Abstract:
The polarized roles of leader and participant in the liturgical assembly can be mutually antagonistic, especially when each person is unaware of both roles active in themselves and in the assembly. By growing in “role awareness” participants can discover the leader role in themselves and so more fully engage their own actuosa participatio, and leaders can discover the participant role in themselves and so better inhabit and contextualise their role in the active participation of the whole assembly. Both participants and leaders can discover the rich diversity of roles at work within themselves, in the assembly and in the world. All can discover themselves as persons in communion. [108 words]

Abstract:
The concept of unio mystica stands out of the more distinctive aspects of H.R. Mackintosh's theological work. Generally regarded as one of the leading English-speaking theologians of the first third of this century, Mackintosh and his innovative insights have since fallen into comparative neglect. Interestingly, the concept of the unio mystica seldom appeared as a theme on its own, apart from his programmatic article ‘The Unio Mystica as a Theological Conception’ (1909). Rather it served as a leitmotif which recurred at important points in his christology and soteriology. This essay will survey the meaning and importance Mackintosh gave to the unio mystica, and the various ways the concept functioned in his theology. Hence the first part will reconstruct his understanding of union with Christ, while the second part will examine three main applications of the concept: participatory christology, justification, and the Christian life. We will also explore some of the potential the concept may have for contemporary theology in a few concluding remarks.

Abstract:
To elicit the opinion of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients about the acceptability of a newly designed participation questionnaire - the ‘Impact on Participatio n and A utonomy’ (IPA), 35 MS outpatients who had completed an English version of the IPA questionnaire (IPA-E) were interviewed. Patients were recruited consecutively from outpatients attending the MS clinic. They were invited to answer 15 short questions during a 20-minute interview after signing a consent form and completing the IPA -E questionnaire. C ompletion time of the IPA -E questionnaire was 19.3 ± 4.7 minutes. Most respondents believed that the IPA -E items were easy or very easy to understand (83%), relevant (more than 74%), not embarrassing (more than 97%) and 94% considered that no items should be removed. Three additional topics were suggested: ‘looking after children’, ‘the extent of information on current services’ and information about ‘treatment progress’. A mong the eight domains of the IPA, most respondents considered mobility to be the most important and education the least important. The IPA -E was found to be acceptable and relevant to a sample of MS outpatients, although it could have been enhanced by items on parental or family roles.

Abstract:
After the process of redemocratization in Brazil and the promulgation of the Constitution of 1988, several institutions and instruments of state management and planning implemented in their organizational structure ways of popular participation. In the management of cities, this tendency was very expressive especially after the elaboration of the Estatuto das Cidades (City Statute) and was often accompanied by measures of administrative decentralization. Considering this context, this research aims to discuss the limits and possibilities of popular participation in institutional urban management through the analysis of Municipal Participative Councils (MPC) of São Paulo Regional Prefectures. MPC are instances that propose policies for São Paulo territories, in addition to supporting and supervising the decentralized administration of regional prefectures. To carry out this research was executed two main methodological steps. Firstly, some indicators of geographic conditions in São Paulo territories were analyzed in order to identify probable inequalities of possibilities of participation of the population in the MPC, due to worse or better living conditions in the districts and places of residence. Next, we sought to identify the practical results of the action of MPC in the planning and production measures of the city. The detailing of the operation of MPC were obtained from visits to ordinary meetings in some regional prefectures and through semi-structured reports and interviews with counselors present at these meetings. In general, it was observed that the low administrative and budgetary autonomy of regional municipalities has a negative impact on the possibilities of MPC intervention. Moreover, the regulatory standards of MPC, which restricts their activities to a merely consultative nature, associated with the frequent lack of support from the regional governments offices, demobilize the participants, many of whom are absent from meetings because they feel ignored and unable to participate effective. However, despite the challenges and limitations of the MPC, most active counselors emphasize the importance of the institution, and some attribute certain actions in the territories to the pressure of the councils. The limits of the council\'s performance expose contradictions inherent in a society in which the directions of the production of the geography of cities are restricted to certain privileged political and economic circles. The solution to the social demand for greater political participation ends up being carried out only in the formal plane.

