Full textBecause of their great potential in mechanical design, magnetorheological fluids have been the subject of a lot of research during the last decade. Although they are already used in some semi-active dampers, their use in other promising technologies such as magnetorheological clutches remains not usual. The main reason for this lack of representation in clutch technologies is the relatively low shear stress transmission capability of these fluids. As a solution, some researchers proposed the application of a compressive stress on the fluid layer while maintaining a magnetic field. As a result, the shear stress transmission capability increases significantly. This effect has been called the Squeeze-Strengthen effect. This effect focuses on the significant interactions between the ferromagnetic particles present in the fluid. This master thesis proposes a global approach to study and model the interactions between particles in magnetorheological fluids. First, experiments are performed to study the Squeeze-Strengthen effect in the context of clutch technologies. The tests have shown that shear stress transmission capacity can be easily increased more than ten times the initial capacity without compression. Then, a numerical model based on the discrete elements method applied to the magnetorheological fluids is proposed. This simulation allows the determination of the state of forces on each particle considered in the model. Some qualitative observations of the particle structure can be made from this simulation. Finally, the bases of a mathematical model of continuum mechanics applied to the magnetorheological fluids are posed. In order to take the particle interactions into account, the assumption of a micro polar medium is made. An homogenization technique is proposed as a way to use the information obtained from the numerical simulations and the experimental investigations in order to obtain the rheologic behaviour laws.

Full textThe aim of this work is to characterize the interfacial properties of phages using the soft multilayer particles concept in order to interrelate appropriately their reactivity and their physico-chemical features. It was demonstrated that the RNA inside the capsid do have a major impact on the physico-chemical properties of the virus, in particular its electrophoretic mobility. We further compared electrohydrodynamic features of MS2 phage with those of the corresponding VLPs (virus particles without RNA). In line with theoretical predictions based on the soft particles concept, it is shown that MS2 are more negative than VLPs. The aggregation profiles of both particles significantly differ demonstrating the major influence of the genome on stability of viral suspensions. We then analyzed the influence of the virus purification method on the observed differences in terms of stability and electrohydrodynamics. We also studied the interfacial properties of phages exhibiting similar structures. It appeared that the phages display similar electrostatic charge while their hydrophobicity degree follows the sequence MS2

Full textThis thesis focuses on a droplet-based microfluidic method without the addition of surfactants to prepare RBC-like microparticles. The microparticles are obtained by ionic gelation of a natural polymer, sodium alginate (Na-alginate), with calcium chloride to form a gel of calcium alginate (Ca-alginate). Gelation is studied in situ in the microfluidic system or ex situ after the collection of Na-alginate microparticles. The size, the structure and the alginate concentration of the final microparticles are studied according to the operating parameters of the microfluidic system. The microfluidic method developed throughout this thesis allows to control the size and mechanical properties of Ca-alginate microparticles while avoiding their coalescence, despite the absence of surfactants. Thus, monodispersed Ca-alginate microparticles with a Young’s modulus close to that of RBCs are obtained and the feasibility of their use for ultrasonic measurements is also shown. In addition, alternative methods explored in parallel are presented at the end of the thesis

Full textThe study of the dusty plasma is now a developing scientific field, attracting the attention of scientists. Recall that the dusty plasma is conventional plasma with inserted or formed therein particles of condensed matter of microns sizes, the size of these particulates (dusts) can acquire very large charges up to 3 5 10 ¸10 of the elementary charges. In the literature, it is also named as plasma with a condensed dispersed phase, aerosol plasma. Dusty plasma is of interest both for the solution of the applied problems, and to expand our knowledge of the fundamental phenomena in nature, properties and structure of matter. Due to the fact that the macroscopic dust are visually distinguishable the dispersed plasma is unique comfort object for the study of some physical properties of condensed matter, such as phase transitions, transport processes, etc.It was found that in many modern plasma technologies, due to the interaction of the plasma with the material surfaces macroscopic particles from the material fall into the plasma (sizes are from micron fractions up to a few hundred microns). As result complex plasma is formed. The most common name of this plasma is dusty plasma. An interesting fact is that the dusty plasma forms under certain conditions the ordered structures ("plasma crystal", clouds, droplets). All of these plasma- dust structures are naturally occurring undesirable contamination and negatively affect on the physical and mechanical properties (microhardness, corrosion resistance, etc.) of the constructional materials. One of the most important scientific and technological problems is the realization of the controlled thermonuclear fusion. Formed in the wall region of the Tokamak dusty plasma can play a big role: recent experimental data show that the presence of dust in the plasma can affect the global energy confinement time. The use of the dusty plasma in the production of high composite materials is new field of application, for example, small spherical particles with nanocoating deposited in the plasma. In order to study formation of a homogeneous powder of the dust particles with desired properties and stability of its production, it is necessary to find the optimal conditions and time of production. Thus, the study of dusty plasma properties, their diagnostics are very important tasks, both from the scientific and applied aspects

Full textThe aim of this thesis consists in studying the chemical nature, the origins as well as the optical properties of aerosols in West Africa. We focused on establishing the links between the chemical composition of fine particles at surface and aerosols optical properties. Our study is based on measurements acquired during the SHADOW field campaign, implemented on the M’Bour (Senegal) site during two intensive observation periods: March to June 2015 (IOP-1) and November 2015 to January 2016 (IOP-2). For this purpose, an instrumentation allowing online chemical characterization of surface PM1 (ACSM, TEOM-FDMS, aethalometer), at high time resolution, was implemented in parallel with instruments measuring aerosols optical properties at surface (aethalometer, nephelometer) and along the atmospheric column by remote sensing (Lidar, photometer). The coupling of meteorological data with statistical tools allowed determining the local and/or regional contribution of the different species, and identifying the source areas responsible for the high concentrations observed on site. The source receptor model (PM) allowed to further investigate the submicronic organic fraction, highlighting a fast photochemistry and the influence of specific anthropogenic activities (waste burning, fish smoking). We were also able to characterize, per season, the type of aerosols contributing to the fine particle extinction measured at surface, as well as to show links/differences between remote sensing and surface chemical/optical properties of fines particles during the two IOP
