Abstract:
The paper re-appraises accepted classifications of linguistic elements into word-level constructions on the one hand and in terms of Parts-of-Speech systems on the other from the point of view of Construction Grammar (CxG). We focus on a particular adverbial construction in Hebrew, with the surface form PrepOC, where “Prep” is one of the four basic prepositions in the language and OC stands for fixed forms of a lexically restricted group of Nouns, Verbs, or Adjectives. We analyze these constructions as having an “intermediate” status, in terms of elements lying between those that express concrete conceptual content and those that activate an abstract grammatical schema. The special nature of these and other intermediate word-level constructions in Hebrew is demonstrated experimentally in sentential contexts, and their functional, structural, and distributional properties are analyzed in the discursive context of a large corpus of authentic texts, both oral and written. Evidence from on-line processing strategies and speaker judgments combines with discourse based usage to confirm the special status of Hebrew PrepOC expressions as word-level constructions occupying neither the atomic-substantive nor the complex-schematic end of the syntax-lexicon continuum. Furthermore, we propose that these constructions analyzed here as “pragmatically/discoursally motivated”, along with other “intermediate” constructions, function as textually motivated Parts-of-Discourse rather than as semantically autonomous or structurally dependent Parts-of-Speech.

Abstract:
The article has provided an analysis of the problem of parts of speech in modern linguistics, addressing the linguistic criteria for identifying parts of speech, the composition of parts of speech in specific linguistic types, and the grammatical categories inherent to particular parts of speech within specific linguistic types, and emphasizes the relevance and importance of their issues in the current field of linguistic research. The mention of prominent scientists and their contributions to the field adds historical context and demonstrates the development of the study of parts of speech over time. Recognizing the methodological challenge with describing faced in studying parts of speech, noting the three main principles used in linguistics: semantic, morphological, and syntactic. It is concluded that it is impossible to apply all these principles simultaneously and sets the stage for further exploring the intricacies of parts of speech in linguistic research.

Abstract:
Abstract Setswana qualificatives consists of multiple words. This makes part of speech tagging a challenging task especially for the relative part of speech. The Setswana relative has a wide variety of structure in terms of number of words, form, tense, and negation. A few studies have looked at part of speech tagging for Setswana complex parts of speech including the relative. However, these studies did not explore in detail all the different forms of a relative. In this study, we investigate the different forms of a Setswana relative and convert them into a general pattern. The relative patterns are stored in a trie data structure which is used to detect relative’s parts of speech in a given Setswana sentence. Tests show that most of the relative forms are consistent giving a performance rate of 78% for the test data. The direct relative structure gives a higher performance rate as its structure is simpler and less ambiguous compared to the indirect relative structure.

Abstract:
Making dictionaries is a vital aid to completing a full grammatical analysis of a language, particularly if the dictionary requires the specification of the part of speech for each entry. English (or “universal”) parts of speech may not be relevant in all languages, as can be shown by structural comparisons of “adjectives” in San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec vs. Chickasaw and of “adpositions” in San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec (and Mixtec) vs. Chickasaw. Each language will present its own structurally determined inventory of parts of speech, relevant for its own grammatical facts. Thus, discovering the actual parts of speech of a language is a critical part both of dictionary making and of grammar writing. These aspects of linguistic analysis are crucially interconnected.

Abstract:
In this study, we will highlight the contrastive aspect of defining the parts of speech between Albanian and English. In this contrastive analysis of the definition of parts of speech between Albanian and English, differences in grammatical terms have been noted, such as the division of parts of speech in Albanian language into variable and invariable parts of speech, in contrast to English, which divides them into closed and open classes. Moreover, throughout this grammatical and semantic research of defining the parts of speech, it is noted that the English language distinguishes eight parts of speech but does not include the numerals and particles, whereas the Albanian language includes them. It is interesting that in the English language, the definitions of the parts of speech, besides the part that are more comprehensive, they also have a more meaningful and logical use of terminology, compared to terminology used to define parts of speech in the Albanian language, which is much more traditional and has some shortcomings, which will be emphasized throughout this study. A concrete example of verb definition in English: Verbs are words that describe specific actions. Whereas, the definition of the verb in Albanian: The verb names an action. It has the category of mood, tense, voice and person. As it is seen, with a comparison of the verb definition between English and Albanian, we can discern that there is space to find shortcomings in terms of adequate grammatical and semantic terminology, in order for the definitions of parts of speech to be more comprehensive and logical in the future. Developing an automatic parts-of-speech (POS) tagging for any new language is considered a necessary step for further computational linguistics methodology beyond tagging, like chunking and parsing, to be fully applied to the language. Many POS disambiguation technologies have been developed for this type of research and there are factors that influence the choice of choosing one. This could be either corpus-based or non-corpus-based. In this paper, we present a review of POS tagging technologies.

