Abstract:
The discourse on racial liberalism at mid-century involved the debate over antisemitism, made more urgent by Hitler’s rise in Germany. Born Jewish but largely assimilated, Hobson protested the complicity of liberals with antisemitism in her post–WW II best seller, which featured a gentile journalist passing for Jewish to write his expose. This novel’s reliance on a discourse of empathy ties it closely back to Stowe’s and looks forward to the philosophy at the heart of Lee’s Mockingbird. Here the protagonist, Philip Greene, passes as a Jew to learn how antisemitism feels. Meanwhile his liberal

In the years following her arrival in New York, Beyer earned two degrees from the Mannes School of Music, and she took additional classes at Mannes through 1929. In this, his first collection of short stories, Hardy sought to record the legends, superstitions, local customs, and lore of a Wessex that was rapidly passing out of memory. But these tales also portray the social and economic stresses of 1880s Dorset, and reveal Hardy's growing scepticism about the possibility of achieving personal and sexual satisfaction in the modern world. By turns humorous, ironic, macabre, and elegiac, these seven stories show the range of Hardy's story-telling genius. This comprehensive volume tells the rarely recounted stories of the numerous foreign air forces that supported the German Luftwaffe as part of the Axis’ quest to dominate the European and Pacific theaters–a highly compelling and often overlooked chapter of World War II history. The Axis Air Forces: Flying in Support of the German Luftwaffe presents an untold history of that global conflict’s little-known combatants, who nonetheless contributed significantly to the war’s outcome. This chapter undertakes a comparison of John Henry Newman’s reflections on faith and reason with those of his French contemporary, Louis Bautain, and the German writer, Georg Hermes. Both writers faced scrutiny from ecclesiastical authorities on the issue of faith and reason in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. The analysis shows that Newman shared affinities with both thinkers on the level of technical language and teachings regarding faith and reason. Newman’s view of implicit reason was at times strikingly similar to Bautain’s notion of raison, and Newman’s passing statements on

How does Spinoza’s passing statement in a letter that “determination is negation” become central to Hegel’s Spinoza interpretation? The background is a tradition that negotiates Spinoza’s Jewishness by means of another epistolary statement: that “nothing comes from nothing.” More made this Kabbalah’s first principle, while Bayle associated it with Spinoza and the Orient. Wachter and Basnage then interpreted Spinoza as philosophical Kabbalah’s main exponent. Jacobi construed the principle as a version of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, identifying Spinozistic rationalism with philosophical

When did the notion of a “meaning of life” arise in English and other languages? How does the English word meaning, which is a verbal noun, d

Abstract This book explores how different forms of narrative maintain and extend our knowledge of the Holocaust at this critical moment in history, when the last survivors are passing away. It develops and uses an original approach that combines key aspects of narrative studies, memory studies, narrative ethics, narrative hermeneutics, and narrative psychology. The book shows that testimony, narrative fiction, and film play a key role in forming our individual and collective memory of Nazi Germany’s mass murder of six million Jews. Inspired by narrative hermeneutics, these narrative analyses a