As this is an emerging field, and therefore a challenging one, I have found it pertinent to propose as an investigation object the relationships between the environmental issue and an specific social movement – the Affected by Dams Movement (MAB), based on the hypothesis that environmental issues should receive a prominent place in the pedagogy and methodology of this movement due to its own political nature. However, considering the research and analysis of the documents produced by the MAB, I have decided to verify through a case study – and using the participating observation as a method – how the relationship between the environmental issue and the political participation was configured in the daily routine of the residents affected by dams. To carry out this verification I have chosen the Castanhão Dam, located in the Middle Jaguaribe, Ceará, and the Novo Alagamar rural resettling, which at the time of the research (2004-2005) had already obtained considerable political results through the support and militancy in the MAB. The data presented and discussed in this work, with the support of current theoretical texts, have confirmed that the environmental theme is very integrated in the ideology of the MAB – either in the identification of problems or in the emergent ways of solving them, this movement has already achieved, in dialogues with similar international movements, to produce a critical reflection on the model of energy and water policies in the current historical moment of the capitalist production way, commonly denominated globalization. This research has also verified that the residents of the Novo Alagamar resettling have an understanding of the environment meaning and environmental education, although they do not use those terminologies produced by the Brazilian institutional culture. All the data obtained through the participating observation – considered as the most appropriate method for the registration of implicit conceptions – have revealed that for the residents of the resettling, the atmosphere is conceived as historicized, that is, inseparable from the human being and social universe.

The participation of workers in corporate decisions has been evidenced in the academic literature as a solution for a democratization of labor relations and for the decision-making process to take workers' interests into account. The objective of this study is to reflect on the participative practices comparing the literature with the perception of the egress employees of a brazilian state-owned company. In methodological terms, the research was based on an extensive bibliographical survey in order to support the elaboration of an interview questionnaire for application to 32 employees who left the company without retirement conditions, of a brazilian state-owned company. As main results, it was evidenced that the higher the hierarchical level of the decision, the more limited was the participation of the workers; the participative practices of the company did not provide systemic changes; the limitations in participation influenced the exit and caused deleterious impacts on the egress; evidence of discrimination in the participation of workers was observed, mainly by gender; the impacts of participation observed in the literature converged with the interviewees' impression; the conditions for participation verified in the literature were insufficient in the company; the main effectiveness points of the consultation mechanisms and the better preparation of employees and managers were pointed out as main points of improvement, and one part aimed at joint management of decisions. In addition, 39 unpublished sub-attributes of participatory management in the empirical study were identified, in addition to the 34 observed in the literature.

Abstract:
The main scope of this work is to present the results of a study on the process of interlocution between members of the civil society and the public power in the city of MacapÃ, the capital of the Brazilian State of AmapÃ. This thesis brings to light the analysis of the dynamics of participation of members of society in the political process of elaborating and executing the municipal planning. This was possible through the implementation of an institutional design of shared management proposed by the government team that took office between 2013 and 2016. The present work does not aim to present evaluations of results and effectiveness of the public policies implemented in these four years. In the present study, the following integrated objectives were included: a) To reveal elements that contextualize the ambience in Macapà from the perspective of its development and the configuration of its local political elite; b) To review the characteristics of the institutional dynamics for a participatory management induced by the local executive branch of Macapà related to the elaboration and execution of a multi-annual plan, from 2013 to 2016; and, c) To point out advances, appropriations, conflicts, difficulties and challenges related to the institutional design of participatory management implemented by the government team that took office in MacapÃ, in 2013. During the contextualization of the data, it became evident that the creation of the State of Amapà in 1988 was a dividing line that marked the beginning of the development of deep spatial, social, economic and political transformation processes in the municipality of MacapÃ, including the renewal of local political elites. The results lead to the identification of components that integrate family groups, political parties and local leaders involved in the political sphere of the city. When the declared intentions of opening channels of dialogue with the society, and the participation management in the processes of elaboration and execution of municipal planning were analyzed, it was verified that the greatest efforts of mobilization for shared elaboration of the municipal planning and allocation of resources in programs to manage participation in the multi-annual plan took place in 2013. The government that took office from 2013 to 2016 implemented participatory experiences with different models and names, such as O povo no commando, Congresso do povo e Prefeitura na sua rua. These experiences changed the approach given to the relationship with society in the last half of its four-year term. Although the model of participatory management adopted in the municipality has generated advances and empowerment, it also presented evidence of conflicts, limitations and challenges. Even though the purpose of this study is not to advance in the field of pragmatics, the results allow us to infer that, starting from the management design adopted by the municipality of MacapÃ, from 2013 to 2016, and from the perceptions about its implantation process, there is a need to reduce the centrality of the government in the management of participatory Institutions and the effective broadening of the participatory process beyond the initial stages of preparation of the Multi-annual Plan, the Budget Directive Law and the Annual Budget Law. These steps aim to overcome the difficulties faced during the monitoring of controlling actions, and in the access of different members of the civil society to the various sectors of the city hall.