Abstract:
Late Archaic Chinese is a precategorial language, i.e., a language whose lexical items are not preclassified in the lexicon for the syntactic functions of N and V. This will be shown on the basis of structural-conceptual criteria as those developed by Croft (2000) and Sasse (1993b) as well as on the basis of methodological criteria as those suggested by Evans & Osada (2005). As is claimed in Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1995, 2005), the meaning of lexical items is derived by integrating their own lexical meaning with the meaning contributed by the construction. The construction analysed in this paper is the argument structure construction. Linking between lexicon and syntax is subject to stereotypical pragmatic implicatures (Levinson 2000) that follow a version of the animacy hierarchy. As it will turn out, Late Archaic Chinese does not strictly lack parts of speech. In fact, without the distinction of nouns and verbs at the level of syntax it would not be possible to analyse utterances in Late Archaic Chinese. The only thing that Late Archaic Chinese can do without is noun/verb distinction in the lexicon. This typologically remarkable property is due to a process of morphological change. If such a historical process can take place irrespective of parts-of-speech distinctions, precategoriality in the lexicon cannot be a robust universal feature even if most theoretical approaches take it for granted.

Abstract:
This paper argues that the word order possibilities of a language are partly determined by the parts-of-speech system of that language. In languages in which lexical items are specialized for certain functionally defined syntactic slots (e.g. the modifier slot within a noun phrase), the identifiability of these slots is ensured by the nature of the lexical items (e.g. adjectives) themselves. As a result, word order possibilities are relatively unrestricted in these languages. In languages in which lexical items are not specialized for certain syntactic slots, in that these items combine the functions of two or more of the traditional word classes, other strategies have to be invoked to enhance identifiability. In these languages word order constraints are used to make syntactic slots identifiable on the basis of their position within the clause or phrase. Hence the word order possibilities are rather restricted in these languages. Counterexamples to the latter claim all involve cases in which identifiability is ensured by morphological rather than syntactic means. This shows that there is a balanced trade-off between the syntactic, morphological, and lexical structure of a language.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present data that shed light on the parts of speech system of Russian Sign Language (RSL), in particular, the noun-verb distinction. An experimental study revealed that in RSL, specific phonological differences distinguish between nouns and verbs; these include differences in movement, handshape, orientation, location, and mouthing. The attested differences, which are subject to variation among the signers, can co-occur with each other. The patterns we found cannot be accounted for by models that have previously been proposed for other sign languages (e.g. American Sign Language and Australian Sign Language). We argue that these differences may result from the higher iconicity of verbs and the higher economy of nouns.

Parts of speech – each one and all of them together – do not constitute closed systems. Core and periphery can be distinguished within each word class. The core is defined with reference to both the prototypical semantics and function and the prototypical grammatical category characteristic of the relevant part of speech. The periphery includes borderline words, which due to their non-core semantics exhibit grammatical properties typical both for the word class they belong to and for other classes. Different degrees of remoteness between the core and the periphery can also be observed.

Abstract:
The issues of review-theoretical research of parts of speech in linguistics are considered. The paper discusses the principles of classifying language units based on the subject-substantial, process-significant nature of describing the extra-linguistic human environment, including the grammatical structure of words and their syntactic interaction. It is pointed out that in applying the semantic criterion of classifying parts of speech it is necessary to take into account the nominative function of language and is shown its dual nature, which complicates the identification of words and parts of speech in ways to describe objects, processes and their characteristics. It is noted that the basic parts of speech of the French language have meanings reflecting reality fully, while with additional parts of speech some difficulties arise due to the complex nature of the French word, manifested in a complex of phonemic and lexical-semantic units.

