduction, analyses the evolution of the two parties and their attachment to Leninism as a guide in their action. The second chapter, Soviet model and its application shows the manner in which the two parties have copied the construction applied in the Soviet Union. The third and the fourth chapter deal with the Political representations in Romania and France. There are two types of discourse that mention Lenin: the institutional discourse (present in the Party Congress or the plenary sessions of the Central Committee) and the ideological discourse (propagated through the speeches of the party leaders, the propaganda publications, the party press or the theoretical articles). The fifth chapter discusses Specific interpretations, published rather as individuals, in a scientific manner

Full textThis thesis retraces the history of the workers’ conflicts at Billancourt starting in the 1950ies in their connection with the communists’ policies, dominant at the time, and carried out by the skilled workers. It highlights and analyses the hidden factors of the transformations that affect the different conflicts and the worker identities that manifest themselves in these conflicts. The domination of the communist model of the 50ies, destabilized by the dynamics of the conflicts of the years around 1968, was the work of the skilled workers. This dynamism was stimulated by the transformation of work engaged upon in the previous decades. Their insubordination, their protests about work and racism, the strength of the blockade strikes, thwart the French communist party policy oriented towards the union from the unskilled workers to the engineer. The initiative of the rupture, in 1977, of the left, attested to the failure of the PCF’s ambition to remain the leading party. In 1981, the PCF counted in vain on a successful, but unwished for, participation in the government. This participation disappointed the workers, activating contradictions within its militant corps. The factory world dislocated. Working class centrality and class concept had lost all operational reality, while the communist policy of categorical particularization was powerless to stem a political "balkanisation" of wage earners. Violent disagreements broke out in the sections, and were seen in the factory by divergent practices. The radical campaign for the "ten of Billancourt", proposals for alternative management, failed. The ties between the party and the workers were weakened, leaving the immigrants alone and helpless in the face of job suppressions

Full textFrom the origin of the French communist party (PCF) in the 1920s, to the 1950s, PCF relationship to the law system has evolved, from a straightforward opposition to "class justice" into a new political culture mixing democratic values with the sovietic model. This ambigous political culture with the law system has been long standing, even at times when sectarism was at its strongest. In their day to day practice, communist lawyers made the link between revolutionnary activism and the integration within a democratic society. The PCF took advantage of this double identity to extend its influence. However, the gap between the sovietic reality and the democratics ideals, prevented the PCF from being recognized as the inheritor of the french democratic tradition. In the aftermath of the XXth session of the communist party of the soviet union, and of the military intervention in Hungary, the communist views on law and justice begun to slowly evolve

Full textWe see the political ideology of the greek communist party as a coherent whole of social performances which actively contribute to the construction of the greek social and political fields. The change of the political regime in greece in 1974 starts off a process of ideological domination of greek society by the communists. At the same time, in the field of ideology, communism becomes the established political oppoistion. As a result of its resonance throughout the social field, communist ideology takes an active part in the construction of a communist counter-society. On the political level, this cultural community of communists does not help reinforce the position of the g. C. P. Faced with the present cultural imperatives which determine all social rapports in greece

Full textUntil the beginning of the 90s, the French Communist Party had its own education system to train militants and officials, through a specific network of schools. This dissertation first gives an account of how these schools were operated from the 70s until 1995 - when they were done away. The analysis of date drawn from the archives of the " central schools " and of the " central section for education " enables to give a sharp insight into the contents of the communist curricula, its elaboration and evolution. Interviews with officials in charge of education, with tutors as well as with militants who attented the schools help to understand why and how education was the object of various uses, expectations and identity investments. The schools appear as devices of partisan socialization, that explicitly aim at the assimilation of the official political line of the party and of the communist ideology. They are consequently a particularly relavant locus for the study of the ideologization of engagement and the mechanisms through which the identity of communist militants is constructed. In the second part, the author investigates the various reasons explaining how the schools network was dismantled and finally replaced by a more diverse system of training courses, that relies on different principles. An ethnographic inquiry of these courses puts light on the mechanisms through wich the communist identity and ideology come recomposed. On the wole, this thesis stands as a contribution to the analysis of the transformations of the communist institution, seen from the point of view of the militant training system

Full textMy main hypothesis is that the analysis of diversity of communist electoral decline process, in territory in which french communist party is very strength, would be able to allow to know the structure of communist domination. In this purpose, i was interested in pcf decline on 1978-1995 period in one of his old department of strength : the north's department. More precisely, in this last department, i have isolated the communes caracterised by a particular communist electoral domination, before the beginning of the decline (1978). From a theoretical reflection about the notion of "political territory", the elaboration of an empirical definition of territories whose foundation is based on pcf localized electoral domination (communist territories of domination), and the construction of a typology of communist electoral resistance of these territories, i have found the structures of communist decline. It results from this research that resistance of pcf's decline is, in an important measure, based on the oldness of a particuliarly dense communist implantation, in an area stamped by old industry (steel industry-metallurgy and mine). The very anthropological dimension of pcf implantation, which is very dependant on a worker world in disappearence, is a strength but also a weakness. It's a strength, because pcf leans on the oldness of its implantations, their geographical interlinks and the presence of many politic elects to limit and to slow down to a maximum the decline process. It's a weakness, because this anthropological anchor represents such a confinement at different levels of local syndical and political communism (communist elects, voters and members of the party), that the fate of communist territories of domination seems linked to the fate of the old industry