Salvador

Abstract:
During the previous years, but above all starting in the 90âs, researchers have been calling the attention for an emerging field of studies composed by the confluence of environmentalism and social movements, a quite promising political trend since it integrates universalistic demands instead of particularistic ones, as it is the case of the majority of the most contemporary social movements. As this is an emerging field, and therefore a challenging one, I have found it pertinent to propose as an investigation object the relationships between the environmental issue and an specific social movement â the Affected by Dams Movement (MAB), based on the hypothesis that environmental issues should receive a prominent place in the pedagogy and methodology of this movement due to its own political nature. However, considering the research and analysis of the documents produced by the MAB, I have decided to verify through a case study â and using the participating observation as a method â how the relationship between the environmental issue and the political participation was configured in the daily routine of the residents affected by dams. To carry out this verification I have chosen the CastanhÃo Dam, located in the Middle Jaguaribe, CearÃ, and the Novo Alagamar rural resettling, which at the time of the research (2004-2005) had already obtained considerable political results through the support and militancy in the MAB. The data presented and discussed in this work, with the support of current theoretical texts, have confirmed that the environmental theme is very integrated in the ideology of the MAB â either in the identification of problems or in the emergent ways of solving them, this movement has already achieved, in dialogues with similar international movements, to produce a critical reflection on the model of energy and water policies in the current historical moment of the capitalist production way, commonly denominated globalization. This research has also verified that the residents of the Novo Alagamar resettling have an understanding of the environment meaning and environmental education, although they do not use those terminologies produced by the Brazilian institutional culture. All the data obtained through the participating observation â considered as the most appropriate method for the registration of implicit conceptions â have revealed that for the residents of the resettling, the atmosphere is conceived as historicized, that is, inseparable from the human being and social universe.

The aim of this work is to identify the sense of participative institutions as an area of deliberation, participation and social control due to the frequent diagnosis of their mechanisms of working. Initially we sought to contextualize the period that goes from the 60´s on, to understand the effects of the crise in the fordist system in economy, society and State. After it was addressed the democratic theory, since Greece, to get clear the effects of the power and richness in the relations between State and society. It was the diacletical relation between State and society, in other words, between the necessity of disenfranchisement of the dominant classes (State) for the others to emancipate, which explains lots of these contraditions and ambiguities that last until now, following the perspective of the crise of representativeness. It was used the theory of deliberative democracy of Jürgen Habermas to analyse the multiple studies of the case whose empirical objects were: the Municipal Council of Urban Politics of Niterói (COMPUR) and Forum of Urban Politics of Niterói (FOPUR). In an attempt to understand how the governaments elected after the period of Brazilian redemocratization, in a direct way, had a relation with these instituitions. One of the chapters aims to characterize this period until the 90´s, when a dispute between two political projects, the managerial and societal, happens in Brazil. Through the empirical studies and bibliographical review were possible not only to reply the aims of the work but also to verify how subdued to economy, politics and society are, due to the effects of an international hegemonic ideology. Therefore, we observe through the analysis of the discourse of de interviews and non-participant observation of the meetings, lots of the answers that this worked intended to find, like understand that, in spite of difficulties, these instituitions have an important role for the development of the whole world.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter reflects on the possibilities and challenges of using participatory research methods in the production of critical knowledge about migration – including visual knowledge. It first reflects on dominant regimes of representations and on the consolidation of a visual knowledge-power nexus around migration. Against this background, it discusses whether and under which conditions participatory approaches may enable the production of counter-hegemonic accounts and knowledges, with a particular focus on the way in which participation can challenge the displacement of violence that underpins dominant and exclusionary representations of migration. After thinking through processes of collective knowledge distribution and exploring the possibilities opened up by participatory dissemination practices, the chapter concludes with a call for further theorisation of participation and for the recognition of its relational and contested nature.

