Blueberry fruit were sealed in 0.00254 cm (1 mil) thick, 200 cm2 low density polyethylene pouches, which, in turn, were sealed in containers continually purged with gas mixtures containing 0, 20, 40 or 60 kPa CO2 and held at 15C. Sampling the gas composition of the enclosed package permitted accurate determination of O2 uptake, CO2 production and the respiratory quotient (RQ) despite the high background CO2 levels. O2 uptake was minimally affected by the CO2 treatments. CO2 production, however, increased at CO2 partial pressures over 20 kPa, resulting in an elevated RQ at 40 and 60 kPa CO2. Ra

The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction of ultralow oxygen concentrations (ULO) with storage temperatures and carbon dioxide partial pressures and its influence on fruit quality preservation and on the occurrence of physiological disorders in 'Royal Gala' apples. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with four replicates 25-fruit. ULO conditions (1.0 kPa O2 + 2.0 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2; 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; and 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2) were tested at 0, 0.5 and 1.0°C, in a 5x3 factorial arrangement. Exchange of water vapour and CO2 was measured on a small group of trees in a 12-year-old regenerating forest dominated by Eucalyptus spp. in Kioloa State Forest, south-eastern New South Wales. The trees were growing in a weighing lysimeter (10.3 m2 ground area) with the dominant tree about 10 m high. A 12 m high enclosure made of polyethylene film was erected to enclose the trees on the lysimeter. Air was impelled in from the bottom of the enclosure by four fans at a total flow rate of 4.6 m3 s-1. Air samples for infrared gas analysers were taken 1, 4, 7 and 10 m above the ground. Pure CO2 (up

Negative and positive partial discharge inception voltages and breakdown measurements are reported in a needle-plane electrode system as a function of pressure under AC voltage for natural gases (N2, CO2, and O2/CO2), pure NovecTM gases (C4F7N and C5F10O) and NovecTM in different natural gas admixtures. For compressed 4% C4F7N–96% CO2 and 6% C5F10O–12% O2–82% CO2 gas mixtures, the positive-streamer mode is identified as the breakdown mechanism. Breakdown and negative partial discharge inception voltages of 6% C5F10O–12% O2–82% CO2 are higher than those of 4% C4F7N–96% CO2. At 8.8 bar abs, the

There are concerns in the industry about using an electrochemical technique for actual hydrogen permeation measurements where charging current is not a field condition. The objective of this work is to use pressure buildup techniques to study the influence of H2S and CO2 partial pressure on the relationship between hydrogen permeation and corrosion rate measured by different techniques. Sulfide films formed on carbon steel in a solution containing 5 wt% NaCl and 0.5 wt% acidic acid at various H2S and CO2 partial pressures were characterized, and the effect of the film on hydrogen permeation wa

Measurements of CO2 and water vapour exchange by leaves were combined with measurements of carbon isotope composition (13C/12C) of CO2 in the air passing over the leaf. Carbon isotope discrimination during CO2 uptake was determined from the difference in carbon isotope composition of the air leaving the leaf chamber with or without a leaf enclosed. Leaves of wheat plants grown with different nitrogen nutrition and leaves of several other species were examined. The measurements, made at different irradiances for a given leaf, showed that carbon isotope discrimination was strongly correlated wit

The effects of a buffer system in test solution and CO2 partial pressure on sulfide stress cracking (SSC) susceptibility of low-alloy steel were investigated under pH 4.0 at 0.03 MPa H2S partial pressure. A double cantilever beam test was used to quantitatively evaluate SSC susceptibility. The corrosion rates and absorbed diffusible hydrogen concentration were also evaluated. Acetic acid/sodium acetate (acetate buffered solution) and carbonic acid/bicarbonate (bicarbonate buffered solution) buffered solutions were used as buffer systems in this study. The scope of this study includes modeling and experimental investigation of sulfide stress cracking (SSC) of high-strength carbon steel. A model has been developed to predict hydrogen permeation in steel for a given pressure and temperature condition. The model is validated with existing and new laboratory measurements. The experiments were performed using C-110 grade steel specimens. The specimens were aged in 2% (wt.) brine saturated with mixed gas containing CH4, CO2, and H2S. The experimental results showed that the crystalline grain size of corrosion film surface is different for the different CO2 partial pressure. The response of the photosynthetic capacity of mesophyll to a rapid loss of water from the leaf was evaluated by measuring transpiration, net CO2 uptake and temperature in dwarf bean leaves exposed to saturating CO2 partial pressures in a leaf chamber before and after cutting the petiole in air. Some plants were pre-exposed to low or high photon flux density, or to water deficit before measurements. During 3-5 min after cutting, when the turgorpassive opening of the stomata accelerated the water loss from the leaf, the rate of CO2 uptake was depressed; the depression was more pronounced in you
