Abstract:
Chapter 1 explores Woolf’s writings up to the end of 1925 in relation to scientific ideas on wave-particle duality, providing the ‘retrospect of Woolf’s earlier novels’ which Michael Whitworth has suggested shows that she was working ‘in anticipation of the physicists’. The chapter as a whole challenges this idea of anticipation, showing that Woolf was actually working in parallel with physicists, philosophers, and artists in the early twentieth century, all of whom were starting to question dualistic models and instead beginning to develop complementary ones. A retrospect on wave-particle dua

Abstract:
This chapter shows how the concept of the trajectory of a quantum particle almost vanished in the battle between Werner Heisenberg’s matrix mechanics and Erwin Schrödinger’s wave mechanics. It took Niels Bohr and his complementarity principle of wave-particle duality to cede back some reality to quantum trajectories. However, Schrödinger and Einstein were not convinced and conceived of quantum entanglement to refute the growing acceptance of the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum physics. Schrödinger’s cat was meant to be an absurdity, but ironically it has become a central paradigm of pract

Abstract:
Chapter 2 looks at Woolf’s writings from 1926 onwards in relation to both Louis de Broglie’s work on the wave-particle duality of radiation and matter and, more significantly, Niels Bohr’s development of the principle of complementarity in 1927. The chapter argues for Woolf’s increasing interest in, attempts at, and ease in writing complementary models, linking this to contemporary scientific developments, but also exploring a broader early twentieth-century interest in complementary approaches, including in psychology. It distinguishes between duality and complementarity, arguing that Woolf c