Abstract:
Tackling difficulties related to student participation in the college classroom is central on the learning process. In this action-research study, we designed and implemented an action plan to boost participation on the grounds of (1) explaining the objectives and procedures for each activity to students; (2) requesting student participation by name; (3) giving them time to reflect before participating; and (4) requesting that students who are not paying attention participate. A survey was used in order to assess students' perceptions of the action plan. The survey included 10 items (1-4 Likert scale). A total of 103 students completed the survey. The scores’ mean was 3.19, demonstrating a positive student perception of the action plan. The statements with the highest average scores were: “Teacher allows time for reflection after posing a question” and “Teacher addresses specific students by name.” The instructors recorded their perceptions into writing, providing opinions on the development of the action plan. These teachers' comments were summarized into categories. In conclusion, we considered that the action plan helped to improve student participation, and we believe that in order to obtain sufficient participation we have to attain a classroom environment that favors motivation, confidence and respect for students.

Abstract:
This paper studies the participation behaviors in design crowdsourcing by modeling associations between participants and design contests as a bipartite network. Such a network consists of two types of nodes, participant nodes and design contest nodes, and the links indicating participating relations. Our hypothesis is that participants’ decisions are interdependent. For example, one participant’s decision on whether to participate in a contest depends on whether other participants have participated in the same contest or not. To test the hypothesis, the exponential random graph model (ERGM) is adopted. ERGM enables the utilization of various network configurations (e.g., stars and triangles) to characterize different forms of interdependencies and identify the factors that influence link formation process. Using the field data of GrabCAD — an online design crowdsourcing platform, a case study is performed. Four groups of factors are found influential to participants’ behaviors in design crowdsourcing, including designer-related, contest-related, incentive-related and decision interdependence-related factors. Our results indicate the network-based approach can successfully identify the most important factors and quantify the interdependent effects. Our results reveal interesting features about the incentives of GrabCAD, e.g., the absolute amount of the first prize does not play a significant role in attracting participants whereas the fraction does, but negatively. These insights are useful to system designers for initiating effective crowdsourcing in support of product design and development.

Abstract:
Abstract Online user collaborative innovation (co-innovation) community is increasingly used to involve customers in product and service innovation. Why users participate in the innovation is a critical problem for firms managing the community. However, little is known about user motivations. The purpose of this paper is to identify the motivations for users participating in online co-innovation communities. Based on the expectancy theory, this study employs netnography to investigate user motivations with user actual participation behaviors. In accordance with the procedures of netnography, user participation data is collected though web mining. Then, four behavior properties are defined according to behavior characteristics. Finally, six different motivations are identified. The results show that a small number of users are inspired by status and reputation and individuality demands. Monetary rewards is one of the main motivations that make users contributing to the complex technical product process. Social relations and interest and curiosity are also important factors that drive users participating. The most of users partake for interest and curiosity. According to the different motivations, this study provides several managerial insights on how to successfully attract and motivate more users to contribute to product development in co-innovation communities. This paper contributes a systematic and efficient method for identifying user motivations. In addition, the study provides a better theoretical understanding of user motivations and offers practice guidance on inspiring and managing users for co-innovation community practitioners.