Abstract:
The issue of parts of speech in different languages remained contentious through many centuries. And it is still an unsolved problem in modern linguistics because of the weak theoretical framework which has to do with the very nature of parts of speech and lexicographical factor (for example, the choice of the dictionaries which were the basis for words selection). This factor influences parts of speech categorization, its composition and its volume. Distinguishing different parts of speech principles, their nomenclature, hierarchy is a very important question of any language’s grammar, which forms the basis of the language’s grammatical structure and it is still not resolved in modern hungarology. The present article shows the results of comparative studies of parts of speech in Hungarian and Russian. This approach reveals not only specific features of grammatical structures of these languages to show morphological distinctions of two languages of different structure but also to discover the common features, criteria and unified approach to clustering parts of speech and to grammatical categories’ description. The author’s goal was to trace the development of the linguists’ view on the part of speech, to distinguish different approaches to study them, to describe and interpret word classes in both languages by consistent comparison of linguistic facts. Meanwhile, the emphasis was on identifying inconsistencies, contrasting features and grammatical discrepancy. Special attention was paid to the review of parts of speech theory and their classification in Hungarian linguistics. The results of comparative analysis of parts of speech in Hungarian and Russian are presented in the article. Through the contentious comparing of grammatical facts of Hungarian and Russian the author established how systems of parts of speech in Russian and Hungarian can be related, what common features and differences they have. The joint use of methods of comparative linguistics is demonstrated in the article. Data of the modern explanatory dictionaries of the Hungarian language was used for analysis of the chosen lexicon. The analysis of the language facts made by tools of contrastive linguistics along with the results of comparing data of these languages let one learn Hungarian grammar easier and deeper and also let one develop the theory and practice of translation, lexicography and interculturalism.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the problem of identifying parts of speech in the historical perspective covering the period of 1700–2019. It provides an insight into classical Greek and Latin approaches to exploring parts of speech, which lay foundation for further formation of the English tradition of parts of speech identification. More than 400 genuine grammar books, comprising variegated approaches towards parts of speech classifications that were used to functioning and are currently adopted in the English language, were analysed. The research suggests that classical approaches, Greek and Latin, in particular, had a profound impact on establishing the original English tradition in parts of speech identification. Since the period of standardisation (the 18th century) in the English grammar tradition, over 30 different classifications have been in use, either becoming popular and applicable in the English language or going into disuse. In the present paper, all classifications are analysed in detail and arranged into 5 groups and 13 subgroups, respectively.

Abstract Voicing is an important phonetic characteristic of speech. Each phoneme belongs to a group of either voiced or unvoiced sounds. We investigated and compared the performance of five algorithms widely used to estimate speech voicing. All algorithms were implemented in Matlab and tested on both short consonants and continuous speech. Phonetically paired consonants (voiced vs unvoiced) and parts of read speech from audio books were used in the experiments. The tuned harmonics-to-noise ratio method gave the best results in both situations, ie for consonants and continuous speech. Using this method, the overall voicing of Czech, Polish, Hungarian and English was investigated. Hungarian speech showed the highest proportion of voiced parts, approx. 75 %. In other languages, the proportion of voiced parts was around 70 %.

The analysis allows us to consider the approaches towards the classifications based on various principles (logic, psychological, positivistic, functional, cognitive) and come up with the characteristics enabling the scholars to give non-contradictory linguistic definitions to the parts of speech, state their exact number, identify the boundaries between them and develop a system of parts of speech.

Abstract:
From the historical perspective the issues of overview-theoretical research of parts of speech in the interval from the III century BC to the XX century, starting with the Alexandrian school of grammar, are considered. The members of this school substantiated the notion of parts of speech as an association of words with common and analogous meanings, with similar grammatical features. We briefly analyze the views of the German scientists H. Paul and H. Schuchardt, who introduced into linguistics the doctrine of relevant grammatical forms, inherent in the main and auxiliary parts of speech in their realization in the sentence, and interacting in a certain way in such realization.

Abstract:
The article features the phases of the development of ideas about parts of speech in the Russian linguistics. The aim of this research is to analyze and compare approaches to parts of speech made by various Russian linguists. In spite of the fact that the classification of words into parts of speech has a very long history, going back to ancient grammars, the interest in the matter has never expired, in the Russian language at various phases of its development as well. An analytical review of fundamental studies devoted to this aspect has demonstrated that the theory of parts of speech in the linguistic science has got a distinct dialectical character. In this connection the investigation of the origin and development of Russian parts of speech is especially relevant not only for Russian linguistics, but also for the theory of language in general. As this research reveals, both the number and the status of parts of speech has changed in the process of their segmentation in the Russian language. The overview of their evolution in grammatical conceptions of Russian scientists is important as it helps to define the place of this category in the morphological system of the grammar. The theoretical significance of the article is in the revelation of study methods applied to parts of speech and their interpretation. The results of the research conducted can be used in the preparation of lectures and seminars in general linguistics, history of linguistics, history of language and theoretical grammar.

Abstract:
The type of predicate that is called ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb) in traditional grammar is relative. Because the predicate of the sentences with ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb) are not only formed with such as noun, adjective, numeral or pronoun. Those that we consider them as predicate (in the group of Name including noun, adjective, pronoun, etc.) are followed by the copulas that are -turur, -durur (in present-day Uzbek language: -dir “in English -dir is to be”) which logically refer to emphasis. In all sentences with ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb), the copula is logically required instead of a predicate, and the predicate of such as sentences with ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb) returns again to the verb. Although they are the sentences with ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb), the predicate is logically required in the structure of a sentence. The state of being a predicate of the words except for a verb can be considered the result of historical-linguistic progress that lasted for more than a hundred years. In this article the sentences with ot-kesim (predicative parts of speech except the verb), and the factors of their origin are discussed, using the example of inscriptions.