Full textHistorically, the soviet economic system has a doctrinal function : the construction of the socialist society. This political parameter has justified the economic monopoly of the communist party. In the planned economy, the process of the industrial decision is controled by the political system. So, the centralized planning is dominated by the ideological line of the party. The influence of the political constraints in the soviet economy has an important consequence : the emergence of a political rationality. The efficiency of the economic system is dependent on the strength of the political power - and on the cybernetic function of the local party organs. So, the decline of the legitimacy of the communist party in the system has aggravated the malfunction of the economic sphere. In conclusion, the crisis of the socialist economy is first a crisis of her ideology

Full textIn the years 1936-1975, the french communist party incessantly proclaimed its opposition to the regime set up in spain by general franco. There were many different expressions of this attitude which - both before and after world war ii - ranged from the enrolment of militants and party officials in the international brigades to the organization of meetings and rallies. The fight against francoism generated discussions, decisions and tactical choices among party leaders. It also led to the creation of committees of support and solidarity and the publication of a long series of texts, brochures, leaflets and works of art. Finally, the communist party's opposition to francoism attracted many supporters who sometimes became fellow-travellers or new militants. For almost 30 years, the mental universe of the party was made up of images, beliefs, convictions, memories which expressed anti-francoism and closely united communists as a whole. This played a unifying role in the party and was used as a way to voice its patriotism and open nationalism. If we analyze this political culture, we can identify certain modes of operation and the political choices of the party. Yet, as of 1963, when the trial of julian grimau was organized in spain, a change in attitude could be noted. From then on, the representation which the communist party had constructed of its fight against francoism seemed to fade, to be erased. Although french communists continued to participate in the same activities, which had become ritual, they gradually lost their points of reference. The communist party then ceased to be a homogeneous society, it had lost the culture which since 1936 had built up its cohesion, its strength and its stability

Full textThe members of the ''second generation'' of the ruling elite of the Italian Communist Party (ICP) come together under fascism. During the 1930s they are young intellectuals who belong to ''left-wing fascism''. From the middle of this decade they start to move away from fascism. They will later join the ICP.Between 1944 and 2006 twenty of them publish ''personal texts'' (personal and autobiographical works), in which they explain their political itinerary. In them they claim to be coherent: the main reasons for which they followed fascism are the reasons for their commitment to the ICP.They also write that their support for the Mussolini regime was the result of the fact that they were deceived under fascism which gave them a false impression of itself. The young intellectuals did not adhere to the ''real'' fascism, but a false representation of it. Consequently they had always been antifascists while believing themselves to be fascists. The content of these publications is influenced by the leader of the ICP, Palmiro Togliatti, who uses the ''personal texts'' dating from the 1940s to attract young ex-fascists whom his party needs to form a new ruling class and to win the battle for the conquest of power. These ''personal texts" in turn influence several historians and Italian opinion which, for a long time, accepted their theses without calling them into question, and based their way of representing and describing the political and cultural commitment shown by young intellectuals under fascism on them

These changes in analysis resulted mainly from the use of theoretical concepts which were outside orthodox marxism, and can be situated in the struggles between different currents in the party over its new programme. In the following years, the divisions at all levels of the C. P. , as well as its organisational methods and structures, prevented it from creating and applying a strategy which correspond to its new priority. Despite the limited impact of communist activity on the Thatcher governments, the C. P. Had a large indirect influence on the labour movement through its analyses of the political and economic situation. The turning point of 1985 also contributed to its transformation into democratic left

This piece of work tries to put it in light and to understand how it works (who works at the central propaganda department ? what kind of job are they doing ?) it starts from 1977 till 1989 ; from the rebirth to a period of time when the communist ideology is very weak

Full textMany autobiographies of former communist activists have been published in France but the withdrawal of the French Communist Party's grassroots members has rarely been studied from a sociological point of view. This dissertation deals with this withdrawal process between 1978 and 2000. From a corpus of thirty biographical interviews conducted in two very different regions (the Pas-de-Calais mineral basin, representative of the crisis of the "workers'Party" and Paris, which used to be the showcase of the "intellectuals'Party"), it reconstructs the trajectories of former activists. By studying the evolution of the relationship between individuals and the party, from the joining process to the post-activism redeployments, it allows to understand the motivations for the defection. Identifying the narrative categories used in the biographical interviews makes it possible to understand the conditions of the joining, the inflexions of the activist carreer, the motives for exit, and the ways to biographically negotiate with the defection. The analysis of these processes is a way to break with the explanations of the defection that only focus on political events. It demonstrates the role of social roots, institutionnal changes and identity transformations in the exit phenomenon. It also shows the differentiated ability of people to adapt themselves to new situations and to give coherent image of the changes in their carreer. Eventually, the analysis of the communist exit raises the question of the changes in institutionnal configurations and individual identifications in a social context that values continuity