Technology advances by the day and computers can be considered as valuable to almost every learned person. One of the most uses of computers nowadays is for internet surfing and social networking. Computers in this context are not restricted to desktop or laptop computers only. Internet surfing and social networking has made interactions between people and computers very easy, where people can communicate using their languages thus making processing of these languages a useful task for the computers to interpret. The correct processing of these languages on the computer relies on the correct identification of parts of speech (POS) in sentences which has been an active area of research for a long time. This paper presents a review parts of speech tagging, comparison of different tagging techniques, their characteristics, difficulties, limitation, and Multilingual Parts of Speech (POS) tagging approaches.

Abstract:
This study examined the utilisation of parts of speech in job interviews to assess their accuracy due to a lack of English language proficiency among job applicant candidates. Data was gathered from 26 fresh graduates applying for customer service executive and officer positions across three distinct recruitment organisations. Utilizing a qualitative method, the analysis focused on identifying instances of parts of speech using Bachman and Palmer's (1996) framework, emphasizing the crucial role of grammar competence in effective communication. The findings highlighted prevalent errors, particularly in verbs and conjunctions, while adverbs and adjectives exhibited fewer mistakes. Additionally, the study revealed a lack of awareness among candidates regarding the importance of parts of speech in both spoken and written communication. These results underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts among involved parties in job interviews to enhance communication skills, specifically targeting proficiency in using parts of speech. The implications stress the vital significance of mastering parts of speech in job interviews, as adept linguistic abilities significantly influence candidates' capacity to convey qualifications and skills effectively, thus impacting their suitability for employment opportunities. Implementing measures to refine part-of-speech competence can substantially enhance candidates' abilities to articulate ideas accurately and professionally, thereby positively affecting their success in job interviews.

Abstract:
In Kyrgyz linguistics, the problem of morphological identification of certain groups of words, including imitative words, remains relevant. This article talks about some cases of the use of imitators as parts of speech. The relevance of the research topic lies in the importance of a holistic description of imitative words in the comparative grammar of the Turkic languages, in determining their general lexical and grammatical properties on the materials of the Kyrgyz language and in comparative analysis with equivalents in Russian. Linguists of various languages have devoted their works to the study of imitatives, since this, an unusual group of words is of interest to many. They do not bend or conjugate, therefore they are referred to as unchangeable words. The purpose of this work is to consider imitative words as a separate part of speech, since they have a special phonetic form and morphological structure, integral semantic meaning, are actively used in the formation of new words, and act as members of a sentence. It is customary to attribute imitative words to interjections, but the article discusses the allocation of imitative words in Russian as a separate part of speech by some linguists. In addition, in the grammars of the Turkic languages, imitative words are very numerous, and the linguists-Turkologists concluded that it is possible to single them out as a special part of speech. Also, examples of imitative words from works of Kyrgyz literature are given and described, showing their inconsistency in the composition of interjections. Imitative words act as members of a sentence, serve as a derivative basis for the formation of new words.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Arabic linguistic tradition, the classification of the parts of speech (ism ‘noun’, fiʿl ‘verb’, ḥarf ‘particle’) is first introduced by Sībawayhi, who presents the three key elements in his Kitāb (I:1). The section at issue includes the presentation of the elements but does not provide much in terms of grammatical explanation. Nouns are in fact not introduced with their grammatical characteristics, but rather with examples: fa-l-ism: raǧul, wa-faras, wa-ḥāʾiṭ (“and the noun is ‘man’, and ‘horse’, and ‘wall’”) (Kitāb I:1). In addition to nouns, verbs and particles, Arabic grammar further recognized a number of other categories that are not considered as parts of speech but rather fall into the main three. This contribution aims to present relevant classifications of the parts of speech in the Greek and Arabic traditions, with the aim to account for possible external influences on the Arabic formulations, and foster further discussion on the development of the Arabic grammatical disciplines.

Abstract:
The article studies the distribution of the main parts of speech in lyrics such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The analysis is carried out both in the poems taken separately and in whole collections. The main goal of the present research is to find out the level of stability and variability of the number relating to the parts of speech belonging to different classes in poetic texts. At the same time the article examines the questions concerning the degree of the poetic text nominality, the relationship between dynamic description of Pasternak’s poetic world, expressed by verbs, and static description made by adjectives. Six collections of Pasternak’s poems which constitute an important part of his heritage have been analyzed. Since the collections were published at different times and during different periods of the poet’s literary work, they reflect peculiar features of Pasternak’s creative manner and individual style over time. The counts have helped to make a data-base including 178 poems (5962 lines) in total that has been organized and used for the study. To achieve the goal a number of statistical methods are used, including the Busemann coefficient, chi-square, and the coefficient of variation. The results obtained demonstrated a high degree of the poet’s style stability at the level of morphological features, strong prevalence of dynamic over static description, significant downward deviation from the accepted norm of the number including adjectives and (in later poems) verbs.
